The store is super organized and clean and open 24 hours! Very easy to find items that you're looking for. Great extensive selection for bakery, alcohol, greeting cards, and flowers. When I lived right next to the Marketplace, there will be times where I'd be here in the middle of the night for a box of bagel bites or drinks. There are always deals and coupons that are available too keeps a weeks worth of groceries (for a single person) under $20 and still have protein and vegetables in the basket (along with some snacks of course). You can never go wrong with having a Safeway card, you get deals (and j4u on the Safeway app) This Safeway is pretty much like any other, fairly clean and such. The aisles are a bit cramped though, makes you feel a litte claustrophobic when there are 2 people in one aisle. As for the ready to eat food here, I'd prefer to get my sushi here since they are usually able to custom make something for me or make it when I'm shopping and pick it up afterwards. It is a little strange that the fresh produce is not to the side of the store but I guess that's just how this place is (not use to seeing it like that, usually either one the right end or left) Final Thoughts: Always nice to place out a shopping trip, especially with the ads and coupons with the j4u offers. Safeway is my go-to grocery store! However, I consider check out lines very slow, even if you're in the express line. I wish they considered self-serve check outs... DELI FOOD IS UNDERRATED! I absolutely love wedge chips here, and the sushi bar. The sushi chefs are super friendly and will make it right there for you if you want your roll fresh. Considerably cheap. My favorite roll is the Philadelphia roll (salmon + cream cheese), but customize as much as you need to! They also keep in mind your grocery shopping too, so if you say you want to shop around a bit and come back just to pick it up, let them know! They'll give you a receipt so you can pay at the regular cash register. STARBUCKS anyone? Gosh, I love Starbucks. The only downside to this starbucks is that it is generally only run by one employee, so it's not the fastest service that you'll have. Plus, they do not take Starbucks complimentary free drink deals (e.g. filling out customer surveys, Gold card free drinks etc.) Don't forget to plug in your Safeway Rewards card when you check out! A week ago today I went to this Safeway location on my way home from work. I had called a couple days prior or even a week before to make sure returning this defective charger at this location was cool. The woman said sure, it's no problem. I had the original receipt , the receipt replacing the new broken one as well as both of the original packages. The young man who's name started with. Kha - totally refuses to make the exchange -he was bouncing around gesturing so mush I missed his full names. He says " no I'm not doing that - how do I know you bought that here ? We don't do that. I told him I spoke to someone and have all the things so ... it's ok I'm sure. I sort of laughed. Thought he was just a sarcastic ass. He says " no , you didn't speak to me , did you speak to me ? I don't think so , this could have come from anywhere." He shrugs his shoulders. I looked right at him and said , oh I see you're a racist. There is no reason to not honor your return policy. " He smirks and shrugs his shoulders . And says " oh well , I'm not doing that , NO." I asked to speak to a manger in person immediately. I told him I was done with him. He gets on the phone line and begins to explain his point of view. I told him to not speak for me and to ask for the manger to come to me at that moment. He just laughed and repeats his accusatory reasoning for not allowing each to exchange the item. It's stolen and he can't read the receipt fully, there's a word missing and it can be for anything. That boy laughed , accusing me of stealing and misrepresentation of an item in order to gain something for free. One receipt had sun faded but the barcode and price and description of the item were visible and identical to the other receipt I had for the same item except for the date of purchase . When the item first broke - I kept forgetting to put it in my truck for the next time I was at Safeway. So I bought another one. That day it was going to be all settled . Car charger , apt charger . I was feeling organized , haha. (((. Working 10-12 hours 6days a week, I was proud of myself for having all of the items ready that day , Within in the time frame, for returns or exchanges. I was happy to be off work and having Sunday off. I'm also young , very fit, healthy , intelligent and attractive so I was feeling good to just be alive as a Californian. Thankful for mobility and all the little things. I had been feeling blessed with all the fire victims and victims of hate crimes as of the recent past as I listened to news radio..." I don't treat others badly. Simply because I care about myself and that means , kindness and respect to others. Haha- until it gets real and I can't replace a phone charger because this ass is comfortable being openly prejudice. This Ignorant adult Male child , snapped my brown self BACK into reality. Racism is an almost everyday occurrence. Yes it is. yet - I keep it moving and treat people with respect. I don't have that luxury to mouth off and openly hate. When it's easy to be angry and hate when it's the taste that soils the ambiance I strive to create for myself- wherever I am - because the atmosphere out there is overruled by jerks like this. Being treated that way, was complete BS. And in no way was his silly self instigated by me. Except for those racist who hate seeing a brown person happy or not upset. That's likely why he was so angry . That is considered instigative. My happiness likely made him mad. I forget about those types until you make yourselves known. ))) The manager Appears, I explained to him and showed him what I had with me and how I was treated. He is obviously embarrassed by this employee as he ought have been . Matt exchanges the item for me and assured me the issue would be seriously addressed. I told him I'd leave this review . I also told him I'm open to revising it after I reconnected with him. He was normal and didn't seem to have any objective but to do his job well. I do hope he follows through. I will too. read more

This is an average Safeway during the day, but around 9pm all that changes... Despite the fact that this is a college town with college students on a college schedule, this Safeway doesn't feel the need to cater to its community. Every single time- not once or twice, literally every single time- I've been there late at night I've waited in line for an average of 15-25 minutes with 20+ customers in line and only one person working the registers. It got so bad I started driving to the South Davis Safeway across town instead of walking to this one right next to my apartment. Why they don't send another person to work the registers when that many customers are in line is a complete mystery to me... If you're a night owl, avoid this Safeway at all costs. The South Davis location has much better service. read more

Probably the nicest Safeway I've ever been to. The place is huge, clean, and filled with anything and everything. And their carts have cupholders! How tricked out is that?? Safeway's the best. And I love the lighting. Not too bright like most grocery stores. And they always have good sales. Take my advice and invest in a Safeway card. I mean, you'll save so much. The store is fine. The staff are nice BUT THE DIGITAL COUPONS DO NOT WORK. We have set them up before coming in the store and even confirmed with staff that we have them "in", but they still don't work. EVERY TIME. And then you have to chase down a manager or have staff agree to manually enter the discount while you hold up the line. So if you go to Safeway, DO NOT DEPEND ON THE DIGITAL COUPONS. You WILL be disappointed and frustrated. Or simply avoid Safeway until they fix their app. read more

This Safeway has been pretty good to me for a very long time. The prices are a little expensive sometimes but the member prices are definitely better. The checkout lines can take a very long time sometimes. It is a relatively small store considering how many people they serve but the store has pretty much everything you will need! The store is open 24 hours a day which is huge. Anything random thing you may need in the early hours is available to purchase. I love the florist in here as well. Pretty reasonable prices for some of the flowers. It's not as expensive as other florists (they are freaking plants, they should not be over $40 for something that is dying quickly). There are many options and I like getting bunches of flowers and making my own bouquets. A few months ago I wanted to buy donuts for my tenants and ordered somewhere around 300 donuts. Apparently, the back-up baker did not show up that day and the original baker was on vacation or something. The other Safeway in Davis had to unexpectedly make all of these donuts instead. They drove them from the other Safeway and I received them right before I opened my office. The manager at this Safeway was fantastic and compensated for the unfortunate events. I made a promise to my tenants and I hate having to lie or take something back, even when it is not my fault. I hope that that the dude who dropped the ball was held responsible. I had to wait a while, of course, but I got them eventually and they were apologetic and made it right. Sh*t happens but it's what you do to make it up that matters. I have gone to this Safeway since I was little. I have had good experiences and bad ones but this is a fine Safeway. They are constantly improving all the different departments and I really enjoy the food made in-house. This Safeway has been here for as long as I remember and I still shop here to this day. read more

Very snooty employees here, Im sorry to say. I have really tried to shop here because the store itself has a great variety and its a good location. However, upon check out, without fail, Im always met with a rude employee. Most grocery store employees will say something like "Hi, how are you? Did you find everything ok?" Some even make conversation and remember my name! But never at this location. They just glare at you, ask if you have bags, and tell you how much it cost. We were even rushed out of the check out line when the bagger wasnt done bagging our groceries today. Horrible customer service all round. A deli worker slammed metal tongs when I asked for service, a cashier refused to say hello while having ear buds in, the floor workers blocked the breakfast meats and ignored me when I asked to get by. This all happened in my last two visits. I've decided to take my business to the far superior Davis Food Co-op and Save Mart because this type of service is par for the course at this Safeway. If these were isolated incidents I'd let it go but this is about 90% of my trips. read more

This Safeway has good selection and decent prices. Having the Safeway card definitely helps and you can get additional savings by going online and adding extra savings to your card (they have a Safeway app to make this process easier). I like getting bagels here in the morning as it is way more economic and just as good as going to a bagel restaurant. The down side is, when it's busy, the lines get pretty long and it can be a little slow going. read more

This review is specifically for Cheyanne in the bakery. I had ordered cupcakes for my baby shower at the end of October. They were prettier than I had expected and were a hit with my guest. My guest were very surprised that they came from Safeway. I had ordered chocolate cupcakes with royal blue frosting. My friend added edible gold glitter to the frosting and we used star toppers off of Etsy that I had ordered. There were no leftovers. Cheyanne should open her own bakery. read more

The night staff go out of their way to be dismissive when you try and check out. You have to wander the store and yell to get the attention of any clerk staff who have headsets in both ears. Tonight they step up their indifference as three guys laughing and talking in one of the aisles responded to my request to check out by simply shouting "Yeah it's gonna be a while because the computer has to reset." They were acting exasperated as I ask which register I should wait at. Five minutes later a friendly cashier appeared to actually work and check the customers out. The get the one star is for being open late so you can actually make late night food runs. read more

I came at night one time and there were piles of sweeped up trash in sections everywhere.. not really something I want to see around produce. The lady who makes sushi there is really sweet though! So check this out folks, tonight we went to Safeway to buy some things for our friends birthday. We were there at around 8pm and we were trying to get balloons. We noticed there was no one at the floral department and we were trying to get numbered balloons, you know the ones that are huge and typically used for when you hit a milestone age. Well anyways we asked a guy, he has long hair, is white and avg height and works in the customer service desk. When we asked him if someone could help us, he responded rudely and said, "no the floral department closes at 5pm". We then asked if anyone in the store could blow up balloons and he said "we're short staffed and other members have different things to do and I can't control when people call in sick and no one else besides floral department can do it" and then left us there. I understand that they might be short staffed but the way he came about the situation was really rude. I worked at commercial stores like Safeway before and although I was not in charge of the floral department I was still able to help people when it came to balloons. I understand the floral department is closed but I'm basically getting the message from Safeway that all their workers are not trained in something as simple as inflating a balloon. If their department is closed, someone should be trained to at least help a customer with inflating a balloon. We ended up going to a different Safeway on Cowell street and their floral department actually closes at 6pm not 5pm so the guy lied to us about the closing time and we actually found someone who can inflate and did inflate balloons for us no problem at the different location. Either that coworker is poorly trained (which I doubt) or he has a shit ass attitude and is a jackass douchebag. I believe in the latter. Also, shoutout to Brett who works at the Cowell Safeway for helping us out with the balloons. read more

Love the location, although parking is hectic during busy hours. Love the fact that it's open 24/7, especially for those late night munchie runs. Definitely DON'T like how many of their sale items are out of stock pretty quickly (seems like all the college kids know how to jump on a good deal). Don't like how its super hard to find a staff to help you locate something. And not a big fan on how long the lines get at night (only two registers open) meanwhile the line stretches into the aisles. Oh, and as for their bakery, a majority of their baked bread goods are out by mid-day. Not good. read more

Although the cashiers are great during the day, the night time cashiers are complete opposite (there is a particular one that always seems to be fairly pissed off all the time, which I do not blame). This store tends to be fairly expensive than other choices in Davis. I only go here if I need to get something past 12am. Want to hear something funny? Think of it as a tip: I have the floral department's phone number saved in my phone. Why? Because there's an employee at the floral department to help customers. Ironically, there's no employee at customer service to do that. Think about it - the service has been so bad, I've saved the floral department's phone number into my contacts list. Poor customer service is a problem endemic in the Safeway chain - the corporation does not put a premium on the customer service of their cashiers. Let me tell you that it has gotten to the point where I only buy a couple items through self check out, which the Davis Covell location does not have. Yelpers, I don't know if these are the types of things we see with unionized cashiers. There's lots of great things about unions. But I know one thing, Safeway cashiers have no fear of poor performance reviews, and no incentive to work efficiently. Don't take my word for it. Go there. 2 stars instead of 1 because there's always an employee at floral. read more

One of the nicer safeways I have ever been in. Place seems fairly clean all the time. The prices are not good - but its in Davis and so its hard to find good priace. There is a food 4 less in woodland that really is much much cheaper. But, if you live near this safeway - its not bad at all. And open a ton of hours. Sometimes long lines in the middle of the night here - but that's how a college town is. Also, late at night lots of drunk or high college kids buying groceries - them are the breaks. So, I generally am not supportive of spending money at a Safeway - but this one is not too bad. read more

TL;DR -standard Safeway -long lines especially on Friday afternoons -don't try finding any ingredient less common than salt Thoughts: The bakery section is great for binging on junk food for your cheat days. You can't really beat $5 for 50 cookies, despite the fact that the cookies are mediocre. Its pretty much your generic Safeway, although it does tend to cater towards college students. So if you're looking for some lesser known ingredients, they may not be carried. This might also be due to the smaller size of this Safeway. There's a decent selection of pre-made foods which actually isn't bad. Having tried their chicken pot pie, I have to say its better than the ratchet Banquet frozen ones. I have yet to try their deli so I can't speak to that yet. As for the weekly Friday deals, make sure to go early. The store has very little space for lines so its not uncommon for lines to extend halfway back through aisles when its busy. Overall: As a suburban town, this is one of the few places that stays open late at night which is great when you study until midnight at the library and forget to do groceries. Savemart, located down the street, only opens until 12. Between the two stores, Savemart is generally cheaper when what you want isn't on sale at Safeway. read more

I swear there is no getting through the checkout in under 10 mins even if you have only a couple of things. I've never been disappointed until I came to this location. 7 pm and literally no bananas? Seriously? The night staff is comprised of what seems like 2 people. And there's no self-checkout. So there's no escaping the line from hell. There's no sense of urgency, and there never seems to be change. Although my hometown is the national headquarters to Safeway and I'm spoiled with multiple beautiful locations in a single small city, I can honestly say I've been to better Safeways at literally any other location. It's a Safeway. You can get most of the things you can get in any other safeway. This one doesn't have as many sugar free items as you might be able to get in the bigger stores if you're diabetic. Also, this Safeway seems to regularly be missing someone behind the counter for the cigarette section of the store (guess no one smokes in Davis). One thing that's odd: if you use "ready dough", and are used to buy it at safeway, you'll be disappointed here. Don't know why, but I have found that they don't have it. There's a savemart down Anderson, and it's walking distance or a short drive away, and they'll have it. read more

Two and a half hours late. Two calls from customer to driver and two from driver about delivery. Driver 'miscalculated' TWICE when groceries would finally arrive. Late delivery blamed on computer glitch and traffic. Some cardboard packages slightly dented One item was wrong which resulted in overcharge. I will report this. I will call to report this. Yo seriously Safeway, WTF? I have so much to say about this store (not Safeway in general, just the Covell store). First off, its always busy. I know its college apartment area but really? Its like the West Sacramento Walmart on Social Security/ Welfare check day. Its a frigging zoo always at all points of time. I feel like this store sells magical items that I haven't heard of but everyone else has heard of and buys every day except me. There's always at least 150 people in the store at all points in time. During normal hours they have like 4 checkout people, Common sense would tell you that if there's a line 15 people deep at each of the 4 open checkout stands that maybe you should hire more people because your store is obviously busy. Its comical to stand in line and watch everyone, you can see each person thinking "yep, this is my life now, wasting away at Safeway". I have a good job that I like a lot but each time I come in here I weigh the pros and cons of stealing my cart full of items so I don't have to wait in line. This Safeway is open 24/7 so after hours of studying for midterms or finals, my roommates and I love to stroll over to Safeway as a study break. We enjoy walking down all the aisles in our jammies thinking about what kinds of snacks we should stock up on. We stop at the ice cream section almost every single time and contemplate whether or not we should completely pig out. (We call them ice cream parties.) Even if I don't buy anything it's nice to stroll through the aisles at 2 AM. There's something about being able to buy things are unholy hours that makes it really fun! (Just like black friday right?) Since this Safeway is 24/7, to my memory, they have to reset the cash registers at 10 PM or 11 PM so the lines are really long and slow during that time. But another great thing about Safeway is when the terrible heat hits Davis and you want to escape to a place with air conditioning! read more
