    Salad bar
    Christian B.

This review is for the salad and hot foods bars only. The salad bar and the wing and Chinese bar are some of the best Ive ever been too. The salad bar was full of a wide variety of choices, plenty of fresh crisp lettuce, vegetables, fruits, meats and other toppings. The hot wing bar was full of hot, tender and juicy wings of all different flavors. The Chinese bar was full of all different types of delicious dishes from noodles to rice to sweet and sour, general Tso , orange glazed chicken, and many other beef and pork dishes, and the egg rolls were big and crispy. This is actually the only Safeway That I know of that has this multitude of fine and tasty options. The food here was actually better than some Chinese restaurant Ive been too. The only thing missing is that they dont have any soups. I dont live in Boulder, but for me it was well worth the drive.

Came to this Safeway location while on the way to Rocky Mountain National Park. We had subs made by one the the ladies attending the counter. We had about 4 made and she was not very happy about it. Subs were good though. Prices are normal for the area. The place could use an upgrade as it looks very old. I see where a lot of the low reviews come from. They do have a good variety of items which is nice to have. Starbucks is connected to it which is a plus as well. Checking out was a hassle and took some time. They only had a few registers open.

    Ew they have frog legs

The meat department smells like something of a foul, rotting smell. I am not a fan of it, the smell, it's too much for me to handle. However, I am a huge fan of their bakery, and deli and seafood department. They have discounted sushi for $5.00 which is a dream! Christian B. told me that Safeway must've bought out the previous owners who owned a mini Chinese restaurant and buffet section, because he swore it was the most top notch Chinese food that he's ever tried. He would drive 30 minutes just to try it again and again. So fun. We came a little late so it was not realistic for me to try that amazing Chinese food that Christian raved so much about. I really noticed this Safeway has a ton of features inside that resembles Whole Foods, like their self serve buffet and sushi. There is a built in salad bar and Starbucks cafe. The seafood department is highly organized and I've noticed they have just included the frog legs. They are new and very icky, but very accessible to anyone who has experience eating with them. only ction really is. The frong legs are not generally my style but hey? It's okay and they are only $5.00!! The balloon, floral, and event departments were ghosted and very empty. No one to help us in sight. They had a full register but nobody covering that section of the store. It was still doable. The balloons were adorable, I saw lots of generic candles, baskets, picture frames, and flowers. All were something that reminded me of a sad event happening. Not my first approach to come and purchase from this section. I wouldn't dream of giving anyone anything from this section. Too generic and not a lot of style. Overall, very big Safeway, better than quite a few i've been to. Please be aware of the horrendous smell in the meat department. You might get your smell back and running when you smell the loafs of bread and the desserts.

Sept 2, 2020 Man without mask sniffing melons (cucumbers, etc.) and putting them back in display. I left without buying anything.

My wife and I went to Safeway this morning and as soon as we walked in we saw one man wearing a mask on his chin and another with no mask. The one without a mask was handling and sniffing melons, cucumbers and what seemed like as much fruit and vegetables as he could before returning them to the display areas. We were so disgusted we returned our cart to its station and left.

I love you, whoever did this

The produce has radically improved since I've been here last. But still really overpriced. Deli foods are still old and crappy.

That being said, it is a real shame they have not followed the lead of a major national competitor and removed the sale of cigarettes from their supposed health oriented business plan. They have filled all three levels of this former bookstore facility. The basement level is the vitamin, supplements, first aid and quasi medical supplies that you would find in other chains, offering both national brands and private store brands. Plenty of sizes available which seems to be a failing of the big groceries and discount box stores. There is no prescription pharmacy at this location. Being adjacent to campus, they are serving a population that generally receives University healthcare which includes their own, and very affordable pharmacy. The main level still sells CU gear as before along with school supplies, tech accessories and gift items. There is a grocery section including refrigerated and freezer cases of convenience foods. The upper mezzanine level includes beauty, personal care and household cleaning supplies. On opening day, there was plenty of staff and checkouts on the main floor and the mezzanine. I doubt they will maintain so much staff unless they attract a larger number of customers. The prices are higher than you would find at a destination big box but if you sign up for rewards membership, it becomes far more competitive. This is true of all such health chains. Today my member savings was over $8. Get rid of the cigarettes and I will go up a star!

Thankful for Karen, who was so helpful when i was shopping on the top floor.

Far better for him than prepackaged trail mixes. He has done this for decades and has strong taste presences. Trader Joe's is a wonderful resource especially for CA grown nuts. I am not much of a fan of the store's other products as I learned during some living time in CA when this company was dominant in the town we lived. Prepackaged veggies and fruits don't suit me, nor does processed frozen items. But they sure are the king of nuts. They have many forms of each where appropriate. Roasted or not, salted or not. Today we bought dry roasted and salted almonds, CA premium walnut halved and organic dry roasted and salted cashews. Sadly we forgot to check if their CA Thompson seedless raisins ( sun dried) were back in stock. You won't find better anywhere. For general groceries , my favorite store is just around the corner and my favorites for brand name product is in South Boulder. What these 3 stores have in common is quality products in the categories I use them for, exceptional staff and store cleanliness. We'll go back soon for the raisins.

There's not much that's low-sodium, for example, like you'd find in a larger grocery store. I was going there for the frozen veggies, which makes life easy with busy kid- schedules. Not always time to pick up fresh produce on the way home. TJs frozen veggies were reliably better than anywhere else. They had really sweet peas, as sweet as sweet corn, that burst in your mouth. Lately, the peas are so dry and tough-skinned they're inedible. The broccoli florets are woody. There have been times over the years they were out of certain frozen veggies, and that seemed disappointing, but it was better then buying a bunch and thinking I had them to feed the kids, but then finding all we had was inedible. The broccoli has been woody for a couple months at least. We stopped buying that, and stocked up on the peas, but now they're gross. Since I went for the frozen veggies (and would just pick up anything else that worked for us there), we don't really have any reason to go unless they get that straightened out. Somebody please give me a heads up if it changes again!

Some items are now where they should as have been, like peanut butter is now next to jam and jelly jars rather than applesauce and baby disposable diapers! Who ever thought up that choice? But now all the chicken is in sealed packages rather than the fresh case. The staff has offered to open a package to sell only a smaller amount but I wonder how likely they will have time for this? A loss for me as I only buy for two people most of the time. Another change is that the olive bar is stand alone and no longer dished out into containers to grab and go. Much more chance of contamination from a different item from another bin. I still prefer this store for many things though both of the smaller Whole Foods location have a usefulness too. The previous in store location of Birdcall is now gone the the free standing location at Twenty Ninth Street Mall is still open and has seating a parking better than when it served here. It's nice to see staff members still working here for 20 years but also nice that some turnover happens for new energy too.
