It is that time of year where I get to play Scrooge (but I don't like to). Consider this a public service announcement. The Gilroy Safeway is to be avoided at all cost. For some reason this store thinks its customers need them more than they need us. I find the employees have raised rudeness to customers to a new level. This rudeness issue tells me the employees hate their management and since the employees can't take out their frustration on management, they turn it towards their customers. Being a large chain one would think the store would have lower prices due to large buying power, that's a BIG NYET! I have price checked this store against smaller grocery stores as far away as Aptos, Santa Cruz and Watsonville and Safeway is always higher in price. This review is for the deli department. I am familiar with their signature sandwich menu, but decided to create my own. The sandwiches are HUGE! A bit pricey, but I always get the regular because I can't eat a large one. I ordered just a regular sandwich with: Cracked pepper mill turkey, pepper jack cheese, aioli sauce, lettuce, tomatoes and pickles on a sesame roll. It brought ALL the smoke! whata flow. Worth every penny, with fresh ingredients, mouth-watering and plenty of flavor. Safeways deli department has a wide variety with the ability to tailor. I come into Safeway almost every week. I have gone to the deli multiple times but will never buy from the deli again. There has been 2 different employees 3 different times that come over with gloves on after touching all the machines and grab the food with the same gloves. I have to ask them to change their gloves or use the tongs and get me different food items. I've reported them each time to upper management and it still continues. The worst customer service I have ever encountered. Received a Gift card at Christmas, (along with the Safeway receipt) went to use it yesterday and it wouldn't work. Ryan head of customer service put it all back on me. His first response was why did I wait so long to redeem, cards do not expire. I'm a little disappointed and grossed out going to the Safeway in DelRey Oaks, Ca. This store allows pets (not service dogs) to sit in shopping carts where humans who consume food put their groceries. I even witnessed a pet dog do their thin right in the aisle and the owner ignored it. I asked if she or anyone available can bring me my change that SHE forgot to give me to the front door outside the store. I was unable to get off my car again because of my leg, it takes a lot for me to make the walk from the parking lot to the store as it is. If not o would've just sucked it up and gone in. Just got off the store and was in line for about 15 minutes and did my own bagging. This was for a couple of reasons: there are too many employees "supervising" and not enough workers. Furthermore, the cashier was talking with the lady ahead of me about personal matters that prolonged the checkout. I also did my own bagging while a guy (a bagger perhaps) and a "supervisor" just stood and watch. They could have offered to help me but instead was engaging my cashier into trivial conversation (on company time). You are welcome to check your security camera to verify my complaint. Horrible experience going for a quick late night Safeway run! The cashier Miguel was great, but you can tell he was very exhausted as he was extremely busy and the only cashier available the night before Easter (like seriously only one cashier on the night before a busy holiday) . He accidentally charged me for Dragon fruit (which is quite pricey) I noticed when I was walking out and I quickly got back in line for what I thought would be a quick refund. He tried to help me get a refund but a manager or supervisor was no where to be found. I waited for almost 10 min as he walked around the store floor looking for one and the line just kept growing. When he came back you could tell he was just as frustrated as I was and I ended leaving without my refund as I could feel many people in line getting frustrated as well. Safeway you need to fix this, either have more employees available or open self checkout or simply close early. I think I am more upset about the treatment of employees than I am about my refund. Like seriously for a store as over priced as Safeway you would expect more not only for their customers but especially for their employees. Thank goodness for the Safeway app. I've been saving money by clipping my coupons ahead of time before shopping. I like coming here for that reason but the staff seem to always look annoyed or not helpful. They look intimidating or just busy talking to other employees about whatever. When I have ask questions about clipping the deals and they seem as if I'm asking for too much but come on things are getting more expensive now and saving every penny counts for me. I feel bad for the customers who don't know how to use the app and have to pay full price. There has to be a better way to educate customers because who can afford anything these days. I have been going to this store for many years. Over the last couple of years the quality of service has gone way downhill. In fact, oftentimes if you ask for help you get the sense that the employees resent being asked for anything! Went to the deli for a sandwich for lunch today and there were 4 people "working". Only one of the 4 was serving a customer! I was standing at the end where they make sandwiches and it was about 12:15 so you would think they would expect a lunch crowd. They basically just ignored me for about 10 minutes until one of them grudgingly came over and asked what I wanted. She made the sandwich....didn't cut it and just sort of threw a wrapper around it. I asked if I could pay there as that is all I was purchasing. The gal who made the sandwich said sure but turns out she doesn't have access to the register. She asked one of the other gals to help, who responded "nope....I'm off". Instead of one of the other 4 people helping one of them snapped at me "you have to go pay up front". They were too bothered to help a customer. Maybe they should be too bothered to have a job! I just started to eat my sandwich and noticed that the cheese is totally dried out and old! Came in to pick up 1/4 order of cupcakes for a birthday. Was in a rush when paying because I ran late waiting to get my order at the bakery and then having to go wait in line at the front to be ringed up (I was told they couldn't ring up at the bakery), so I didn't realize I was way overcharged until it was too late. Called to resolve the issue and was chewed out by a lady who according to the manager does the piping in the bakery. I was calm and trying to be reasonable on the phone, but maybe her frustration with the job and realizing she was guilty made her defensive. She told me she remembered making the cupcakes and the mistake, but blamed me for not saying anything right away! Obviously, I asked why she didn't just fix the issue since she had known it was a mistake. I guess too lazy and I'm sure just hoping I wouldn't ever notice or care. The order form I had didn't have a price listed, so I guess she felt safe. She offered free cupcakes for my next event and then hung up the phone when I was mid sentence. I called the manager next, but he was only slightly more helpful and was a bit defensive as well. He said he could try to help me out if I came in. I was not confident it would be resolved after these two conversations, so why do so. I also decided the $17 I was ripped off for is not worth any more of the added aggravation. Needless to say, I will be ordering cupcakes or cakes elsewhere for my next event. I came here because they had a beautiful selection of baked goods, so I assumed my order would come out nice as well. I am SEEING MANY SIMILAR REVIEWS commenting on rude service and just overall poor customer service. Likely stems from poor management. I don't know how or why this store has as low of a star rating as it does but there is a new sheriff in town and his name is Sanjay! Talk about a leader who leads by example I have never been in this store without seeing him literally working! How often do you see the person on the top working (aren't they usually in an office somewhere delegating?, conducting meetings?, relying on their assistance to actually really truly run the store??), not Sanjay!! Today, Christmas Eve - while the entire parking lot has zero spaces at 9:30 AM and you literally have to wait in line to park, through the crowded store lines and people scurrying around sans Jay is opening cases of Martinelli's sparkling apple cider while keeping his eyes on all the lines and the registers in order to keep customer flow, workers on point, and ultimately everyone in the store happy! When I went up to the customer service counter in order to ask how to spell the manager's name for the purpose of this Yelp review, the young woman replied, "we love Sanjay"! The sign of a true outstanding leader the tough, hard worker, and holding people to their tasks, also well respected amongst the team!! I went into Safeway today to grab some freshly baked rolls (which I love getting), but I do have a severe sesame allergy. To my horror the entire bakery section was covered in sesame seeds. Absolutely disgusting how can someone not clean off the tubs you keep the bread rolls in? I am never going back to this Safeway and I hope whoever the manager or shift leader is for that bakery gets dealt with. Totally unacceptable. read more

I just wanted to give a quick shout out to a lady working in the deli department at the Gilroy Safeway on first street. She had very short hair... I wish I could remember her name. I was there at around 9 p.m. on Monday and was having issues with my very first instacart shopping delivery. This lady was nothing but helpful and continued to check on me and ask me if I was doing alright. She walked with me around the store to find an item that I was having trouble locating and was extremely friendly.
