Her name is Krista and she is by far the most rude cashier I have ever encountered in my 20 years being here in the U.S. I've never written a bad review because of a cashier but I'm speechless on how bad the service I'm receiving. She said to me "sir there's a line" when I placed my stuff down which means don't cut the line, when I was literally the FIRST one there and then she looked at the people behind me to confirm if it was true and when she figured out she was wrong instead of apologizing, her response was "well there's 2 registers open 6 and 7" basically saying I shouldn't have picked her side. She was almost done with the customer and the other cashier hasn't started scanning. My brother is sick and waiting for me in the car that's why I was upset because I was in a hurry. Of all the grocery stores in Gilroy (which is surprisingly numerous when you actually stop to think about it...) this is, by far, my favorite. Their prices are always great, and I can usually save anywhere between 15-20% using their app. They have a great selection of traditional and organic goods, more organic goods than I can find anywhere else locally. They have a clean store, pleasant workers, and a great selection. Their deli is somewhat sad. The meat section is good, their premade foods are usually overlooked and drying out, though. They have a good selection of sushi there and a sushi chef is usually working so it stays fresh and assorted. Their sandwiches at the deli are also good, but every once in a while you get someone who has no idea what they're doing, probably someone new. I don't recommend them for a sandwich when you're in a hurry. Their bakery is great, a huge selection of goodies and bread. I've ordered numerous birthday cakes and they're always correct and delicious (though stay away from the ice cream cakes- the frosting is... unknown). Their butchers are always very helpful and if it looks like they are out of something, they typically have extra in the back so don't be afraid to ask. If you go with your kiddos, they offer a free cookie AND a free latex balloon. Always makes my trips a million times easier. Give a ballon in the beginning to keep them entertained, then a cookie at the end if they were well behaved. Works like a charm and it's the exact order I walk through the store. read more

My brother and I unfortunately on June 9th, had an unpleasant encounter with the evening PIC Jeremy over a slice of Tres Leches cake. I have been a happy customer of this store for over 15+ years. My brother and I came to my mom's rescue of her weekly craving of her favorite cake,( it can only be from Safeway) The slice this time was 1/2 rather than full square in it's usual clear container of 4"× 4". We asked for manager to clear up the mix up on size, so here comes Jeremy with a stern approach insisting cake size has always been 1/2, Jeremy indirectly called me a lier. I told Jeremy, Thanks for calling us liers without proof, I assured him I'd be reporting his behavior and his response was, That's fine, My name is Jeremy. I asked a few Employees where I can report him and their comment was, Try working with him, He's always an A-hole, He treat's everyone like that...Etc... Very Unacceptable behavior. read more

I'm never disappointed when I order cakes from Safeway bakery. They did not have the cake design I wanted, but the baker designed a cake for my daughters birthday from her ideas. I love Safeway. Clean, friendly, fast and tons of open parking. I did stop by the deli and ordered a sandwich last minute. I've never ordered this sandwhich cold it always comes hot, so when the clerk in the deli starting to wrap it up cold I asked " oh doesn't it come hot" ? Well maybe it was to early for her but she had a lil stank attitude telling me I have to ask for it hot! Ok so done, can I have it hot? And proceeds to put the sandwhich in the oven looking unhappy. Customer service needs a serious overhaul. I've shopped there a a handful of times. Each time I told myself I wouldn't go back due to the poor level of customer service. I don't know the store well as we have only recently moved to Gilroy. This last(and final) trip, I accidentally got in the express line with a cart filled with significantly more than 15 items. I had unloaded half of the cart when the checker barked at me, "Do you have more than 15 items!" It was in that moment I realized my faux pas. I was slightly embarrassed by her tone and obvious annoyance at me. I apologized and started to put the items back in my cart. She continued at me..."Leave them there and don't let anyone else ahead of you. I need to get you out of my line." I froze. I couldn't believe she would talk to a customer like that? It shocked me. I have long shopped at Safeway stores all over California and Maryland. However, this is the first time I have ever encountered a store that is perpetually disorganized and constantly ill stocked. It either does not have the items that I was accustomed to buying from the Safeway stores in the San Jose area OR it is perpetually out of stock on a LOT of items. The first few times I came here and the items were out of stock I just assumed it was a coincidence or some extraordinary circumstances that made it so but then it appeared to be a regular thing. Luckily for me I am resourceful and I can make do when I have to with alternate ingredients but it is quite an inconvenience to say the least. It is even worse during holiday times. Around the Christmas and New Year Holidays, a few months ago, many customers were frustrated and making comments in various aisles about the lack of restocking. Even I found myself grumbling in irritation and I am normally pretty calm and patient! Unfortunately, this is one of the few shopping supermarkets in Gilroy and it is more reasonable in price than Nob Hill. Go the Safeway in Morgan Hill if you can because it is much better managed. read more

Over the years I have shopped at this store. Lately I've been noticing a decline. This makes me sad. Let me start by saying I have always had good service in the Meat Department as well as the Produce Department. Now here is where I am noticing the decline. When I am looking for something and I can't find it, I may be lucky at the moment find someone who actually knows where to find it or what it is. This sucks if you are in a hurry. There are products that I look for that Safeway does not carry and I have to then make my way to Nob Hill. At that point I have then ended up at the third store of the day because I have been to Walmart first where the prices on certain items are better than Safeway, then Safeway, and then Nob Hill. I usually to go to the self check out, because the regular lines take even longer to get through. But even the self check out line is so disorganized! Nobody knows if there is one or two lines and the clerk monitoring the lines doesn't say anything. The self-checkout lines aren't always available either. They had two or three of them broken for three weeks. And forget about trying to get out of the store quickly at 7:30 am. There will only be one checkout line open and sorry the self checkout isn't open either. At Nob Hill I can always find help quickly and everyone is knowledgeable and friendly, not just luck of the draw like I experience at Safeway. I know how the self checkout operates and I can get through fairly quickly in the regular and self checkout. My last experience was with the Bakery Department. I tried to order a cake and I wasn't sure what size I should order. I asked the clerk in the Bakery Department what size cake would be good for the amount of people I had attending and she said "What size do you want?" I told her, "I don't know. I'm not sure what size cake I need for that many people. What size is good for 10-12 people?". Then she replied again with, "What size do you want?" This went back and forth one more time before I thanked her and told her that I would come back later. I went straight over to Nob Hill and ordered what turned out to be a beautiful and delicious cake. I really hope that Safeway turns around soon. I'd like to go back, but at this point I find I have a better experience all around at Nob Hill. read more

I come here only because it's close to work and it gives me gas points other than that I would never come here. It doesn't have the selection as other stores, but really bothers me is the deli. Every single time I go, I am either waiting for someone to help me, the lines are really, really long, the person making my sandwich cuts corners and I have to correct them or they leave 1 person for those long lines. There were 2-3 others in the deli and they continued to stay near the meat and saw the line of 3-4 people for sandwiches. I can go to Tennant Safeway and get amazing services in every single department no matter what time of day. Yesterday I was buying a ham. It was marked 99cents a lb. Not one ham in the bins was marked .99 but I wasn't alarmed thinking the cash register would alter the price. Well, what a surprise. No adjustment on the cash register. I said to the check out lady that many people had probably been overcharged. Her reply was: they need to be watching. I said sometimes the items go through so fast it is impossible to watch. Her reply was nobody is fast in Safeway. I did get an adjustment but was also surprised that the weight was different after the adjustment. What was that all about!!!!!! By the way it weighed less. Everybody needs to be aware that Safeway is not the pillar of honesty. Beware and watch. I went to grab some groceries this morning before the games and they only had one of the "15 items or less" lanes open. They need to have at least two of these lanes open because often at times on weekends people are only grabbing a few things. You can't use the self-checkout lanes when you purchase alcohol so you are forced to wait in the long lines. The cashier seemed to be on auto-pilot, with the basic "how how are you?" followed by her yelling at a nagger to return some perishable items. read more

Not sure what is going on with Gilroy Safeway. The shelves are empty of certain brand name products, (Ritz crackers, Safeway coffee, etc) the lines are long on non peak hours, went to pick out fish one night and after waiting a half hour they told me the guy walked out and there was no one to help me. The meat department is scarce, or has cuts that no one is buying. I'm finding I'm going to more than one store to get what I need, after shopping at Safeway forever I'm disappointed and wondering way management is letting this happen. Okay I have to do some serious sticking up for my friend, Gilroy Safeway. I shop here regularly and, yes, it is older and yes, some of the people who shop there are a little odd (if you wanna shop with Gilroy's limited selection of beautiful people, visit Nob Hill), and yes, it can be crowded on the weekend. However (with emphasis), this grocery store has excellent selection, prices and professional and courteous staff who work very hard to please the customers. One of my biggest plusses for this location is their selection of gluten free foods which is significantly better than both Morgan Hill Safeway locations and Nob Hills in both Morgan Hill and Gilroy. The staff who work in the meat department are very friendly, and have often gone out of their way for me to provide me with the meat or fish I am looking for. The checkout line staff is also very kind and efficient, getting you out the door quickly. The produce department is well stocked with fresh vegetables and fruits. I'm not sure why the other reviewers have such seething hate for this store, but trust me, if it was as gross as they say I definitely would not shop here (call me snobbish, but there are certain stores in both Morgan Hill and Gilroy I avoid because I feel uncomfortable there.) I've been shopping at this Safeway store since it 1st opened. Sadly, it has declined. The employees used to be very friendly and helpful but it seems that the company has been screwing them over because there are only a few that seem to appreciate the customers and show courtesy. I was there 2 weeks ago and saw a rat run back and forth from the candy display to the ice machine. I approached the snobby manager Susie and told her; "Hi, I just want to let you know that I just saw a rat the size of a pit bull running back and forth from the candy to the ice machine." It didn't seem to bother her in the least bit. She actually laughed and said "yeah." She must have larger rats in her house. Anyway, I hope Safeway gets their act together 1st by taking better care of their employees and customers. I have been an avid Safeway customer my whole life, that is why writing this review is sad. I have a family of 4, so looking for the best deals is always necessary while I'm planning my grocery trips. It's pretty pathetic that when I get to a store that's open 24 hours, the shelves are NEVER stocked, the produce is also not stocked, and what is usually is brown and wilting and most of the staff have attitudes that make me cringe when I think about it. I have 2 kids under 4. It's not that easy getting out to go shopping, so when I get a chance to go, there is usually at least one meltdown, sorry, can't help it. When I'm getting dirty looks and harsh comments from the staff, that is plain inappropriate. Also, if a toddler is having a melt down, if you're not related to the child, please don't act like the baby whisperer and attempt to touch my child. Because when my child punches you in the face, they will not be punished. You should know better, isn't there a policy regarding touching children? Now let's discuss the newspaper deals as well as the coupon center deals. I have uploaded many coupons to my card, had additional coupons and still had to double and triple check and wait in yet another line because I was over charged for countless items, charged for items that I didn't buy and had to dispute a cash advance that I didn't approve and wasn't given the cash for. I am still in shock about how rude Kathleen from the Deli was to me today. 5.21.2016 today I came in to buy a Chicken Bacon wrap with my friend after we worked out. Kathleen from the beginning had a rude look of her face the entire time. She never once smiled she just looked at me and grunted what do you want!? I told her what i'd like. I also had asked to have no bacon. She didn't even aknowledge me she just kept walking away to make it. Then I asked for a extra slice of tomato. She tells me its extra. I'm cool with that but really? I didn't have any bacon, give me a break. As I watch the other pleasant lady make a wrap for a man next to me Kathleen proceeded to make me one of the most horrible wraps I've seen. In fact all she did was slop it together then literally just roll it like a enchilada letting it spill out the sides. I tried stopping her and asking if she could tuck it in so I could eat it properly she refused to fix or remake it. I was honestly tempted to just throw it back and tell her nevermind, burt I had to be at work. To AL and Caesar in the meat department. Thank you so much for helping me with my two 10 lb. London broil orders and cutting the meat perfectly for my beef jerky. I didn't know you could go in between certain numbers on the slicer and when I found a number I kind of liked Caesar's recommended going a half point down to two and a half and I said you can do that? I said oh yeah. And went back and came back with 10 pounds of perfectly cut meat. I left out of town for a few days but on the way back I realize the sale ($2.99 lb. Best price in town by far) was probably going off and I called in and said hey I need 10 more pounds, he said no problem I arrived at the store shortly after and it was already done and packaged for me I did not expect that, what a great surprise. When ( Andy ) approached me he was very helpful greeted me asked me if I needed help he called his manager ( Katherine ) and ask if they can send someone to rap my roses, She Offered to come and rap them for me.. she was awesome for going out of her way to help me and Andy has really good customer service. The sandwich area is terrible. It almost never has all the listed breads. Fountain drink machine has something broken frequently, now it is no ice. How does a grocery store that sells bags of ice 50 feet away have no ice?? How does a grocery store that bakes bread not have bread??? Why do people who work here act like it is impossible to solve any minor problem? This is a joke and characteristic of Safeway investing in the stores in wealthier towns and ignoring stores in less wealthy towns. This store has a decent selection of products for the average buyer. There is a very limited slection of specialty or gourmet items however. The isles are narrow and often dirty or cluttered. 3 things I hate the most: going to the gas station, bank and SAFEWAY. If it wasn't for their bakery dept and the fact they are the closest grocery store too me, I'd say see ya! It's always been a pit store since the day I moved here 10 years ago from Morgan Hill (which btw has 2 Safeway's that I love) and Gilroy has an even bigger population than M.H. I have written management at least 3 times complaining about not stocking items, the bakery dept out of their sour French bread at dinnertime (which btw is the best) and the ridiculous Self Check Line in Aisle 10 half way down the aisle and you can barely get 2 carts down each side of the aisle. I also said what would be ideal is to expand Safeway to Kern and make it a big beautiful store and add a gas station instead of all of us going clear across town to Costco. I have yet to ever receive a reply from management, so no surprise there? Over the past year now I have noticed Safeway prices have escalated, so many times if I'm going to Costco I'll stop in Walmart where their prices are still very reasonable. Come on Safeway with all these new homes here now, new tracts going in and existing patrons we need a bigger store on the west side where the majority of the people live???? read more

On the morning of April 15, I went to the self checkout to purchase a few items. I was doing two separate transactions, one on a card and one with cash. The cashier at the self checkout area was not paying attention to anyone. I tried several times to make eye contact and greet her, but she was on her phone. I completed the first transaction, and set the two items aside to purchase my grocery items on my card. Not even two items into the second transaction, the cashier approaches me and tells me I did not pay for the first two items..maybe if she wasn't on her phone and actually paying attention to customers, she would see that I had in fact paid for those items and still had the receipt in my hand. I tried to show her the receipt, she declined to look at it. The whole experience was progressively more awkward from there. Every time I would scan at item, she would glare at me and my basket to make sure the quantity of items I had entered in the computer was in fact the same amount of items I had in my hand. I did not see her do this to anyone else at the self checkout registers during the entire time I was in line. Once I paid for my items, she went back to being on her phone. Did not even thank me for my business. I spend up to $100 a week at this Safeway, and I'm just really disappointed in the quality of customer service at this location.
