After the work was completed, he ensured that there were no ongoing issues and that the work was completed to my satisfaction. At no point did Ryan come off as impatient or made me feel like he was rushing. He completed the fix quickly, but was very thorough in his work (something that comes with experience, practice, and being confident in the work). While trying to install a new lighting fixture in the basement of our 1920s home, we encountered some truly baffling issues that, among other things, affected the outlets in our living room upstairs. After trying to troubleshoot the issue every way we knew how, we consulted Yelp to see if there was an electrician nearby who might be able to sort things out for us. After reading the glowing reviews of Ryan Electrical Power and Lighting, it was an easy decision. Ryan responded to my request almost immediately and was at our home in Oak Park within an hour. As we expected, our electrical issues weren't exactly straightforward but Ryan took his time to locate and remedy the problem and, in the process, eased our concerns about the safety and longevity of our wiring. Ryan was extremely professional and courteous (he chatted with my dad and explained everything he was doing every step of the way so we know what to be on the lookout for in the future) and his rates were really fair. (When we inquired about the possibility of installing our new Nest Thermostat, he even recommended that we just call an HVAC professional who would probably charge us less!) While we hope we don't have any electrical/wiring issues in the near future, we most certainly will call Ryan first if anything comes up! read more

We were really optimistic after reading the reviews for Ryan. After we recently experienced a blackout in our master bathroom, and after my husband checked the fuse without success, I went to Yelp where I came across Ryan's profile. The good: he was responsive and was able to come same day! Unfortunately, his visit did not at all live up to the reviews here or the expectations we'd aligned on via the phone prior to his arrival. When my husband called and spoke to him earlier in the day, Ryan was very elusive when asked about his hourly rate should repairs be required. We should've noted this as a red flag, but we figured we could at least get a diagnosis and then make an informed decision about how to proceed. When pressed, Ryan claimed his fee just to show up and diagnose the problem would be $175. That felt a little steep, but we agreed to that pricing after he explicitly confirmed that cost would go toward any repairs that might be required. After arriving at our home (and after looking around and telling us we had a really nice place/asking what we did for a living...) Ryan ultimately didn't honor that conversation. It turns out the problem was a hidden GFCI outlet (that my husband actually located while they were searching together) had tripped, so after pressing the reset button, the "problem" was resolved. Ryan looked at two additional spots in our home to give us an opinion, without having to do any work whatsoever. No tools, repairs, labor required. He had arrived at 6:05 and by 6:45, he was about to head out when he began a with a casual, "Let me just calculate the cost...the charge is $300." My husband asked how he has arrived at this price given he 1) inquired about his hourly rate both via text and on the phone and was informed that he would only incur that cost if repairs were needed and 2) given he was so clear the $175 covered the diagnosis. His response was that he was charging for two hours of time. My husband noted that he'd only been at our home only there 40 minutes and asked him to clarify, reminding him of their conversation. He kept vehemently replying "that's the price. Sorry you're disappointed" with no justification. Eventually after my husband stood firm, pushing back on him to explain, he started to gradually reduce his price until he was at $200. After a significant amount of back and forth, we finally paid him just to get him out of our home, but the whole experience left a very sour taste in our mouths. Save yourself the headache. Unless you want to chance having to deal with shady business practices, we do NOT recommend working with Ryan. read more

My in-laws had trouble with service company they hired to fix their range 2 days ago. Long story short, the technician blew up their fuse and their whole electric box went out. The power went out in half my house on Sunday morning. After resetting all the circuit breakers and calling Comed. I starting calling electricians. My call was promptly answered, and Mr. Ryan explained that he was out on a call, would be available in a couple hours, and he would call me back. We came to Ryan with a maddening intermittent problem: electricity in parts of a house would turn itself off and then turn itself back on, some highly variable amount of time later. Some times, hours later. With this happening more than once a day, the house was basically unlivable.
