Lost Maples Winery 2-minute drive from the state park
    Jake H.

Lost Maples Winery is a great boutique winery just two minutes from Lost Maples State Park. It's the spot to go to relax after a nice hike (and to get away from the kids). The owners are great and know their stuff. They have a number of award winning wines so I had to take a bottle home. Due to the virus, wine tasting wasn't available and I couldn't drink by the nice pond but I'll be back for that part!

Owners Dan and Sue Schulse founded this place back in 2016 with dreams of making fine estate wine after a lovely and inspiring trip to Tuscany in 2013. Most wine trekkers may be familiar with the Turtle Creek Olives and Vines tasting room that has been open in downtown Kerrville for the last few years. Now Texas wine fans can journey just a little bit further to see where the magic happens. As a family-owned and operated facility, this business functions not only as a winery and vineyard but also as a working farm with lambs, chickens, pecans, and other agricultural products. Their focus on sustainable farming practices and 100% estate grown Texas fruit is an unwavering commitment on their part and something you will appreciate when you visit. The property's unique microclimate, shaped by nearby hills, creek, and favorable soil conditions, supports the cultivation of high-quality crops. Tannat and Mourvèdre constitute the largest number of vines, but there is also Montepulciano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Trebbiano, and a little bit of Merlot. Yes, good Cabernet Sauvignon can be grown in the Hill Country, but this locale has that unique setting that helps support that. Although wine production is currently done elsewhere, plans are underway to soon have everything done onsite. There are two main tasting options (mixed and reds). Pick whichever, you can't go wrong! Starting off this tasting session was the 2024 Trebbiano. It has quite an impressive bouquet of tropical fruits, especially pineapple and some fantastic acids adding just the right balance. Next up was the 2024 Rosé. Made from Tannat, it has fantastic floral aromas and peach and caramel notes complimented with good minerality and a lovely shade of salmon. Moving to the reds, the first to be sampled was the 2023 Nine to Five. This blend of 64% Tannat and 36% Montepulciano expressed good dark fruit notes and good acidity along with moderate tannins. The second red that was sampled was the NV Cabernet Sauvignon. A blend of 2021 and 2022 vintages, this wine has a very opaque color with lots of dark fruit notes, firm tannins, and a bit of tobacco. Take your time sipping this one as it opens quite nicely over time. Following that one was the 2021 Red Blend. This red wine mix of 60% Montepulciano, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot is medium bodied, well balanced and has a nice touch of earthiness. Capping off the tasting was the 2023 Tannat. This deep bold red wine has a velvety feel and notes of dark berries with a touch of smoke. It can be a bit grippy right now, but it should smooth out with time. Coming in 2026 is a reserve Montepulciano along with a fantastic Mourvèdre to look forward to, so worth planning a visit this year to try them. The tasting room and outdoor patio are both truly excellent and you will feel so comfortable. With beautiful hill country views and a relaxed setting next to the river, you just might want to camp here all night to soak up the vibes. Hopefully there will be some excellent live music when you stop by for a visit. Don't forget to sample some of their super delicious food items, especially the lamb meatballs. The staff are quite knowledgeable and wonderful to work with during your tasting experience. Once you discover this charming little gem, savor every minute...and every drop of wine. Cheers!

Great Vineyard, Frustrating Food Experience…read more This was our first visit to Singing Waters Vineyard, and the property itself is absolutely darling. The setting is beautiful, the staff at the vineyard were friendly and welcoming, and the wine was tasty. We really enjoyed the atmosphere and time with friends. However, the food truck experience was a big letdown and honestly the main reason we're hesitant to return. I paid $12 for a hot dog combo (pictured)--just a single hot dog and a small bag of chips. That price felt excessive for what we received. The kids' burger was $8 and was tiny...about the size of a quarter dollar with melted cheese and chips. The value just wasn't there. What made things worse was the service. Our friends ordered the exact same food right before us and received theirs much earlier. We waited about 40 minutes longer for the same order. It was frustrating, and it did make us wonder if my earlier comment about the hot dog price being extreme played a role. The kids were all still hungry. The vineyard itself is lovely and worth visiting, but I strongly recommend reconsidering the food truck setup...either pricing, portions, or vendor choice. The food experience didn't match the quality of the venue, and it definitely affected our overall impression.

Scimitar Hill Vineyards has one of those breath-taking views that are so majestic and a passionate owner. Tom Hendrix and his wife are the proud owners of this piece of paradise which opened a couple of years ago. His ranch is home to about 33 scimitar-horned oryx. Ironically, raising oryx was the original purpose of the ranch. The vines and wine making came later. This is Tom's later in life hobby and next chapter after a career in information technology. The tasting room sits atop a hill overlooking the animals and vineyard. Inside the tasting room, Tom keeps two plaques on the mantle featuring his favorite wine quotes, one from Earnest Hemmingway and the other from Gerald Asher. A sign that Tom's passion and love IS in this business. He and his wife have enjoyed traveling in France and they were inspired by similarities of climate and soil with central Texas. So they decided why can't they do the same thing here in Texas? The initial plantings in the vineyard began in 2009 and they now have about 2.5 acres planted on two separate plots. Varietals include Albariño, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. His estate wines express the labor of love that he and his wife have put into this venture. We tried all the wines available in the tasting room on our visit. Let the 2014 Malbec breathe for a bit, then you can soak in some great notes on this vintage. The 2016 Cabernet Franc needs some time to settle as it is still a bit tight, but you can discern the nice cherry flavors that will make this wine a keeper. The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a bit young now, but has some lovely berry notes that will only improve with age. The 2016 Merlot has a lot of great flavor and a nice long finish. The rock star of his selection is the 2016 Petit Verdot. The dark purple color and the enticing nice long finish puts a whole new meaning to bonding with great wine. This one has the potential to age and drink well for the next decade. When Tom feels that the Albariño vines are mature enough, he'll start making some estate wines of that, too. Yet another excuse for a return trip! Tom is a great guy to chat with and makes the hospitality of his place that much more welcoming. Another fine example of how small boutique wineries make Texas wines personal. This is a stunning spot to stop, that is a bit out of the way, but so very much worth your time and effort. Plus, on the way you can visit Bandera and enjoy some cowboy country, so what's not to love? Plot your course for a new winery destination and stop in and say hi and see the wines being produced in Camp Verde, Texas.

I was…read morethe first to arrive around 130pm, but about 4 other couples walked in not 10 mins after me. It was a fairly hot day for the end of winter, so I chose to sit inside. They have a handful of high top tables and about 17 different wines on the tasting menu. The prices for the bottles range from $24 - $165. One interesting note, the grapes are currently grown in Lubbock due to the water shortage in this area, but they have some vines that are being replanted on this property so maybe in a few years they will be ready. They do have some snacks to try/purchase in the cold case, and more dry snacks that aren't refrigerated on the other side of the room. Since we hadn't eaten lunch yet, we grabbed a meat and cheese from the refrigerated case for $10 Restrooms are in a side building adjacent to the tasting room building. I tried the El Jardin, Albarino, Cinsaut, Sangiovese, Mourvedre, and Cabernet Franc. We also sampled a 1/2 pour of the Nectar du Terroir which is a fortified dessert wine instilled with brandy. I liked it but just be warned that it is strong at 17%. El Jardin - light white wine easy to drink; would go well with seafood Cinsaut - sort of like a pinot noir but slightly bitter Sangiovese - fruity similar to cinsaut but not as bitter Mourvedre - tasted similar to cinsaut but slightly better Cabernet franc - the best of the bunch, pretty smooth Overall, we enjoyed our experience here but are not huge wine drinkers and didn't really find one we were in love with. We didn't end up taking home any bottles but will always enjoy the memories. One note, their wine is reportedly not sold at liquor stores, but it is sent to select wine bars throughout Texas, so you may find it in your town; otherwise, the only other ways to get it is through their website, or by visiting the tasting room just outside of Boerne. They do not have a tasting room in Lubbock where the grapes are grown.
