We came in after the hours online showed open until 11:00 pm and made an 8:30 reservation. We were running late and called multiple times to let them know so but no one answered the phone. When we arrived we were told the kitchen was closed but the table next to us was very clearly still ordering. Staff was not friendly, which was frustrating to only offer service to select guest even though everyone's a paying customer. The food was good, but the best part was the mixed greens- absolutely delicious and I still think about how tasty the sauce was. Three stars because extremely disappointed in the service. read more

Stuck with the pad Thai two nights in a row. Was very delicious minus the coriander. My TravelMate went with the Seabass which they truly enjoyed as well. The tempura squid as an appetizer was a great choice. The staff was very warm and inviting the two nights that we were there. Would definitely recommend returning. Great ambience and environment. Opium, Dublin Date Night What I ordered : Pok Pok Chicken Wings (€8) Sweet Potato Fries (€4.50) Green Curry w/ Chicken & Fried Rice (€14.50) Tropical Tuk Tuk(€12) Dark Chocolate Brownie (€8) I've been waiting to go to Opium for the longest time and it did not disappoint! So we sat up at the Botanical Garden which was beautiful. We went for the Pok Pok Chicken Wings and Sweet Potato Fries as our starters. Delicious. The fries came with a Red Curry Aioli side dip which worked great with them (and the chicken wings too lol). The chicken wings were great too! They were filled with a lot of flavour and served with a ranch dip. Although it went well with the ranch dip, we both preferred the curry dip with the wings. The green curry is already spicy having 3 chilies next to it on the menu, but when the server asked if I would like it even spicer I said why not and absolutely regret nothing. The curry was packed with flavour too and perfectly spiced. The only small downfall was I almost forgot I was eating a chicken curry and not a vegetable curry. There were about 3 tiny little pieces of chicken in there. So my little advice for Opium would be to add a bit more chicken please The Tropical Tuk Tuk y'allll! And I know you're eyeing that lovely tropical-looking drink in the tall glass but nope that isn't it. The clear one in that little cup was a delightful surprise. I think I may have visibly frowned when the server brought over this drink because she had to quickly explain that despite the appearance it was really nice and she was right! If you're into coconut & tropical flavoured drinks, this is for you! Nothing about this was overpowering and the flavours complemented each other perfectly. The chocolate brownie was nice too. I do enjoy nuts in my food but for this brownie, it just wasn't doing anything for either of us. But we simply pushed them to the side and continued enjoying our dessert. Would I return? After a long day of touring, my wife was craving Vietnamese food. I found that this place was open late so we trekked on over. When we got to the door it seemed like a club with bouncers and all. We were in shorts and tshirts since we had just came from a day of hiking. Luckily, they still let us in to dine. The vibe is very bar/club like, so we were skeptical about the quality of the food. After looking over the menu we realized it was more of a Vietnamese/Thai fusion restaurant. We ordered the prawn tom yum, calamari, and prawn drunken noodles. Everything came out fairly quickly. The tom yum was very flavorful and packed with lots of prawns. The calamari was seasoned and fried perfectly. Finally, the drunken noodles was a huge serving sized and provided a solid kick of spice. Finally got a chance to dine at long bookmarked restaurant. The place is gorgeous. Filled with East Asia character. A mixture of Japanese, Thai and more. Like a little art museum - you'll be looking around decorations while waiting for your delicious meal. Menu isn't huge, which isn't a bad thing. Usually smaller menus in restaurants translate into fresh and not frozen food. Was watching Gordon Ramsey too much haha. Staff is at best. They were incredibly competent, helpful, friendly and professional. Except for when waiter forgot that I've ordered a cocktail and had to remind him about it. This happens, it's okay. One small silly thing caught my attention. Mens toilet door needs to be pushed to get in, but pull to get out. I'm saying this because I had ribs and I like to eat them with my bare hands and it would make more sense to had push out door. Food was great. Cocktails were delicious. Desert was yummy. Wooooow. So I only went here for cocktails, but they were STUNNING. The best one by a long shot was the Passion Fruit & Lychee Merangue Martini. Refer to my photos - it is literally a cake in a glass. Vodka, lychee liquor, lemon juice and sugar, all topped off with a passion fruit meringue. Sweet mother. It's so good. I can't explain how good. Then there was the Opium Tea Service which comes in an Oriental stone teapot with little cups. It's basically a sh#iteload of Hennessy with some other stuff thrown in like orange flower water, ice, and green tea syrup. They also put a slice of lemon in your cup with some green tea that's been burned into it. I ended up just getting a new clean cup, as the overall cocktail was fairly sharp, so adding some extra lemon to it was too much. Also the tea had started floating around the cup which was a little off-putting! The cocktails aren't cheap - all in around the tenner mark. But to be honest, I feel if they're made that well, and have enough booze in them, it can be justified. The decor is really special - very opulent and striking, and I absolutely loved the massive bar in the middle. We sat there and the barmen made our cocktails right in front of us, chatting us through the whole lot. I love this idea of sitting at the bar if I'm there with maybe one other person. It kinda feels like you've got the best seats in town. I can see myself coming back here, time and time again, spending lots of money I don't have! read more

I have been to Opium on numerous occasions and cannot say i have had a bad experience. The food i have had has not been anything special. It is not that it is not nice but i wouldn't be running back for it. Though i did have a really good chocolate brownie with peanut butter cream. Need to try it again before i make my full mind up! The cocktails are what makes opium stand out. One i really like is the mango mojito. But go on have some fun and try a few! The bar tends to be very busy but the staff get to you as quick as they can and are always friendly and accommodating. They seem like they actually want to make a great cocktail and have a passion for what they do. So delicious! The food is amazing, gorgeous place, loved the cocktail, which is a surprise because I'm never into cocktails. A bit expensive but was very happy with the portions, dishes are presented nicely but that didn't take away from the amount of food you get. The crab cakes were good, didn't taste much like crab, but the prawn chips were perfection, especially with the sauces you get along with them. The Cashew Chicken was fab. something I could only dream of cooking myself, tons of flavor, perfectly seasoned, just the right amount of heat; miles away from the bulk of Asian cuisine I've had in the past (not overly salty, spicy or oily). We had the brownie for dessert (barely had room for it), it was fairly small but we enjoyed it. I really loved the Sex in the Forest, a towering cocktail, super fresh and delicious! It definitely made me want to try another next time I'm there. The ambiance is deceiving, it's a beautiful restaurant with lots of candles that makes it feel like the perfect date night spot, but while it tries to be chic and romantic, the noise level is that of a club. I might sound like an old lady but the music is very loud, which is annoying when you want to actually talk to your date. This place very much wants to be a super-chic, modern restaurant but needs to pick between that and the bar scene. The food and cocktails are both top notch, so they definitely have the chops to be either, but right now they are stuck somewhere in between. Went here for dinner last night with friends, having been here a few times for work functions in the past. As a local to the area, I have to say the restaurant at opium is seriously one of the most underrated restaurants along the Camden mile. First, the setting in the restaurant is really, really, lovely. But let's get to the food. My friends and I came here pretty famished and out for a good feed and they did not disappoint. We started with gyozas for a starter. Now, I am a huge gyoza enthusiast. I seek them out anywhere they are on offer in Dublin. They're my favourite thing ever, and.... These were hands down the best gyozas I've had in Dublin. Yes, I called it. The best. Good variety too with 3 different options - pork, shrimp and mushroom. The mushroom gyozas were particularly divine. Onto the main. I ordered a beef dish, forgot the name of it, but it was also delicious. My friends ordered Singapore noodles and other dishes and all were really pleased with their dishes as well. Good portion sizes too. So, desserts. We ordered both the crème brulé and the panacotta. Neither were your standard. They came with coconut and passionfruit and all sorts of delicious things. They were heavenly, truly. Lastly, and I don't know if they do this every night, but we were there on a Wednesday night and they were doing 2 for 1 cocktails which work out at 5.50 each. Bargain! My cocktail was quite novel and came in a takeout container. It was delicious. So really, on the food and drink side I cannot fault them at all. On the service side, it took ages for the waiter to come and take our order, but having said that once we ordered the meals came out very quick, which was great. My friends and I all left super impressed with our meals, and that's rare. Will definitely dine here again. If only for the desserts alone. read more

Yummy, unusual cocktails and delicious food. I also really enjoyed the starters. We sampled the fishcakes (perfect amount of zesty lime on these bad boys), chicken satay (I would eat the sauce with a spoon if someone gave me a bowl of it) and larb ped (fiery little lettuce wraps of lamb). The Massaman curry was amazing and lots of their mains can be made veggie by adding tofu and veg instead of meat. The cocktails are great and the bar staff were happy to suggest cocktails and create custom ones for us. Even the containers they came in were unique with one coming in an iron teapot (Opium Tea Service) and another in a takeaway food carton with a black bow tied around it. I had the mango mojito and thought it was really refreshing. Perfect for a hot summer's day. The decor was very tastefully done. Loved the lighting and the bar. Will be back! read more

I've been a number of times now and I can safely say I like Opium a lot. The first visit for a lunch my main was a little disappointing, I ordered Shaking Beef and the beef was indeed fine. But the dish on a whole was a bit bland on this occasion. The vegetable spring rolls for a starter were excellent though. As they were again on my second visit, but we got a tasting platter as a starter on this occasion (as part as the Dine In Dublin week menu). All the starters I tasted were delicious. Crab cakes, chicken satay, pork & prawn won ton, curry samosas.... yum yum. For a main course I ordered the Beef Chilli with fried rice and it was excellent, really tasty. The beef was so tender. I opted for a glass of prosecco from the dessert menu instead of an actual dessert dish. All this was 25 EUR for all three courses. I did order a glass of white wine to go with the meal, the Terra Ligeira Sauvignon Blanc for 6.25 EUR. It was a nice understated wine. I was delighted to see that they have craft beer as well as main stream beer on their menu. They also have what looked to be a wonderful cocktail list. On my third visit I had a chance to try a cocktail, I went for the Pegu Club, a classic gin cocktail. It was delicious, so good I ordered a second. Of the other cocktails I sampled, I was impressed. At 9.90 EUR for mine its really good value for money. Again on this visit because of the number of our group, there was a set menu with sharing starters, this cost 28 EUR, but this ended up including a glass of prosecco as well as the three course meal. After looking back at the menu we were emailed, the prosecco wasn't meant to be an extra but a dessert option, but Opium honoured the request for it as an extra without question - how nice! The starters and main were exactly the same as I remembered from my previous visit, really good. The only disappointment was the dessert, I order the ice cream bowl and I didn't like two of the three flavours - mango sorbet and banana ice cream. I probably wouldn't have ordered if I knew before hand what I would be getting, but I didn't ask. The staff are nice and when we first arrived were falling over themselves to help us. Again through out the meal, very attentive and were more than happy to process 3+ cards being offered as a payment. And thinking back on it, the food was served up really quickly for the amount of folk we had at our table. I will definitely go back to Opium and next time I might try the dim sum tapas, they look great. read more

My first experience with Opium was at an office party they catered. It was a selection of their starters, and I really enjoyed it, but didn't give it much thought. I went back for dinner one night because a friend was raving about their cocktails. And they were right! They're absolutely perfect, and there's a pretty big selection of them, so you can just pick your poison of choice. The food is marvelous. That catering did not do it justice, it is gorgeous. I've had duck, chicken and lamb dishes, all cooked to perfection. Be careful about the little peppers they throw in there though, they're hot and they really sneak into your fork! I've since been back for the lunch special, 14 euros for 2 courses or 16 for 3 is great value for the food you're getting. read more

My new all-time favourite place for cocktails in Dublin... maybe Ireland, maybe the world, I'm not sure. Seriously though, I am beyond impressed with this place, everything it has to offer is just perfect. I came here for the first time with the lovely Emily on my elite initiation and had two passion fruit and lychee meringue martinis. I cannot put into words how delicious they are, you just have to go and try them. Since then, I have come back about five times, always getting the same thing except for once. I was forced to try something different so I asked the barman for advice and he made me my very own original cocktail that tasted almost as good, almost, as my usual. The bartenders here are so accommodating and seem to genuinely really enjoy what they're doing. At a standard tenner each, they all seem happy to whip you up something special if you've gone through the whole menu already. They are also complete showmen, so I'd recommend positioning yourself at the bar to watch them work. The food, I was disappointed to find, was not on the cheap side for dinner. BUT THEN... TEN EURO LUNCH DEAL. Every main course a tenner, or else two courses for fourteen, three for two euro more. I got the lamb massaman and shared this and a beef stirfry with my girlfriend. They were both delicious, the meat in each was some of the most tender I've had. Thankfully, the portions are huge and a big plus is they serve brown rice. If you didn't want a whole meal, and cocktails were sending you a little too far along, there is a huge range of dim sum priced at two euro a piece. I would recommend the scallop ceviche, the pork bun and the duck salad, but it all looks amazing to be honest. Overall, I really couldn't recommend Opium highly enough. Dim lights and good music (or maybe it's just the alcohol), the atmosphere is amazing, whether you're with a group or wanting something slightly more romantic, I will be back tomorrow. Or today. Don't be foolish and leave this place on the long finger! I had a meal with friends here on a Friday evening, make sure and book a table well beforehand! This is possibly one of the most trendiest restaurants I've been to in ages. It's kind of a mix between a funky cocktail bar and a restaurant. On one side is the cocktail bar and the other the sitting area for food! There is a good atmosphere too with the music just at that right sound level (shows age!). Staff are quick and sharp just like the food! If modern Asian/Thai/Vietnamese is your style then you will love it here! Food comes out quickly and when it arrives you will be blown away! They have a really nice selection of wines and beers to choose from too. After your feed you can head upstairs to the cocktail bar for some amazing cocktails! These guys know what they are doing! Again, if you're late heading upstairs then expect to stand as most tables were reserved by the time we got up there. All in all, it's hard not to like this place. I really really want to give Opium five stars because of the amazing beef rendang which I am craving every day since I've had it, but the staff in this place are just slacking and I can't help but feel frustrated with them because if they paid attention to the tables like they're supposed to, then it would be five stars hands down. After a long sight seeing tour we visited the bar. At first we were very surprised when we walked in the botanical garden/ bar. It was quite in comparison to the loud city and just a cool and relaxing atmosphere. We have had a couple cocktails and they all were great, the barkeeper definitely know their craft. I love it here! This is such a cool spot. Beautiful balcony area indoors and it's very sophisticated with a generally great crowd. I've only been at night so am trying to find the time to get in here at lunch time because the food looks amazing! They have fantastic musicians and DJs in here on occasion for nights too and are well worth checking out. The place is nicely bedecked, dimly lit with a cool horse shoe bar in the middle and LOUD... boy is it loud. ...but the noise is coming from a lot of very happy diners, and this is no bad thing. The reason for the noise is the brilliant atmosphere, very efficient and friendly staff and of course, the really quite excellent food. We started the meal with prawn crackers and Vietnamese Rolls which were light and fresh and tasty. Wifey had the special for the night which was sea bas, it was likewise excellent. I had the red duck curry with fried rice. It was spectacular, blew me away!. Truth be told we could have done without the starters, the mains were big enough to hold their own and as a result there was no space for dessert or even a 2nd bottle of wine - which we would normally have had. My friends and I wanted to go dancing. This place is awful and overpriced. There's always a queue outside, you go in and it's over crowded everywhere. The music is ridiculously loud. It's also fully techno, which I wish I knew before coming in because I would have just stayed outside. When you first walk in, you think it looks different from what it used to be (The village) but then you get to the dance floor.... Still looks EXACTLY like the village. You took over the place, changed the name and the theme, make some effort on making it look different maybe? We were harassed by people and decided to leave. With an up close screen shot (I don't know how I didn't notice the video camera) in their website's promotional video, it actually looks like I have shares in this place, but last Tuesday was actually only my 2nd time having a meal in Opium. I failed to get a reservation for NYE; trying to book for 5 people the day before was always a bad idea but having loved it on my first visit last December I was dying to return so Yelp Foodie Club was a perfect excuse! Despite my fear of food envy, I didn't re-order the amazing shaking beef from my previous visit & went for the chilli beef. It was delicious, and cooked medium rare...this is definitely not the norm in other Asian restaurants in Dublin so most welcomed! I couldn't finish the main, probably shouldn't have had so much of the shared platter starters, which were tasty but were never going to be the highlight of the evening! It's all about the mains really when you're on a special group menu. Great coeliac menu too..I didn't need it but just an observation! Having died a death after previous booze only cocktail visits to Opium, I stayed clear of the extensive & quirky menu for this visit (when they say there's chilli in the cocktail; they mean it) and opted for my old faithful Malbec, for sensible me on a school night but did have slight cocktail envy...with mini tea-pots, takeaway boxes and umbrellas taking over the table! Opium know how to do cocktails...finally a cocktail menu in Dublin that can probably justify their prices! Not quite the boppin atmosphere of a weekend night, when the Dj kicks off & it becomes a top weekend night spot but a perfect spot for a week night group booking. Bants all round! This review comes with a 'don't go here to eat on a busy night' warning for those who want to avoid too much noise. For you, this is a three-star experience. For others, it may be a four-star one. After all, with Opium, you have to know what you are dealing with. On a busy night the restaurant which is also a bar will be loud, so for those of us who don't want to shout to be heard, or crane our necks to hear, this may not be the place for you. If however you're young, of pristine hearing, and love loud cocktail bars, this is definitely the place for you - and they rustle up a mean cocktail. I'm not sure why it's called Opium, as there's nothing relaxation-inducing or deathly about the place, and as far as I could see there was no one dealing H, but hey, it sounds cool. It's Thai cuisine, and if you are a party of four, ask for the booth, it's slightly aside from the bustle of the place and therefore possible to hear and be heard. On a quieter evening, no doubt it's all much more low key, but we were there in the pre-Xmas madness. Our Latin American waitress was wonderful - really friendly and attentive despite no doubt being run off her feet - and all round the staff atmosphere was nice (no bartender sulking at producing a pint of cider instead of a Tiger beer - that's the price of inaudibility I guess). Food was pretty decent, standard fare cuisine of its kind, in generous portions (though a deadly overdose was just narrowly avoided on the dessert) and reasonably priced. read more

Hmm, Opium is certainly more a cocktail bar with food than restaurant with a great cocktail selection, and it suffers for it. A large group of us, the Yelp foodie club numbering 18, came in for our 7pm booking last night and were seated at the bar, where we remained - in the practically empty restaurant - until 7:45. The bar staff were lovely, I couldn't find fault with either their attitudes or their cocktail skills, and spent some time pouring over the menu, I in the end asked the bar manager his recommendation and was glad I did, the Wilde Honey Porter sounded on the menu like it shouldn't work, but it does, and how! Salty and sweet and refreshing it's certainly one I will have again! They got back a star purely for the quirky presentations and high quality of the cocktails, I was dangerously close to a 2 star review.... We were eventually seated and were served a mixed sharing platter, myself and my friend asked for vegetarian versions which were no problem and I thoroughly enjoyed it all. Spring rolls, a samosa style item and mango and chili wraps with a selection of dips, the satay was just divine. For a main I went for the Malay Laska, which was a mild dish served with savoury donuts. I happily munched away, thinking that they donuts must be buried under the sauce and veg, but they weren't! Not one :( I asked our waiter who just said they were out, no apology, no concern and no good reason he could not have mentioned this at the time of ordering!!!I would likely have gone for something different if I had known as I wanted to try my something different for the day! Desert was a choice between sorbets and ice creams or passion fruit meringue. I went for the latter, which was was, in fact, strawberry and raspberry. No logic to it at all, if something is unavailable, be honest with the punters, give them the chance to make informed decisions, its really not that hard lads! Also, red lights in the ladies toilets? It's getting 4 stars but really it's at least a 4.5. I've been here twice, and really pleased with it both times. It has a nice ambience, especially with the bar at the back. The food is excellent. I highly recommend the Mekong Duck - very tasty! The service is prompt and the staff friendly. It's a nice spot with great food. I'll be back again! read more

Went here for #dinner - first time actually in the restaurant and not only upstairs in bar and club. The food was good, varied ingredients, portions are quite big (good as they are expensive compared to lunch menu) and the prawn crackers for appetiser are fantastic! You pay the style of the place, but I have to admit, they have style - in food and design! The service is very attentive, staff is looking after the tables and any needs - only downside is that on evenings at the weekend, you can only book for 2h and will be asked to leave. We actually already got asked to leave 10min to 9, after 1.50h. The bar was quite busy and we didn't have any area to go to besides of the winter garden area..plus nobody really cares. It kinda seemed like we payed the bill, now off you go and do whatever... I am giving 3stars as there is still room to round up the experience. read more

A group of 8 of us ate here last night. Everything from the food to the service was absolutely amazing!! We all got the early bird menu, you had access to the entire menu and had two courses for 22.95! The food was truly delicious, I got the panko prawns and the Singapore noodles, both were decent size leftovers. The staff were super attentive and really friendly! Overall great experience and would recommend to any of my friends. The interior was also really nice! read more

I absolutely love this place and they serve some damn tasty gluten free grub! First thing, they have an amazing atmosphere: it's dark and sultry inside, then they go and seduce you with the food and cocktails! They've an open kitchen so you can see the chef work. Personally, I love this because the chopping board's fascinate me... Well, not the board but the actual chopping without losing fingers! The menu has a great selection for the gluten free diner. The "C" is clearly marked. 9 out of the 12 starters were available and 9 out of the 15 mains. Only 3 out of the 10 sides are marked and none of the desserts but there are actually options so do check with your server. As a gluten free diner you always need to tell your server. Some of the "C" markings are indication that the dish is adaptable! "CA" would be handy to have on the menu but I've only noticed that on the Brasserie Sixty6 menu. I beg you: tell your server so that everyone is on the same page! We got some sparkling water for the table, which came in their own bottle. It's their own sparkling water on tap. I'm not normally a huge fan of sparkling water but whatever they do to this makes it quite tasty! We were asked if we wanted some prawn crackers brought to the table while we were waiting on our meal. I was quite hesitant: I don't have a good history with them but Clinton, a manager, advised that they're made from tapioca flour and therefore gluten free. I didn't actually have them but it's nice to have the option! On the starter menu there is an option that I really had to query. The Vietnamese Rolls. They're actually made using rice paper! Clinton was extremely helpful throughout our meal and explained so much of the menu. Top staff here! Our starters arrived and although lemongrass chicken was good, really good, I was coveting my other halfs BBQ ribs... They literally melted off the bone and tasted like heaven. I admit it: I was stealing from his plate. A little... OK... A lot! They tenderize their meat with guava juice. It's melt in the mouth good. On another note, I absolutely love the plates. They have a textured surface that prevents the sauce from sloshing around the plate. For mains, we both ordered curry: Claypot Lamb and the Red Curry Duck. I hadn't quite stopped raving in my head about the ribs. I was not expecting the duck to be as tender as them, but it melted off the bone, just as the ribs did! I was in food heaven. The only slight issue we had was that the lamb was a touch on the salty side for our taste, but overall it was a freaking amazing meal! I never eat a whole dessert in a restaurant. I just can't handle it after having a scrumptious dinner. If I order one it normally means I haven't eaten enough of my dinner! We share. It's a great compromise! I was a little disappointed with the lack of markings on the dessert menu, but, again, Clinton double checked. He knew off the top of his head that I could have the Panna Cotta, but I was too stuffed for all that creaminess! We could have the "flourless" brownie... it was made of eggs, chocolate, sugar, and peanut stuffs! No glutens here! This is a definite "Date-night" restaurant. The one you chose when you want to spoil yourself or your other half. Not a regular Saturday night haunt. However, they do have a "Taste of Opium" menu for groups. At €25 a head you are not going to go wrong with the food. There are three really nomtastic gluten free options for mains. You have to check the starter menu to see which starts are gluten free but there are definitely options for you! In summary, this place is beautiful in terms of venue and food. It's had an amazing transformation since "The Village" days into a must-eat restaurant and cocktail bar. Their cocktails are lovely and full of flavour but one or two and I tap out. They're expensive but tasty! You don't just get the taste with these cocktails: you get service and flamboyance. Each cocktail is served in it's own style glass and is painstakingly made. One even comes in a take-away container! read more
