I would like to the thank staffs in Safeway at 850 N Lake Blvd, Tahoe City, for keeping the store open on Thanksgiving Day. There was a long list of stores and restaurants closed on that day, including Subway. Besides, it's very nice to have a panic area behind the store. Safeway - Grocery Near Me - Tahoe City, California

This Safeway is unfortunately very disorganized. Many shelves were empty, prices were noticeably higher than average, and several items were mismarked--but employees wouldn't override the incorrect pricing. If you're headed to Tahoe, I strongly recommend doing your grocery shopping before you arrive. This location is convenient, but not reliable if you're looking for a fully stocked store or fair pricing. read more

Safeway sold out the community by forcing. Out save mart, now we are stuck with one ezpensive option. read more

Horrible grocery store. Produce department is way too small, and crowded out by unhealthy bakery junk food. Better to shop in Truckee for groceries. read more

It's not horrible, but grocery outlet is usually my first choice. But if I want something specific like puff pastry or something along those lines I will come here for frozen, dry, or pre-packaged goods. I have yet to come when I see something other than bananas that look decent in the produce section- I also come sporadically so I am zero for nine over the last few seasons. read more

For being in such an uppity area you'd expect quality food and superior customer service but that is not what you get. For the most part the produce was decent but the pack of sliced pepper Jack we bought was wet, soggy and smelled so bad we had to toss it. The salads in the deli counter were all discolored and looked dried out. They were out of fresh chicken breasts so we couldn't get their 2 person hot meal deal and this was at 2pm, so not like we came last minute. All of the fresh bread felt hard as a rock. Lots of the meats looks off in color and we're marked down. Just overall pretty bad. And because of the location, prices here are high so definitely not the quality you'd expect. Customer service was also lacking. The lady in front of us forgot something so she told the cashier to void her transaction and ring us up while she went back for what she needed. The cashier rang up all our items (27 items) and then realized she didn't void the previous transaction so we were about to pay for our groceries and the lady that was in front of us. Instead of voiding out the 5 items that belonged to the other lady, she took her sweet time and voided out all 27 of our items, then let the lady come all the way back up to the front of the line and pay for her stuff. At this point there was a huge line of pissed off people. Not to mention I had bagged my own groceries because no one came to help and now we had to unbag everything to be rang up again. A 30 minute grocery trip turned into an hour plus headache. Thankfully I'm not from this area and I never have to set foot in here again. If I was a local tho, I'd probably make the drive to Truckee to avoid this place since the SaveMart down the street closed. read more

Small crowded and unkept. No associate seemed friendly. Made eye contact and looked away. Not being regular myself and looking like I am looking for something,no associate seemed interested in help me at 930 on a Tuesday. Found everything on my own by the way. read more

Customer service is always poor in this store. Overcrowded with the savemart now gone (which was a waaay more pleasant shopping experience. Now Safeway is opening up in the old savemart space, but no telling when? It's been years in the making. Unfortunately will be left with one larger crappy Safeway vs the smaller one. Hopefully another grocery store will open up - like a t joes or whole foods. Everyone hates this Safeway read more

Definitely Not like my hometown Safeway. expired stuff on the shelf including steaks that looked like they've been left in the refrigerator shelf for too long. Still managed to find some cut up meat for dinner and made something quick and easy. read more

Safeway - a plate of mexican food with rice and beans - Grocery Near Me - Tahoe City, California

I had exceptional customer service at our Safeway in Tahoe City yesterday. Candy, my cashier, was happy to help correct a pricing error on one of the items I purchased, which had been rung up without the current price discount. She went above and beyond to correct it! She is a great asset to your store! read more

I have been coming here for years and in fairness I am assuming Safeway couldn't have seen the last 5-6 months in their advanced planning. What I do know is I have shopped here for 25 years and today I waited 40 minutes in the checkout line. The store hasn't kept up with the demand and the Bay Area folks hiding out during COVID-19 and added social distancing and masks made today terrible. I forgot an item and don't want to go back! I don't blame Safeway fully as half the customers we bumped into were miserable as well. I sure hope we get a vaccine soon and can get life back to normal! Our cashier was amazing and I could tell the staff are weary! read more

Safeway - people shopping in a grocery store - Grocery Near Me - Tahoe City, California

my review is a reflection of the lack of customer service. The store provides. I was in there yesterday and I asked the checker if she could call over the loudspeaker for the meat department because there was nobody to be found but that's not unusual. She told me she could not do that, I explained to her I was looking for a specific item, and I did not understand why she could not phone over the loudspeaker for the meat department and ask if they had this item in stock she refused! this is why I have always shopped at Savemart because the people that work there for the decades that I've lived in this town have always been helpful, courteous friendly, and Safeway just sucks a few of the people that used to work at Savemart are now working at Safeway so that's good but they're treated like crap and I've witnessed that myself the reason they went to Safeway is because Savemart got kicked out of Tahoe city and apparently Safeway is going to take over their location because Safeway lost their lease where they located now. I refuse to shop at Safeway. The only reason I went there is to get chicken for my dogs, but I won't go there and shop. I'll go to Truckee to Savemart or to the health food store or any place else other than Safeway in Tahoe city! read more

ALWAYS always watch the register price as your items are scanned and ALWAYS recheck your receipt in the parking lot. Example garlic 59 cents, next basket over garlic 79 cents SAME PLU #. This happens on a regular basis. Safeway is very well known for price discrepancies. Be a discerning and shrewd shopper when shopping at any and all Safeways. It's not just this local one. read more

Produce is pretty good except for very old broccoli in both organic and regular sections. My poor review is about checking out. There's only one lane open whenever I go and the checker is the unfriendliest person in the store. She will not bag the groceries but either waits for another employee to do it or the customers themselves. When I was just there was a very old man waited for some help and she ignored him. She's incapable for smiling. read more

Well stocked store with friendly employees. Could use a new tile floor, but it was clean. Plenty of parking.

Every time we come here, there are only two check outs open and it takes about 20 minutes just to get through the check out line. This is so ridiculous!!! I thought it was a fluke the first time, but after trip #3, it's the same thing! Also, the manager just stands there watching everyone, open another check out!!! I'd rather drive further to another grocery store, this is nuts. So this Safeway officially lost my business. I'd recommend driving a little further to a different place. read more

Safeway - a man pushing a shopping cart in a grocery store - Grocery Near Me - Tahoe City, California

I was a little bit surprised by the low rating. I shopped at this location for breakfast ideas for a morning and there was not much to complain. The store was small, considering it is in Tahoe area it is very understandable. The breakfast section has a lot of choices, ranging from hot food to cold deli. The quality of course can't compete with actual restaurant, but decent for a grocery store. The customer service are mostly very nice, I was completely new here and talked with 4 associates and all of them were very helpful. One of them helped me to figure out when the donut would arrive (it was from a bigger Safeway through trucks) and the ETA was right on. Another helped me found out the price of donut in bundles and helped me load the assorted donuts, and the third one gave me great recommendations for cold sandwich. The only one that let me down is the one at the check out, despite I told her that half dozen donut has a bundle price as told by the store manager, she just didn't do any checking but simply said that she never heard of it. I was in a hurry and the difference was small so it was not worth dragging store manager into the conversation. I think people should get their expectation right when giving ratings, it does not make sense to compare the food quality and customer service of a grocery store to a fancy fine dining restaurant. read more

I was glad to find a Safeway in Tahoe City - I looked for a few products at the little mart I had been to the night before and they did not carry a few things. Bingo! Found most of everything that I wanted! I liked the fact that the outside of the Safeway was designed in such a way that it felt like it was part of the local mountain community (see the picture). read more

Place blows! Some bullshit manager took over my breakfast burrito order and decided to make my order with her breakfast/lunch, which consisted of putting her gloved hand in the guacamole and after using her guacamole hand she made our burritos, adding unwanted guacamole from her unchanged glove. So close to telling her fo stop! And after she gave me the burritos I could hear her yelling to the cashier: "did he pay for 2?, did he pay for 2??" Talk about slime bags!! She obviously has to get a new job because she sucks at the easiest job ever. Im surprised she didn't look me in the face and spit in my food. She pretty much did. Never going back!! Guacamole hands! I was in Tahoe. No, not to ski. No, not to stay inside and read. I came to Tahoe to sit in a hot tub, wear a furry hat and drink myself awesome. And Safeway helped me and my crew do this. They supplied us our basic necessities... like alcohol, chocolate and blueberries (FTWPancakes). The service was quick, fast, personable and the selection of fruits/veggies, while smaller than any Safeway I've ever seen, good for the fact that it had just snowed and we'd driven up three plus hours with nothing in the car but soy sauce and chocolate covered biscotti. Yep, we're planners. read more

I have never reviewed a grocery store before...this feels odd. I'm going for it!!! I need to commend the cashier Aubrey for her outstanding customer service. I visit this store approximately five days a week and she's usually there and always helpful and nice to me. I've even seen her go above and beyond for other customers and she's always friendly with a smile. I've never had that great of service at a grocery. Ever. I would hire the biz out of her!! Never going to another grocery store in this area! I just wish they had more fresh produce. But this is Tahoe and they did truck that stuff up a mountain so I can't really complain. And it's the same story at all the other places anyway. read more

We got there a little after 6 pm on Sunday evening, and it was crazy and claustrophobic with people. It was anxiety inducing for our first night in Tahoe when we were trying to keep to ourselves in the midst of Covid-19. People were wearing mask but there was no way to keep distance. At one point there were only 2 checkers with both lines snaking through the isles back to the meat counter in the back. Stood in line for 20 minutes. Clearly they were overrun and they were not limiting how many people were in the store and they did not have adequate staff. The clerk at meat counter was trying to service multiple people and didn't have time to cut meat. When we finally got up to the checkout lane the lady in front wanted cigarettes and it took our checker and another person to go to the service counter to get them causing a 2-3 minute delay after already being in line forever. The customer should have been sent to service counter. We also bagged our own groceries which I did not mind because I felt terrible for the 2 checkers going non-stop. We did go back 3 days later and did not go in because it was busy again but we noticed they were limiting the numbers into the store. read more

Terrible service, poor management at this location. Better off going to Savemart or Kingsbeach

The staff at Safeway is always friendly and helpful. They work extremely hard to to provide services and always smile. Sadly, we do have some people who visit and are........you can fill in what you want. The last year and a half has brought on many new challenges in every aspect of life. Unfortunately, some people have not been paying attention the news. I say this as a full time professional, who commutes regularly, has a staff, education and small children. I thoroughly respect every individual who is going to work in the public sector. In my book you are all saints and I can not thank you enough!!!! read more

This place needs a new manager!!!! FILTHY dirty, which is totally unacceptable during a pandemic. They really need to get their act together! The self checkout area was so dirty I couldn't even put my food down. Carts were all over the place outside and clearly hadn't been wiped down in quite some time. Really gross!!!!!! read more

This is a very small Safeway compared to others I've been too. It doesn't mean though that I wasn't able to buy everything I needed. My friends and I stocked up in groceries here since it is one of very few grocery stores in the area. I like Safeway because their products are consistent. I can always find good, cheap produce (well compared to hawaii supermarkets, everything here was cheap... Except rice. Rice was more expensive. Spam too). Several workers asked if we needed help, even though we didn't, it was a nice offer. I like feeling like I'm buying things on sale here with my safeway rewards card. My only disappointment was with the deli section. It was the smallest Safeway deli I'd ever seen and although we went between 11-12, most of their lunch items weren't out yet. Maybe only in hawaii are he supermarket delis open and ready for business before 8am? Idk. But I was really looking forward to some Safeway deli food for lunch, but ended up going to subway instead :/ read more

Make sure you check dates. Horrible store! They don't care about their customers. I've been in there four times and got expired items every time. My bad for not checking. Shouldn't have to though. A lot of the staff is nice, but management don't seem to be doing their job. The last straw was,I just went to eat A Twix I just bought yesterday, and it expired four months ago. Joke!!! read more

The Safeway in the heart of Tahoe City, CA has terrible customer service. We stood in a check out line for 10-15 minutes and when we finally made it to the checker is said "I am going to shut this check out line down after this customer so you should go to self check out". We don't like using self check and told him he said that is our only option. We told him if we were going to have to go to self check why didn't he tell us that instead of having us wait in the line! read more

Deli review. Stopped in to grab sandwiches to eat by the lake. Waited 20 minutes with only 3 people ahead of me in line. 2 other deli workers just standing around doing nothing. Got to the lake and found the sandwich bread was at least a day old. Do yourself a favor and walk around the corner to Subway if you want to grab a sandwich in the area. read more

Erin, the checker, has a major attitude problem. She lacks basic customer service skills and shouldn't be anywhere near the general public. Other than that, I'm sure she's delightful. read more

Only grocery store to be found in Lake Tahoe at least in our area. I wanted something clean, without sugar, gluten and animal fat. I walked up to the deli and 4 employees were chatting. After 3 minutes I finally asked if I could order something or if they were done with their shift. No ingredients are listed on their signs. What I thought would be basic, veggies, had a long list of ingredients on the price tag. It included High Fructose corn syrup, oils etc... A bit taky and not California style.... Not to mention the place was dirty. The day before we bought spoiled food. Like I said, no other place to go besides restaurants. read more

In short: It's a small Safeway that packs a good punch in the "popular brands" department. Should you try it? Yes - if it's close! Ambience: Very small grocery store, but provides lots of great fresh items. Service: Generally what you'd expect from a grocery store. The staff at Safeway are usually very friendly and helpful when called upon. Location: This location is great for Tahoe City, Dollar Point, and all of Carnelian Bay. 3 Key Tips: 1) If it's cold, watch out for ice in the parking lot! 2) The experience will be better if it's less busy - so avoid the rush if you can :) 3) You can buy firewood here in the winter! read more

SAFEWAY, Tahoe City, is/has been a cornerstone in the community. It's (former) competition was a Lucky's supermarket at "The Y" which then was acquired by Albertons (gone) and now trades as a Save Mart: the two just don't compare - service, quality, discounts, name-brands. Most 'locals' (I have observed) shop at Safeway versus the tourist trade. You are more likely to run-into a neighbor or seasonal visitor here and, after a friendly greeting, strike up a brief conversation. Nice, compact deli; solid wine selections; reasonable produce selections; all the basics - beverages, dry goods, sundries (no pharmacy), beef and chicken staples. The staff is 'seasoned'. The store employees greet you with a smile and ALWAYS ask (a Safeway theme, perhaps) 'have you found everything you are looking for?" My family shops at Safeway for ALL of the above reasons. Furthermore, the store is convenient to the USPS, Subway and other local-faire shops; the Boatworks Mall is immediately next door. Park once and enjoy all of the above. read more
