I was truly looking forward to my meal here only because of the reviews I found. But unfortunately disappointment came very during my meal. I ordered the egg fried rice and the Hoisin ducks rolls, but both were incredibly bland. This was definitely not fried rice. If any, it was steamed white rice mixed with a couple pieces of scrambled egg. The duck was also tasteless. The cocktail was the best thing, which is unfortunate for a restaurant. I thought this place was awesome! It's a great location and the decorations are cool. We had a table of six and they put us at a big long table (which was great). For parties of 6+ they can do a pre-fixe menu type thing. However, we wanted items not on that menu and the restaurant was great about letting us order what we wanted. The noodle dishes are really good -- the spiciness is fairly on point with their descriptions (obviously more spicy if you choose to directly eat the Thai chilis in the dishes). The cocktails are awesome. Super delicious and interesting. We had a few rounds of cocktails :) I'd totally come back here for another meal and would recommend visitors to come too! read more

I found Saba to be quite a stylish Asian restaurant. The pink decor, dim lights, classy seating and bar area, packed to the brim with customers, published their own cookbook, seemed like one of the top Dublin places to eat! When we entered, the staff were very friendly and welcoming and efficient with their service. The food didn't take too long to come despite the place being packed, and it tasted quite good albeit a bit too spicy for me. I'm not much of a fan of spicy food so the choice on the menu was quite small, this being an Asian restaurant and all, but there sure is a lot to choose from otherwise. The negative thing was that the inside was kinda smokey and hard to breathe, and smelled to strongly of food that I was kind of afraid it would stick to my clothes. How did I not hear about this place before? My friend mentioned it and we thought we would try out luck, on payday Friday which looking back was a bold move cause they were packed. We had not made a reservation however the super nice staff found us two seats at the bar and somehow it was an amazing experience just being able to watch the bartenders make drinks, the amount of skill and care they put into making those things was impressive, it was like dinner and a show! Now to the food which I am pretty sure was the best Asian food I've ever had. I listened to my fellow yelpers and tried the green monk fish and it did not disappoint man that was good. Ok so background: grew up in SF bay area and have been eating Thai food my entire life. Sabas food is really really unimpressive. I can't stress this enough. Perhaps if my meal cost 10 euros or less I would have been less shocked by how unsatisfied I was with this overpriced meal. For example, the seabass in miso was very simple....something I could have made at home. The noodles were bland and covered in sauce. The cocktails were totally watered down. Actually the best part of the meal was the butternut squash... The only un-asian part of the meal. One star is for the trendy ambiance and nice service. I really wanted to like this place I really did....but if you have high standards for Thai food then stay away! read more

I spent five nights in Dublin and had dinner at Saba twice. As a vegetarian, I was struggling to find hearty and healthy options, so I gave Saba a try on the first day and was totally blown away by the food. Everything was super tasty and flavorful and very reasonably priced (the location of this restaurant is in a posher area). The service was really great, and they were kind enough to let me enjoy a cocktail while reading on my Kindle. :) I would definitely come back to Saba next time I'm in Dublin! read more

Saba is the main restaurant of the now well known and popular Rathmines takeaway. Its down what used to be a bit of a side street but in recent years in becoming busier and in Saba's case, well visited. Saba bills itself as asian fusion and serves Thai-Vietnamese dishes. The restaurant itself is one of the selling points, funky and minimalist with lots of black and white photos in main room. The bar at the front is also great. They were still only serving wine the night we visited. I can definitely recommend the Phad Khing, with chicken, you can also get it with beef, prawns or tofu & veg. The massaman curry is also worth a look, be warned its very filling. If your looking for something spicy then eye wateringly hot phad kraprow is your only man. Unfortunately one of my favourite dishes from Saba to go isn't available here, the vegan friendly butternut squash curry(gaeng karee fukatong). If your not a meat eat though, theres plenty of other veggies dishes on the menu as well as lots of tasty sides. Came here for the lunch special which is 2 courses for €13-€15 (memory failing me here) but you get the drill. First of all, I'm a big fan of the decor & interior of the place, it's all wooden and laid in out in big spaces, it really feels like the place can breathe. In keeping in theme with the wholeness feeling of the place, they also offer some very healthy dishes for a Thai restaurant. I had the ginger salad to start & steamed sea bass for the main. The salad was delicious, and they didn't hold back on the ginger either which I was pleasantly surprised to see. Good sized portion too which is what you want when you're opting for a salad. Next up was the steamed sea bass, my one complaint is that the only sides they would do were rice or noodles, I'm kinda growing accustomed to ordering vegetables or even potatoes instead of these options so was a bit of a let down. A minor quibble on my part though. The sea bass itself was very good and came in a lime sauce that just worked perfectly and tasted completely original. Overall this place has a lot going for it and it seems like it'd do just as well as a lunchtime spot, a date night or an evening with a group of friends. It's definitely on my 'return to list'. In short: A great healthy thai restaurant with a nice wide open interior, perfect for any occasion you could think of (except breakfast obvs). read more

I've been to saba a few times with work and I kind of like it, kind of don't. I love the idea of it - asian food, great cocktails, lovely décor....but I'm not crazy about the main courses. There's always about five things I want on the starter menu, but anything I've had from the main courses, I've never been too happy with. Starter-wise I love the white fish and vegetable tempura, hoisin duck rolls, black pepper squid....and then for my main I pull a blank. It's kind of just bland noodle dishes and some curry dishes. Mainly because I wouldn't have expected good Asian food in Ireland (apologies to my Irish friends for doubting the culinary scene in your country), and my expectations were quite low. Saba definitely made me re-examine my personal prejudices. Atmosphere: It's a cool restaurant where you find cool people chomping down on good food and throwing back some well-made drinks. It's also packed because people know it to be good. For dinner, it's dimly let and a bit noisier that you'd want for an intimate date. Food: The spring rolls and chicken satay appetizers were excellent. The real knockout was the Bangkok Beef Noodle entree. I was literally talking about it the next day; that's how good it was. Drinks: I didn't have any, but my crew were sucking down their drinks like there was no tomorrow. Bottom line, it was awesome and I'd go there again in a heartbeat. read more

Went here the other night for the first time and was very impressed. Great layout, with enough space to fill it well, however there is no feel of being cramped against other diners at all. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Where we were initially sat a light on the far side of the room was shining directly at me, so we asked to move. The light remained, so the guy grabbed a stick and tiled the light away without issue. The food is delicious, and extremely fresh as Thai cuisine tends to be. You don't come out feeling guilty or bloated. Topped off with a few glasses of South African Shiraz it was a meal that I will probably be going back for again soon. read more

I've wanted to try Saba for years but last night was the first experience. Unfortunately I was dreadfully disappointed after such a long wait. My co-diners & I have frequented Koh in the Italian Quarter previously due to it's proximity to our office but we braved the elements & went to Clarendon St for our 6pm reservation. I had been very impressed with the level of customer service upon calling to make the booking the previous evening - the follow-up texts to confirm are a nice touch also. Upon entering, we were greeted & taken to our table by the Maitre D', who delayed & fussed getting menus for us. When we sat down, I had been given a set menu, along with the normal one, which laid out 3 courses for €25. Bingo, we thought, & ordered off same, even though our preferences were on the regular menu... (after a recommendation from a colleague, I had wanted to try the Green Monkfish curry & one my of co-diners had wanted to order off the salad menu, but for the sake of being more economical, we decided to order off the set menu) The waitress seemed quite pushy to get us to order - however, having not been in the restaurant before, we required some additional time to peruse the menu. We ordered our cocktails, then she came back for our food order, however we still received our starters before the drinks arrived. One of the cocktails was pure alcohol & actually impossible to drink. Although I DID enjoy my starter, mains & cocktail (vegetable spring rolls, a butternut squash yellow curry & a marvelous sake & champagne cocktail), the difficulty arose when we were asked if we'd like to see the dessert menu. I'd decided that I would like dessert - my two co-diners weren't as pushed but wanted to take a look at the menu given that it was a set price regardless. The waitress returned with the regular dessert menu (i.e. not the set menu) & when I questioned how it worked when we had ordered off the set menu, I was advised that they didn't serve a set menu on Fridays & that she would fetch the manager. A different Maitre D' (I assume there had been a shift swap, & actually this was the gentleman that had taken my booking the previous evening) came over & attempted to tell us in no uncertain terms that there wasn't a set menu on Friday. I argued this, saying that we'd been provided with one, ordered off same as a result & that it didn't state anywhere that it wasn't available on certain days. Initially, I believe, he was possibly going to let us order dessert at the €25 set cost but he then returned a few minutes later with a copy of our bill so far & told me that if we didn't order dessert, the bill would come to less than 3 set costs (plus drinks) & actually bamboozled us with prices - so we decided it was all FAR too much trouble for the sake of another dish & left it at that. I believe that we should absolutely NOT have been punished for their mistake in giving out menus that weren't applicable. My share of the bill was €30, for 1 drink & 2 courses - when technically I should only have been paying €33 for 1 drink & 3 courses. Saba advertised a service they wouldn't provide & yet we were the ones to suffer. Upon leaving, the waitress apologised for the confusion (in my opinion, the best course of action would have been living up to the menu provided or offering us a complimentary drink etc) & I left feeling like we'd been had.... and still wanting dessert. It's going to take an AWFUL lot to persuade me to return - especially at the prices it currently offers - if I even ever bother to go back. Very disappointing. read more

Often, Monday nights are for resting away the hangover remnants that are clinging on after a fun-filled weekend. However, last night I took a friend out for birthday dinner in Saba. We couldn't get over the crowded restaurant! On a Monday night! The cuisine is Thai and Vietnamese and very tasty. However, they appear to be incredibly fond of peanut, which features in a lot of dishes. Not a fan of peanut butter, I wasn't impressed with that aspect of the menu. Also, the dessert list was fairly barren as it offered just two options. My friend got the apple and rhubarb crumble, which came in a round clay bowl. She looked at it uncertainly and said, "It looks like sawdust..." It tasted okay at least. A three-course meal costs €25. The service was speedy and the waiters friendly but not overbearing. If you're all about being elegant, there is no ladylike way to sit down as the seating consists of long benches... Maybe avoid wearing a skirt, unless you're a fan of flashing your undies! Not that I cared really. Celebrities do it all the time! So if on a Monday night, you'd rather avoid a double-dose of Corrie, nip out to Saba on Clarendon Street and get that Friday feeling all over again! read more

Was in Saba last week (as I pretty much point-blank refused to allow someone to pay for a meal at Chapter One!) so they suggested here as they are well aware at this stage of my love for Asian food. Was really disappointed from start - maitre'd was rushing around looking for a table (and we had booked - for a change!) and then seated us slap bang in the middle of a table for eight and a table of 12....eek. Then waited for ages for a waitress to give us a menu, another eternity for a winelist, and eventually to order....hmmm. Starters for me was veg and fish tempura....I guess i was expecting Yamamori & upwards standards, but nowhere close - was batter with some veg & fish - yuk. For main, I stuck with a fairly dependably chicken pad thai....... i ate the pad thai but no chicken - it tasted like the chicken leftovers you leave in a fridge and then experiment with.... not good :) was just really hacked off with the whole thing because its got such a good rep and nobody working there that night seemed to care if any of the diners ever came back.... PS Winelist is hiiiiiiiideously overpriced..... On the upside, the cocktails do look tasty.... read more

I was meeting a friend for dinner last Friday after work and we had not made any decisions or arrangements. On my way to work that day I passed Saba and thought to myself 'mmm... Pad Thai' and so emailed my friend when I got in and got her approval. I tried to book a table for two but no such luck, which I was not surprised by as they are always packed. However, they have some high tables along the side opposite the bar for such disorgansied people, which are available on a first come, first served basis. Well sort of, I'll come back to that. We arrived at 6pm and were told they would need the table back at 7.30pm, which we didn't have a problem with. So we took our, very high, seats. On our table was a menu that told us we could have a starter, main course and tea/coffee for €15.95 or add on dessert for another €4. Nice price and nice menu too, which was not too restrictive. I ordered duck rolls and Pad Thai and my friend ordered vegetable parcels and Ho Chi Min and a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to wash it down. Now, here's where I get back to the first come, first served. We arrived before the tables on either side of us but they all got their starters first. I asked a passing waiter if he could check and lo and behold there had been an error placing our order. He apologised and he brought our starters out a few minutes later. My main concern had been that my main course would arrive without having received the duck rolls I was so looking forward to, but all that happened was we had been given a licence to stay longer than our alloted 90 minutes as they had delayed us. The starters were lovely and then the main courses arrived. I thought the portion looked awfully small, but it was a crafty deep bowl and I struggled to finish it in the end. The absolute gorgeousness of the Pad Thai however got me through it! While all this was going on the table to our left had ordered and received an unidentified dessert, which we thought and hoped might be the special of apple and rhubarb crumble. It was and it was good. Served piping hot but not with that soggy microwaved crumble and a scoop of good vanilla ice cream I nearly licked the glass it was served in. After all that I really don't know how I squeezed in the coffee, but sure it was included and in fairness to them we weren't being pushed out, so I managed. I think the manager was getting a bit stressed at us still being there, but he hid it well-ish. At 8.20pm we were presented with the bill for €60.90, for 3 courses, tea/coffee, a bottle of wine and almost two and a half hours. Bargain. I would happily go back tomorrow and I highly recommend the Pad Thai. read more

This was my first visit to Saba after many many recommendations. Now I can see why. Everything before I even mention the food was aligning nicely. From the location to the interior to the atmosphere. It's just a really nice spot to be in. The staff were crazy efficient without making you feel like they were rushing you to get the table back. We had a ton of questions about the menu and they were all answered so helpfully and with a smile. No sooner had we ordered our starters than they were on the table. Prawn crackers with delicious dips, juicy satay skewers and some amazing thai style spicy wings. The plates were clean! My sister ordered the most amazing cocktail here. I wish I could remember the name, just look out for the coconut one. It is a revelation! Highly recommend it. It's no wonder their cocktail bar has won awards. I had a beef jungle curry for my main with brown rice. If you like your food really spicy, I'd point you in that direction. Lots of colourful veg going through it too so you can feel a little less guilty about the feast. Speaking of, I liked how they've broken down their menu. You have light, extra light, and paleo options as well catering to vegetarians and coeliacs. There's really something for everyone at Saba. read more

At last I got an opportunity to try SABA and of course the question is "was it worth it!?" Yup, yup, a thousand times yup. A group of about 10 of us piled into an already swinging restaurant, hungry, thirsty and full of expectations. We were left sitting for a little while longer than I would have liked and the drinks took for ever to arrive and I was beginning to think this was all going to take a very long time when the food order was taken some 40 mins after our entrance. My fears were unfounded! - the starters arrived quickly- a selection for us all to share and were plentiful and spectacular - with the exception of the chicken satay (the sauce was great, the chicken a bit dry and possibly too big a portion!) The mains.... Stand back people... actually no, sit down and hear this revelation... Q ordered NOT the red curry.... I know... unheard of. I ordered the masamann curry with beef and lots of extra chilli The conclusion? Bleeping spectacular, wonderful, great, I'll be back for more... lots more.... We wandered over to the bar to see what they had to offer after the mains - I am happy to report a fully licenced bar with a very respectable selection of good burbons including my personal fav - Woodfords reserve. Lots of people talk about this place and I have learnt that when it comes to Asian food the popular Irish opinion does leave a bit to be desired. This was no exception I am afraid. The ambience is excellent, service prompt and rushed and the food alright. The BOOM was just that, "too bloody hot" for me. I have never been to an Asian restaurant that I felt was too hot for me to handle. The menu did say it was fiery but then again I am used to that in menus and turns out to be weak. The food came out in rapid succession and if you ask me there was little or no personalization in the service. All they wanted to do was serve you and send you off. I don't mind that at cheap Chinese but not in what I would classify as a posh restaurant. My quest for good Asian restaurant continues :-( read more

Having previously enjoyed Saba for lunch, I was looking forward to a work Christmas dinner here. Group dinners + December = set menus and set prices, and unfortunately Saba's Christmas offering just wasn't up to scratch. For €39.95 euro plus 12.5% (= €45), you get a selection of starters to share (tasty, and nice to try the different offerings), a choice of main (quite a few to choose from, yet not as extensive as the normal menu), and then one of 2 puddings (chocolate tart or cheesecake). No complimentary drinks to start, no complimentary coffees to finish, not even a Christmas cracker to pull. If it wasn't for the decorations inside the restaurant (and the extortionate pricing), it was like a meal any other time of year. To make it worse, it almost seemed to be offering a "Ryanair-like" policy - basic pricing for 3 courses, with lots of optional extras to increase the cost (supplements for certain dishes, tempting Christmas cocktails, coffees, apperitifs, etc). A good lunchtime spot - yes. But if looking for somewhere to have a work do, would suggest continuing down the street to explore other options. read more

I went to Saba the first time after walking by it for months, it was after a hard long day of work. First thing that struck me was the three course menu for €24.95, so straight off the menu looked great value. Then the menu had a great selection; everything from hake, salmon, squid to steak. So it looked like everyone in the group could try something new. We went for the salmon, spring rolls and squid for starters and I have to say they packed some real punch in both in terms of spice and taste. For mains we had the hake, steak and beef noodles (4 star heat!!). The mains really hit the spot and the portion sizes were spot on. I was recently at Saba for a celebratory dinner. We had a small group (6) and were seated at a round table soon after arriving. Sadly the restaurant was too noisy to be able to hear conversation from companions across the table, so I wouldn't choose Saba for an intimate meal. The food and drinks were excellent (especially the Hoisin Duck Rolls!), and definitely a fusion style rather than traditional Thai or Vietnamese cuisine. The only real complaint is that additional drinks were added to our bill, but the staff immediately removed them when we pointed out the error. Overall, we had a lovely time. read more

I stopped in for lunch on a random weekday, so the restaurant was not very busy and I got a table right away. The staff was all very attentive and friendly. The menu is pretty big, and they have several gluten free items on the menu that are well marked, which is so great! I enjoyed my lunch. The portion was really big and the prices were reasonable. It seems to be a nice place, but it is hard to understand anyone at the table (we were a group of 6) without shouting. The starters are very good, but just the spring rolls were I think premanifacured ones. Main menu was awesome, the waitress recommended to add coconut milk to my curry, because I could have been to hot without. There was no place for dessert, but I ordered a cafe corretto (espresso + grappa) and was disappointed when I got a luke warm espresso with a big amount (almost 8cl) of a grappa, which tasted not too good - which I would have expected for that price. Stopped in last night to take a look at the menu, one outside in the window is difficult to read due to lack of lighting. I am glad I did. Host was attentive and accommodating in providing information and mostly seating, extremely fast seating for a very busy place on a Friday night during holiday shopping. Vibe is great but not trendy or over the top. I ordered the Saba Hot Whiskey and glad I did. Great new whiskey that I had never had, Teeling Small Batch, combine that with all of the other ingredients and then make it hot on a cold night makes it a must have. For food I had the Tom Yaam Soup with chicken, also available with shrimp. The soup was spicy but not sweaty spicy, nice blend of broth, chicken and mushrooms, very nice. The Hoisin duck rolls were delicious, presentation was nice and the flavor fresh and clean. I also had the Phuket, a delicious combination of the silkiest egg noodles, prawns, chili's and an amazing sauce. The noodles were like none I have had before. Delicate and thin, this made for a noodle that easily blended with the sauce and created a mouthful of flavor with each bite. Definitely would visit again when in Dublin. read more

First time in Saba the other night after plenty of recommendations. Was out and about in town, spur of the moment decision to go for some grub somewhere, Saba was close and the Sunday-Wednesday deal seemed a winner: 3 courses for 23.95. Being a monday night and early enough we managed to get a table but it soon filled up. Like the style and atmosphere was grand, not too noisy but enough of a buzz to feel like the room was enjoying itself. I'm a bit of a chicken satay demon, so that was the starter to have for me. Have to say I was disappointed. Plenty of chicken, which is always good, but it was only mildly warm like it had just been reheated, and not for long enough. Not much taste off the satay sauce either and it was quite.....milky I guess in texture. I prefer it chunky and thick. The satay in Mao round the corner comes to mind as a good one, although Siam Thai is probably my favourite (note to self: book Siam Thai soon). Main was green chicken curry and that was great. Good and spicy but with a slight sweet aftertaste. Lovely. Chocolate tart with pistachio ice cream to finish off and that was excellent aswell. Just the right amount and the pistachio worked very well even though I didn't think it would. Possibly deserving of another star but I'll base the rating on this occasion on what I'd have given if I was paying full price. read more

This review is only for their drink menu. On our Valentine's day escapades through City Center, we stopped by Saba for a drink. Drinks were light, refreshing and delicious. I've heard the food isn't up to par (if you're used to amazing asian food) but the drink/bar area is perfect for a night out. read more
