I have been a satisfied Safeguard 'clienT' for nearly 8 years at Lakeview location N Clybourn Avenue . with only one exception (flooding not caused by them but lack of city gutters maintenance during storm). in that instance m, they reached out immediately w/notification and assistance remedying any serious damage/loss due to water encroachment in unit. I admit I would be happier w/o the rental increases of last few years; however, they were very considerate of financial hardship durung COVID. Most recently, my storage needs have changed and in the process it's been a true blessing to have Mario facilitate making what has been a stressful situation as stress free as possible. I went to the 95th St. location after working a full day. Despite already being tired when I got there, I left the facility quite pleased with my experience. I closed one unit, and enlarged another one. Both actions were seamless. I started with Christopher on rhe phone. I interacted with Vanessa Banks onsite. DO NOT USE THIS FACILITY. They raise the price every six months basically forcing you to move your stuff early or pay more, even while new customers pay less. The worst part is after moving all of my stuff into my new apartment everything smells like urine. It's disgusting and I can't find any information about the insurance online. If I could give them 0 starts , I would! After paying for years of storage , I recently discovered that my unit was infested with mice/rats . There were droppings everywhere! Inside the boxes , on top of boxes , all over the floor. My Christmas tree and many other valuable items were destroyed. I have an expensive custom made Ethan Allen desk that is ruined All of my Christmas decorations are ruined ! I threw the decorations and tree away ! I did not store food or anything like that in my unit. The company brushed off the complaint and told me to contact my renters insurance policy. That resolution is unacceptable! At a minimum , I'd expect them to refund what I've paid over the years . Do not store your items at this facility ! read more

I've been a customer of this location for the past seven years. In the past five years, my rent has gone up 65%. The conditions of the building have also deteriorated, including frequent urine in the elevator, unusable carts, and delivery doors that often won't open (it is also very hard to get in and out). I called supervisor Mike today to discuss my options because I don't want the hassle of moving my three units out and he was completely unhelpful. This company does not care about its customers. There are so many other good options nearby, stay away from this one. read more

We are in the process of moving back to Chicago, and need a storage unit for our extra furnishings and boxes. In the past, we have rented from the place across the street, but thought I would check out Safeguard this time around. Wow was I thoroughly impressed! The first thing I noticed was how clean and well lit Safeguard is. There was absolutely NO smell of any sort (the other place we rented from was musty and dusty). I think it is probably in part due to the concrete flooring (versus wood flooring at the other place). The temperature is controlled (it was nice and cool when I visited over the weekend). I worked with Mike to set up our lease. Mike was super friendly and helpful in my search. We looked at two potential storage lockers, and ended up getting the larger of the two. The prices are comparable between the two places, so the deciding factor was cleanliness (as are going to be storing extra clothing). There are three loading bays off of 14th Street, which can be accessed via your electronic key fob. The key fob also gives you access to your storage unit's floor, and only your floor. Security is a priority here. We got one of their locks, as that was recommended. They offer additional insurance; however, look into your home owner's policy. Most likely your existing insurance will cover your belongings in storage so you don't need the extra insurance. read more

Wasn't a customer, I live next door. These people have had a large garbage container on 14th street for 40 days straight which has caused havoc for traffic. I spoke with a worker this afternoon whose words and facial expressions could not have cared less. They are horrible neighbors. If you are looking for storage and live in the area, go across the street. Too many options to deal with these people. read more

To anyone looking to compare rates for self storage, I would not recommend that you contact this facility. I did so over the phone and to be fair, while the customer service agent was polite, I had the following problems here: 1. You cannot get any pricing without first providing your contact info, including your phone number. 2. Even though I stated that I DID NOT want to provide my telephone number, nor did I want it in any company database or on any list, the agent grabbed it (deviously) from their Caller ID feature, and noted it anyway, because another person called me within 5 minutes of hanging up to ask if I had any additional questions! As you can imagine I was quite upset, and this is a terrible invasion of privacy. Now, again in all fairness the customer service here was responsive. I voiced my complaints to their corporate offices and got a call back within 15 minutes addressing the underpinnings. Still, it was not quite right in my mind but judge for yourself. This place rocks!! Super easy access and smooth process all around. Best accessibility options in the city, especially if you live in the loop because it's so close to downtown. Super good customer service too which you never expect from a service of this kind. This place is always clean, visibly and to the smell. The people that work here are very nice and make sure you understand everything involved with have storage here. Also, upon closing out my account, I couldn't remove the combination lock myself, and one of the associates removed it for me. Love them! Will use them again if needed. read more

We considered several storage places in the area and are happy with our choice. This is the best value -- it is very clean, dry, secure -- and it is easy to access our stuff thanks to 3 pull-in garage bays. It is well run and Serafin was extremely helpful. I highly recommend the place. read more

I have had a unit at this facility for 7 years and have had the rates increased on me every year at 9% each year. The management that was in place when I first started here, Bob and Brian, were fantastic. Since then they have brought in some schmucks to run the place and it has gone to crap. Inevitably something is ALWAYS broken (ie elevators or garage doors). The only positive change that I can give them credit for is they now have reasonable access hours. I just got my next letter to notify me of yet another increase in rate and will be moving to another facility this month. I would stay away from here. They try to get you in the door and then jack up the rent. Peace out safeguard you suck. read more

A friend referred me to this place- The thought went through my head that he might actually hate me. But after discussing this with him, apparently it used to be a lot better and has recently just gone way down to the shitter. This is the worst storage space in the history of storage spaces (ok I don't know the f*ing history of storage spaces but I'm right dammit). First of all, the first day I rented from this place, someone parked behind me and I was blocked in (there's an area with three garage spots). I should have destroyed my contract right away but unfortunately didn't. So there is the possibility of parking on the side street to bypass this problem except that the last time I was there, literally, a person was parked there and their car got broken into. The driver side window got destroyed and their laptop was stolen (I must be naive but didn't think this was a particularly bad area? then again, who leaves their laptop on the front seat. Regardless.. Then there's the lovely carts. The screeching noise first thing in the morning makes me want to rip out my hair piece by piece. They aren't even functional really! and that noise!! So when I complained about this (there were only two in the 'garage' , both basically non functioning, the guy at the desk (don't get me wrong, the people who work there are super nice, that's why I gave one star-), explained to me that they keep the 'nice ones' inside, since they get stolen on a regular basis. Keep in mind , I can't park my car close to where the nice cart is since it will get broken into. My last point of utter frustration for this place is the fact that there is one elevator by the garage. The past two times I've been here, I've been stuck on the 6th floor due to movers holding up the one elevator there is, leaving me to take the dysfunctional terrible horrifying noisy cart all the way around to the other elevator, which leads me out to the front where I have to go thru two separate doors that the cart doesn't really fit in (which don't automatically open or close), where people get mugged, all the way around to the garage! Oh, and if you're ever in a hurry, don't even think about it. This place is a nightmare. Don't do it. Shit, it's not even cheap!!! read more

I loved this place for two years. The manager when I started was great, the security is amazing, and it's a good price for convenience. I had some problems paying early on because the property doesn't accept cash or debit or something, I can't remember. All that changed when the manager was promoted and the current manager began working. For months, I wasn't there and, when I was there, he ignored me. One day I used the restroom on the premises (something which is rarely clean, not open after hours, and doesn't have hot water), he explained the "washroom is only to be used for washroom purposes." He accused me of washing my clothes in "his" sink, and that five-ten minutes in the "washroom" was excessive. I complained to corporate, which spawned months of leering, eye rolling, jeering, basically harassment. I went through more financial hardship and tried to explain that the bill would be paid, but the manager hung the phone up on me. I also became ill, and the harassment was only joined by outside friends of his jeering at me as I walked past. More calls to corporate to complain, and I have become fed up, but so has the manager, as he evicted me and did not give a reason. There are two other places near Safeguard, and you need to choose one of those before Safeguard. read more

Rent increases 12% a year I have had my stuff in this place for 7 years and each year they try and increase the rate excessively. Last year they decreased the increase to 5% from 12% after I threatened to move out. My opinion is that once a rent is set that the yearly adjustments should be reasonable because they know that moving out is a major inconvenience to the customer. read more

Just left Safeguard self storage and are now the proud owners of a 7.5 x 10 foot storage locker. We were impressed by the clean facility and friendly, inviting service. Being that it was our first experience in renting a storage unit, Rick was accommodating and thorough in his explanation and answered our questions patiently. The facility is a little further (south of the Chicago loop) than we wanted to drive, but the savings in the monthly fee was worth it. read more

NIGHTMARE!! Couldve bern killed and days after incident havent even been contacted by the company at all!!!!! Tjis past sunday morning i went to my storage unit that i rent in Chicago IL, at 5026 N. Sheridan rd. and I have haf issues before with the staff being rude and unavailavle . But this day, i was in my unit cleaning a d organizing as i was planning on moving out i the next few days due to a break in earlier in the month amd the staff wete so grossly unhelpful and rude that i was completely convinced that the entire company was out to make money ay any cost and that was including ignoring all forms of respect for their customers and their belongings. I was listening to music on my cell ohone with my earbuds in with my door open to my unit and the lock to it in my front pocket to avoid any acvidental locking of the unit while k was inside getting ready to move my belingings. when working my phone died and mt music stopped so i removed my ear buds and moved towards my door which i than noyiced was closed. I attempted to open tbe door for a few minutes before realizing that thete was a yellow lock in mu unit i coukd see fromthe inside of my now temporary prison. Not to drag this out, but s for yhe next seven or so hours i sat in tbe pitch black svreaming for help and bamging on the doors and walls with no aid ever arriving. I spent hours feeling around and serching for anything to solve tjis issue , hoping tbat i coumd get out soon. During tbis yime having several panic atracks, missing work and making a dramatic frenzy with all of my household unaware of my being at the unit and unable to find me worried that sonetji g terrible had happened. And tbeh were correct. aftef a few more hours , although feeling lime days, i found a selfie syick in o e of my packed containers and spent a long wjile trying to use this cjeap metal to pry and bang my way out of tbis well built box, riping off the alarm on the doir lock hoping to set off. and it never did ho off. until finally i tbe dark i fi d a box of toold and o use my selfir stick and a large screwdri er i found yo remone screws arou d the door amd nuts around the lock to get ebough of the doir open to bend tbe doirs latch bavk far enough yo force my door open and finally out to freedom. With cuts and svrapes on my arms and hands i go clean up in tbe bathrpom and than find an out let to plug in my phone and call my father to explain the ordeal and ask for help. I emailed the manager of the storage that next morning seeing as i didnt get home till well after midnight and bei g held captive im tbe dars all day and havimg to break free i was considerable shaken and hungry and needec to sleep. This was exactly fivr days ago and since than i have received not a call or email or anything reguarding my day of hell imprisoned inmy unit by the mamager of the facility. No apology not even a call to ask if i was ok. i sent an incident report to the.manger i wrote out wiyjout them even requesting it or suggesying i should . And now five days an entire work week later, not one word. Nothing. Now, a company with the slogan they have... and their description of service- High-quality, modern, well-designed buildings with plentiful customer amenities, that's standard stuff at Safeguard. But, superior facilities alone don't make customers completely satisfied. That's why personal, friendly customer service has been, and continues to be, a hallmark of the company. This commitment to unmatched service distinguishes Safeguard from other storage companies. --- Where is this they describe? and for licking me into my unit against my will? If that doesnt warrant a phone call than what does??? Altbough i did get an email, stating that my bill for the month is due today. INCREDIBLE! There are plenty of storage spaces available. If tjis is what you are looking for when you spend your moneuy. than you are in tbe right spot. Me on the other hand .... Safeguard Self Storage. Since you have no time to call or write to make sure your actions didnt harm or endager my life ... thank you for that. And im really saddened that i was only wanted by your company for my hard earned money ans never to provide a quality service. Horrible service. I've been a renter for eight years, and I have finally had it. Management is apathetic at best. I can deal with the fact that they increase rent year after year (even to those of us who with cc on file and who have never missed or had a late payment), but I can no longer take the horrible service.
