I have lived in Davis for 16 1/2 years. It used to be a good store with good service. I feel so validated after reading all of the reviews from others about how understaffed it is and how ridiculously long the lines are! This is the case at least 80% of the time I come in! Doesn't matter what day or what time of day. I have talked to the manager, Rudy, directly and it still does not change! The checkers are nice, but this store is a nightmare because of the long lines!!! Trader Joe's kicks butt over Safeway and seems to care about their customers! I feel like whoever makes the decision about staffing doesn't care at all! They simply take advantage of this being the grocery store that many college students will shop at anyway so they do nothing to improve it! read more

this yelp review is not for Safeway but for the starbuck inside safeway. I am going to yelp Linh H who works at Starbuck inside this safeway. lol~ cuz I told her I am going to yelp her =D so anyway.. I dunno about the other who works there.. but I really like Linh's customer service. She was fast and she knows her starbuck inside out. She is best at making order exactly the way you want it. I ordered caramel macchiato with tons and i mean tons of caramel. lol... my cup is litterly fill with carmel.. it was sweet just the way I like it.. yet at the same time she put just right amount of coffee to balance it out. The deli at this Safeway sucks! I ordered a BLT and the lame ass chick working behind the counter gave me TWO slices of bacon. When I questioned her she said "that's what it comes with." I said "two pieces of bacon for a $6.00 sandwich?" I told her "to keep the crappy sandwich" and I left. Will never be back. Deli manager should get the boot. Love this Safeway store! The staff are like long-time friends. A big-time store with a feel of a small store. I usually go in the middle of the day so there has never been a problem with lines or waiting. Because the prices are so competitive, the wait can be long late in the afternoon. read more

I love getting sandwiches here, and the deli staff are always very nice. But, recently, there is one new person who is so rude and dismissive. Thank god its 24/7 because I get random late night cravings for stuff like Hot Cheetos and Wine. Not usually together though. Also the customer service always seemed to be very reasonable. I don't always get asked if I need help finding something when an employee walks past me in an isle, but I usually do. Be mindful of your surroundings if you want to make a quick trip in and out of here. This is a store close to a lot of student housing and where as you wouldn't expect anyone with a social life to hang out at a grocery store on a Friday night, this place is PACKED with kids trying to buy beer and snacks. Also, it seems this place never has enough checkers. I see about the same 5 people every time I go in here, and I'd say 80% of the time when I'm ready to check out they have to call every available employee in the store to help. This happens at any time of the day, any day of the week. 2 resgisters open, and lines going a quarter of the way into the aisles? Seems like maybe labor may be a problem here. read more

Safeway has fallen so far below my expectation of a good grocery store I now consider them on par with Walmart, except with higher prices. I will not shop any Safeway again. If I could give them negative stars then I would. They have a big sign that says "3 is a crowd" and only 2 registers open with 10 people in each line. My friend and I waited forever for one item and she was not too happy about paying for over priced water because she didn't have a Safeway card. My line was express and I waited longer than she did! I don't recommend a store that advertises "3 is a crowd" for a line but then doesn't have the courtesy to open up more registers. This is a big chain and should be able to afford more employees. read more

This review is only in regards to the DELI section. Usually when I order a Safeway sandwich, I would have to wait upwards 10-20 minutes for a sub-par sandwich. Instead, my experience with Fei was the exact opposite! She quickly greeted us and was super friendly! She also let me customize my sandwich however I wanted (which others usually don't) and didn't mind my requests at all! Best customer service I've ever had at Safeway. Thank you Fei!! read more

I loathe this store, but it is the closest one to me. Most of the female cashiers are rude and do not pay attention to the person in front of them. I have had lousy customer service numerous times. As someone who has worked in management at a grocery store, they should really fire these people, especially the long-haired gal who they ALWAYS have at the express lane. Pretty much in the mold of a typical Safeway with cheap prices that you find anywhere across the country with one exception; SUPER LONG LINES AFTER 9 PM THURSDAY - SATURDAY (sometimes Sunday as well). Mostly due to college students (like myself) stocking up on alcohol, snacks, and chasers for the night a long with a few people who made the regrettable mistake of going shopping for their food during this time of night. You would think that Safeway would have more people work those shifts to help speed the lines along, but they always only have 1 or 2 guys on shift. You're better off going to the CVS next door to buy the late night alcohol (much cheaper there) instead of waiting 30-45 minutes in those Safeway lines. read more

I go here only when I don't have time to go the extra miles down to Nuggets. (They do have good prices on wine.) I never expect much from the food or selection. The wait lines and service are usually poor, but over the last month I thought it might be improving. Then today I get over $100 of groceries stuffed into 2 bags. I knew they were too full, but I didn't realize how heavy until I tried to put them in my car. The handles broke. The bottoms tore. The first time I perused this store, making my way down the aisles...I was stopped at least a handful of times by friendly employees who just wanted to say "hi, how are you?" I come to Safeway a lot.... A lot. Living in North Davis and being a college student makes Safeway super convenient. They generally always have very good deals year round but make sure that you have your savings card! You have no clue as to how much you actually save with it!!! The staff is always very helpful too. There are a few cashier who could use an attitude adjustment but I wouldn't blame them; dealing with customer during an 5-7 hour shift with a rush hour of customers would make anyone want to tear their hair out. Having mentioned this "rush hour", be warned: between 5-7 pm (especially on Fridays) it could get VERY full so try to get here very early if possible. Other than that, Safeway is definitely one of my favorite inexpensive supermarkets to go to here in north Davis. read more

I dont usually like coming to Safeway, as I think they are more expensive than other grocery stores and there are ALWAYS long lines at checkout. However, my friend gave me a coupon for a free deli sandwich, and it was pretty good. In fact, I didnt even use the coupon because they were having a special: sandwich, chips and drink for $5.49. Pretty cheap if you ask me, and I can save my coupon for a free sandwich for another day! read more

We love this Safeway. We come here every Saturday to stock up. Employees and customer service are slightly above average but not outstanding. Safeway always has good selection and good deals, we almost always find every single thing we need and can get most of it at club card discounts. Plus it's open 24 hours! It isn't really anything much better than most other Safeways, but some are certainly worse than others and this isn't one of them. It's good. read more

I bought cold chicken wings from the Deli, the first time the wings tasted great, the second time half the wings were rotten. I gave them another chance one month later and this time 1/4 were rotten. Really like that it is open 24/7, very nice for emergencies. This Safeway is pretty standard with its selection. Very clean and well staffed. Parking can be pretty hectic as this shopping center is busy with many other businesses. I prefer going to Nugget. read more

I don't grocery shop here much (Cheaper grocery options closer to home) but I often stop by the bakery or deli for desserts or to pick up some lunch.The fresh Tomato Bisque soup is to die for. Its a quick lunch pick-up, for when i'm on the go.I also recommend trying the deli's breakfast burritos,they are fairly priced and the Turkey pesto sandwich is one of my faves. read more

I lived on University Ave, so this was my go-to spot for groceries (besides Nugget and Target). I'm from San Francisco where their Safeway's are always a mess and out of stock, so it was nice to see a clean, zoned, well-stocked Safeway. I am very impressed. Their employees are always friendly and helpful. Prices are good too. And it is next to bus stop! Yay! read more

This is re: their delivery service. I work for a company that uses Safeway's delivery service for multiple locations in Davis and they consistently deliver food that is almost expired or over-ripe and bruised. It happens with every delivery. This is unacceptable and appears they're trying to avoid throwing out or donating these items. read more

No matter what day of the week or time or day the line to check out is always half way down the aisles and the checkers take forever. They are always understaffed and when they do have staff they are friendly enough but move very slowly. The shelves are not always fully stocked so it can be tough to find what you need a lot of the time. It has become frustrating that no matter when I go grocery shopping I know I will have to wait in up to a 30 minute long line. This place always has tons of lines and the express line is the longest. If you see a checker Audrina run the other way. This checker is WEIRD and talkes in various accents each time I go. When I ask about an incorrect price they just ignore me as though I never said anything. There is one guy who is actually legit and knows his stuff and is always willing to help. I am dead serious about the 2 stars, and i really don't understand why this safeway has this many stars. Read my review of the south Davis safeway. I am basing this review off the various safeways that i have shopped at. Yes, it is open 24 hours but that is perhaps the only thing that gave it above 1 star. Almost every single other Safeway I've been to has been better. One problem with this Safeway is that their produce is always half stocked or they are out of certain things. I once came here to buy ginger because i forgot to buy it back home at my Asian market and it seriously had green mold on it. Secondly, their selection at certain aisles is abysmal. I may sound like a junk eater saying this but their chip selection is virtually nothing! all they have are the basic flavors, their kettle chip flavors are pretty much original, and salt and vinegar. Thirdly, they do not have safeway ads available inside the store, and i love using the coupons because i seriously save 40% whenever i go to south davis and only about 20% here. Lastly, their lines during busy hours are HORRIBLE. It does not help that their store is somewhat smaller but they should react to the crowds better by opening lines faster. read more
