Pad Thai with pork
Dana A.

The food was great. The Gui Chai came first and made us anxious for the incoming dishes. We weren't disappointed. The Tom Ka made us sit back and say, "ah, yes." The Larb and the Pad Thai were very good, too. They have an area that displays traditional Thai items and wall decorations also add to the ambiance. The only negative, which isn't much, is that our server made us wait a bit longer than what I think should be normal. Keep in mind that at no point of my career did I work in a restaurant, so what's normal for me may not be the standard. Nevertheless, I'm a very patient person. Despite any negative, I will gladly return for more. Not only was the good delicious, but the total bill was much lower than we expected. I don't get to Madison often but this restaurant makes me want to find any reason to travel here.

We ordered chicken satay, and dumplings as appetizers. They were delicious. The chicken satay was so juicy. I think it needed the peanut sauce. The chicken itself was not heavily marinated. I guess it was probably you had to it with the sauce. The dumplings were fried very well. There was also an option for you to steam the dumplings instead of fry. As for entrees, I got number 45. My boyfriend got fried rice with pork and his friend got number 41. 41 and 45 were curries. The curries were very creamy due to coconut milk. Our friend asked for spicy level 3 but I think they forgot adding the hot sauce because it was not spicy at all for him. He still enjoyed the curry though. The fried rice was nice as well. As for my order, number 45, it was spicy. I got level 2. I could tolerate it but it was definitely spicier than our friend's curry. I got catfish as the protein. I would not recommend catfish at all because I think they used frozen catfish because you could smell it. The curry had great flavor though. Definitely will come back other dishes.

I wasn't overly impressed by my experience here but it was enough to satisfy the thai craving, particularly in Madison. We were served fairly quickly - the restaurant wasn't crowded on a Friday evening. We ordered the crab rangoon as an appetizer and the pad see ew with tofu and fried rice with shrimp as our entrees. The crab rangoon was well worth the price, we got 3 massive pieces and each was filled with a looot of cream cheese!! The dipping sauce was some sort of house made sauce, not the normal sweet chili that I was expecting. The pad see ew was okay - not my favorite esp since I prefer my noodles to be saucier. But the tofu was done really well! I preferred the fried rice over the noodles tbh and felt like it had more flavor in each bite. The shrimp was plentiful, they def didn't skimp out on that. It did take a while for our server to give us our check before we could leave but overall was satisfied with my experience here.

Delivery Review! I recently ordered from Sa-Bai Thong to deliver to the University Hospital up the street. I placed an ordered online and even though they said earliest deliveries would arrive at 6PM, when I called they were very accommodating to come at 5:45PM since I had a meeting. The hospital can be very complicated, but when driver called, he was super polite and was able to find his way. The food was wrapped very well. All plastic containers and for soups, the containers are wrapped in another plastic bag. Prices are very reasonable too. Food: I ordered the papaya salad, pork larb, and Tom Ka with chicken, all in fire spice level (there are 4 or 5 levels total). All were super delicious! My favorite was the pork larb hands down. The pork was juiced up with citrus-tangy goodness and the fire heat was totally there - I was sniffling and doing the mouth motions, 100% worth! I can't forget the onions and other herbs that really bring it all together into every delicious bite. Would order this for lunch everyday if I could!

Although basic of me to get the Pad Thai, I still enjoyed it very much! The taste was pretty darn good (4/5) but the portion size was perfect (5/5). It was just enough to fulfill my hunger but not reach to the point of being too full where I couldn't walk/need to take home. Furthermore, I think our server was the owner? Not quite sure but she was so friendly and made the experience so much better (5/5). Lovely ambience and space (4.5/5). Overall I gotta give it a 5/5 for being a wonderful experience for me in Madison! Definitely will come back once more before I leave. P.S. my friend had one of the curries (I forgot which) with coconut milk and it was sooooo good... I might get that next time too

I saw that it had good reviews so gave it a shot tonight, 06/23/2021 @19:00. Pros: good prices, delicious food. Cons: wait time for any kind of service was awful, the waitress/hostess had such an attitude that it overshadowed the experience. She made faces behind other customers backs, after she took our orders (food was delivered by the cook) and she only checked on our table once at the end to give us a check but forgot that we ordered desert a while ago and needed the only water refill that we got. Honestly one of the worst servers I've had and from what I heard from the other customers, they were not happy about it either. Truth is, the food was decent but with the service being as incredibly awful as it was, I'm sure the food can be comparable to any other Thai place in Madison. I won't be going here again.

This isn't my absolute favorite Thai restaurant in Madison, but I've never had a bad experience here. The food is always tasty, and so many options sound delicious, I have a hard time choosing what to get! My family loves Thai food, and we enjoy Sa-Bai Thong a lot! I'd recommend any of their curries. I will say, the portions aren't huge for the price. However, I think it's worth a visit.

Among their other items, their mango sticky rice is AMAZING. Having origins from Southeast Asia as well, this food cart has done me a great service of bringing me closer to home especially on the toughest days. In addition to that, the woman who works tirelessly in the cart has recognized me and we've had many familiar conversations. I'm amazed that she can continue to shine as radiantly as she does despite always working so hard! People might complain about the wait, which I understand, but why don't you try rolling a fat spring roll seamlessly without tearing the delicate rice paper and see how long that would take you? I have mad respect for the incredible woman who is in their cart throughout the week, creating tasty and authentic lunch and in a quick and efficient manner as it can for a fresh spring roll. If you're trying to get food from the food carts on the State Street Mall, you won't regret this one, even if you have to wait a little bit. Luang Prabang, you have never failed me!

The people working at the cart were really nice and accommodating, and were happy to modify any dish they could for ingredients that you can't or don't eat. The first thing I tried was the squash curry, which was a really generous portion size for $7, consisting of rice topped with a rich coconut milk-based curry filled with chicken, kabocha, and zucchini. It was really filling and tasty. But the real winner from the cart after a few visits was the avocado spring roll, which was $3.50 and the size of a burrito. It was basically a giant fresh roll filled with avocado, lettuce, cabbage, mint, rice noodles, cucumber, carrot, and peanut sauce. We got the medium spicy sauce, and it had a fantastic kick to it. Still can't believe something so large was only a few dollars, as it was such a great deal. Definitely worth trying this cart if you're looking for something to eat on campus.

The whole seating process seemed incredibly inefficient. We asked if we could at least order appetizers at the bar while we waited and were told no because we were waiting for a table, which was frustrating. Service somehow managed to be both inattentive and overbearing. After we were finally seated, we waited close to 30 minutes while trying to order. Once the food arrived, though, our waiter was suddenly at the table every five minutes asking if everything tasted good (it did not). The menu is enormous, to the point that I genuinely don't understand how a kitchen could execute that many dishes well, especially when so many require different ingredients and preparation. Unfortunately, the food pretty much confirmed that suspicion. The curry was watery and almost completely flavorless. The Pad Thai tasted like ketchup. The duck was poorly cooked. The spring roll with an egg roll inside was tasty, but there wasn't enough filling and it was the only thing we particularly enjoyed. I don't mind waiting for good food, and I don't mind a restaurant being busy. But waiting three times longer than quoted, watching tables sit empty, being unable to order anything while waiting, and then getting mediocre food made this a pretty frustrating experience. I wouldn't come back.

Hot-N-Spicy is one of my all time favorite restaurants which remains a cultural culinary gem!…read moreMadison, WI is beyond blessed to have Hot-N-Spicy which is the most authentic SouthEast Asian restaurant in the Madison area that shares the culture of countries like Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam with the community through their incredible delicious food/cuisine! They truly live up to their name "Hot-N-Spicy". The cultural significance of the chili pepper often represents hospitality, warmth, and resilience! They bring all the spice and don't hold back! If you are not used to spice/spicy hot dishes, I suggest you start at level one spice and work your way up. They will ask you on dishes made with chili peppers what spice level you want 1-4 and can even make it hotter also! Hot-N-Spicy is genuinely unique because they offer Issan food dishes and flavors that is uniquely from the Issan/Isan Northeast region of Thailand that is heavily influenced by Lao and Cambodian flavors with the use of heat, fresh herbs, and use of fish sauce that brings different flavors different from other regions of Thailand. Hot-N-Spicy used to be located in the back of the Viet Hoa Market. It is now located next door from the market in a larger space in the same strip mall that allows for a more comfortable sit-down seating experience of a full restaurant. I have tried almost everything on their menu and have never been disappointed! For appetizers, I love their angel wings which are deboned chicken wings stuffed with chicken, carrot, and bean thread noodles fried to pure crispy perfection! Their most popular selling appetizers are their amazingly addictively delicious crab rangoons! Their chicken satay is also a must try! I also recommend trying their beef jerky which is so delicious, it often sells out quickly during the day! Their main entrees are so outstanding, it is hard to order one entree! My absolute favorite that I recommend is their steak Laab which is the best Laab I have had in Madison! It is heavily influenced with Isaan flavors/culture with minced beef, tripe, red onion, cilantro, mint, fresh lime juice, rice powder, fish sauce and scallions. I love the beef steak Laab because it is unlike anything you will ever taste with so much flavor from a combination of flavors with hint of sour with the lime, salty/umami/pungence from the fish sauce, balanced with refreshing different herbs, texture with the tripe, while the toasted rice powder gives this dish a tiny bit of crunch/texture that gives a subtle nutty flavor! This dish is a minced meat salad traditionally eaten with your hands and sticky rice/vegetables like cucumber. I also really enjoy their Pad Thai, Pho, and Crispy Noodle Lad Na! Your visit wouldn't be complete without quenching your thirst with either their Thai iced coffee/tea! Hot-N-Spicy remains at the top of my list for Thai/Lao cuisine! I ordered level 1 spice, and it was the perfect amount of heat without overwhelming the dish. The homemade curry paste, coconut milk, basil, peppers, and jasmine rice came together beautifully. It's also been great to see this local business grow. What started as a takeout spot inside Viet Hoa Market has expanded into a larger space on Monona Drive, and it's easy to see why.
