Amazing old school diner comfort food! Some times a long wait but totally worth it! Get the tuna melt read more

Great place for a classic tuna melt. Rye bread was toasted well, and the cheese really balanced out the tuna. The pickle was also very much appreciated to cut through all the richness. Came on a weekend during the heat wave and there was still a line, but we were seated pretty quickly. Service was fast, you sit down, have a few moments to decide and they take your order. Since we were two people, we got sat at the bar, which was fun to get up close to how the restaurant is run. It definitely has a lively and active atmosphere. read more

Five stars for the taste of the food, five stars for the service I received, three stars for the overall price of the food, and three stars for the overall portions of everything. Which yeah, all balances out to a perfect four. So there. The food is delicious. I got three items, a matzo ball soup, a tuna melt, and a potato pancake, and went 3 for 3. The matzo ball soup could use more than just a matzo ball and one small carrot, but it tastes great. Everything else tastes simple, effective, and delicious. I received first rate service. Even though I arrived during a lull between lunch and dinner, I was immediately greeted, offered a menu, and a glass of water without having to ask for it. The entire staff is super friendly and engaging. It really made for a fun experience to eat here. Now for the dirt. The portions are small. Nothing is made for a hungry eater. Be prepared to spend a lot if you play a sport, because one item is not going to do it. This is where being in the Flatiron District shows, because these prices are high for the food I received. $40 (with tip) is just too much, even if the food is outstanding. The restaurant is real close to the Flatiron Building, Madison Square Park, and the 23rd Street Station on the R and W trains. It is also not too far from the 23rd Street Station on the 6 train. Maybe I should not be a party pooper and just say the food is awesome and leave it at that. Then you would be missing out on the little things, like why your bank account got a little skinnier, and why you got skinnier after just one meal at this little luncheonette. -- They are one restaurant They are tuna melts They are three latkes They are for safe keeping read more

I like milkshakes particularly strawberry ones. Having read Dorie Greenspan liking the one here I was keen to try it out for myself. It was creamy, flavorful and a treat to look at. Liz gave be a counter seat and Gavin made the drink. A puff of whipped cream with a cherry on top made the shake look pretty. I sipped slowly and found this to be a delicious smooth drink. read more

The tuna melt is what I came for and it was pretty solid! The bread was super crispy and not too thick which was amazing. The cheese was melted and the tuna was creamy. I would prefer a bit more flavor to the tuna but overall it was great. I'd give the tuna melt a 7.8/10. Fries were also really good! Love how they're circular and crispy! Service was good! They are working hard so it felt a bit rushed but totally understandable. Ambiance is super fun retro diner/deli vibes. Love sitting at the counter watching my food get made! read more

I come here for the BEC, and while the service has always been pretty awful--mainly because no one ever comes back to check on you after you've ordered--I've usually overlooked it because I really like the BEC. But today's BEC was honestly the saddest thing ever. For $12, it was an absolute rip-off. The portion was disappointing, and it just wasn't worth anywhere near what I paid. I've overlooked the bad service because the food was good enough to make up for it, but after today, I won't be going back. $12 for a disappointing BEC is just not it. read more

Went to S&P for an early lunch. Was a great experience, wasn't busy during this time and was seated immediately. Staff was nice and the inside was clean, a very classic diner look. Tried the turkey sandwich, pastrami, and latkes. I think my favorite was the turkey sandwich, absolutely delicious. The cole slaw with it really balanced it out and was refreshing. Their pastrami is definitely worth the order, a nice thicker cut style. Latkes were great as well, nicely toasted with a few side sauces. Would suggest going to S&P. read more

Came here in the morning on a weekday and there was no wait to be seated. There's a line of bar seats in the front and then some tables in the back. The bar seating was more crowded than the table seating. I ordered the pastrami on rye with mustard. It was my first time trying a pastrami sandwich, so I don't have anything to compare it to. But I thoroughly enjoyed it! The portion size was pretty big (for me) and the sandwich was overall very filling. I liked the thick cuts of pastrami. My table also got the latkes to share and we all liked that. I want to come back to try the matzo ball soup! read more

Returned on a Monday at 12:44 PM during Xmas week. My boyfriend and I got in line and chose to wait for a table (vs counter) and sat at 1:15 PM - not bad at all. Counter would have been even faster. Matzo ball soup was good, but I prefer B&H or Katz's. Chicken salad club was phenomenal and the onion rings remain perfect. 5 stars forever. read more

The line moves really and the food and service is great. We shared two different sandwiches and they were both very different, but good. I probably enjoyed the S&P regular more than the Mel sandwich, but if I went back, I'd just go for the classic Rueben. $20 for the size of the sandwich felt steep, but we were all willing to pay for it, so I guess they know what they're doing. read more

You snooze, you lose. I love old buildings, old restaurants, old everything. S&P is an old diner, about 96 years old at the time of our visit. It is small and skinny and they have an old counter with old stools. There is nothing fancy about the place at all and that is how it should be. Unfortunately for us, we arrived about an hour and a half before closing and, to the restaurant's credit, were immediately informed by the hostess that they were out of both pastrami and corned beef. The server also let us know. I wanted pastrami or corned beef, or both, but we were starving, so we stayed. The turkey Reuben was interesting and not bad at all. The burger was very average. The tuna melt was fine. They make their own syrups here and you should definitely indulge in their delicious (non-alcoholic) drinks. The Cherry Lime Rickey was particularly delicious. If I had been more on the ball, I would have also ordered an egg cream. In all honesty, I did not love the food but I also did not get to try any of their specialty sandwiches. But any place that has been around this long is doing something right and should be appreciated. I would return--earlier, for sure. read more

I came here this past spring to get a pastrami sandwich after seeing Youtube videos like UA Eats speaking highly about this place. Was pretty excited to see how their sandwich would compare to other places in the city. I came around 11am on a Friday morning and it wasn't too crowded, so I easily got a seat at the counter. The place itself has a pretty no-frills, quick diner type of vibe to it. I ordered the pastrami sandwich ($18) and a Dr. Brown's cherry soda, which was around $3 from what I remember. I believe I paid around $25 total including tax / tip. The sandwich struck me as pretty small when I received it. It looked pretty good but it seemed there were only a few pieces of pastrami in there. The sandwich itself was very good though. The pastrami seemed cooked well and had plenty of flavor. The bread seemed pretty fresh. So taste wise, the sandwich lived up to expectations, but I was just disappointed it was so small. There was the option for extra meat at $26, but then the sandwich approaches Katz Deli pricing. The soda was excellent and I made a mental note to get it again later on. Overall, I thought this place was pretty good but overhyped. read more

I came to S&P on a rainy day, and to my surprise, the line was nuts! Very long, down the whole wall from the host to the door. What!? I waited. I had some time as I was waiting on some details from my client. After around 20min I was seated at the counter. Then I ordered a tuna melt with an Arnold Palmer. Waited another 20min for the food and finally I was able to lunch. The kitchen was bustling. They were running around pushing out orders - for diners and to go. They even checked in for a chat with the regulars. My sandwich was chiling on the press for a hot minute.. the tuna melt bread was a bit toasty but not burned. The crunch was nice and the tuna consistency was good. The pickle was great. I also got an Arnold Palmer..it was meh. I get they're trying to stay Classic with the menu but it'd be nice for some craft drinks. Esp less sugary options. I've been here before on a less hectic day and the food was very solid! read more

S&P - Tuna melt (a little too toasty) - Sandwiches Near Me - New York, New York

The New York City diner is a dying breed. S&P is an attempt to save one. Brought to us by the people behind Court Street Grocers, I had high hopes for this retro diner. Arriving near noon on Saturday, S&P was quite busy. When you enter, you will likely be in line on the right side of the restaurant, with the counter directly to your left. Seating is first come, first serve, so do not be surprised if you have to wait. There are tables in the rear for larger groups, but the real S&P experience is at the counter, where you can watch the frantic cooks fry, grill and otherwise prepare meals for the hungry patrons. Upon seating, we examined the menu. There are a variety of NYC diner classics, with both breakfast and lunch options available, perfect for a weekend brunch, or a quick bite on a weekday. On our first visit, my dining partner and I landed on hot dogs for her, a patty melt for myself, a side of fries to split, and a milkshake to share (it felt like a 1950s movie). The food, overall, is lovely. Each dish is a just a bit elevated beyond what you may be accustomed to if you are familiar with NYC diners or lunch counters, and very familiar to anyone who has patronized Court Street Grocers before (you will find a couple of sandwiches from CSG on the menu even). My patty melt was delightful, hitting all the right cheesy and melty and saucy notes you expect from a patty melt, while my date enjoyed her hotdogs throughly (she still raves about them!). The fries are a bit an unusually shaped, and do not come salted, but are otherwise tasty with the liberal application of salt. The milkshake was fantastic, and very rich (things got a bit tense trying to share it, it was so good). Service was generally fairly good, though at times they seem overwhelmed with how busy they are. When you finish up, you pay at the counter, and don't be surprised if you need to recite your order to the cashier. I will certainly be back, though perhaps try to arrive a bit earlier to avoid the line and the rush. Definitely worth trying. read more

Honestly this place is a great diner in the middle of flatiron! Pretty unassuming from the outside but be ready to wait long lines. There is limited seating inside with the vast majority being bar seating and a couple tables in the back. Service was great and quite fast. I ordered the S&P regular and it was pretty good. The bread was soft and buttery and the pastrami was tender and there was a decent amount. Cherry peppers were both sweet and spicy! My only complaint would've been the Russian dressing was a little strong maybe I could've done w a little less. We also got a carrot cake slice which was good too. The cake itself was super moist a with a thin layer of cream cheese frosting but I found it was a little too sweet. No nuts or raisins if that's not your thing! Nothing special though tbh. read more

I had heard that S&P wasn't as good as it used to be, but I was in the area and craving a good Jewish deli sandwich, so we decided to give it a try. The line to sit down the line was long since the place is tiny, so we ordered takeout instead. After nearly 40 minutes, I noticed that people who had ordered well after us were already receiving their food. I finally asked about our order. The response? "Oh! We probably lost your ticket. Can you tell me what you ordered?" What shocked me almost as much as losing the order was how completely unfazed he was. No real apology, no concern--almost as if this happens all the time. Then, somehow, he came back with our bag two minutes later, which means our food had apparently been sitting there for who knows how long. The sandwich that was supposed to be hot was cold, soggy, and inedible. The cold sandwich was also soggy and honestly just gross. Both went straight into the trash. Mistakes happen. What makes this unacceptable is the complete lack of customer service or concern about fixing the mistake. Nobody seemed to care that we had waited 40 minutes for food that had apparently been forgotten and was no longer worth eating. I should have asked for a refund and walked away, but by then we were already late and didn't have time to find something else. $50 literally thrown in the trash. At the very least, I would expect S&P to have the decency to contact me and offer a refund for food we couldn't eat. Unfortunately, based on the level of customer service we experienced, I'm not holding my breath. read more

Great spot in a convenient location. There's usually a line as they don't take reservations, but it moves quickly due to the turnover. Once you're seated (either at their long bar or one of the tables at the back), the staff will take your order quickly. The tuna melt hit the spot! Not too heavy and toasted to perfection. It was even better with some hot sauce. We also loved the pancakes (we got chocolate chips in them). They were topped with salted butter that melted slightly and were a great texture. Only thing I'd avoid is the mushroom barley soup. It was bland and heavy on barley. You're in and out quickly and cost is reasonable. Highly recommend if you're in the area! read more

I had read about this place but never had a chance to try it before. I adore retro restaurants and this is a real throwback Jewish deli with comfortable red leather stool seating at the counter and tables in the back. Friendly efficient service. The best pastrami ever!!! They cut their own bread slices from loaves. They have real chocolate egg creams and matzoh ball soup. Crowded but still found seating. Wheelchair accessible although it's narrow. Definitely recommend. read more

There was a line out the door but I say it moves quick. They do a fair amount of take out orders and I would actually consider that next time. Nearby was an area with outdoor seating. We had the Flat Iron Delight sandwich with pastrami comes with Swiss, Cole slaw and Russian. We asked for it grilled. It was sooo good. I dug into so quick I never got a picture. We also got the potato latkes they were great as well. I think everything is good on this menu. I saw someone's egg salad sandwich and a club looking sandwich they both looked great. I dont think you can go wrong here. I normally dont order tuna melts but they were popular and looked good. The service is great, they accommodate menu requests. You check out at the register and they take cards as well. I would definitely visit again. Nice change of pace from Katz. read more

I had an extraordinary meal that really challenged the way I think about a traditional NYC deli. We decided to order a variety of dishes to share, which turned out to be the perfect approach. It let us experience more without having to commit to just one thing. We tried the knish, chopped liver, latkes, a bowl of pickles, and a Reuben, and finished with a sundae. The knish felt like a true New York staple. The pastry was hot and perfectly cooked, filled with mashed potatoes. It was my first time having it with mustard, and that added something new for me. Latkes are traditionally tied to Hanukkah, but we were happily celebrating all the holidays we've missed together. They came with applesauce and sour cream on the side. They were good, though not the standout of the meal. The chopped liver was my favorite. It was served with rye bread and little pickles instead of the expected saltines, which I didn't mind at all. The hard-boiled eggs were in larger chunks than I'm used to, and the whole dish was rich, flavorful, and absolutely worth the trip on its own. We ordered the Reuben with the sauerkraut on the side since it's not my preference. The corned beef was nicely cut and not piled excessively high, which made it feel like a classic deli sandwich rather than an overstuffed one. For dessert, we had the sundae. It was smaller than expected--less than a full scoop--but still a nice, simple treat to end the meal. Service was attentive, with multiple servers helping throughout, including when we placed a to-go order. In a fun moment, I left behind a few Statue of Liberty ducks, and one of the servers traded me for a little flamingo duck. These foods carry a deep sense of nostalgia, rooted in family traditions, and this meal really captured that feeling. It looked and felt like an old fashioned deli. read more

Old school diner vibes in the old school flat iron district. There was a bit of a wait, but I was seated quickly as a solo dinner at the long counter. Pretty big menu, but I feel like the pastrami or corned beef are necessities. Potato Latkes: Much more exciting than diner fries. It's crispy all around with a little softness in the middle. Goes great the obligatory sour cream and apple sauce on the side. Really love that this is so common here and not a special occasion. The S&P Regular: We've all been brainwashed into having pastrami on rye with mustard! This was eye opening and deprogrammed my world. The pastrami was thick and full of so much flavor. Very meaty! No rye here, but rather a soft white roll that seemed freshly baked (not from a bag pumped with preservatives). And wow, true game changer were all those finely chopped cherry peppers mixed with Russian dressing. I like spicy food and this gave a very satisfying tang. It was just perfect again the rich and fatty pastrami brisket. read more

The place overall wasn't bad and the prices were okay, aside from the matzoh soup, which was the cheapest in the area so that was good. The soup was piping hot! And the matzoh was huge!!! Really good especially for the cold weather. The onion rings were worth the price and didn't feel too greasy but my burger was just a burger nothing else. Had to get in a pastrami sandwich on my recent visit to NYC. Saw this spot was highly rated and near my hotel, so my nephew and I headed over. The front is small--blink and you might miss it! We went in and grabbed the last remaining two-top at the back (there was a line all down the wall when we left!) Loved the old school charm. Our waitress was friendly. The egg cream was on point. Bowl of pickles was so-so... and the fries were little discs. Pastrami sandwich was good, but was small and light on meat. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. This was our second attempt to come here as the first time the line was super long. We did wait a little bit but luckily seemed to beat the line that was present when we left. Grabbed counter seats which I actually preferred to the seats in the back. - Tuna melt: I quite enjoyed this, more than I thought I would. Sure the cheese could have been melted a bit more but the bread was perfectly crisp and I enjoyed the tuna. - Pastrami reuben: I mean the pastrami was fine and the bread again was good. Not my favorite reuben pretty standard. - Split pea soup: Enjoyed the flavoring and the texture of this. - Fries: These were a total miss. I wasn't expecting them to be in the shape of a chip instead of a normal French fry and they weren't as crispy as I would have wanted. The pickles were a nice (expected) addition to the dishes but could have been a bit crisper. Service was great and attentive. While glad we tried it not sure I would necessarily wait when the line is as long as I've seen it get. read more

Wanted to try S&P now for a year or so and finally had the opportunity. It was a short walk from midtown south on 5th and I avoided the noon lunchtime crowd arriving 1:45pm and was able to sit at the counter. A server came over immediately with a menu and a water. I wanted to sample a fresh made deli sandwich so I selected the corn beef sandwich. The corn beef was moist and very tasty served on rye bread with a dill kosher pickle and counter side was spicy mustard. I ate the entire sandwich and it was very good. It's not stacked with thinly sliced corn beef like other Deli's. This corn beef was sliced thicker. It did not take away at all from the texture or taste, only the appearance. Personally, I think there could have been more corn beef on the sandwich. No drink, only water, plus $20 including tip. I'll try another sandwich next time as the prepared plates going to others on the counter looked really good! Enjoy! read more

Located in the shadows of the mid-renovation Flatiron Building, S&P is slightly confusing on the outside because of a sign that calls the shop a different restaurant name (although the word S&P is smaller below the name). The store offers cozy and crammed indoor seating, just the NY way we all have come to enjoy. Offers breakfast and lunch menu's, and seems to play off of a retro, throwback vibe. Pastrami sandwich left me with much to be desired in terms of quantity of food, and a second meal to be sought after, although the thick cut slices were pleasant and melted in my mouth. read more

On a Thursday for lunch I traveled into the city and did some research on where to go for a lunch bite. S&P was one that kept ringing out wherever I looked. I set out and was able to take the subway and walk up around 11:45AM. As a party of one, I just sat right down at the counter. There is seating in the back of the place as well, so if there is a line along the wall when you walk in don't be discouraged, observing things it looks like a lot of time it's just a log jam at the front with people paying out and waiting for tables. I ordered a Flatiron Turkey Sandwich, which comes with slaw and on rye. I also added an order of fries and a diet vanilla cola. This is an old style soda jerk place, so the cola you can watch them make it while sitting at the counter. The sandwich was very good - plenty of Russian dressing, a hefty amount of turkey, and just a solid sandwich. The fries, as you can see - are not long and thin but more like a thicccer potato chip cut. Can be loud, but I would recommend lunch here. read more

This sandwich shop I absolutely enjoyed from the classic diner counter and vibrant bustling of conversations while savouring each bite of my sandwich paired with a coffee to start my morning, during my lunch break, or unwind after a long day of work. When you first enter, you are welcomed with lively conversations and plates moving around the diner counter. I ordered two classic sandwiches, which were the Pastrami on Rye and Tuna Melt. What I liked about these sandwiches were the portion sizes and how filling it was. The Pastrami on Rye had the right amount of pastrami and mustard that wasn't overwhelming while eating or trying to finish it. The Tuna Melt was the ideal comfort sandwich that was warm and toasty, especially when taking that first bite that was crisp yet soft. I personally love sitting on the diner counter and watching the preparation of orders coming back and forth. If you wish to sit on the diner counter, there is a bit of a waiting period, but there are additional seating options further back in the sandwich shop.
