I have always shopped at this Safeway. There's plenty of parking and usually it's pretty organized. I don't get what's going on with the liquor aisle being caged in. In any event today Jan2022, their credit cards machines aren't processing Visa cards so if anyone is planing on shopping here bring cash or you'll be out of luck. FYI cashiers Told me they have been having issues with their credit cards payment machines for a couple of days so far. No news when this issue will be resolve. Plan ahead and find other locations to shop for your groceries. read more

I generally like this store-- they carry some things that others don't... but MAN was I disappointed tonight!!! As a working mom with a toddler... I was excited to see some new "quick and easy dinners" (yes--- I could make this for myself but really wanted something I could get done in 5 min) The dish is "shrimp with zucchini noodles and garlic butter sauce".... Sounds great and healthy right??? (Especially as we are trying to introduce more veggies to our daughter)!!! Imagine my surprise when there were FOUR (yes 4) teeny/tiny shrimp cocktail shrimp!!! Yes, when I bought it I could see they were smaller shrimp but I thought there were some buried underneath!!! Keep shopping at this Safeway but steer clear of their pre made meals in the deli section read more

Safeway - Grocery Near Me - Hayward, California

Sort of surprised with this location ... it looks nice and organized inside, service is decent and relatively quick ... BUT. They've got a problem with rotating stock and expiration dates, across the board. Canned goods, breads, packaged produce ... its not uncommon to find items that have passed their sell by date. Some things I've caught, others sneak by. Their packaged meat is also USUALLY okay, but there have been three instances where I opened meat from there that still hasn't reached it's sell by date, and it smells rotten. They are decent about replacing these items, but I'd rather skip the return trip each time with the smelly meat in the car. If you are new to the area and looking for a Safeway to frequent, I'd skip this one and either go to Decoto in Union City or Lewelling in San Leandro. read more

I'm surprised at the rating because this is one of the nicer Safeway's I have been to, the fruits and vegetables are always so fresh and good. It's in a plaza with most of my errand runs so it's a one stop shop for me. Bank, coffee fix and grocery shopping all in one place? Win! Win! Win! The lines can get a bit long but it's always organized and nice inside so my shopping experience is always a pleasant one. read more

Average Safeway w/ pharmacy. Starbucks inside. They blocked off one of the entrances permanently & the walk way inside the front of the store is all blocked off so to exit you have to walk through the checkout lanes even if you're not purchasing anything. My customer experience varies when I go there. But besides that, the store is usually stocked with everything I need. Fast & easy check out. read more

Today I went in at 8pm for my "dinner" really just a sandwich, a Blue Bottle coffee and for a few Clif bars for later. I like to patronize local companies like Clif and Blue Bottle when I can. My pastrami swiss was ok. Very little meat and sort of dry. It was made the day I bought it which was a big part of my purchase decision as there are lots of choices at the deli for ready to eat foods suitable for dinner. My Blue Bottle had a sell by date of 4/23 which suggests they have good turnover which I was skeptical about since hipsters probably dont frequent this neighborhood. There were long lines as i checked out but the self check out was shorter so I went there with only 3 people ahead of me. I probably waited 5 minutes while deleting e mails from my inbox. The section where one can eat was small uncomfortable looking and looked like it was constructed as an afterthought. So I took my goods back to the nearby house that Im working on and enjoyed my pastrami sandwich. Minus one star for check out wait times. read more

The place seems to be in a bad area. there are a lot of homeless people loitering in the parking lot and people trying to sell you stuff as you try to go into the market. As I walked through the store I was bombarded by foul smells in both the bakery and on the opposite end in the produce. It smelled like rotting food and farts. Definitely not the best Safeway in the area. The security guard seemed miserable and in a bad mood. read more

This Safeway has the best floral arrangements! It's always stocked with different options and there's always someone there to help or assist. read more

There's nothing particularly special about this Safeway. The deli is inconsistent but from time to time it earns an honorable mention. The meat department is understaffed so expect to wait while the butchers saunter from what appears to be one torturous activity to another. I had some bad lobster that ruined our Christmas gumbo, but at least the management fully refunded me. I'd beware of the "fresh" seafood at least. Unfortunately, this is not a neighborhood grocery store. I get happier exchanges and better deals at the big box stores. The only thing this location has going for it is that it is one star better than its sister store on Redwood Rd in Castro Valley. read more

Starbucks guy made me wait and didn't seem like he wanted to take my order so I left after 10 mins. There was no one in front of me and he looked at me funny. Avoid this store in general it's just bad privileged vibes and a lot of hints of racism from employees. Happened March 1st, 2023 10:35am read more

I was very impressed with the service at this Safeway! We came on a Monday evening, around 7:30 pm, to pick up a cake, flowers, sparkling cider, candles, and matches for a last-minute birthday celebration. The staff was very polite and friendly and went out of their way to help us, which we were grateful for. The bakery staff member was very friendly and helpful, and quickly wrote a personalized birthday inscription on the cake for us. Later, the lady at the checkout counter was very helpful, and directed us to the right places to find matches and sparkling cider, both of which we had a hard time finding on our own. She was also very patient and understanding, and didn't make us go back to the end of the line when we came back to purchase the items we couldn't find the first time around (after having already been rung up.) Also, the carrot cake we got from the bakery was quite tasty! We were quite impressed, especially given the very reasonable price point. I have been to many Safeways over the years, and must say, the service at this one truly stood out! read more

Deli: This place takes FOREVER to make sandwiches. They are either understaffed, staffed with slow workers, or rude. Please allow more competent workers work during peak hours and don't have them train while they are busy!!! Sometimes the line isn't long and it takes 25 minutes just to get to my turn. Store: There was more than one incident where I picked something up and it was expired. The managers are always just standing around talking. Now not all of the workers are incompetent and rude, most are nice but they are overworked and the departments are not staffed efficiently. read more

The pros: Easy parking, large deli, delicious bakery snacks, and most importantly, I can pretty much find everything I need, with the selection and prices you'd expect from any other Safeway. The cons: The worst one is that they get super busy around dinnertime on weeknights and most of the time on weekends, with very long lines. I've been hassled by aggressive solicitors outside their entrance. I've seen a couple incidents with a troubled person getting into rage. It doesn't seem like the nicest area to be in. read more

Totally gone down hill since Qi left. Looking for new pharmacy tonight. They claim my doctor did not call in refill. Doctor said they did it twice and will do a third time. On hold on phone more than 29 min. Hung up. To pick up meds take Ave 25min. Done done done. Update: It has improved. The turn around of employees in that pharmacy is crazy. Right now I only have to go there every 3 months. But the pharmacist that's there now seems pretty nice. One pharm tech is super nice, and another- not so much read more

Billie, the cashier in the alcohol department is extremely rude and shallow. First, I approached the Register and put my items on the counter. She was too busy to acknowledge me because she was texting, while I was doing this. Literally, seconds later, a gentleman with alcohol puts his items on the counter and she addresses him and takes him before me, after she was done texting on her personal cell. Completely ignoring that I was first in line waiting and waited quietly until she was done responding to her text messages. It is proper manners to acknowledge someone that was waiting and then asking them if they wouldn't mind if they take care of the person behind, who had with fewer items waiting behind in line. Instead she completely looked over me as if I didn't exist. She didn't say anything acknowledging my patience's for waiting. Extremely rude, this location is horrible. Reminds me that I should have gone to the Castro Valley instead, CV location is overall way better ambiance and hospitality, everyone that works there acknowledges you and makes you feel part of the community and for the most part likes there job. Please retrain Billie in customer service and not to use her phone will working. read more

I moved to the area about two months ago. And in doing so I've been shopping at this Safeway. I am a huge fan of Grocery Outlet. And it's really hard to justify the variety of items at Safeway with the problems of getting out of here. It's just too crowded 20 mins in line NEVER happens. Otherwise the place is nice. That's why I always say if they don't have it at the G and O , then I don't need it read more

Quite frankly I wish I could give this store no stars. My husband and daughter and I went into the store to get sandwiches from the deli to take to my sons water polo game and the service was horrible. Su helped us and she was so slow it took her 20 minutes to make a sandwich. We ended up leaving with only 2 sandwiches instead of 4 because it took her so long to make them that we couldn't wait and were made late to the game. My husband asked if someone else could help as well but no one ever came. I will never come back to the store because of the service we got today. I highly recommend they put workers who can be somewhat quicker in the deli. read more

I like this one.. compared to others it is pretty well updated and up kept. The store has a great kiosk for Starbucks coffee, if your too tired to walk across to the Starbucks store next door. This Safeway is very consistent in providing the worst customer service I've ever experienced. I live within walking distance of this Safeway and usually try to avoid in like the plague. However, I was short on time and just needed a balloon and thought how bad can they possibly screw that up. Well they did, bravo! I waited at least 10 min and then the grumpy lady in the floral department who blew up the below told me that she was out of quarters and to go stand in the long lines to go pay for the balloon. After I told her that I was using my debit card, she said that she still couldn't ring it up and walked away. This store is poorly managed and must go out of their way to hire rude employees who have no interest in decent customer service. I just don't get why anyone would ever want to shop here. I'm sticking with the Castro Valley Safeway. read more

3/2/08 - They have the self-check out stations now!!! Yay! And for your Starbucks addicts, the starbucks is now functional in this safeway. Two Starbucks in one small shopping center??? Addicts.. I swear. 1/25/08 - This is my Safeway. My bf prefers to go to the one in Castro Valley even though we live within walking distance of this location. He likes that spot because it's cleaner and has friendlier staff. I agreed up to my last two visits to this Safeway. It used to be really bad with workers yelling back at each other but now that they're renovating it I believe the staff had received some training. My last visit was top notch. I was greeted and asked if I needed any assistance at least three times while going up and down the aisles. I'll change my rating to 5 stars once the renovation is done and the staff is consistent. read more

Please take a look at the picture of my Tri-tip steak that I uploaded in the photos. Does this appear to be a CANCEROUS TUMOR IN MY STEAK??! I purchased this at the safeway in Hayward on foothill blvd. Safeway, I am ungodly disgusted. Please explain this to me - the Reddit community might give me a good idea of what this is. I'm taking a sample to my microbiology class tonight to get tested, then the health department and anyone else can take a look to determine exactly what this is. Does Safeway want a sample of some of this meat that I ate half of? I'm not sure if anyone can delete photos from yelp, but I know I can update my post with a link showing the photo. Yelp is for us customers to be aware of good business practices. Even before knowing what this is exactly, I can't stand to eat meat right now and I'm very disturbed by this! read more

Safeway - I purchased this Tri-Tip from Safeway... I'm a medical student. Does this appear to be a cancerous tumor? 2-10-14 - Grocery Near Me - Hayward, California

If I could choose zero stars, I would. At 9:00am I ordered a large grocery to be picked up. An hour later I got a notification that the order was ready, and I could pick up between then and 8pm. I headed over at 5pm, the lady put my groceries in my car and said that was all. I headed home knowing 2 small bags wouldn't be it. I was missing 25 of 35 items. $110.00 MISSING. I had to file a complaint online AND wait 24-48 for Safeway to review my complaint. This is fucking ridiculous to say the least. I understand Safeway hires lazy ass teens, but step the fuck up. I will never return to this wack ass store. read more

Terrible! Really, really got to watch out for glitches in their cash registers. So many times have I found mistakes. Please check your receipts. Most recent was, Royal Crown soda was, "buy 2, get 3 free." Was charged for all 5, $49.00. Then when you bring it to their attention, they take it personal as if you are attacking them. The cashier was Carlos and he was rude and seemed more concerned on how quickly he scanned instead of accuracy. My milk was leaking, 2 meat wrappings were open. He said i could just run back there and exchange them. Please, I am 75 years old, I cannot just "run back there." He didn't bather to ask for assistance. When I was finished, the customer behind me asked if I needed help to my car. Then and only then did he ask if I needed help. Packs 2-6 packs in a plastic bag. Who does that? Castro Valley Safeway is the best but unfortunately Foothill is close to my home. Please notice most of the other reviews here. So sad! As for their managers........don't get me started. Totally unprofessional. I just don't understand how in the world they keep their positions. Go figure! read more

Great service and great selection. I never have any issues finding anything here at the store. Parking is always good here too.

This review is mainly for the floral department. I always used to purchase my fresh flowers there and never had a bad experience until today. I came in around noon to get a good amount of different flowers to make an arrangement. They had no roses, other than two bouquets that were past their prime. I did see that they had a sectioned off area with a lot of fresh flowers and tons of roses. When I tried to go over there to grab just one bouquet, I was told they're not ready for sale yet, and I need to come back in 2 hours because they need to "hydrate." If they're not ready for sale, you shouldn't even have them out like that for customers to see. I was hoping to get some help regarding that but even after pleading and saying I need just one bouquet of roses which they have easily sold me I got nothing but a nasty, bitchy attitude from the employee just saying that it's their policy. If that is really the case, she could have at least helped me find an alternative that I could have bought instead of roses. I got no help or offer like that. That's not good customer service and poorly reflects on their store. read more

This Safeway looks awesome, but the service at the deli sucks! Everytime I go in there I have to wait and go un-notice until I start putting my hands across my chest. They they will tell me " I will be right with you." It's like, WTF, I thought you were all about customer service! I got so mad one day, I just left. The Safeway in Alameda rocks, I never get neglected there, but at this Safeway, no one seems to care. I wish a secret shopper goes in there and write a crappy review, because obviously the customers goes unnoticed. read more

This is my go-to Safeway because it's on the way home from work. Selection, generally, is good, but not what I'm used to in Cincinnati (at Kroger). The Pharmacy, once I got my prescriptions transferred, has my prescriptions ready when expected. The reason for only two stars is the extremely long checkout time. The express aisle is usually open along with one other... two if you're lucky. Even if you're just running in for a few things it ends up being a long visit. read more

I have lived in the bay area for ovet 30 years (hayward, oakland, berkeley, etc.)... This is a really good safeway store.... Even if someone finds a minor flaw or two on any given day, it doesn't represent the overall everday activities of the store or the years of excellent service that this safeway has provided to it's customers. The quality of the food items are normally above the average supermarket standards, and their household items are reasonably priced.
