I guess an update is needed after 10 years from my first review. Their Safeway For U (rebranded from Just 4 U) still has issues. Just yesterday the price tags on the shelves showed special For U pricing, but the offers did not show up on the app. They have also redesigned the cooler section holding the milks and juices. Now the top shelf is even taller and I can't reach it at all. I stand there looking for an employee to help to no avail. Eventually my husband catches up to me and can get his juice, but sometimes I have to shop alone. This store still does not have a great selection of items. I sometimes have to go across town to the other Safeway to get things or shop at another company's store. Some items are always on special, they never seem to be offered at full price if you have a Safeway For U card. Isn't that misleading? read more

We've been a quiet Safeway customer. No reviews. nothing crazy. We just come and go for groceries. Every time, rain or shine, night or day, we always somehow run into David. And this isn't like something we avoid, but David's just such a great guy. Always helpful, cracking jokes and making EVERYONE laugh. We read some previous reviews, and I guess the manager is some guy named Lloyd. Yeah, that's gotta change because David has manager written ALL OVER HIM. Just wanted to give a big shout out to the floral department specifically - Michelle was the only name I remembered to get, but I talked to a few different employees over the course of a few different phone calls. I placed an order for funeral flower arrangements through a third party floral company and the order was sent to the Safeway floral department to get fulfilled. There was a big issue with my order on the third party company's end, and the floral staff at Safeway went above and beyond to try and help me resolve the situation even though the issue wasn't on their end. Even going so far as to rearrange things so that I would be able to pick up my order a little earlier than expected. I'm so grateful for the kindness and empathy Safeway floral staff had for my situation, thank you!! read more

Lloyd Alton. Manager of this safeway complete fucking asshole. Safeway is NOT required to check all ids especially for ones NOT purchasing the alchohol. My partner and i came in to buy groceries for the 4th of july and this douchebag demanded to check all ids even of people not purchasing alcohol. unfortunately i did not have my physical id on me... my partner (who was purchasing the alcohol) DID HAVE THEIR ID. Lloyd refused to sell my partner the alcohol. Was very very disrespectful and refused to give us the Customer complaint phone number. This Safeway location has the best bakery with great service I like to go early so that there's not a wait because my cakes are nowhere near ordinary I have been coming here for about five years and I recommend requesting for Stephanie to design and make your cake she goes above and beyond whether it's for sports events kids birthday parties, anniversaries she is the best baker at this location!! read more

It's about what you'd expect from a Safeway. All the employees I've interacted with have been nice though. Sometimes the self-check out decides it doesn't like the way I scanned something and the employees are always very understanding and super efficient at dealing with it. The bakery is good too. Quality varies from Safeway to Safeway and I've been pretty satisfied with my experiences here. The fruit isn't very good and overpriced. There are a lot of good deals on meat though. Newspaper prices are quite good. I had to purchased a newspaper from here and compared the prices with the same issue at other stores around Davis and the newspapers here were considerably cheaper. read more

I had to run in to this Safeway today to get a birthday cake for my boss. I had NO time but I knew he liked a specific filling and cake flavor that I would need to get. Stephanie in the bakery greeted me quickly and made an entire small white cake with lemon filling FAST. She even made a quick whipped cream frosting! She saved my day and my work life lol. A terrible store from a terrible chain. Only 1 checker at all times...no matter how long the line is.

I would have rated them higher at the beginning of the pandemic when they were actually trying to enforce distancing. They had a one way up and down system and reminders in the intercom to follow it and to be mindful of distancing guidelines. Kind of hard to understand why they would take this away during the worst case numbers of the pandemic. As of late they haven't been opening self service checkouts in the morning. I think by 8am /8:30 you should definitely have self service checkouts open. I like to limit my in person interactions as much as possible in stores and I always choose to self checkout when possible, it moves faster and you're not standing face to face with a person, yes they have plexiglass at their checkouts but it doesn't actually cover the payment area. Which is definitely less than 6ft between customer and worker. Aside from that if I'm in a store early it's because I need to grab something in a hurry. Having self checkouts is much faster than being in a queue down the aisles. Which in turn makes the aisles too crowded for both those trying to find something on a shelf and the ones standing in line blocking said shelves. Aside from all this the store is generally clean, has everything you could want/need, and normally at a better price than some of the other stores in Davis read more

Safeway is not the business we remember. The interactions with the employees used to be a positive part of the experience. The new employees there are not friendly and the guest service is horrible. They make it feel like it is your fault if there is something that is mislabeled with a different price. For example we purchased coffee marked $5.49 but we were charged $15.99 with our Safeway Club Card. See photo below. They wouldn't honor the price on the box of $5.49 and said the price on the register was correct $15.99. The woman at the customer service desk was not helpful and a bit rude. We are definitely considering shopping at Nugget. It's a little further and maybe a little more expensive but a much better shopping experience. We miss the old employees that worked there. Shop at night when Dave is there. He is helpful and has great guest service. read more

My review is based on in person breakfast order from the deli. It's amazing that they have the delivery option with doordash ( might try that next time ). The deli us open at 6 am!!! I ordered four breakfast burritos at 7 am . Placed my order grabbed a few things while she cooked them and I was out of there in 30 mins. Great service and lots of yummy options. This Yelp Review is for Jaime. Last week I visited this Safeway location to pick up dinner ingredients. After paying for my groceries, I walked back to my car and attempted to start it. Unfortunately, it wouldn't start and I saw Jaime walking towards my direction so I asked her kindly if she could give me a jump start. Jaime didn't even hesitate and drove her mid size SUV next to my stalled car. What a life saver!!!! But what I noticed before I drove off, I saw Jaime walking back to the store. I didn't realize that she was on a lunch break when we were jump starting my car. I FELT SO BAD. I wanted to make sure she gets KUDOS for her kind gesture and being an overall AWESOME PERSON. Having a 24 hr. grocery store in the area cannot be more helpful/destructive to a college student. So many midnight runs have been made for pity ice cream and drinks for post midterm depression. You would think that going to the store 2am in the morning would be a bit dangerous but I've always felt super safe in here with the store brightly lite. It's one of the cleanest safeway I've seen (except after a grocery rush of shoppers for the 5 dollar deals). They always have products stocked and employees are always very helpful when I'm just too tired to think about where an item might be/walk around to find it. They have a varity of food, even shredded dried pork in the Asian section (which was a huge surprise to me since not everyone knows too much about it). If I don't have time to head to Sac. for Chinese rice crackers, I can always find some with Botan candy too :]. I love the 10 for 10 deal on cucumbers since I always go through it quick (sharing with hamster that loves cucumbers...). In the meat department, I can always count on finding fresh salmon among other items. Service wise, people are very friendly here from giving out rain checks to replace milk jugs that look weird. Downloading the Safeway app has saved me more money than coupon clipping. On top of savings, they also have gas reward points that knock off 20cents per gallon at Chevron. With all the discounts, it makes it really hard not to grab an extra bag of snacks that has been justified by "but it's on sale..." My go to place to buy groceries, snacks, and alcohol these past 2-3 years! It's a 5 minute walk from my apartment, which is awwwesome! I love the Just4u deals they have. Everything is so affordable :) Definitely download the Safeway app. You'll save a ton! The free wifi and AC during hot days are bonuses! People who work here are really chill. Safeway is one of those grocery stores that is never my favorite but always appreciated to have nearby. They have almost everything you'd need but the prices really depend on whether or not there's a sale. I'd probably avoid shopping here if I didn't have a Safeway card since the base prices on most items are moderate to high. This store is average compared to the other Safeway's I've been to. Staff is hit and miss but they do a decent job stocking and organizing. The food service is either super friendly or completely ignores you. Mixed bag here. Safeway carries all the major brands and usually there's deals every other week so stock up whenever you see those yellow tags! read more

Lots of essentials missing or empty. Lactose milk almost all gone. Had to resort to quart size cuz ALL the half gallons of every brand is gone. I'm mostly here to make a complaint but I'll highlight the pros first. Safeway has great prices and large variety of goods. I haven't interacted much with its associates but they seem friendly enough. The first time I received an e-gift card the associate used it with no problem. The second time I received an e-gift card the associate mentioned how the e-gift cards wouldn't scan all the time but he still tried. Fortunately, I was able to use my e-gift card for that transaction. - The third time (which was today) I showed my e-gift card to the cashier and he refused to even try to scan it. He simply told me it didn't work. I mentioned how I used an e gift card last time and he stayed silent. ***Here's my main issue. It takes less than 10 seconds to even try and scan my electronic gift card off of my phone. Especially, since I already had it pulled up. Fortunately I had other methods of payment but there are no signs in the store mentioning that e-gift card can't be used. I walked 2 miles in the cold rain just to be denied a service that you guys offer. It's baffling. I'll continue shopping here but it's a small yet very disappointing detail that ruins a loyal customers entire experience. read more

Great place for college kids to get pretty much everything. I lived by this Safeway for 3 years, and this place was a godsend due to the fact that it is open 24/7. You never know when you need another bottle of Jameson or Fireball at 1am for the party that didn't have enough alcohol or maybe even a steak dinner at 3am when you're working your ass off on a 10 page paper that's only worth like 10% of your grade. Anyways, the employees here are pretty great. A lot of them try to make small talk when you check out, especially the older Asian guy (Dave?), who is quite hilarious. The store is pretty well stocked except around finals, breaks and special events such as Picnic Day, then the store is still well stocked....except for the alcohol. I'd say that about 95% of the time I have shopped at this Safeway location, it was to buy alcohol. Whether it be beer, wine, liquor, champagne, they have it all! I really like how they have the champagne located right next to the orange juice to make mimosas! Also, if you're a Safeway member they have a lot of great deals for alcohol and food. I just wish they had more lines open at night. They typically only have 1 or 2 workers after 9 pm. and the rest of the people use the self serve line which is useless for people buying drinks. They have good deals especially if you check the J4U app. Sometimes steep discounts on seafood/meats (best by dates expire in next couple of days) which I recommend if you plan to cook it the day of.. Risky if you plan to wait a couple days before cooking. Spend the extra couple bucks, food poisoning is so not worth. reason for the 3 star rating: BUYERS BEWARE OF EXPIRED ITEMS ON THE SHELVES. The workers are generally nice here and helpful. This place is much more bigger than in North Davis. Yet, but for living in North Davis for 3 years and being used the set up there, this place is confusing and I can never find anything!! Why can't they make all the Safeway set ups the same! Well I don't know how much you can say about a super market, I guess if you want to compare this one to the north Davis one, it is much better. I just get confused because I have lived in N Davis for so long that I keep getting lost in this S. Davis one. One thing I do know for a fact is that thank god for having 2 people work in the starbucks area! The one in N. Davis usually only has one in the morning and it takes forever to get my Chi! This is a to-go grocery for all college students who live in South Davis!!! I usually come here for emergency food and random ingredients needed for certain dishes I want to cook. If you have not download the Safeway app or have their card, get one! Sometimes, they have "20cents/gal Gas Rewards"! That's when I will pack my bag to go grocery shopping to obtain those points. Keep in mind you can only redeem the points at Chevron, which locates one block north of Safeway (how convenient)! Overall, the store is always clean and carries great variety of products. Just like any other Safeway, they have seasonal displays! Sometimes, it can be very festive and remind me of my childhood... Now that I'm away for college, I celebrate holiday by going to Safeway!
