Went to the Safeway deli this Friday 7/17 they get rather busy when they have special deals,I ordered three deli sandwiches and I overheard the new deli lady say she just moved here from Texas. I didn't catch her name, but she was very sweet and very helpful. Unfortunately, the customer behind me was rather rude to her for no reason telling her to hurry up and she's not making the sandwiches right this was completely incorrect and rude of her! I'm just shy of a month until I'm 46. I'm gonna tell you right now, that means I have encountered no fewer than 800,000 grocery and shopping bags. I'm also old enough that I can say "I remember when. . . " And not sound like I'm auditioning for a part I am too young for . . . So, here goes: I remember when I lived at 12th&Taraval in SF. Just three straight uphill blocks from a Safeway. I lived in a 3rd story walk up apartment with my boyfriend and two cats, Blitzkrieg and Zippo. I would get groceries just to get paper bags sometimes to change my catliter. So these paper bags had handles and could safely hold groceries carried home often in Carl the fog or straight up rain, and THEN hold 10-15 pounds of soiled cat litter and poop down 3 flights of stairs without so much as tearing, let alone becoming completely structurally unsound. This is my grocery bag upon being picked up once. Once. You can't tell me it's not purposeful that these bags are garbage. It's bad enough Safeway gouges us on grocery prices, but to then disrespect the groceries we do but from them by making sure they drop on the floor immediately because of this shameful excuse for a paper bag. It's unreasonable. Completely unreasonable. This bag has English muffins, a piece of salmon and ladies hygiene pads. Almost no weight, and it tore upon being touched by a human. Safeway is a huge grocery chain . . . Do better. read more

My aunt ordered me some food I was out on lunch for work and it said pick up at 6:10 which is perfect time and gave me 50 minutes until I get to go back to work so you know I get to eat enjoy my time off while I'm on lunch for some reason I get to the store the sandwich shop is already closing then the deli lady act like she ain't hearing nothing so I go get the manager and tell the manager I'm thinking you know everything will go well since I got to hire up with me then out of nowhere she tells the person and then they act like my order don't exist like they just really don't care like the body language wise so personally I was just like I would never shop at this safe way again it's ghetto you see how they dress even while they're working that it's unprofessional and I come from a background where you treat everybody with respect but from the body language I was getting it was like the person didn't want to help me but then soon as a person showed them another person showed them the order from their phone they got right to work so it was just like a slap in my face so I will never come here or shop here ever again it's pathetic read more

Quality/Quantity - Overall a well run Safeway. Sadly, it is like "fort knox" here, see pictures. But I understand, due to all the crime. Atmosphere - Again, well run. Has most if not all of the departments. Even Amazon lockers in front; and of course, a Starbucks. Also has a pharmacy. But we frequent the "real" free standing Starbucks next door. Plenty of mall parking. Open 7 days a week from 5am to midnight. Service - Good. Price - Good. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 1915 with your 904 locations in 17 states. Been shopping here for years and now they've decided to do something completely stupid, which was to switch bags with handles to paper bags WITHOUT handles. It's like they want people to have a hard time carrying their groceries. I had 2 bags worth of groceries and I had to hold both bags up without handles. If the corporate intention was to save the planet by removing the paper handles off the paper bag, it's probable the stupidest decision ever made: I'm all for saving the planet but to remove handles and make it much harder for people to carry their grocers is RIDICULOUS! The lady at self checkout doesn't know boundaries or personal space with me or my kids every time I go she always come super close and demands to see my baby even after I tell her no multiple times. This used to be my absolute favorite grocery store before they made the horrible decision of transferring the closed Jackson store staff over. Not only did they bring over their horrible staff with no customer service experience, but they also brought over the rude customers from there with foul mouths and absolutely no manners. I sometimes find meat and frozen food completely left out in unrefrigerated areas. I have never witnessed this in all my years of shopping at this store. I feel so bad for their original employees. I try to avoid this safeway at all cost, but if I'm to tired to drive to the castro valley one then I just settle with this one. They really need more registers open. You are held hostage in the store if you forgot your wallet in your vehicle and must walk to the other end of the store to walk back to the exit. While I understand that theft is a nuisance to the store, there should be an option for people to leave if they change their minds, without having to go all the way to the other end of the store. Better options a few roads down in Castro Valley. read more

I came in today to pick up some steaks for lunch and boy it was a big disappointment when I got home. As you can see in the picture the steaks does not look very fresh at all. Actually it was borderline disgusting. Nobody like steaks in rainbow colors. This is how people get food poisoning. Frankly, I don't even know how this pack got in the rotation. The meat department needs to do a better job in ensuring that the meat is fresh and remove all this rotten junk out of the counter. At the store the meat look like it was in good condition when I picked it up. But when I got home and flipped it over to season it that's when I saw the yellowish and grey colors on it. My advice for you is to double check it before you buy it. Look at it closely because you'll end up wasting money on bad quality food here. read more

All in all I like this store... but they do have an issue with stock rotation. Specifically in the deli section. Many stores are promoting Boars Head deli meats. Being from the east coast that was our go too deli meat. Bu I like some other yelpers have bought meat. 8 days prior to the sell by date, I figured I was safe! Not! Oh, before I forget beware of the trick they do in the deli, they will take 1 pound of turkey mislabel it. Let's say just for giggles, Havarti cheese! So her you come... see that there is 1 LB of turkey for $5.63 when it should be $9.95 or higher. You think you hit the jackpot right? Until you get home and open up your ill gotten gains. So, now you realize that funny smell coming from your trunk, on the way home, was the sliced Turkey imitating sliced Cheese! This used to be a great Safeway (except for the consistently terrible deli & hot food counters service, always and forever) up until a year or so ago. It's since become a regularly bait-and-switch-like store with product discount offers, not to mention often finding out that not checking the receipt before leaving the store had resulted in getting screwed-over at the register. Examples from just today: (Note: involves use of the Safeway app/membership & digital coupons, single checkout transaction) 1. Had advertised a certain Kodiak Cakes product on sale. Had in store, on shelves, other Kodiak Cakes products only, none at "sale price" AND.....no allocated/marked space(s, even,) on shelves for, one might/could/would reasonably assume, the most-regularly available KC product, the pancake & waffle mix. 2. See 1., above. Identical situation, replace "Kodiak Cakes" / "KC" with Krusteaz. 3. Had clipped digital coupon for Barilla pasta, $0.99 each, limit 4. Label on shelf: $2.79 each, Member Price 2/ $3.00. Found out after got home that the pasta had (all 4) been charged at $2.79 each. Yeah, not even the Member discount. Oh, but the digital coupon for the (single) sour cream, no problem there. I think this is the 4th time this year that i should have checked the receipt before leaving this Safeway. read more

This review is for the Bakery Department only. First off, when I got to the Bakery Department today to pick up my orders, they had only one person working there. She did not seem to know much about the whole process! My real complaint is that I placed two Easter orders on 04/13/2025 on their online catering/trays website. I went to pick them up today. The Lady told me that my orders were not there! She would call the Manager! I didn't want the Manger, I wanted my orders! He stated that the orders did not go through. That it was a system issue. WTH Easter is tomorrow! I showed them the confirmation emails that the orders were placed. Again, The Manager said that it was a system problem, and he could do nothing about it! He did offer to have me pick out some Easter cupcakes for free! I declined! My advice is, if you place an online order, call the store to verify that they received it! Better yet, place the order in person at the Castro Valley store. This Hayward store always seems to have issues. read more

I shop at this Safeway all the time since it's on my way home...usually have everything I'm looking for except when they do a free item on the weekend. Item is always out and or store don't carry which is what happen today..If corporate is going to advertise an free item, they should make sure store carries. And I notice lately, there is never any shopping carts in the corral or any close in the lot, forcing me to use hand basket and not buying everything I need since I can put everything in basket...store usually clean and crew is hit or miss.... read more

5 stars if not more for the staff here. I never have problems when this store runs out of things because the staff is always so very kind to accommodate and even go out of their way to make sure I get what I need. There was even a time when Michael in the meat department placed a special order to their shipping department to get me the item I was specifically looking for that they were out of! What other place does that these days? Other Safeway locations sometimes give me a hard time about asking for a rain check, but this location never gives me a problem and is reliable. The management here is superb, so I don't mind going out my way to come here. read more

Security at this location has gotten excessive, but it's keeping the customers safe. Today I was purchasing a sandwich for a homeless man and he was standing in line waiting patiently and quietly. An older woman of Asian decent was helped before the homeless man. When I addressed it with the staff, Rosa, she said no she was first. I noted I was standing there and saw it. She said well she's older. I said yea I understand that but you don't need to dismiss someone else because you look down on them. When I tried to tell the manager Chris, he said ok and walked away. His response was dismissive and not reassuring that the matter would be addressed with Rosa (making sandwiches). Rosa then told Chris that I was lying. I said this was not appropriate customer service. Being rude to customers is not good for business. read more

Took my plastic bottles here for recycling and got declined service because they didn't have a designated person to take the bags to outside. They have courtesy clerks around the clock everyday but only 1 person can do it. If they have a certain hours they should have posted a sign. It's a waste of time. read more

I live near four Safeway's and this one is my favorite. It's not as crowded as the others, it's one of their larger/newer stores, the shelves tend to be fully stocked, and the staff is extra friendly. For instance, on a recent visit, I was putting my groceries in my trunk, and the guy that was out collecting the carts came by and got mine (and we had a quick, friendly chat). Another example is the women who runs the sushi counter. She's super friendly plus it's my favorite sushi selection. Compared to the other three locations near me (San Leandro, Castro Valley), this one's a stand out. read more

Date: 6/30/2018 Time: 3:10 PM 86° Sunny This is a quick stop to get something from Starbucks in this Safeway before my girlfriend, her niece and I head out to Pleasanton. It is hot out here compared to Alameda. I need something cool and a caffeine fix, plus not too many grams of sugar. I did not have to wait long to get my tall iced skinny cinnamon dolce latte. There are only two people ahead of me. Jose is the lone barista and he was on the job taking care of the customers. He was very personable and friendly. I did not want the receipt for the purchase, but he still gave it to me. It is not instant service, but I don't mind waiting in an air conditioned grocery store and browse around at their deli section. It's better than standing outside in hot weather. What a way to cool off. The submarine sandwiches always look fresh and tasty. Overall customer service seems to be decent. They sure have plenty of cashiers and baggers of groceries to assist the customers in this store, compared to other Safeway Stores I have been to. read more

MY WORK VAN WAS STOLEN 10:30 am today I came to shop at Safeway I parked behind the SECURITY GUARD which I didn't notice i had done until I came out of the store and didn't find my work van and instead of making sure my truck was safe it got STOLEN and the driver wheel had one of the safety locks for the wheel and they still had the time to steel it and when I looked at the cameras to see if anything could have been recorded the cameras were looking down like if it was planned from the beginning I'm guessing the store is in on the sterling knowingly or unknowingly I also went into the store to let them know my vehicle was stolen and they told me to go make a lap around the parking lot to make sure and we wanted time by doing that so I called the police myself ‍ and THE POLICE STILL HACENT ARRIVED read more

I've been going to Safeway on foothill for almost 30 years and i no longer go shopping there. My reasons: I feel like I'm being criminalized....1. There are two doors for entry/exit. Now only one is used. 2. I'm being recorded as I enter. I'm usually purchasing wine; therefore, I am unable to self check. (Actually, If I wanted to be cashier, I would apply.) 3. There was only one cashier, and that was at their wine section, but if I use that only cashier open, I must scan my receipt upon exiting. (What good does that do? I could have placed items in my bag while walking through store and having to exit at the self checkout. 4. There's so many security personnel, they practically stumble over each other. 5. Unfortunately, unknowingly purchased outdated, molded items, (yeah i check dates now)6. I attempted to purchase corn on cobb, apparently there was an unposted limit; however the cashier gave me a hard time about the amount of ears and proceeded to pick up newspaper to inform me of limits( I didnt get coupon paper and if I did, I rarely read them)6. The location is great, very convenient near the freeway, and the produce here is fresh. The pharmacy staff are friendly, which is one of the only reasons I still go here. The Safeway on Jackson and the Lucky's on mission don't feel clean, and the Safeway in Castro Valley that I prefer most days (they stock the protein powder I put in my coffee) is a bit too far away if I just need to stop in and get milk and a few things for dinner. This used to be my primary grocery store, but.... Ever since Covid, they walled off the central section with the wine and medicines and personal care, forcing you to go through a separate checkout to buy anything there and has the whole area covered by security cameras. I've got social anxiety and I also hate any store that assumes up front that I'm a thief. If I need to buy shampoo or toothpaste (maybe they're hiding the protein powder in there too), I will drive out of my way to shop somewhere else rather than deal with that. None of the other stores do this. Did this place have that much of a problem with thieves that forced them to make it this much harder for normal customers to buy things? I keep expecting they'll change it back now that the pandemic has calmed down, but it's been years. read more

Avoid at all costs. I thought I was going to have to fight my out of Safeway. After standing at the deli for 10 minutes with no help. I decided to leave. There was no way out of the building. You have to navigate a maze. The security guard actually stood in my way when I was trying to exit. They blocked everything and you have to go through check points like your a prisoner. read more

The lesser of 2 evils in Hayward is the second Safeway off Foot Hill Why do I say this; the other Safeway is the WORST Safeway in the world and make this Safeway look like a gem. It's not a gem but It tends to be stocked up better and a large collection of food and sometimes it has good sales. You need to have a Safeway club card or you going to be overpaying like crazy. I use my parents phone # so they get the points that you can use for cheaper gas as well at any of the Safeway Gas stations. I got to give them points for that. This Safeway is always pretty busy the parking lot can be pretty full; it's not as ghetto as the Jackson Safeway for sure. People are running out doing a smash and grab as you are shopping so that's always a plus. This Safeway also has 4 self check out for faster check in and check out. I know this takes always jobs from working people. But it's way faster then the single cashier they staff here and at other locations. They have a pretty large Deli and they have small Starbucks so I got to give them a few star's on having everything most people want in the same location. The service is whatever here it's not good and it's not bad. I just tend to do my shopping and use the self check out option. It's perfect for someone like me. If you are shopping in Hayward and you want to go to Safeway avoid the Jackson location like the PLAGUE and go to the foothill location. I have always shopped at this Safeway. There's plenty of parking and usually it's pretty organized. I don't get what's going on with the liquor aisle being caged in. In any event today Jan2022, their credit cards machines aren't processing Visa cards so if anyone is planing on shopping here bring cash or you'll be out of luck. FYI cashiers Told me they have been having issues with their credit cards payment machines for a couple of days so far. No news when this issue will be resolve. Plan ahead and find other locations to shop for your groceries. read more

I generally like this store-- they carry some things that others don't... but MAN was I disappointed tonight!!! As a working mom with a toddler... I was excited to see some new "quick and easy dinners" (yes--- I could make this for myself but really wanted something I could get done in 5 min) The dish is "shrimp with zucchini noodles and garlic butter sauce".... Sounds great and healthy right??? (Especially as we are trying to introduce more veggies to our daughter)!!! Imagine my surprise when there were FOUR (yes 4) teeny/tiny shrimp cocktail shrimp!!! Yes, when I bought it I could see they were smaller shrimp but I thought there were some buried underneath!!!
