Don't just drive by, stop and eat! This place is unassuming from the outside, but feels like home inside. I ordered the Beef Pad Thai, and it didn't take long to cook at all. SAENG brings the HEAT! I love this place. One of the few restaurants I can rely on to not make my so requested dish "candy ass" hot. SAENG is growing her own ghost peppers! That should be a sign that this place is not to be trifled with if you do not enjoy spicy food on some level. The place itself looks it would blend in flawlessly with a trailer park in West Virginia.. however do not let this camouflage fool you. Inside this gruff exterior resides the perfect alchemical blend of Thai flavor and fire that awaits your stupid mouth. At the extra hot level I must pause halfway through the dish to recover before fiercely shoveling the rest of the masterpiece in my face. I dig that when you walk in, you can look right into Saeng's ghetto kitchen and witness her magicking up the next dish. I also dig that when I request something special she gets mad and grumpily yells at the cashier... this amuses me greatly. As for recommendations, my list would include: jalapeno lumpio, pad Thai, panang curry, ginger curry, and the green curry are my favorites. This is one restaurant you cannot judge by its cover... or lack thereof. The building is located off Hwy 60/84 in pretty much the middle of nowhere. Unless you've read previous reviews or been tipped, you probably would not want to stop. But don't let the dismal exterior deter you. The Thai food is the best that you will find around. In fact, it's not just good per Clovis standards, but the food could compete with some Thai joints that I've been to in Seattle. Keep in mind, however, that mild isn't in Saeng's vocabulary. If you order hot, your mouth better be prepared for fire. If you order mild, fire is still coming your way. The service was decent. It took us a while for our food to come out and we were the only ones in the place, but I wasn't in a hurry so I didn't mind. This place seems to be a staple for those at Cannon AFB. Don't let the modest exterior fool you, this place is good. We came with our 4 year old and just ordered Thai staples: Pad Thai and Chicken Fried Rice. We were aptly warned that the "mild" is an 8/10 in spicy. We took her word for it, and had mild for the noodles and "no spice" for the rice. The portions were GINORMOUS. It came out piping hot and fresh. The rice was so good my 4 year old ate it happily. The pad Thai was different, but there was a magical poached egg under the noodles, soaked in sauce, that was the best surprise. The mild was plenty spicy and delicious. I really wish I knew that pork was the meat of choice for the house noodle soup special. I've always had beef and beef meatball as protein of choice from other restaurants. AND at Saeng's for the last 3 years, up until the other day. Grant it, the last time I had been here up until yesterday, was in November of 2011. Good broth, that's why I come back. And for those saying it's dirty, poor decor, etc... Clovis is on the East of NM, 10 minutes from the Texas border, and a very small town. Why change what still sells? This place is a hidden gem. My friend and I stopped here on a road trip on our way to the Grand Canyon and it was the best stop we could have made. It doesn't look like much from the outside and the interior is not exactly pretty, but it's an extremely authentic Thai feeling, complete with Thai karaoke on the TV at the front, with the owner singing happily along. You're basically in their house being treated to a homecooked meal. And the portions are magnificent! If you order curry, it will take about 45 minutes because they cook it from scratch and it takes time to reduce the coconut milk -- but it's so freaking good when it's done. If you're concerned, call them up in advance to let them start before you get there. Bonus points for the server, who if you chat to him, tells you he's Japanese and raised in Tokyo but also spent some time in Germany. Lots of neat cultural exchange in a very unlikely setting! I went here with coworker. He has the buffet version which has varieties from beef broccoli to chicken curry and soup. I had the daily special for Thursday, Spicy chicken over rice and a egg roll. I asked for medium spicy and she delivered. The customer service is pretty fast because I got my food less than 5 minutes, or maybe I got there at the right time. I've had a lot of emotions when eating out, but never one of pure anger! Traveling up for a ski trip we stayed in Clovis and thought we'd treat ourselves to Thai. We ignored the negative reviews and hoped for the best. After a 15 minute drive we picked up our to go order and drove back to the hotel. Our 5 and 8 year old were excited about their pad Thai. My husband told me he had to sign a waiver for the spice level he requested, fair enough it's his taste buds and he loves spicy. All three dishes turned out to be "burn off your tastebuds, face numbingly spicy". Dripping with oil that probably isn't fit for human consumption! So after our 15 minute drive out of town, $40 for three dishes, no one was able to eat. I can't even imagine if my kids had tried their dish!!! Shame on you!! read more
