We've had pretty much everything on the menu and trust me everything is delicious! The staff is always friendly. It is on street parking but we've never had an issue finding parking. Chinese soup crackers with some sort of green spicy salsa?nonetheless, the server was very friendly and accommodating even though the restaurant was packed! OMG! My BF and I wanted to try somewhere NEW(for us)and low key. I am beyond happy that I stumbled upon this little GEM on Yelp last night and decided to RSVP today for tonight! So..... Reservation was for 6:30pm, arrived at 6:35pm, sat us within 2 minutes! Waiter was attentive, right away opened our wine and brought out wine glasses and complimentary ice water, fried noodle/cracker thingys(similar to what the Chinese serve w/ soups) and a spicy green sauce oh and menus. About 5 minutes later, the waiter returned and ran down the specials to a T- explaining what each dish consisted of. He took our order- house salad, 2 empanadas(1chix/1beef), steak a la pobre(spell chk), steak tacu tacu. He asked how we would like our steak- i replied well done but not burnt. He chuckled and said I know what you mean. ;) The apps were out within 10 minutes tops! We wasted no time- we were starving..... 3 minutes later out came the most well prepared meal at I've had in a while.....maybe EVER (sorry mom)!! I ordered the tacu tacu and the waitress said to me as she placed down my plate "this is my favorite", I knew at that very moment, it would become a favorite of mine. One word- HEAVEN!!!!! The food is good but the prices are ridiculous! They have the most overpriced specials I have ever seen! Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but the last time I checked, when something is a special, it means that its sold at a discounted price or that its at least moderately priced, not the most expensive things on the menu! My parents ordered the specials because the owner walked up to our table to greet us and just went on and on about how many specials the restaurant had. Anyways, my parents ordered the specials and each one was about $30. $30 for sone rice and a steak?! Seriously?! My brother ordered a dish for $20 dollars at the same restaurant and got way more than the $30 special! The bill was like $120 and we were not happy because the manager basically tricked us into ordering her "specials" because she babbled on and on about like 10 or 12 specials and said everything except for the prices. You can get steak and lobster tail meals for 3 people at Outback Steak house for $35 dollars instead of $120! This restaurant has good food, like really good food but if your not rolling in money, STAY AWAY FROM THE SPECIALS! Because the amount you get and the quality of the dish is not worth $30! Yes, this is the same Sabor Peru that used to be in Rutherford, around the corner from Cafe Matisse. Now they're in the second-floor space in Caldwell formerly occupied by Casa Filippo. In Rutherford the portions were very generous and the ceviche, in particular, was outstanding. Portions have shrunk substantially, and the ceviche is now overwhelmed with lime juice (which they inexplicably refer to as "tiger's milk"), to a degree that obliterates the flavor of the seafood itself. The beef in the Lomo Saltado was overcooked. Arroz Chaufa was just okay. Parihuela and Pescado Sudado were quite good, but again stingy portions. Service was fine. I'm sure we'll be back, but I'm nostalgic for the old Sabor Peru, when they were more ambitious and less complacent. read more

I have eaten at Sabor Peru twice. The food was just okay - they were out of guacamole though, that was disappointing. After that, on 3 separate occasions, I tried ordering tostones with guacamole to go. I called different times of the day, different days of the week. The answer was always, "We are out of guacamole." The explanation was that they have many private parties and order a small batch. Then maybe you should order more. If it is on the menu, it should be available at least once. I was drawn to this place for its unique news coverage on Channel 7 neighborhood eats featuring a Peruvian Restaurant that was owned by an Armenian and Mexican couple. We thought it would be a unique take on my beloved cuisine. For full disclosure, I am full blooded Peruvian, lived in NJ for 35 years plus and I know authentic Peruvian food. With that said, I will share my reaction to the dishes we ordered. Ceviche de pescado- Good Lord, do not, please, do not use bottled lemon juice. Just don't. It has a carbonated taste that takes away from the full flavor of a ceviche. Other than that, the portion and presentation was good. It had mote, canchita and both white potato and sweet potato. The portion of the fish was generous. Papa Rellena- A lot of potato, not enough relleno. Try adding 30% more stuffing. Tasty, flavorful but just more stuffing please. Lomo Saltado- it was decent, only missing the red onion as opposed to the white onion, other than that it was standard. Breaded Chicken- Milanesa- overall pretty good, standard in most Latin cuisines. I liked that you can actually see the strands of the chicken breast, so extra points on texture. The canary beans were cute, just needed a tad bit more garlic and salt. 3 Leches Cake- very sweet and indulgent. So overall, there is some room for improvement, but for the Groupon price, it was a steal! Hope this helps! read more

I have been going to Sabor Peru, since they opened in Rutherford, almost 10 years ago. The food has always been good. My problem is this .....my daughter bought me a $25 gift certificate for Christmas a year and a half ago. Now, they are in Caldwell and it's a trek to drive up there. Thank goodness I called before I went as they refused to honor my gift certificate. A customer for all those years, of which they just lost, would act in the way she did. The owner that is. I asked her what does she do with the money she receives, for the gift certificates that are expired, she told me they just keep it. How do you like that ?? What kind of business does that ?? Our dinner who'd have easily come to over $100 for four. Needless to say we won't be going there tonight. What a disappointment, but there are too many Peruvian restaurants around here. For me to get that upset. Don't buy a gift certificate there unless you plan to use it right away. The pettiness of it all and for $25. I guess they don't care about their customers. She's there mainly to line her pockets. I gave them one star as you can't give them less. But, If it was up to me, they wouldn't receive any. Walked in with a group of 5, we were immediately greeted by the friendly staff and the new owner Diana. The restaurant was filling up quickly but we managed to get a table and had us seated quickly! Our first time at Sabor Peru was easily a 5/5 experience. The ambiance is great! As soon as you get to the top of the steps, you're greeted with friendly faces and some lovely music. The whole restaurant feels like you're in a someone's house in some other country. Such a nice departure from the standard, everyday restaurant experience. Fantastic service, probably one of the best experiences I've had with servers in quite a while. Extremely attentive and all on the same page. All so friendly and helpful. The food was incredible! You can tell that there was thought put into everything. But just one word tainted the meal: overcooked. The ceviche flavor was alright but everything was like I said, way overcooked. First off, I don't think you're supposed to cook ceviche at all right? And if you are, then this one was overdone. All the seafood was tough. This overcooked-ness (not a word) was consistent in all the other dishes we had as well including the special skirt steak with pressed rice and beans and the beef/shrimp in the peruvian fried rice. But you know this is something that they can fix very easily. And maybe I just went on a bad night? Who knows. Chicken noodle soup, I don't understand it. If I'm not mistaken, they used spaghetti. But I really want this place to do well for some reason. I think they are trying really hard. The staff was really nice and friendly, and I don't know anything about Rutherford but from the looks of it, it doesn't seem like there are many options. Read the reviews on Yelp and was expecting much more. I'm guessing that since the location is in East Rutherford, a decent majority of the clientele is not familiar with authentic Peruvian food. There are several Peruvian restaurants in Passaic, Clifton, and Paterson of equal quality for less money, but you have to deal with some neighborhoods not as nice as downtown East Rutherford. The ceviche had very tender Octopus and tasted great, but it was a little on the spicy side. Still a very good ceviche. The chicha (purple corn drink) is made fresh at the restaurant and was excellent. I had the lomo saltado. The meat was tender and there was a lot of it. Wished there was a little more french fries. My wife and I have been to Sabor Peru countless times over the past 5 years and we've never been disappointed. The atmosphere and service are both top notch but ultimately it's the food that brings us back time and time again. The house ceviche especial is our go-to starter and by far the best we've found anywhere in NJ. It's loaded with the fresh seafood & herbs and the sweet potato provides the perfect balance to the spicy kick. Hunting for the final morsels has become a sport for us! I would also recommend the house especial parihuela or the sopa la criolla as both were fantastic. If you're ordering entrees from the menu, you can't wrong with any of the stir fry or lo mein dishes. But be sure to check the specials for the tacu tacu (I prefer the steak) . This dish is the one that hooked me to Sabor Peru for life! There are also usually delicious desserts available; tres leches and flan top the list. Sabor Peru is an experience. I ordered Lomo Saltado Especial (french fries tossed with beef, chicken & shrimp), i got Lo mein noodles Especial (sorry i forget what they call it). I tell the waiter, he says "oh sorry, i will get you the proper dish." honestly, i didn't feel like waiting so i said i would eat what they gave me, I just wasn't feeling it, it was very tasty, but i wasn't in the mood for Chinese food. I ate a few bites, i seen a waitress walk by and i asked her to remove it from the bill and told her why. My family has been coming here for years and my nephews children like the place that is a bonus when you have pickie eating children. The service here is top notch and very informative. I have warmed up to the food and now enjoy the simplicity and freshness of the ingredients. I am of Italian and french ancestory and tend to have heavy sause and seasoning.
