I only went to this Safeway because all the other stores were closed. It was about 11 PM when I left, and I knew WalMart was closed, and the other Lucky's grocery store was maybe? or maybe not? closed, but too far to take the chance. Besides, I think Safeway has better food, quality, and selection than Lucky's, which is too expensive for their sub-par fare (read my review on Lucky's FMI.
I got there, and the bad thing is right away, they have NO PLACE AT ALL TO LOCK UP A BIKE. I ride my bike EVERYWHERE; I live in the SF Bay Area; I don't need a car. I can ride anywhere I want or get anywhere I want on BART and bike, in all of this entire Bay, if I wanted to. So a place to put up a bike is important. Berkeley and Oakland shopping centers and grocery stores all have them. What is up with Hayward and never having a place to lock up a bike? They think bikers can't haul groceries home? I am insulted, sir! (-\_/-)
Anyway, so right away I see buy one get one free Craisins, which are my favorite little snack, so SCORE. Of course you need a Safeway card, and everyone is all worried about them tracking you and your buying habits with that card, but I have like 10 of them, and I don't think any of them have my identity on any of them. I may have some from other States. So I look for the card price deals when I go to Safeway.
I found blueberries and blackberries, both 2/$6.00. I later found that they had ORGANIC BLUEBERRIES for the same price, so I swapped out the chemical berries for the organic ones for the same price. SCORE!
Then I wonder why I am shopping at near midnight. I check my bank balance to see my budget, thinking I have only $15, but I see my direct deposit for the 3rd has already been deposited! Right on time! SCORE!
So now I know I am going to be doing my REAL grocery shopping at Whole Foods tomorrow, so this will be just morning breakfast stuff, because I don't even have anything for breakfast at all -- except a PB&J sandwich, which I don't feel very particularly awesome in the morning. I somehow still manage to spend about $27; I am boggled. How is this? I look over my receipt and notice that I did not get my special deal on the white grapefruit juice.
I love that juice. THAT STUFF IS THE SHIZZNIT. I DRINK IT LIKE WATER!!! So I know the prices on that stuff. I know it's either $2 (WalMart) or 2/$5 (Safeway and Lucky's). So it should be $2.50, not this $4.49 stuff. So I magically get $2 in twin washingtons handed back to me and I feel like a chump to come charging back in the store for two lousy bucks. But I still think I feel ripped off.
The ice cream I got somehow rang up for free.... strange??? So then what is this? I guess it's because I needed to buy 8 AA batteries for my bike light, because mine was faded and I don't want to get pulled over by the 6-0 with my grocery bag strapped to the back at 1 AM. So I refill my 99c Store bike front white light, which barely gives a weak beam.
Anyway I am going to get the QUALITY stuff at Whole Foods tomorrow anyway. Screw spending $25 on a trip "just to get breakfast."
Oh I guess the other highlight besides being tailed by the SAFEWAY SECURITY GUARD ALL NIGHT LONG CONSPICUOUS AS ALL HELL, was the group of kids that REEKED of the Kindest stankiest purple, totally all stoned, the female trying desperately to run her food stamp card for munchies but it gets declined after 800 attempts. Her 2 male partners both got their grub on, and didn't seem to wanna share with her. They took their stank little youngster arses out the store, the security guard literally standing in the NEXT BOOTH watching us like 3 feet away shamelessly. There is only 1 checkout line. The checkout dude is so flaming and flamboyantly so, it's almost like he can't wait until 6 AM so he can get out of here to hit The Endup for some mid-week morning disco freakout.
And that was that. I strapped that Safeway bag on the back and rode my butt home. read more
