Brewery # 405 I went to Rusty Axe while road tripping through Texas. I was pleasantly surprised by the revitalized look of the "Main St. area" of the town that included Rusty Axe. Rusty Axe is much larger than I expected and more of a restaurant feel to it than brewery feel. The restaurant itself is very nice. I sat at the bar and got me a flight and a pizza. I was really looking forward to trying their Dr Pepper BBQ brisket pizza but unfortunately, they were out. I ordered a Margherita instead and it was pretty good. The pizza oven (i believe wood fired) was in full view from the bar. They have about 12 beers on tap and a few seltzers. I got a coconut stout, 2 IPA's and a Kolsch. All of them were good but the Hoosier Hazy was probably my favorite. Cool place, good beer and I would definitely stop in again if I were in the area. There's not much in Lufkin but if you're ever in this small town, Rusty Axe is a must-visit. Whenever I'm in this area (usually for work), we always have a team dinner or happy hour here. Located in downtown, it is an inviting interior with clean dining tables and a bar area with several tvs along with a lounge area upstairs for hanging out. As a brewery, there are several taps serving a variety of locally brewed beers. Some of my favorites include the tomahawk amber ale (brown ale) and the Helles lager. Another favorite amongst our group is the Angelina Ultra, similar to Michelob Ultra but with a bit stronger wheat taste. With beer, there must be food. And they serve some delicious concoctions including hand-tossed pizzas, crafted burgers, and unique entrees such as their popular fish n chips and jagerschnitzel. The mushroom truffle pizza is a favorite here; who doesn't love truffle right!? And their white peacock burger and hot chicken sandwich are the favorite sandwich concoctions amongst our group. The peacock burger especially since it's bison and has that unique gamey taste I love. As for appetizers, they have unique tacos and the pretzel is a must-order due to the beer cheese and hot mustard accompanying the salty soft dough of the pretzel itself. The servers and bartenders move pretty quick and make sure our orders are what we request. Wednesdays are trivia nights which bring nostalgia as most of the questions involve the 1990's-2000's; the best time to be alive when we didn't have to worry about all the BS that's happening now. Be saying goodbye tonight to the rusty ax? I was the first review of the business and now after several years, we understand that tonight is the last night of their operation. Nobody really knows if they've been sold or will continue. I must say that the staff and the BUSINESS have always been great for us and they're truly leaving. We will miss them. This is just what Lufkin needed! Great service from the local college kids and others that worked there. They have singo bingo which we really enjoyed. The food was good, def has some room to improve as a few items were served cold (it was really cold this day). The pickles that come with the pretzels are SO GOOD. Please start selling them!!! Was driving through Lufkin and needed a good and longer stop so saw good reviews for this place and gave it a chance. My husband had the wagyu burger and I had the chorizo pizza with the house white wine and all were outstanding!! Also highly recommend the pretzel and beer cheese - it was cooked to perfection! The place had a good warm buzz about the place and the decor was perfect of a great upscale brewery! Solid well constructed tables and chairs, too. Strong brewpub vibe in the decor. Our server was very helpful and friendly. I ordered a margherita pizza with a salad and my dinner partner ordered a wagyu burger with white cheddar cheese and fries. Everything was well done, although the burger and pizza both lacked seasoning (easily corrected with a hit of fresh ground pepper and salt). The house made blue cheese dressing on the salad was really excellent. I wasn't a big fan of the fries - bit underdone and not crispy enough for my preference. The Rusty Axe is right next to my office so I order lunch there frequently. Service is always top notch and the food is yummy. Office faves are chicken Caesar salad, hamburger & fries. Mine and my co workers only compliment is we wish there were more lunch options available. That hamburger is massive and hard to eat at one time for lunch. Not much of a beer guy but i've heard good things in that regard, and I can confirm their wine options are solid. We came in on a Tuesday and were seated immediately! The hostess along with our server and the staff in general were all so sweet, and the interior was very cute. We got a flight of beers that our waitress had recommended and they were all pretty solid. As for food we got the Puffy Poké tacos as a starter which were 5/5 by far, so good and fresh!! As for entrees we got the Jägerschnitzel which with the sauce was good, but on its own it was pretty bland as far as flavor goes but it was cooked really well and such a big portion! The veggies and mash were very good, all in all I'll give it a 4/5. As for the Hot Chicken Sandwich, it wasn't hot necessarily, but the flavor was good so another 4/5. Had to run up to Rusk, TX from Houston and decided to stop mid way for lunch at this spot. Sounds like they just opened a week or so ago! Service was good. Little slow to start but we also came at a strange time (3:45PM). Once he started though, he was prompt to follow up. Drinks and food came out fast. Only complaint is the fries were soggy. This place has great beer and food I recommend the poke tacos. They are amazing. My only dislike. I will admit is extremely personal. I am not a fan of live bands near the bar or tables. They want to be so loud you can hear it out side. I go to eat to be able to talk to my wife or clients. Not listen to someone that want to be in a band. Now let's be clear. So, we were at the Lufkin location today and ordered two 5 Oz beers, a Nashville hot chicken and a Wagyu A-5 burger. We also asked for two soft drinks. The sever was noticeably flustered and was having trouble managing his orders and tables. He came back to us at one point to ask if we had placed our order well after we had placed our order. That should have been a clear indication that things weren't going to turn out well. They didn't. The Nashville hot chicken and Wagyu burger finally arrived. At this time, we only received 1 of the two, 5 oz beers ordered. The Nashville chicken bun was so saturated with butter and oil, that it dissolved when picked up. There was no seasoning on, what looked like, a large breaded chicken tender. The A5 Wagyu was cooked to the point of being grey and the meat had not been seasoned. Both menu items left a very noticeable film of grease on the palate. This was not an enjoyable experience. I even mentioned the condition of the chicken sandwich to the waiter who replied, "I know." So, if you know - why serve it!? The waiter should be part of the process of making sure the service and experience is good and not just be indifferent. The two redeeming items were the hand cut fries and the wheat beer. Unfortunately, we didn't ever see the second beer, or it might make the redeeming spot too. Who knows? Anyway, I doubt I'll be back, considering the indifference expressed at, what is a legitimate concern from a customer. read more

My family and I stopped by for lunch this past Saturday and had a solid experience. First thing that stood out to me was the kids menu. It's obviously a brewery but I love the fact that they have options for kids, making it a kid friendly place. Secondly, the wine list. While I didn't have any wine that day, my wife did and it has to be one of the bigger wine selections in Lufkin. Nice job on that part. The food is really good. We got a pizza and hot chicken sandwich (not hot enough for me) and both were gone in minutes. Easily the BEST pizza in Lufkin. The dough tasted like it was hand made. Also really hard to beat wood/coal fired pizza. The pickles here are crazy good too! Our server was very kind and helpful with guiding us through the menu. Shame on me for not getting her name. Beer was beer. I had the lightest offering they had and would drink it again. Can't speak on the heavier options. I highly recommend this place for something that is truly local and just damn good food. I will return. read more
