We talked wine, food, weather, birds, vineyards... And then we even got to meet and speak with Denis (the owner/winemaker). Such a great guy! Talking to him is like talking to a long time friend where you can talk about everything you like and don't like and everything in between. Right now.... He makes 32 different wines! Naturally we joined the wine club. Not just because we enjoyed the wine but because we loved the people. We also bought a bottle of wine to take with us to have at dinner where we let our server have a bit and told him he needed to go check out Odonata. (I couldn't believe he'd not been yet!) It seems like they were going for more delicate flavors in general, which may suit some people more than others. The estate-grown Pinot had an interesting spicy note and the Chardonnay was crisp and flavorful. The Cuvée Louie was a nice Bordeaux-style blend as well. We had the tasting room to ourselves and thus were able to learn a lot about the wines and the vineyard by chatting with the folks there. Very friendly and knowledgeable. Tasting was $20 a person, so prices seem to have gone up since previous Yelp reviews. Worth a stop though, especially if you're already driving down River Rd. between some of the other wineries.

The valley and wine trail (aptly named River Road Wine Trail) that parallels a lazy river, offers a beautiful view of the rich agriculture in the area. The east facing vineyards overshadowed by golden Central California hills/mountains, fall colors, rich soil, framed by a peaceful farming community makes it unique and special. The tasting room is unimpressive. The server, friendly. The wine, the 09 syrah, was lovely. There were other wines that did not impress, but they also offered a port that was smooth and went down easily. The syrah came home with us at $28 a bottle. And the only reason we passed on the port was because we already have too much good port stored at home. And in nearby Gonzales, Mr. B took care that his non-wine drinking wife got some excellent sustenance. So all was well with the world again.

We have our favorites in Carmel Valley, but decided that when we visit, we need to make a point of trying a new spot. On this trip out, Rombi was the spot. They were highly recommended by Summer over at Parsonage who knows our palate very well. The tasting room sits back from Carmel Valley Road just a bit so if you weren't actively looking for it, it could be easy to miss. Their address is 1 Center Street, but they are basically right in front of Jerome's Market. The tasting room is cozy with a bar and only a few tables. They are only open Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5:00. Typically the tasting room is manned by Sal, owner and winemaker. On our visit, Sal was elsewhere, but Kathy took wonderful care of us. Rombi is very small production with only about 300 cases a year. They specialize in reds. We were treated to tastes of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Syrah and Petit Verdot. Honestly, we loved each wine we tried. If I had to pick favorite reds in Carmel Valley these would be it with the exception of Parsonage wines which we dearly love. Kathy told us about the wines and made our visit so enjoyable. Each wine is priced around $70 - I believe one was priced a bit higher. I can understand the pricing with such small production and wonderful quality. However, I was so surprised the tasting fee was only $10 at the time we visited which is practically unheard of anymore. I would like to stop in again someday if only to meet Sal, who I hear is quite the character. Of course, we'll have to ask him "Where's Kathy?". Kathy made a point of telling us when she is behind the bar all she ever hears is "Where's Sal?" Rombi is definitely well worth a stop!

This made our experience at Joyce special. The wine lineup at our tasting had a few unique varietals that we don't see very often. Albariño and Gamay were two of the five wines we tried. We took some Gamay home with us. This was the first tasting room in Monterey County that I felt had a host with deep knowledge. Joyce is lucky to have him... AND the wine, paired with the Owner's (Russell) story, is really good as well. You don't need to go to Beaujolais France to have a find good Gamay. Just stop by Joyce's tasting room in the Village.

We spotted it just off the 101 in Greenfield and decided to pull in on a whim. We were greeted by Laurel, who ended up making the experience even better. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and took the time to walk us through the wines. We decided to try some of the reserve wines and were blown away. The winery itself is beautiful, modern, relaxed, and surrounded by great views right next to the estate vineyards. What was supposed to be a quick stop turned into one of the highlights of our trip. Needless to say, we enjoyed ourselves enough to join the wine club and buy a case to bring back home to Temecula. Looking forward to opening those bottles and remembering a great day.

Instead of a quick hello, he sat with us and spent real time sharing his story, how he came to winemaking, the "why" behind the wines, and even stories about his growing family. It turned what could have been a simple tasting into something much more memorable. This is exactly what we love about Carmel Valley compared to Napa or Sonoma. Here, the winemakers still pay attention. They sit down with you. They give you time. You leave feeling like you've not only tasted great wine, but actually connected with the people behind it.
