The ambiance was candlelit and romantic with red and pink balloons everywhere. So cute! I'm not sure what the restaurant looks like on a regular night, but I was feelin' the Valentine's Day vibes. We had a LivingSocial deal - good for 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, and 1 dessert. We got a special appetizer of the night - the appetizer sampler consisting of papa rellena (fried mashed potato stuffed with chopped steak and egg served with salsa criolla), huancaina (crisp yuca topped with huancaina sauce made from cheese, yellow pepper, and Peruvian spices), and coconut shrimp. Manny and I thought the coconut shrimp was really tasty and I loved the papa rellena, but we both thought the huancaina was okay. It lacked flavor. We both got the churrasco (another special of the night; not on the menu) - mine was cooked medium, his was medium rare. I liked my steak and plantains, but he thought his entrée was nothing special and we both didn't like the white rice and pinto beans that came with our meal. Tres leches was our dessert of choice, and that obviously didn't disappoint. Tres leches NEVER disappoints! The service was great though! Our server was so sweet and someone was always around to refill our water glasses without having to ask. Next time, we'll come back and try what they're known for - their ceviche! read more

Went for dinner on a Thursday night to catch up with some girlfriends. Had a reservation but did not need one. Noise level was good to talk. It is on the second floor. Not sure if there is an elevator in the back. It is like walking into someone's house...very cute and charming. We brought a bottle of sangria and they mix it for you with passion fruit mix. It was delicious! The empanada special that we shared was so amazingly good, I could have ordered more for my entree. I got the Lopa Saltado stir fry with chicken. Very good, but I wish it was offered with shrimp. The chicken was a little dry but swimming in sauce so still tasty. Enough to take home a doggy bag. My friends ordered the garlic shrimp which they loved. The desserts sounded yummy but we were way too full. Very attentive waiter and super nice. The plantains that came with the dish was the best part of the meal. Fried rice was not good but the one person that liked their dinner ordered a skirt steak so stick with the steak. When we left the fabulous town of Caldwell gave two of us a parking tickets as they have little parking available and apparently a curfew on parking so we racked up almost 100 dollar parking fees. I met friends here a week ago and we started with a apps sampler platter of yucca huacina, coconut shrimp and papa rellena. My friends loved it and she really fell hard for the papa so we let her have the whole thing - lol- so much so we had to relegate ourselves to the toasted hominy- can this come by the pound cause like um yum. It was recommended to have the chicken soup and so our friend did in fact indulge much to his incredible delight - been a week still talking about it For entree the boys had the steak empanzinado pobre style which is two eggs over it - I mean can you bring more food? An entire steak over a platter of rice, French fries, toast and two eggs on top ? We checked this place out when we discovered they have an extensive vegan menu. As a Peruvian who has been vegan since 2001 this was a huge treat. Everything was so good and on point, but the standouts for me were the sweet potato ceviche (A+ leche de tigre) and the causa (which wasn't on the menu, but our server told us they have vegan mayo so it can be made vegan!). I've been searching and searching and searching. Tried multiple restaurants looking for that Peruvian flavor I knew was out there and could not find. To my surprise it was hiding at Sabor Peru. I've tried high-end and low end Peruvian restaurants so I've had a little background in what to expect and I'm super skeptical about trying places with high reviews or even YouTube reviews since they end up being insanely overrated and underwhelming. From start to finish the dish hits every mark I was looking for. I always try to play it safe and order a "Chaufa Especial" I honestly didn't know how special this chaufa was going to be. The visuals made my animal instincts kick in my mouth started salivating, pupils dilated, and my stomach let out a deep growl. The aroma made my heart start racing, my body creeping towards the plated beauty before me, and made my legs slightly weaker. The taste......it's the one I've been searching for this entire time.....I've finally found it....I've reached my destination. I had the pleasure of experiencing this amazing Peruvian cuisine with my fraternity brother. We ordered the sampler (2 empanadas made with ACTUAL small steak chunks marinaded to excellence, papa rellena, coconut crusted fried shrimp), Chaufa Mixta (shrimps/calamari/steak/chicken as well as the traditional ingredients for the plate) and my brother got the Tacu Tacu with a perfectly cut Skirt Steak (ordered Medium Rare and it was SPOT on). As a Peruvian, I am very particular about the tastes I expect and hope for when I visit a Peruvian restaurant, and by FAR this is the new standard for me in taste/appearance/texture. Although I had to drive 40 minutes to get to Caldwell from my town, it was worth going the distance. For those looking to feel like they are home (Peru) for a meal, or someone who wants to an authentic Peruvian dish with fresh meats/vegetables, this place is for you. Visited for the first time today on my lunch break. and I can say I was very impressed with what I discovered. The decor is very homey and inviting. Makes you feel like you're eating in your grandmothers house. I chose to take out, but while I sat and waited for my food you can see the attentiveness of the servers and the passion they have for the business. I ordered the Bistec A Lo Pobre!! Yum yum yum!! Couldn't have been better if I wanted it to be. Everything was so flavorful and hot despite the drive back to work. Prices weren't eye gouging, and portion was perfect. I enjoyed the skirt steak but I found that their rice and beans are lacking. (Colombians win in this department). As for their noodle stir fry - I'm not a fan of their flavors. I liked their Tres Leche cake a lot! Creamy, moise and not too sweet. Price: Since we ordered additional apps, drinks and having to tip on the full price I've spent an extra $43.00 on top of the $33 of the group on. Total bill without group on with tip is around $100. We walked in at 10:30pm with the kitchen closing and the owner still welcomed us with open arms. Great hospitality and service here. We didn't have much time to look at the menu but a short chat with the owner and voila perfect dishes were matched with our hungry stomachs. We started with a half dozen clams topped with onions, tomatoes, cilantro and a lime dressing. The clams were a bit overcooked but the topping was bursting with flavor. My tacu tacu with chicken was great. The sides that come with it were also delicious. The rice and beans were smashed together and flattened on the grill top. So unique! I gobbled all the yucca fries which i dipped in the sauce from the chicken. His seafood dish was just as great. The fish remained moist inside yet had a nice crunch on the outside. And yes the prices are a bit steep but the dishes are huge! I ate my leftovers again for lunch the next day so in that aspect I would say that the prices are reasonable. I will definitely be back and hopefully prepared with a bottle of wine and dining at a more reasonable time. read more

Let me tell you a little story about a Peruvian restaurant called Sabor Peru. Let's start with the meaning "Sabor". It means flavor and sadly only my purple corn drink had flavor. What bothered me the most was the ceviche. Any expert in ceviche understands limes are a key element to the dish. So why serve a super acidic ceviche? It's suppose to be tangy! Here's an idea: how about testing the limes first. Misrepresenting a ceviche dish like this is very disappointing. Tallarín verde with steak. Here's what was right about the dish. The green color of the pesto sauce because the "Sabor " in the pesto sauce didn't exist. You know who makes better pesto sauce, my sister. One who never cooks but knows how to follow a recipe. When it came to the steak, its similar to a beef jerky. Not good. The hucanicana sauce on the side was more like a cheez whiz out of a bottle. Oh and the Fried potato and fried yucca was totally unnecessary. Pick one. Bistec a lo pobre dish had the same problem when it came to the steak and lacked flavor. I think my fried eggs and rice was the best part of this dish. Oh, Ore-Ida brand frozen fries are better than fries served. Tallarín Saltado with chicken and beef. An Asian style noodle dish turned out to be simply ok but the beef; still beef jerky. The chicken; dry. Lastly, the Chaufa Especial dish ( fried rice ) was not tasty either. At this point, you may be asking what's going on? Or thinking I am too harsh. No. I am telling you the food here is just edible. Nothing was amazing! Nothing lived up to my normal standards when eating Peruvian cuisine.Unacceptable. read more

Usually when you're asked how you want your steak cooked at a restaurant, you're under the impression that they aim to be a fine dining spot. Sabor Peru, however, does not make the cut. Speaking of cuts, the cuts of steak offered here are far from premium. Their steaks were dry, thin, and well done regardless of what you asked for. This place is pricey for the quality of food. I agree with other fellow Yelpers when they say tasteless. Peruvian dishes are known for their seasoning. Nothing memorable here though. Best thing I consumed was the chica morada. I ordered the tallarin saltado especial with chicken and steak. The noodles were good. They appeared to be fried which is awesome considering I rarely come across that. There's where the goodness stopped. The beef was dry. The chicken was dry. Big downer. Only thing saving my entrée was my appetite as I hadn't eaten all day and the touch of ginger they added giving the noodles a sweet and sour taste. The ceviche appetizer is $17 a plate! Insane for the portion and even crazier for the quality! The spice was lacking. It needed salt and the acidity level was off. Ceviche should be tangy not bitter. The papa a la huancaina sauce was an orange yellow (like mustard) color instead of a light creamy canary yellow - I've never seen that in my life! We all agreed it tasted like cheese wiz. Gross. Growing up in an authentic peruvian household, most dishes on Sabor's menu are easy to make at home but I'm always willing to dish out a few dollars for a taste of culinary greatness. Sabor, however, misses the mark. I would've been better off buying all the ingredients myself and had my mother prepare all the dishes we ordered. Onto the service...on a positive note the waitresses were friendly but not very attentive. We found ourselves waiting around for someone to take our order. The first thing they brought to the table were fried crackers like the ones they give away at Chinese restaurants. Whattt? I'm not sure how it all fits in the fine dining experience Sabor's menu prices try to create. Went in with a Groupon deal dinner for four and still left with a $18 bill. When you add on tip, we realized we racked up $140+ bill (without the Groupon) for a meal that was mediocre. You're better off going to Montclair and eating at another nice little BYOB restaurant that starts with a C and ends in A. Trust me your money is better spent there. read more

A hidden GEM!!! Found and went to this place because of the other yelpers reviews and I can honestly say it was that much more than what I expected! The ceviche medley I can't begin to describe just how phenomenal the flavors are! Being Ecuadorian, ceviche is what we do an trusting to eat anyone else's is don't so with great reluctance but this is incredible! The chicken empanadas like I've never had before simply yummy! MY MAIN ENTREE WAS SUPERIOR TO ANY TACU TACU RICE I'VE EVER HAD EVER! It was accompanied by bistec (steak, onions & tomato) with large butterfly garlic shrimp, nice cut yuca fries with a side of huyancaina sauce...simply to die for! My husband had a house special chaufa rice that was so well seasoned it gives new meaning to anything fried rice! Desert was a tres leche with just the perfect amount of sweet n cinnamon flavors! The service??! I had to hug and kiss both Horacio and Nandi because I felt like I was at home only being catered to! Great personalities and charisma with a dose of attentiveness that was not overbearing:). We can't wait to go back! Oh and get this, free Sangria on Sundays!!! I work in Fairfield and was looking for a good Latino restaurant in the area - to get away from the usual Italian deli, sushi, fast food chains that are prevalent here. Well what a pleasant surprise this was. I ordered a skirt steak with rice and beans and it was cooked to perfection. The beans were flavorful, the meat was tender but had a nice char to it and the chimichurri sauce it came with was TO DIE FOR. I had to stop myself from finishing the plate immediately because I practically inhaled it in less than 5 minutes. The service was very good as well with both the host/busser and server being very attentive to my needs. The inside is very cute and cozy as well with some nice decoration. This authentic Peruvian restaurant is always a hit. Owned by husband and wife, these two know how to run a successful restaurant to keep their customers coming back. I've been to Sabor several times and I am always pleased with the dining experience. Sabor is very artsy so you'll see how creative the owners are. It's a warm atmosphere with art on colorful walls and pleasant music playing in the background. Now about the food, I've tried many of their dishes that are great but I am such a fan of their Lomo Saltado. They also serve Tacu Tacu (a traditional Peruvian dish), and many more authentic dishes. The last time I came here I ordered the Red Snapper special for that night. It was good, different as I don't always order red snapper. If you come here, you absolutely have to order ceviche. You won't be disappointed! Make sure to bring your bottle of wine as it is byob, and make sure to save room for dessert because they make a good flan and tres Leches cake. This place is so quaint that I just wish they had an acoustic guitar player on Friday and Saturday nights for additional entertainment. That would be the cherry on top. read more

I was so excited when I bought the Groupon for $36 based on another review. To my surprise if you buy the Groupon you are only saving $6 (??) AND there are only two items that fit the description unless you want to pay the difference and then you can get another option on the menú. Someone should tell the people from this restaurant how Groupon works and what's the purpose of it. The Groupon is misleading because it tells you you will have savings of 40% meanwhile the prices are the same!! Meaning it doesn't make any difference if you buy from Groupon or from then directly, you will be spending the same amount of money. On top of that, the food is NOT that great. Being peruvian myself and having so many amazing options for peruvian restaurants in NJ, this one falls into the mediocre. It's ok but not great, and for the money you pay, being not this a cheap restaurant (average entree is $20) I would say SAVE your money and drive a little bit further to Passaic county and enjoy a truly amazing experience in another restaurant. With all due respect to the other reviews that made me come to this place, let me tell you, I'm sorry but this is, at its best, mediocre food. Sorry. Get another cook, lower your prices. Tried out this place to see if there is an alternative to Costanera in Montclair, which I love but am interested in other Peruvian joints with a different selection of entrees. Sabor was average. Ceviche was good but a small portion (considering the fact that nearly 20% of the plate is taken by a mountain of yam and potato). I was asked how I wanted my steak but it didn't seem to matter since it came out well done anyway. Fried seafood was good but as long as one as fresh ingredients it's kind of hard to mess up anything battered and fried... The desserts were ok and not too memorable (I don't even remember what I ordered). Service was polite, and like the food, just seemed average. It wasn't a bad experience and it wasn't a fantastic one, so unfortunately overall a forgettable experience. I'm not familiar with Rutherford so I don't know if there is another comparable place close by, but I would not make a drive out just to come here. read more
