As I embarked on what I presumed would be a routine venture to Safeway at the seemingly innocuous hour of 5 PM, I was unwittingly cast as the invisible protagonist in an episode of customer service that could only be described as a poorly scripted parody of "The Twilight Zone." My first encounter--or should I say non-encounter--occurred at the hot food/deli/sushi section. Here, not one, not two, but five employees demonstrated the art of unacknowledgment with such finesse that one might suspect they held degrees in the field. Engrossed in their own affairs, these custodians of culinary delights were too busy to spare a glance, let alone assistance, leaving me to question my own existence. Amidst their riveting exchanges about Batman, Harley Quinn, and personal dramas worthy of a daytime soap opera, I found myself an unwilling audience to tales I wish I could unhear. Defeated, I opted for a ready-made sushi pack, only to discover another hurdle: the elusive chopsticks. Positioned just beyond the sacred barrier of the counter, they beckoned. Yet, my attempts to catch an eye--any eye--proved futile. In a bold move that felt more heist than shopping, I reached behind the counter and liberated a pair myself, unnoticed and unthwarted. Perhaps the most theatrical moment of this saga unfolded when I returned, driven by a relentless craving for seafood salad and a glimmer of hope that the staff might have emerged from their apparent trance. Alas, the aisle of neglect had not changed its ways. It was only through a Jedi-like mind trick and a direct stare that I managed to break through the fourth wall and make contact with a human being. This breakthrough, however, was met not with a greeting but a brusque redirection to another staff member--the very architect of my earlier auditory ordeal. His response to my gratitude was as lackluster as one might expect from someone who'd rather be anywhere but here. The exchange was devoid of the basic pleasantries that oil the gears of human interaction. In conclusion, Safeway on 1st street Gilroy seems to have confused customer service with customer avoidance. One can only hope this review serves as a wake-up call for a much-needed overhaul in staff training or management strategy. Until then, shoppers may wish to brace themselves for a surreal shopping experience that might just question their very visibility in this world. read more

Came in to pick up 1/4 order of cupcakes for a birthday. Was in a rush when paying because I ran late waiting way too long to get my order at the bakery and then having to go wait in a long line at the front to be ringed up (I was told they couldn't ring up at the bakery), so I didn't realize I was way overcharged until it was too late. Called to resolve the issue and was chewed out by a lady who according to the manager does the decorating in the bakery. I was calm and trying to be reasonable on the phone, but maybe her frustration with the job and realizing she was guilty made her defensive. She told me she remembered making the cupcakes and the mistake, but blamed me for not saying anything right away! Obviously, I asked why she didn't just fix the issue since she had known it was a mistake. I guess too lazy and I'm sure just hoping I wouldn't ever notice or care. The order form I had didn't have a price listed, so I guess she felt safe. She offered free cupcakes for my next event and then hung up the phone when I was mid sentence. I called the manager next, but he was only slightly more helpful and was a bit defensive as well. He said he could try to help me out if I came in. I was not confident it would be resolved after these two conversations, so I did not do so. I also decided the $17 I was ripped off for is not worth any more of the added aggravation. Needless to say, I will be ordering cupcakes elsewhere for my next event. Likely, Nob Hill. read more

Let me preface this by stating I have been to more than 12 different Safeway stores, so am not biased towards this chain on the whole. For the most part, I seldom shop elsewhere for groceries save for Costco, as I do like their lines of generic products, but I digress... I recently moved to Gilroy. Great part of town, fresh air, everything looking grand. The Safeway here looked decent, newish even. Well, not so great. Here is why: 1) No matter what alcohol I buy here, I am carded. Every time. And, by the same people multiple times. The same goes for the self-checkout line, which is an entire story itself, 2) Bums in the parking lots, bums asleep on the benches near the carts, drunk bums in the deli line swearing at people, two different kinds of people trying to sell me bird houses and tamales in the parking lot, 3) The self-check out area. *shudders* I have never had a problem using this service at my last two previous Safeway stores in San Jose. But this one, for some strange reason, is managed 90% of the time by a raven-haired middle aged woman that counts, YES counts what you put in your cart, tells you what to do in a condescending tone, and threatens you with invalidating your whole ringing-up process if you don't do it exactly right, which would be "her way". I'd hate to have to stop coming here, but I certainly have started going to Costco more frequently for basic staples, and farmers markets for fruits and vegetables. read more

Went to Safeway to Buy things on 12/21/2022 around 6pm. I was looking for Sugnature Phyllow dough, ound find anywhere. Atkeast asked 5 employees everyone said on Isle 13 on ilse 11 online 10. I could find anywhere. Then come to front self check and ask lady helping customer over there, I sad can yoi please help me. She said ask deli . I went to deli and ask the lady over there said it's not here, I don't know where it is. I thought Safe way has best customer service, they suppose to take customers to isle not to point in wrong direction. Then i went to Target and buy my stuff. Will never go again to safe way to buy stuff again. read more

This store is a joke and it all comes down to poor management. The plain closed philipino lady who clearly manages the bakery dept is awful, rude and should not have a job. Clearly she seems to be above the law and has the ability to not do her job, not treat customers with respect and still continue to collect a paycheck. I'll blame whoever the general manager is for allowing this. Thanks for nothing and I will now be spending my money at one of your much more friendly competitors. read more

This Safeway is a scary place to go. There are always homeless people lurking in the parking lots and it is dark. I am usually a Safeway shopper, but would prefer to pay high prices at Nob Hill or go to another city to use their Safeway. read more

The service sucks here. They seem to be more interested in socializing or stalking shelves then to help customers.
