Natural Grocers is close by and has very good sales. People who work there are friendly and helpful. The only thing is that on their website it is VERY HARD to find the price on products and sometimes the price won't even show at all. I've been shopping at Natural Grocer's for at least 20 years. The bargains are not as easy to come by as they were in the old days, but there are still many to be found. Their bulk section is excellent and fresh and offers many good quality items at good prices. All of the produce is organic. Overall, their standards are much higher than those of other natural food stores in the area and I greatly appreciate that. Check out can be slow at times, but other than that, this is an excellent spot for meeting my natural foods needs. read more

I recently stopped going to Whole Foods and now divide my time between Ideal (close to where I live) and Natural Grocers. I love that Natural Grocers has 100% Organic produce with a commitment not to carry anything that uses apeel or Organipeel and....drumroll....my grocery bill has gone down! It still has a bit of the granola vibe still left, and I enjoy that. It has also been easy to find help and get questions answered. I finally tried this store since long before it built this brand new location about 3 years ago it was in a back parking lot of another center, very old, operating under another name and so lacking in quality and quantity that I decided never again to return. All this was before I was on Yelp and if I had been, I would have given it 1 star. But recently I had heard good things about the store and my long term grocery was suffering under the operating changes of its new owner so I stopped in. It is bright and clean with friendly staff, check stands were manned appropriately. The selection is low in many areas that I normally use while grocery shopping but they did have several items on my list. Most of the produce was better than in the past, though a few items should have been removed prior to being available for sale. But the produce I did buy was just fine. The prepared take and go foods did not look too appealing to me. My regular store still has stellar produce both in variety and quality. And lots of take and go specialties, though not as fresh as in the past decades. I did not see any great difference in the pricing of this store compared to many others in Boulder. It seemed to be just a few pennies here and there. The standout in price in Boulder for comparative high pricing is still Alfalfas as it has been for decades. But this store has its place and if you are into lots and lots of vitamins and supplements it's your store, but I'm not. That's where its historical emphasis is, hence its former name, Vitamin Cottage. read more

Natural Grocers, previously named Vitamin Cottage, has been the best health food store in the area since the 80's, when they were the only health food stores in Colorado. Every single product is vetted by them, and all the produce is organic. This drastically simplifies the process of shopping if you are committed to high quality and low-carbon footprint. When I go to a mainstream grocery store, I'm really turned off by the incredible waste and ridiculous iterations of what should be fairly straightforward products, like shampoo, for example. There is more than enough variety at Natural Grocers and I'd rather get local foods in season than tasteless, exhausted produce from half a world away. I trust them and they have come through for me when I had complaints or questions. They are the real deal. read more

I like to think that when I step inside the Natural Grocers that I am seeing a glimpse of Boulder prior to the hear 2000. It just feels different (in a good way) and the store has an older feel to it (the Longmont store is a bit more modern and if I had to guess, about double the size). First off I have to say that this store has the absolute best Bike to work day stop. There are sooo many samples and people out greeting and supporting the bike commuters. It's my favorite and most looked forward to stop every year. While at this store I see and sometimes interact with different people (surprisingly dodging carts and people that don't say excuse me). It's honestly one of the only places I've encountered this behavior in town (by the shoppers only - the staff are friendly and cool) and I found it quite amusing when I was there the other night. The store has lots of organic vegetables (some of my friends will only buy there vegetables there) and loads of supplements and vitamins. I'm not sure if this store has many events (I've attended one at their Longmont location - A Gluten Free tasting event and it was amazing) but the staff I spoke to were not quite sure where or if I could find a flyer listing them. Natural Grocers is a great place to shop for certain items. Eggs, milk, nuts and grains are so much more fresh and less expensive there than at the Whole Foods store. Customer service is also fantastic. All of their people seem to be willing to help and answer questions. A good example of good value if their eggs where you can get organic free range eggs for 1.99 a carton and anything similar at whole foods would be 4 to 6 bucks a carton. All I can say is CHECK YOUR RECEIPT!! I was overcharged so many times through out the past years. I don't know why I kept shopping there. Well they have good prices and non GMO food which is great but if I was not overcharge there was food that never got put in my bag. Finally I went back to talk to a cashier about an overcharge and she mad a comment about it only being a small amount of money. That was it for me. If they charge every customer 50 cents too much that can really add up in their profits. read more

This is a terrific location even though the store appears cramped for space. The staff is always friendly. What I like about this store is that they always seem to have good deals even without coupons. The product selection, including fresh produce and meats, is very extensive. They leave out a lot of what I would call "fake" natural products that you might find in other stores so they can do more with a smaller space. Do expect to bump into other customers because the aisles are not very wide. The prices are very good though so that makes up for that minor inconvenience. Highly recommended. read more

Natural Grocers has been my primary grocery store since it opened at its old location many years ago. What I like best about it is that all the produce is organic. To me, this is a commitment to ecological and human health, that speaks volumes about the management's values. In addition to produce, there's a great selection of vegetarian items, including sweet treats. Even the vegan selection is plentiful. The bulk section is large with a wide variety of wholesome foods. The health and beauty selections are also large. Many of the staff members have been with the store for years. They're friendly and knowledgeable. I give it my highest rating. This is my new favorite store because all the produce is Organic, and the people are beautiful, kind, and helpful. It's smaller than Lazy Acres, but it has most of the specific items I tend to buy. Lots of healthy options. I feel its reasonably priced, heart the produce here. I noticed they hold all sorts of classes and stuff here. Great grocery store. Nice people who work here and a great selection with fair prices. They always have good deals. I deducted one star since they're the only NG location that doesn't carry the fantastic sourdough bread by the company "Bred" from steamboat. Some of the best high quality bread I've had, made with only flour, water and salt. No added preservatives, sugar or toxic seed oil. Please carry this. A nice compact grocery store - and yes, it's a grocery store, not a vitamin shop! They really need to fix their name - they lose so much business due to it. Their produce is first-rate, it is my main objective when I go there. Often cheaper than next door at Whole Paycheck. My recommendation - go here first for your produce, finish at WF next door to fill in any gaps in your shopping list. Things aren't quite as cheap here as you'll find at Sprouts, but the produce is usually more fresh and perky. For packaged goods, you'll find many of the same (slightly alternative) items you might enjoy from WF/Sprouts. If you're into bulk though, VC doesn't have any bulk food section and unfortunately sells a lot of pre-packaged bulk-type goods in non-reusable bags. In Boulder fashion - if these entertain you - they have a specialized recycling bins available in the front door. They don't provide bags, but ask you to use the millions of cardboard boxes which all your product arrived at the store within. They do have a super-massive vitamin and supplement section with interesting staff to talk to. Bottom line - if this store isn't in your quiver of shopping spots, it should be. read more

I do like the organic selection but lately they have been out of a lot of things and some basic produce such as bananas which are hit or miss if it will be in stock or very green and not ripe for a week or so. I have also noticed that sometimes the cashiers are way too chatty with customers thus holding up the line. Just like just today I had to wait an unnecessary 10 extra minutes for the customer in front of me talk about her ski trip with the cashier and wouldn't pay until she was done with her extended story and the cashier was totally engaged in the lengthy conversation not even trying to politely usher her to pay or shorten the conversation, or acknowledge my existence or the long line forming behind me. Her groceries were sprawled out all over the counter and neither she or the cashier was bagging them. I was kicking myself for not choosing the line next to hers which already ran through 3 customers while I waited and her customer only had to pay! This is a huge pet peeve of mine as I have limited time to do my shopping and I feel it's unfair that I have to wait longer because the cashier decided to take social hour on my time with the customer in front of me and really should not be having lengthy conversations such as this and should do this on her break or on her own time! I hope management reads this and can help cashiers understand that it's very rude and unprofessional to have these types of conversations when people are waiting. The store was very busy today on a Saturday and I know the cashier knew what she was doing was wrong how could she not. I was almost late to get back to work over it! There nothing worse than a chatty cashier when you are in a hurry. If this continues with the no supply issues and chatty cashiers I'll have to go to Whole Foods where I can use self checkout and they seem to be better stocked more consistently but I like natural grocers because it's smaller and should be faster to get in and out but because of chatty cashiers it's not! read more

For all of you who wish we had TRADER JOE'S, this is the closest, best substitute for at least 500 miles in any direction. It is a full grocery store, not just a vitamin place. I miss Vitamin Cottage. I used to shop there just about every week when I lived in Boulder. It has a great selection for such a relatively small grocery space. I mean Russian coffee. Where the hell can you find Russian coffee in Boulder other than at Vitamin Cottage? Don't you want some KG Blend tomorrow with your breakfast? The prices are great too. In some cases the prices of items here are half of what they are in Berkeley. That says a lot. The staff are very helpful too and will direct you to an item and give you info on it to boot. This Vitamin Cottage has been a welcome addition to the Boulder Natural Foods shopping choices. Of course, it's been here for many years now. And I shop here several times a month. It is a small VC with a limited produce section, but the produce that they have available is quite good always. I sometimes like to go to the larger VCs such as the one in Lafayette, but this one is so much more convenient for me. Because of the limited space one feels sometimes a little too intimate with the other customers. If I weren't the standoffish and perhaps a bit shy person that I am, this wouldn't really be so bothersome. I must make a note for New Year's Resolutions to try to LIKE the rest of humanity just a little bit more....or even a lot more! Because this Vitamin Cottage is a really crowded store almost all the time. They have great food and non food, very low prices on most items, they often offer the lowest price in the area on a large variety of items. I guess you would just have to shop most of the stores like I do to notice the differences in pricing. Since Whole Foods now owns Wild Oats and most all of the Wild Oats that are not named Wild Oats but were nonetheless owned by Wild Oats, Vitamin Cottage becomes even a more important player in this whole scenario. I like VC because it is not run in a corporate way at all. It is a relatively small group of interconnected stores that started in Colorado...somewhere in the greater Denver area...years ago. Well, I'm probably boring you by now. The parking lot is as crowded as the store because apparently this entire shopping center, which btw includes Whole Foods too, was built without adequate parking that is adjacent to the stores. I suppose there's nothing much the business can do about it. The city of Boulder so encourages utilizing means of transportation other than fossil fuel burning ones, maybe we all should get a clue and walk, bicycle, bus, etc. whenever we can in order to help save the planet!!!! read more

Despite the unappealing name and annoying commercials, the VC is actually a nice place to shop. They have "reasonable" prices on organic foods, and a really awesome collection of vitamins, supplements and homeopathic remedies. The folks that work there really know their stuff and can fix you up in no time. This shop is tiny, so are the carts and the aisles. This isn't likely to be your one stop shop but if you need a handful of the basics to last you the rest of the week, this is it. This is an excellent place to come when you just can't stomach going into Whole Food's next door with the crowds, the prices and their dumb-ass parking lot. read more

When Whole Foods is next door, just laying in wait to take thirty bucks from me just from buying some fruit and a container of smoked salmon, I really WANT to be able to do all my shopping at Vitamin Cottage. But alas, it cannot be so. VC's produce has been gross every. single. time I've visited. I'm sure that it's natural and organic and local and whatever, but that doesn't make a bit of difference to me if it doesn't at least look edible. Seriously, every apple I've had has been mushy, every orange dry, every plum mealy. So I've given up on the produce. As for everything else - if you compare prices with Whole Foods, you'll nearly always come out better at VC (with some notable exceptions, mostly stuff in the freezer aisle). I'll get my tea here, my noodles, my potato chips (most snacks, actually), my chocolate, my juice, my soup, my cereal. The employees are really friendly and it's not their fault that the other customers tend to be totally insane. I was once in line behind a woman who, for literally 20 minutes, advised a customer service rep about business school. She did not notice that there was a line behind her, or, in fact, that there was anyone else in the store. I've also been yelled at (by a customer who had ample room to walk around me) for standing in the aisle comparing teas. But if none of this happens to you, it's a great place to just run in, grab your staples, and run out, for less money than Whole Foods and less bother than Whole Foods. read more

Vibe: Grungy, hippy commune-y The impression round the water cooler seems to be that the VC is a cheaper alternative to Whole Foods. This is not true. Go here for the low-cost organic veggies. Almost always significantly cheaper than their next door neighbor Whole Foods. Other scattered items are cheaper - like the Good Belly. Many items here, including their vitamins, are actually more expensive than Whole Foods. This might have to do with Whole Foods having the luxury of having their own brand which is high quality and almost always cheaper than the others. Basically, when I have the time, I stop at both stores to get the best prices. When I don't, I generally just stop at Whole Foods since it's hard for me to complete all my shopping at Vitamin Cottage (high priced milk, terrible bread, small selection). Also, bring your own bag. I don't mind the boxes they put my stuff in when I don't bring a bag, but they do give you the You Inconsiderate Selfish Earth Inhabitant look while packing up your stuff. read more

While parking is a bit treacherous, the quality, selection and price of organic produce is unbeatable by any other store in Boulder. This alone, makes me stop and shop. I am a grocery store ho - I go to all the stores for their respective deal items. Each store has something cheaper than the others, believe me, I have studied this;) I go to VC for organic produce, seeds, nuts, some supplements and kombucha - and a few raw snacks I can't find anywhere else. Love this place. Decent prices. But don't bother signing up for their membership program. It's pretty ridiculous. Purchase something of some amount between certain dates (3 days), and later date, on only one or two days, you can redeem a small coupon after you clicked redeem coupon well in advance and have proven your purchase between the prior 3 days or so. Pretty much you have to schedule your life around the coupons if you ever plan on redeeming any of them. So yes, shop here, but you might as well be signing up to a spam email account with the membership "benefits" they offer ;). read more

But, I do most of my shopping at Vitamin Cottage because I can get the same items much cheaper (except they don't really have prepared foods so I go to WF for that). Vitamin Cottage gets one star for offering all organic produce. And bulk coffee and spices are a good deal. But the rest of the store is as expensive or more than Whole Foods. They offer the same discounts as all the other natural foods retailers in town because the vendors give them all the same promotional discount. Worst of all is the service and dirty store itself. Crowded, dirty, boxes all around, broken lighting in the cooler (for over a year), dingy lighting, and surly cashiers. That people shop here at all is surprising. Prices for natural and organic packaged good products at Whole Foods are competitive, meat and seafood quality is much better. Lucky's Market has better produce -- and local too! Costco has lower priced organic and natural meats. Vitamin Cottage is a dumpy old store with uncompetitive pricing and lousy service. read more

My favorite grocery store in Boulder. I feel like they have some of the best prices on natural & organic foods. It's a smaller store and most of the staff is very friendly but can be hit or miss with the younger workers. The place reminds me of an organic grocery store I worked at in college and I like the atmosphere here. I come here for most of my dairy and specialty items. read more
