While the lady chef sampling station is no more I continue to shop at this store regularly. There are tons of cheeses to choose from in their deli section (for at home cheese boards) and their pre order customized message cakes were a big hit last holiday season. Their app features lots of coupons including to the Starbucks that's inside the store as well as a free grocery product here and there (most recently Gatorade alkaline water). There are a ton of fruits and veggies to choose from with many organic options. If you are hosting their grab and go fruit salads and precut fruit are also an affordable choice. The flower/plant section always has cute things - most recently a succulent in a dinosaur shaped pot. The staff are approachable and helpful. While the lines can get long in self check out - it's not any longer of a wait than at other local grocery stores. Oh and fun stuff happens there too. Trying to use the restroom is a nightmare. They have it locked up. You have to try and track down the key. This is actually a form of discrimination against the elderly and people with disabilities because they need quick restroom access due to medical issues. Honored a steak sale that wasn't working weeks ago. Possibly best produce and meat sold at Safeway for generally less or comparable prices. Also in my experience, the employees at this and most other Safeways very knowledgeable and nice. Refused to honor their advertised guarantee. Made a special trip just pick up a roast chicken that was advertised to be "available from 11am-8pm..or it's FREE!" on a giant sign. I had a rewards point coupon for a free chicken and had been there several times to redeem it, but they never had any in stock. Then I saw the posted guarantee and made sure I came back at the designated time. I made the trip JUST to redeem my rewards point chicken that I'd been trying to pick up for a week. Again...out of stock. Feeling like a bait and switch at this point. So I asked about the guarantee. They claimed something about something-something-or-other bring broken, that it was out of their control, and they wouldn't honor their GIANT guarantee because it wasn't their fault. I understand...maybe having the chicken in stock was out of their control. That happens. But honoring their own guarantee......THAT is in their control. And they chose not to. I haven't taken the time in the past to post a review for the mature staff member at the 28th and Iris location who assists those in self-service check out (she is 50+, wear's glasses and has elastic support for one of her hands and forearms). She has provided consistent quality service at Safeway of a number of years. During this time, when so many of us can be pre-occupied and rather stressed (me this evening!), having a recognized 'essential worker' that steadfastly maintains this professional decorum is significant. read more

Safeway seems to be unable to organize their products in any logical order. Example; soda can be found near organic sand veggies. Once could not find cottage cheese in the dairy case...oh, it was with pre-made jello. Even the directories are wrong, they seem to be un-able to update the directory as they move products around. This review is for the salad and hot foods bars only. The salad bar and the wing and Chinese bar are some of the best Ive ever been too. The salad bar was full of a wide variety of choices, plenty of fresh crisp lettuce, vegetables, fruits, meats and other toppings. The hot wing bar was full of hot, tender and juicy wings of all different flavors. The Chinese bar was full of all different types of delicious dishes from noodles to rice to sweet and sour, general Tso , orange glazed chicken, and many other beef and pork dishes, and the egg rolls were big and crispy. This is actually the only Safeway That I know of that has this multitude of fine and tasty options. The food here was actually better than some Chinese restaurant Ive been too. The only thing missing is that they dont have any soups. I dont live in Boulder, but for me it was well worth the drive. read more

Came to this Safeway location while on the way to Rocky Mountain National Park. We had subs made by one the the ladies attending the counter. We had about 4 made and she was not very happy about it. Subs were good though. Prices are normal for the area. The place could use an upgrade as it looks very old. I see where a lot of the low reviews come from. They do have a good variety of items which is nice to have. Starbucks is connected to it which is a plus as well. Checking out was a hassle and took some time. The meat department smells like something of a foul, rotting smell. I am not a fan of it, the smell, it's too much for me to handle. However, I am a huge fan of their bakery, and deli and seafood department. They have discounted sushi for $5.00 which is a dream! Christian B. told me that Safeway must've bought out the previous owners who owned a mini Chinese restaurant and buffet section, because he swore it was the most top notch Chinese food that he's ever tried. He would drive 30 minutes just to try it again and again. So fun. We came a little late so it was not realistic for me to try that amazing Chinese food that Christian raved so much about. I really noticed this Safeway has a ton of features inside that resembles Whole Foods, like their self serve buffet and sushi. There is a built in salad bar and Starbucks cafe. The seafood department is highly organized and I've noticed they have just included the frog legs. They are new and very icky, but very accessible to anyone who has experience eating with them. only ction really is. The frong legs are not generally my style but hey? It's okay and they are only $5.00!! The balloon, floral, and event departments were ghosted and very empty. No one to help us in sight. They had a full register but nobody covering that section of the store. It was still doable. The balloons were adorable, I saw lots of generic candles, baskets, picture frames, and flowers. All were something that reminded me of a sad event happening. Not my first approach to come and purchase from this section. I wouldn't dream of giving anyone anything from this section. Too generic and not a lot of style. Overall, very big Safeway, better than quite a few i've been to. Please be aware of the horrendous smell in the meat department. You might get your smell back and running when you smell the loafs of bread and the desserts. read more

I had to call Safeway corporate and file a complaint. I had called Safeway pharmacy on the second. My meds were never delivered! I've been calling for 2 weeks! They never pick up their phone! If they do they put me on hold and forget about me! I've left a ton of messages. I even talked to the store manager who treated me like I was a Karen when I was nice! He didn't help me either! My wife and I went to Safeway this morning and as soon as we walked in we saw one man wearing a mask on his chin and another with no mask. The one without a mask was handling and sniffing melons, cucumbers and what seemed like as much fruit and vegetables as he could before returning them to the display areas. I live behind this Safeway, on the other side of the park. They make so much noise at night and wake up all the neighbors. They are subject to the noise ordinance. For 3 years I have tried and tried to get them to stop the loading, dumpster loading, trucks delivering in the middle of the night. They are breaking the law, and even though the police went there one of the nights, the store managers and the loading dock managers don't care. A few months ago I brought a long letter explaining everything and handed copies to several people in the loading dock and to the store manager. My letter discussed the difficulty for our neighbors, the law and my attempts to make them follow the law. But they are still at it! I have to move, just too hard to sleep at night. My next step is to sue them for disregarding the law and the pain and suffering. That store... grrr. read more

This store has taken a nose dive, most noticeably in the last 1-2 years. I've been shopping here for the past 18 years. Things started declining around 2016, after Albertsons bought Safeway. At first I thought the issues were just part of that ownership transition, but things have remained poor since then. I realize that in the grand scheme of things the problems I have with the store are minor, but when you frequent a business at least once per week for 18 years it's reasonable to expect some things. Here are the issues: - They are almost always out of at least one thing on my list. The outage seems to last a few weeks, but which particular item they are out of seems random. - They are almost always out of 1 gallon jugs of distilled water, but the empty shelf space and price sign remain. - There are almost never any of the smaller carts available. - There are almost never any hand baskets available. - There is a lot of empty shelf and refrigerator space around the edges of the store. At first I thought this was due to the new law allowing grocery stores to sell regular beer, but they have stocked beer and there is still a lot of empty space. - They cut their natural food selection drastically - They have several products stocked in 2-3 different places, so if they are out in one place you have to check the others to see if they are completely out or not. All of these issues started after Albertsons bought them. The only 2 explanations for all of this that make sense to me are either the management is just bad, or they are forced by corporate to keep their costs down, resulting in fewer staff to handle carts and stock items. I can only assume it's the Albertsons' supply chain that has resulted in the smaller selection of natural foods and chronically out-of-stock items. I try to frequent our local stores (Lucky's, Natural Grocers) as much as I can, but this store is the closest to me, their prices are lower than the local stores, and there are some things the local stores don't carry. I think it would be great if a King Soopers would open up across the street or somewhere nearby. read more

There's nothing exceptional about this grocery store to be honest. It's always clean, they're on top of expired product, and customer service is about what you'd expect from people who are underpaid in a high cost of living area. The produce is great except the apples in the bags are sometimes worm-eaten, bruised or borderline rotten and I wouldn't trust the cheap Azumaya tofu (I swear 1 out of every 5 has been rancid on me, no blame on safeway for that). The bulk coffee is really great quality, coming from a former barista and coffee shop manager. Get the Just4u all and scan all the things. Their signage people aren't on their game and there are lots of unsigned deals. It helps save a ton of money. read more

Rude and no regard for customers. The only reason I go to this Safeway anymore is to buy the discounted RTD sky-ride passes. I stopped buying groceries here a while ago. The customer service desk is horribly staffed and it's taken nearly 30 mins in the past for anyone to show up to assist. Even the manager has given a very rude attitude when working the desk. I've called corporate to notify them of this and they simply defend the staff there. My guess is that they are clueless and giving canned responses to common complaints. I've finally made the decision to start driving further to King Soopers to buy bus passes as well as the everyday grocery items that I don't need to get at Whole Foods or elsewhere. Save yourself frustration and time. Just don't give this Safeway the time of day or bother with it. read more

'Most everything that needs to be said about this Safeway has already been said. I have been a regular customer here since this store opened, mostly because it is close to home. Today I had to go here for an errand for a friend. Due to my own oversight, I caused my car battery to die. I went inside the Safeway to make my purchases and to ask for help with jump starting my battery. The gentleman who was working at the Customer Service counter treated me horribly. Just horribly. I could go further into the story and bore you with the seemingly endless details, but suffice it to say that it is not right for customer service employees, or any employees to treat a regular customer, or any customer, as badly and rudely as I was treated today. There was no justification for it. At the deli counter, where I also had to go for my shopping, the fellow there suggested that I go to the auto parts store to the south of Safeway. There I did get help. That raises the stars to 1.5, but not quite to 2. Still, kudos to the deli employee. He was kind to me, and offered a real solution. I am determined not to shop at this Safeway ever again. read more

This Safeway continually pisses me off. It is very clean and nice inside, but almost everytime I go there they are out of something I want or don't have the brand I am looking for. Plus the prices are almost always higher than King Soopers and it is always annoyingly crowded in there. The quality of this Safeway took a nose dive. Matter of fact, the few Safeways that I frequented are all getting worse. All safeways have a lax policy on their expiration dates listed on foods and food packaging. Worst of all, the checkers at two different safeways have tried to cheat me by keeping back food at packing or trying to shortchange me when I paid cash. This is a nice, large, recently re-modeled Safeway. It of course has everything you could want and then some. From a nice fresh fruits and vegie section (complete with organic if you so desire), plenty on offer in the frozen food section, on down to fresh meats and fish, good selection of canned and dry foods from most parts of the world, and then finishes off with the bakery and deli area. Includes a Starbucks, fee wi-fi, and a sushi bar (which is surprisingly very good for a reasonable price). The prices are fine if you have a club card (I hate these customer loyalty programs - just give me the everyday low price! but I understand their motivation). I guess the one frustrating thing to me is their push towards those self-checkout lanes - which always seem to get hung up on something for me and never work quit right. It can get busy at times (Sunday afternoons) and the checkout aisle fill up really fast. More fun tips are that the baggers are very sweet and kind. They usually employee someone who is mentally or physically handicapped and I love that Safeway celebrates diversity in that way. And I just learned yesterday if you bring your own bags you get a $0.05 credit for each one. read more

This is by far the best Safeway I've ever been to. They offer a normal produce section along with an ORGANIC section! They also have a nut kiosk! You can get any kind of nuts or choose from a variety of fresh, ground flavored/non flavored peanut butter! One night I was in a rush and left my wallet in the cart....in the PARKING LOT!! I didn't realize it for hours. I frantically called them and to my total surprise, they had my wallet. Nothing was missing. Maybe it was a kind patron or possibly an employee. Either way, I was so happy! My only CON would be that the cheese section is kind of broken up. They have a nice fancy area for some cheeses, but the average cheese is on the opposite side of the store. Kind of odd. read more

The customer service at the self checkout was horrible. The man was clearly having a bad day and decided to take out his anger on me (the customer). After the check out system failed to process one of my items (as always) I got the *employee needed* sign. He came over in a huff and threw my already bagged reusable bag (with two milks and some chips in it) and threw it into the corner, which resulted with the milks crushing my chips. He told me to "get out of the way" and nudged me to the side. He then took my next bag of chips, swiped the price, and threw them at the bagging area. I finished bagging my things and checked out. I walked past the man and told him politely that he needed to learn better customer service. He proceeded to tell ask me "well, did you want my help or not!?" The best Safeway in Boulder, and one of most entertaining grocery stores around for general shopping. The store itself is conveniently located off 28th St. (directly off the the Green Swan bike trail for bikers) in a shopping center. Parking is plentiful. The selection is great, but what makes this Safeway really stand out are the home goods and cheeses. There's an entire section dedicated to various kitchenware and living room accessories, along with a sample kitchen which holds the occasional cooking promotion. The cheese selection spirals along the deli, presenting everything from Big Flavored French varietals to American Cheese. If lucky, you may get a free sample. Clearance selections are spread throughout the store: a kosher section, frozen goods, and the miscellaneous rack hidden in the back, by the dairy fridge. Customer Service is ok. ON more than one occasion, the checkout people at this store are not friendly, and especially to non-white folks. I noticed a discrepancy in one of the items that I was buying, but the cashier said just pay for it and go to customer service. What??? I went for a regular shopping trip, this is the closest grocery store to my house, and I found a cute little Venus fly trap. I finished shopping and noticed the Venus fly trap had an expiration date on it that had passed. I jokingly pointed it out to the cashier, thought maybe I'd get a discount. He said he'd ask his manager and she said they were going to have to throw it out. The manager Samantha wouldn't let me even buy it full price saying they can't sell expired goods, definitely aware of the fact I was not intending on eating the plant, nor would she let me rescue the poor plant. Everyone in the store; the plant department, cashiers, and customers alike thought this was completely stupid. Shame on her. That plant was perfectly fine. I would've said nothing and paid full price had I known the manager Samantha would force me to throw it away. Don't ask the manager for anything, the bureaucracy here is ridiculous. read more

This is one of the "fancier" Safeways in town. I recently shopped there on a whim - I can't remember exactly but it was an , "I need a few things and I'm already running an errand nearby so I'll pop in." Somehow we got very into their deli turkey and their Applewood peppered bacon (both good prices for the quality) so I kept rotating them in to my "which grocery store am I hitting up this week" for the last few months. He also caught wind that I had had some trouble at King Soopers and assured me a.) that he would personally take charge of moving my prescription over from King Soopers b.) he knew the seriousness of the condition I take that prescription for and c.) that he would look into mail order options and get back to me with ways to better assure my supply of this prescription (which he did). When I picked up my prescription the pharmacist was prompt and helpful, applied my coupon,answered my questions about the claims in to the insurance so I could track what different codes on my generics list meant, and was also funny. I couldn't have asked for a more opposite and helpful pharmacy experience (as opposed to the ridiculously long-winded and unnecessary drama I had experienced from King Soopers)! Whew! read more

I will never shop at a Safeway again. Worst customer service. Their pharmacist need to work on compassion and empathy; after all they are healthcare workers. I first called the pharmacy with the intention of getting a few questions answered. The woman answered the phone and said, very rudely that I had to come in. I'm 8 days post surgery , clearly in pain and you want me to come in to get my questions answered? As I'm trying to get my RX filled she very rudely says she can't fill it (for reasons that were out of her control and I understand that). This whole situation could have been avoided if she would have spent two minutes on the phone with me. This is the please for you if you wanted to be treated like less than human. read more

So my family has had a Safeway card in the past. I didn't have my physical card on me and the woman couldn't look me up. I asked to get a new card and after my shop the woman said she didn't have any physical cards on her. So while I was checking out, there was a huge line behind me and I had to return half the items because they charged me full price and wouldn't honor the points. The woman behind me kindly offered if I could use her card for once to receive the discount but the cashier said no. So one by one, each item had to be returned. What a disaster. They easily could have honored it once, since it was honestly their fault they didn't have physical cards to re-sign up with. Will not return. read more
