Instead of including all the typical (and written as "included" on all sandwiches), the guy made me a sandwich of only tuna and avocado. Thanks, jerk. Most excellent. Fellow shoppers were polite even though it was just before dinnertime when the grocery store is always a madhouse. My hosts and I loaded up on tasty and mostly healthy things. We were most pleased. We paid a visit to the starbucks too, that may have contributed to our happiness and I wasn't even on a caffeine buzz, I got the lime refresher thingie. Tasty. There were plenty of checkout personnel during our visit, but again it was at a peak time Veggies were fresh, I had a bit of confusion trying to find the green onions at first, it'd make more sense to me if they were with the herbs (not between the lettuce and carrots). Everytime I come here I experience a long line and something that I need missing from the produce section. For example, today they ran out of cucumbers and baby spinach! And considering how they're understaffed, there's no one to check with if they have any in stock. *sigh* There goes the dinner plans... It's nice that this Safeway is open 24 hours. However, this particular store does not have self-checkout service and that has been a problem for me. I usually go here in the afternoon for a quick snack but most of those attempts failed because I don't have the time to spend 15 minutes in line for a few bananas and almonds. The bathrooms in this Safeway are way in the back, stopped here to grab a bottled drink and use the bathroom. I was terrified when I saw how the food was handled back there. Right nearby the bathroom there was two grocery carts filled with random food. I don't care if this was food they were pulling off of the shelves, customers shouldn't see expired food pilled into carts. This is a huge health code violation. There was huge boxes of trash right nearby the bathrooms as well, granted, sealed in clear trash bags. The back was a huge jumbled mess of boxes and trash. It's alarming how they handle food where you can see it, I can't imagine the kinds of corners they cut where customers can't see. I hate writing negative reviews but I was so grossed out I wouldn't buy any produce that's not prepackaged and doesn't require being refrigerated. read more

As Safeway Stores go this one is great. It's open 24/7, it's clean and as neat as a pin, the produce and meat departments are very good. The Chinese food at the deli has been a long time family favorite for a quick meal at home. The people who work at this Safeway are the best. This is my go-to grocery in Davis mainly due to pricing and location in North Davis. I like the Safeway Just4U online deals that I redeem with the club card. There are a couple of down sides. Checkouts can be understaffed in the evenings.The store is actually a bit on the small side so they have a hard time keeping fast-moving items fully stocked all day long. The best time to find full stock is in the late morning or afternoon. This store does not have a pharmacy, but it does have a nice deli, bakery and a Wells Fargo mini-branch. This review is specifically for Samantha, the awesome florist at the W. Covell Safeway. My mom had heard that Safeway actually did custom floral arrangements for events and that people were really pleased with the outcome. I was having trouble finding a florist to do my bridal bouquets so I headed to Safeway to check it out. The women there didn't have any pics to show me, but took some notes and suggested I call or come back when Samantha would be there I called Samantha, we discussed the wedding and the colors I was interested in, as well as the shape and style of the bouquets. I emailed a few pics of what I had in mind and that was pretty much the extent of it. She focused more on colors I wanted, rather than specific flower types, to make sure she could have the freedom to pick the flowers that were really looking great at the time of the wedding. She frequents the floral mart to scout out what looks good. The outcome? The bouquets were gorgeous, popping with color (I didn't want blah, boring flowers... I was going for a fresh colorful look) and exactly what I had in mind. When I told my bridesmaids the bouquets were from Safeway they were shocked and amazed. The price was pretty decent, too. My life saver for past three years living in north Davis! Awesome thing abt this place is 24/7! Yup you might think it's crazy and you might never ever go visit a grocery store at 2am! But this college! You sleep, work, and study in a weird abnormal schedule! So don't feel bad if you walk into Safeway 4am to buy a pack of ramen! They actually carry great variety of vege, including some Asian vege like Bok choy! They have the raspberry white chocolate cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory! I love that so much! It's convenient, reasonable price! The thing I marked down on stars is due to the cleanness of the store! Some of the shelves at fresh fruit and vege section look really gross! I don't know, man. It's a safeway. It's like me reviewing if I like water or not. Everyone's complaining about the long lines but I think it has always been like this (especially around rush hour like 5 pm-ish). The reason I know this is b/c the other Safeway across town is just as crowded. My suggestion is go earlier or really later. Safeway in general is expensive for grocery especially when you're used to living just down the block from an asian supermarket where good produce is $2 or less for a lb. If I need to buy a lot or in bulk, I often just drive to Walmart in Dixon b/c stuff there is so much cheaper. Let me tell you the price difference: puff pastry cost around $3-4 at Walmart and at Safeway, you pay $7 for the same box. I'm not buying that hot mess! read more

Ok, what is up with the thunder sounds when the sprinklers go off in the produce section? That is the exact image I want in my head; the vegetables going through a hurricane as I'm picking out a carrot. Fish is the most fresh on Wednesdays when the ad changes. The meat here doesn't have layers of fat on it like Save Mart does. Though, you don't know if you are getting either select or choice which is a bummer. Since there is high traffic here, they sometimes run out of items quickly. The floral section sucks when I went to buy a flower for the ex-gf once. Good location for grocery shopping and more. Davis is a college town and this is where most students on this side of town shop for groceries. The store is organized, clean and offers good services- atm, banking, starbucks, and free wi-fi. I used to frequent this spot for groceries and money orders. Hands down, the BEST Safeway I had ever went to. Imagine a supermarket opened 24 hours, with plenty of fruits and veggies to go around and almost never seemingly needs to be restocked! For some damn reason, they had a great great store. The service was fast, friendly and everythign was fresh. I just loved the fresh sushi at this Safeway store... I go here like at least 3x a week and the couple that makes the sushi are the best. Alex and Christine is probably the sweetest people you'll meet! Just tell them what you want and they'll make it for you. The selections that they have out are pretty good too. I think the salmon they offer here are the best in Davis...if you are a hardcore sushi fan you will know the quality of the salmon is better than the other sushi restaurants around in Davis. read more

They had fresh horseradish. No complaints here. The produce was nicely presented and it appeared to have a better layout than the Save Mart down the way. The shopping center it occupies was pretty busy, but we were able to get a parking space right away. Overall, I was pretty pleased and will be back to pick up a rotisserie chicken (at the very least) at some point in the future. Only strange experience was that our checkout lady was a little odd. Could be that she was just naturally spacey, but she didn't really seem all there. Bought my first bottle of alchy here when I turned 21 and they made an announcement over the PA system. It was smirnoff vanilla vodka. Never again. I learned quick. And just to show my age, I got all giddy whenever I saw Lamar Heystek at the checkstand because he wrote the most entertaining columns for the California Aggie. I should have asked him for his autograph... Nothing really interesting in the beer section. They have a lot of wines and a wall o liquor though. There's a Starbucks and a Wells Fargo in the store. Their produce looks fresh, decently priced. Store is relatively clean, well kept, well stocked, and OPEN 24 hours! I swear there's never enough checkers at this Safeway. I know turning a profit at groceries is tough...it definitely comes at the expense of the customers at this location. After noticing 3 lines going down the grocery aisles, I asked the guy in produce if he could check to alleviate the wait. He told me it's against their rules...that he could, but that would leave no one to stock the fruits and veggies. Which I would normally be okay with that answer, but the dude was listening to music and working slightly faster than molasses. Just slightly though. During my 4 years study in UC Davis, this is the Safeway where I brought most of my grocery. This Safeway have is not much different from your typical grocery store, and you can find most of your usual brands here. The product quality here is pretty good. I never had to trouble with expired food or damaged packaging. That availability and accessibility are good. There are plenty of parking space most of the time, but you might have to park further away during rush hours. As for accessibility, they are open 24 hours and 7 days a week. The biggest problem here is the long line of the checkout. Unless I visit during midnight or early in the morning, I have to deal with long line. However, the line can be really bad during rush hours. One time, the line was so long that it extend half way to the other end of the store. The cause of this problem is lack of employees manning the checkout station and no option for self-checkout. I am disappointed at the manager's decision to save the cost of paying for few more part time employees at the cost of all their customers' precious time. The best thing I like about Safeway are the sales. If you are really frugal, you will love how much you can save shopping in Safeway because they rotate the sale by brand for every type of food. As long as you don't mind trying out different brand, you can always find a good deal. As a result, I am always able to save from 30-50% shopping here. Overall, Safeway is a good place to do your grocery. They are always open and accessible. There are plenty of saving opportunity. However, you have to beware of the long line in the checkout. read more

Cristina from the sushi counter in the deli is honestly the only reason why I come to this Safeway for my grocery shopping each week! She is so unbelievably kind and she effortlessly makes me my custom rolls whenever she sees me, using the freshest, tastiest ingredients. The quality of her sushi completely trumps any other grocery store's sushi (including other Safeways), so I don't mind making the longer drive to do my grocery shopping here. Cristina and Alex are so genuine and TRULY care about their customers' satisfaction. From what I have seen, they not only make me, but every other customer, feel so cared for and valued. As strange as it may sound, they almost feel like family, and provide such positive connotations for my Safeway experiences, and put me in a great mood for the rest of my shopping trips. I also had the pleasure of being checked out by Marybeth for the first time last week, and she completely radiates joy as well. You can tell that she loves the people she works with and has beautiful loyalties to them, and she has such an appreciation and love for her customers as well. She was also so knowledgable and answered all the questions I had. I can't believe what wonderful staff this Safeway is able to have. Their happiness is contagious, and although Trader Joe's, The Nugget, Whole Foods, etc. all have their pros and are more convenient, I will keep coming back to this Safeway as long as I live in Davis! read more

I can't go to the Safeway in South Davis anymore - after 12 years. The checkout lines have become intolerable. They need to get another bank of self-checkout or more checkers. There is not a time - day or night - when the lines are reasonable. Many times I have abandoned my cart rather than wait 20 minutes to checkout. The Nugget is close by and is a better choice. Safeway always tends to err on the more expensive side of groceries, and I didn't realize it until Trader Joe's moved in. Since then, Safeway has turned into my "late night cake/milk/sushi run" store simply because of it's 24/7 convenience. I love that it's open anytime I might be wanting a snack, and because of that it gets 3 stars on its own. However, I must agree with others. Almost every instance I've gone into this store (11am on a weekday, 2am on a Thursday, 11pm on a Saturday...) the lines just seem long. I'm willing to wait that long, yes. But it just seems ridiculous they're always so bad. As far as their produce, I can always count on Safeway to have very fresh produce. It can be a bit more expensive than other stores, but I know it's quality if I can't make it out to the farmer's market. They also have a pretty good meat selection and their deli is one of the only places I trust purchasing meat from. read more

Constantly understaffed and the shelves frequently empty. I like Safeway as a chain but this one is terribly managed. Never more than two or three checkout lines open with people stacked up 20 deep. OK I get that big rushes of people are sometimes hard to judge but I go back time after time and it is always that way, In fact it is the norm not the exception. They have a somewhat captive market with apartments and senior facilities all around their store so they can get away with it. I now go to the Safeway across town which is just the opposite. Don't know who the current manager is but the white middle aged blonde one with glasses contributed to a toxic work environment by singling out employees in front of customers and once asked me for my dad's name and location because she felt like interrogating me on which Safeway he worked at after I used our family employee rewards phone number at check out. She was very rude and condescending. I've had 2 other bad experiences with employees who were also rude here, luckily also both cashiers, so I could avoid their line next time. read more

I just ordered an oven roasted chicken breast sandwich and the chicken was raw! On top of that... the parts of the chicken that i tried to eat where terribly hard to bite.
