We went in hungry and besides our reg groceries we splurged on a See's candy box "Nuts and Chews". When I got to the car I realized the 11 oz box was $30 !! That is ridiculous - a 1 lb (16oz) box in the See's store is about the same price $32. I kinda like this store as it is big and has nice selections But Check Your Prices Before Checkout !! read more

When I am in Auburn, this is where I like to shop for groceries. The company has always done their best in customer service here and I appreciate everyone that worked during our pandemic just for us to keep shopping. On the outside, it has a huge parking lot shared with many other businesses, fast food, Ross, and much more. There is always someone with a sign in need of money as you enter & leave the parking lot. That can be a little discouraging, but I know they need money, too.. it does get overwhelming that it's every trip. Before you enter, Safeway has signs in front of their store that you need to mask up before entering. As you enter the air conditioner store, their fresh cut flowers are what catches my eyes. I always look to see if there is something I can't live without. The plants are pretty, and sometimes, I think they charge too much. I feel like they throw a bow on something and charge an extra $20‐$30 over what the plants are actually worth. Some aren't in the best condition, but still sold at an outrageous price. Just ahead, you can see the produce dept. They have big signs making sure you know what's on sale. I like going for the fruits for my daily smoothie. When shopping produce, I've noticed they do not always have the freshest ingredients. For instance, I have had to ask if they have fresh green beans bc what they had on display was very limp and unappealing. However, I love that they have lots to choose from. Their meat department is friendly. Compared to other Safeway's, when they make their poki, they add chopped white onion where I have seen other store's don't take that extra step. It makes a huge difference and is necessary. Their usually stocked really well and sometimes have 30-50 off stickers on meat & seafood the day before it expires. The display case holds most of the salmon from what I've noticed. Yesterday, the bakery had a $5 Friday deal on a single layer Carrot cake. Theirs is so delicious! They have beautiful cakes in their display case being made sometimes, daily. If you have a request on a cake, pie, large order for donuts, or crossiants be sure to call at least the day before to order it. They can usually accommodate you. Their Deli has always looked impeccable. There is a hot case available for a quick lunch, the quickness depends how busy the store is, so don't judge them if it's a crazy holiday. They can slice your Deli meat fresh, your cheese can be fresh. They offer cold pasta & potato salads. The sushi looks beautiful! For store sushi, theirs is great! I love their Wasabi. It's hotter than restaurants. There will sometimes be a $5 Friday deal on sushi and that's when I like to get a few. I have tried their poki bowls and they are delicious! I just wish there was more protein and yes, I would be willing to pay more. Maybe I can look into ordering ahead. I'll let you know... The rest of the store is pretty organized. Safeway has their brand, 'Safeway select', which I have noticed over the years is just as good or better than top brands. I enjoy shopping here and enjoy the deals I get here vs an over priced Bel Air. Although masks are required, not everyone complies. With all the craziness around, you never know how someone will react these days when approached to please put one on. As much as I know Safeway would like to everyone to comply, I can too many bad scenarios arising from asking someone to put one on. They do try their hardest with this. I just returned from spending my afternoon at Safeway in Auburn all to return a bag of flower, buy a bag of flower & pickup my wife's rx. NO ONE was working at customer service & 2 different people paged for a rep. I was then directed to return it at the register! At the register, I waited in line for 20 minutes because they had no help at the register. When it was my turn, the clerk didn't know what to do & wanted me to go to a different line so I told him to get me the manager. He decided it was better to ask another cashier how to deal with it and still he had trouble, another 5-10 minutes. Then I got to wait in line for the pharmacy. Two people in front of me & another 20 minutes to be told, please wait, we have one more being worked on. So: * Long slow lines at registers *Cashiers who don't know what they are doing *No customer service *No one to ask for help when you can't find something. *In 5 years, I've not seen the same cashier at the pharmacy meaning the cashiers are usually inexperienced at the pharmacy. Compare this to Walmart or Nugget where I shopped earlier in the day: *Friendly cashiers at both store who were ready when I was *Employee at Nugget who walked through the store trying to help me find something *Multiple employees in both stores asking me if I need anything I'd rather pay more money than waste my time at this or any other Safeway store. Obviously, we all need food and price comes into factor when selecting where to buy our food. However, today's experience was actually laughable! There were a lot of employees today, most just standing around chatting. I went to the check-out line and the woman seemed annoyed because she had to get off her phone, but she did resume to finish her text message before obliging me. She packed one bag if groceries while I unloaded, but, I typically help pack to make things quicker. I am happy I did because she put my mushrooms at the bottom of a very heavy bag with a large bottle of creamer and other various heavy fruits and veggies. The checker was very happy because that allowed her to get back to her text conversation while she waited for me to finish and pay. The woman behind me even took a second glance. I just shrugged. As I was walking out I was paying attention to just how many employees were standing around doing nothing. I also noticed I was not the only one packing my groceries. One woman even asked a girl to move so she could get by to bag her items into a bag. This employee didn't even flinch. I made it all the way to my car and just laughed. I finally decided to return and locate a manager. I stood at the "customer service" counter for 5 minutes. 2 employees walked right by me and neither one asled if I needed anything. Avoid the fast check cashier who wears a name tag that says "Michael B." As soon as he started ringing up my items I told him I was getting $60 on my card and that I would give him $40 cash for a hundred bill, and asked if he had a hundred dollar bill. When I completed the transaction he gave me $40 cash. I repeated that I wanted a hundred dollar bill and he said he did not understand me in a condescending manner. The employee who bagged my purchase then last kindly offered to help me on another register. read more

Wanted to specifically mention Connie in the pickup order department. Not only has she gone above and beyond in the customer service aspect for me on more than one occasion, she always has such uplifting and kind words to offer. Something she doesn't have to do nor is expected and she has absolutely warmed my heart more than once with her kind and caring words. Talk about an exemplary employee and just all around super human. I sure hope she is recognized for her amazing customer service. Do not go here there are better stores in the area. All of the food is nothing special but marked up compared to the same items in similar stores and often out of stock. I used to be an instacart shopper in this area and was confused why people still frequented this place as it was just more expensive than other stores. Bel-Air and Raleys are better options, even target and save mart I prefer. I would say the only good thing is the specialty/exotic fruits but even those are often rotten. read more

Ive been shopping at Safeway for years now. The other night I went in to shop some sales: frozen veggies and ice cream. As I was self checking the system errored .. on what I did not know. So clerk came over to reset whatever. I asked what I did wrong and basically got no response. So I continue and had one last ice cream to ring up and system errored again. Same clerk came up and started to go thru the screen. At this point I still had one item to ring. So she's going thru the screens and me being a sofrware eng was trying to figure out what was wrong. At this point she barks at me " you need to leave me alone.". I was floored yet kept my quiet. Next thing I see her re-ringing about 3 possibly 4 items. I said I don't understand why she's doing this at which she replied "Don't worry I fixed it'. So now I am a bit worried as self check is just that my processing my items. She gets done and I asked again why she rang up so many when only 1 was missing. Here reply was its correct now "do you want me to get a manager:?" I said do I need one? So it was rang up and I started reviewing my receipt which was incorrect. See a few items were multiples so receipt would read: 3@price but she saw each as a single item. SO my bill was huge. Well the manager came over asking what was going on and I said I don't have a clue but this receipt is way over for my purchase. At which being frustrated I stated this is s diputand lets fix it. Manager a short squat lady who had more of a waddle than a walk starts telling me I need to quit causing problems in a yell type voice. I reminded both of them that they were there solely to assist customers which I was one. At that Point I could see this was not going to get resolved so I said I don't want anything and please refund my monies. Manager asked do you want it back on your card or cash? I said cash as ALL I wanted at this point was to get out of there. She barks again "You must get refund back on your card only." I am like you offered and now since I ve been dealing w/ the worst Customer Service I have ever encountered just refund my monies and both receipts please. I will NEVER back as since BelAir is a block farther not an issue. BTW Went to belair and everything was cheaper anyways. Being I have done LP I realized that they were accusing me of stealing. I am glad they get enough customers that they can treat the consistent shoppers like crud. read more

Every time I try to order for delivery, it tells me to call the 855 number. This is been going on for weeks. What the hell is happening?

This is a Horrible company and they don't deserve one star. The customer service is terrible. Cashier and employees are always complaining about how the management and workload is horrible. You hear the employees cussing about how much they hate their job and hate the Store manager. My mother bought a cake here and it was terrible and it looked like crap. She tried to speak to management about it. They would not even speak to her about this issue. Also Sue from the bakery department was taking photos of my mother and her fiance when they got the cake. Being a former employee of this particular location I will say in my entire working career, I have never worked for such a horrible unprofessional company in my life. I was forced to work Nineteen hour days and force to do things outside my job title and would only have 3 to 4 hours inbetween each of my shifts. I was harassed and bullied daily. I would bring it to management's (alejandro's) attention they would laughed in my face, and never dealt with any of the harassment or bullying I was personally experiencing. I was getting harassed by management and employees on my 1 year wedding anniversary/vacation and when I left for my mothers wedding by call and text. It got so bad I was falsely accused of a very heinous crime that has destroyed me. My life, my character, my family's life, my children etc. Don't support this horrible company. They need to be out of Auburn. read more

Overall, I like this Safeway and I've never had issues. Until today. I have a sinus infection and woke up miserable without any soft tissues. Not feeling well, I waited about 20 minutes for Safeway to open at 5am. While I waited for them to open, one of the staff asked me if I needed help as they were going in to start their shift. I responded I was just waiting for the store to open. Once inside, I made a dash for the bathroom. As said, not feeling well but really wanted soft tissues. Got my box of tissues and the only cashier was the same woman who asked me if I needed help outside. In a snarky, self absorbed tone she said you waited all that time outside for a box of tissues? In my froggy sick voice I told her I have a sinus infection and wanted soft tissues. My head was pounding so hard I couldn't get the right change to give her. What business is it of hers if I wait outside for that? I'm a paying customer and without paying customers she'd be out of work. The nice thing would have been to keep her thoughts to herself. Friday, the deli department offered an 8 piece fried chicken special for $5. After travelling down there at 4:30 pm, I was informed they "sold out" of chicken. So Monday, they were offering 15 chicken wings for $6. After my experience on Friday, I called the deli at 4:30 pm only to be told they "sold out" of chicken wings. Both of these instances were at 4:30 pm, before dinner. What the hell is going on with this store? read more

Bakery- They are amazing!!!! A huge thank you to Sue and Bobby who pulled off the most beautiful Rose themed 3 tiered cake and coordinated cupcakes for a bridal brunch that I had specified pretty difficult requests of ombré Roses on the sides and one large on the top and they did it beautifully and it tasted sooooo good !!! A few weeks before they nailed my husbands favorite tres leche cake and even suggested a darling fishing theme kit they decorated it with which my husband totally loved!!! They are awesome read more

This Safeway is clean, well kept, and usually has everything well stocked. The staff are not always knowledgeable or helpful in finding things, but sometimes they are. Only about twice has something I came for been out of stock (red onions and saltine salted crackers) but overall the store is great. The isles are small though and I do have a hard time fitting through when it's busy. I'll often leave my cart at the end of the isle and grab the item and come back to it. It gets really busy on $5 Fridays. It's my least favorite time to shop. Some of the people in the sushi bar don't speak English, but the sushi is usually good. It's just difficult to ask for anything custom. Overall, a great grocery store though. read more

This for the deli department... We procrastinated our Easter dinner shopping. So who was out trying to find a ham Easter afternoon? That would be us! After searching around the meat and deli section, a nice man in the deli department greeted us and asked if he could help us find anything. After explaining that we were searching for a ham, he began to give us the unfortunate news that they were sold out. Go figure! After seeing how disappointed I was not to get our ham, he offered his own that he had saved in the back. It was an extra he said. Regardless, Peter in the deli department, you saved Easter! Wonder why THIS SAFEWAY IS THE LOWEST ED RATED IN THE COUNTRY? I did, so I thought I would check it out... Maybe it is something in the air? It started with my personal, kind, hello to the guy pushing the Pepsi cart. He was sweating and having a most difficult time. I said, "You know, they have machines to push the shopping carts in the parking lot, you would think that since your cart is heavier, they would have a small electric motor to assist you?" I received the, "I wish you were dead glare in return" (Just trying to be nice brother). Then after being given the wrong directions for items by 2 different employees. I decided I had enough, it was time to go... Then, Of course the cashier had to explain life to me and the importance of leaving the heavy items in my cart. I explained that I am disabled, I did not want to put the items on the belt but, I did so for them, to make their job easier. She then DEMANDED that I remove the heavy items from the belt and put them back into my cart. NEW NAME? Yes, of course... Not Safeway but ...STAYAWAY. Yes, that was our last visit! read more

I sometimes, well most of the time, loathe going to this Safeway. My particular distaste for this Safeway is not reflective of how I feel about other Safeway locations. The Auburn location is just really the plankton of the area Safeways. First grievance: the parking lot is ridiculous. For some reason it seems as if every person with zero sense of direction/zero sense of urgency gravitates to this Safeway. There are cars all over the place and people just walking right into the stream of traffic, without looking, as if they believe they are invincible. My second grievance is with the bakery department. Every Friday my work hosts a company wide lunch, where we typically make some form of sandwiches. The bread in the bakery section of Safeway is delicious, so when possible, we opt for the Safeway bread rolls. One problem: there is hardly ever any bread ready. The bakery department tells you that it will be done in a half hour, so you come back. Low and behold... no bread. It's a complete cluster. Third grievance is the inventory in the produce department. By 4:30 p.m. everything has been pillaged. All that is left are the bananas that have already browned and apples that are bruised and cut. They are out of certain bagged items, such as shredded carrots, all the time. I would figure that if the inventory is constantly low or out that they would get hip to the fact that they probably need to order a larger quantity. My fourth grievance is the checkout area. This store is literally slammed... 24/7, that being said, Safeway needs to hire more checkers. There are 3 lanes or less open, not including the self checkout. On top of not having enough checkers, the ones that do currently work here are constantly talking to one another, complaining about break times, etc. Further, when you have a line of 8 people waiting to get checked out, there is no reason that you need to engage in an in depth conversation that causes them to check people out even slower. I find that whenever I leave the Auburn Safeway, I have the thirst for an adult beverage. I can only assume that it is a direct correlation with the irritation and annoyance that hovers over me after a shopping trip at this location. read more

I do not know what is happening at the Safeway store at Bell & Hwy. 49 in Auburn. Every time I shop the store has fallen into a further state of sloppiness. It does not seem to matter what time of day, the isles are now all crowded with cheap display that choke the isles down so 2 shopping carts can't pass. There is piles of merchandise stacked everywhere and it is all just cheap junk. It reminds me of a 3rd world market. The produce has gone from bad to worse- it looks like it has been thrown on the floor and then put on the shelf. I now see a lot of the regular employees have quit and gone to work at BriarPatch. I can't say I blame them- Briar Patch is a great market and where I have been shopping increasingly more since Safeway has dropped to bargain-basement class. Safeway- Get rid of the manager at Bell/Hwy. 49 and bring in someone who knows how to manage a store for God's sake. PLEASE! read more

Do not use their online pick up app what so ever. Apparently your "pick up time" you choose will actually be the time that the employees start your shopping. And no I'm not going based off of one experience. I have used this 4 times and each time I'm told the same thing "we are short today." I am normally very understanding of this issue considering I have had to deal with it myself but today was unacceptable. I put my order in yesterday at 11:45am to pick up my order at 7pm TODAY. That's over 12 hours that they would have had my order in their system. I get here at 6:59pm the day of my pick up and am told that since they are short my order is JUST NOW getting worked on. I was given the options to wait 15 mins (which actually turned into 30) or come back another day. I work 10 hour days. All I wanted to do was to pick up my groceries conveniently after work, I pre planned and gave way too much notice and my order could still not be ready on time. If they are THAT short on staffing then this service should not be offered at this location. I am calling out management at this point. Hire more employees or discontinue the service. Absolutely ridiculous. read more
