This was my first time coming to this tasting room . My friend is a wine club member so we visited so she could pick up her wines . We ended up staying for 2 hours and had the best time ! I loved their wines so much , I became a wine club member too ! What made the visit even more enjoyable was our sommelier, Laurel! She is the sweetest human . She's really knowledgeable and has an amazing palette which is very similar to mine so she was able to recommend some very great choices ! When you walk in , you feel very cozy and comfortable. The aroma of fresh wood , the pleasant presentation of items for sale , all really nice . We ended up then buying some of their salamis and cheeses to really have a nice snack while tasting as well. We've driven past this winery many times over the years on our Santa Barbara/Paso Robles trips and always thought we should check it out but never stopped, until last weekend. We pulled into the parking lot at about 1pm on a Sunday. There were only a couple other cars in the lot so it wasn't busy. We were greeted by Sebastian who asked us which of the 2 flights we would like to try, (1 with mostly whites and 1 mostly reds). We decided on 1 of each. We sat at a table in the large tasting room and Sebastian got us started. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about the wines and even pointed out where the grapes were grown on their vineyard map. We found that most of the Scheid wines were very soft with not a lot of the jammy fruit flavors that we prefer. Nothing wrong with that. It just isn't our style. But I could see Scheid being a great winery for someone that was just getting into red wine and didn't want anything too heavy or full of tannins. We did really like the Odd Lot Red and ended up buying a bottle of that. read more

Funny enough, this particular review really does make me feel even more strongly than usual that time has been basically stopped since March of 2020 - *right* before covid messed everything up, on our drive up to visit family for Christmas in 2019, we found all the wineries along the 101 that were offering free tastings for people with a Priority Wine Pass, and intended to stop at all of them. This would've been the last one we stopped at on the way home, but we were running late, so we missed out. Two years later, Priority Wine Pass was running their same great Groupon - this time, same trip up to NorCal, we stopped here first. So, like a lot of my winery reviews from around that time, I've giving Scheid an unequivocal 5 stars based on the price we paid for the tasting (nothing), rather than the original $20. (They also had a "reserve" tasting, originally $30, or $10 with the wine pass, but it was also mostly Pinots, the comped one had more variety anyway. And we ended up trying both of the non-Pinot "reserve" wines anyway!) On their tasting list time, we tried a pretty solid dry Riesling ($22 a bottle), a decent but pretty light $22 rose of Pinot, a great, rich, peppery, oaky, fruity GSM blend ($30), and a pretty solid $36 Cab. Not on that tasting list, but that we tried anyway because they were nice like that: the $45 Chardonnay from the reserve tasting instead of the cheaper, less-oaked one because we asked how oaked they were (I can confirm, the more-oaked one is pretty oaked, and delicious!), and a bonus pour of their $80 Claret blend (unsurprisingly also great, though I personally think the GSM was still the winner.) We didn't buy any wine this time (we have a lot of wine at home), but they still got our money: we also learned, they also sell local craft salamis (I can confirm, the lamb salami we bought is great), and local craft jams, including jams made with their wine grapes (we bought a $10 jar of the Cabernet jam, which I can also confirm is great.) Oh, other fun fact I learned, they get all their power for the vineyards from wind, and they even get extra sometimes and power nearby houses with it, too! Anyway, I wouldn't be quite as excited to come back for a tasting that was $20, but as long as that Priority pass keeps showing up on Groupon, it kinda keeps being a no-brainer getting it, especially as tasting room prices have gone up so much recently! For free, I'm obviously going to keep stopping here any time I'm driving by that they're open (all the wine we tried was great, and it is certainly convenient that unlike the other handful of wineries in this area, the tasting room is *literally* right off the 101.) And honestly, even if I don't leave with any wine, I'm probably going to be leaving with a jar of wine jam every time. We have a lot of great wine at home, great wine *jam* is a lot harder to find. read more

Some of the top search results that I could find when researching Scheid before visiting came from a private equity report on the winery's brand and potential. Not surprisingly, Scheid is a slick, well-oiled corporate winery. If you like the "standard higher-end wine-tasting experience", you'll probably enjoy a visit to Scheid. If you're a wine-ruining millennial who prefers good value, less pretension, and more storytelling/authenticity, this might not be the best place to visit. We came here specifically because they make a few styles that we really like that are pretty rare in the US. Those wines were, unfortunately not being served on the tastings and were pretty expensive even buying directly from the winery (one thing I don't get with wine is why it's often more expensive to buy the same bottles at wineries rather than at other outlets). The wines they were serving on the tasting menu came in two tiers ("estate" and "reserve") and were generally "okay", if not particularly memorable. The estate selections were uniformly blah and seemed to be there to make the "reserve" ones look better (it worked). $25 for the reserve tasting (w/mandatory tip on top of that) seemed pretty high for the area, and--confusingly--would only be waived with a sufficiently expensive purchase of specific types of reserve bottles. Apparently this is part of the standard "wine tasting" experience, but Scheid's policy seemed uniquely confusing. Service was generally efficient and polite from making the reservation through to paying. The grounds were nice in the kind of generic "designed for reception at a high-end wedding" sense, but not really connected to the surrounding vineyards. A live band played adult contemporary-style mash-ups of Top 40 hits. They did a good job of having the staff take COVID precautions, but some of the customers wandered around with their masks off and chatted with other tables. We'll keep an eye on their tasting menu to see if some more unique styles rotate onto it, but otherwise will continue to visit the River Road wineries further down the valley. read more

If you're lucky you'll find the little road that'll lead you to this wine tasting room. Inside are some of the most delicious wines you'll ever drink in your life. First, let me tell you that Scheid is one of the largest grape producers in the world. They supply grapes used for blending to many of the other vineyards especially in California. They also only sell their phenomenal wines at the vineyard or a few select restaurants (well, at least that's what they last told me). You can buy it from their website too. Now, on to the wine. I've been drinking their wines for years and they just seem to be getting better. How is that possible? I don't like whites, but their 2008 Chardonnay is mind-blowing! Crisp, fresh and oh-so-nice. *sigh* Their reds are out of this world. A Merlot that will melt in your mouth like a hot Hershey's kiss! And just when you think you've tried them all, they add new blends and varietals. This is why I'm a part of their wine club. It's irresistible! Giving me a discount for all this fabulous wine? Wow, I never knew the country had this? What a great find for us city slickers. Now when I go to visit my friend (Soledad) or Uncle (King City), I have something extra to visit. My uncle had recommended this place, so we checked it out. I'm so glad we did. What a nice laid back ambiance compared to snotty Napa. Tastings are $5, waived when you purchase a bottle of wine. Their prices for wine was super reasonable $26 and up. Picked up 2 bottles myself, one for me and one for my mom. My fiancée did the same. Grounds are so sweet. Nice little grape vineyard for you to walk around in. A bocce ball court. I nice little area if you want to get married out there. Some outdoor tables in a patio area for you to enjoy a glass of wine. Coolness is they have a tasting room out in fancy Carmel, I bet it must cost more out there? Great tasting. Such a family friendly warm feel from the minute you walk in. I used to be a club member years ago and why I ever left I do not know why. They expanded their tasting room with a nice dining and shopping area. They have such an extensive line of wines, and having a seated tasting session, being one of the only couple people there felt like such attentive service. I was so glad that I stopped and was able to rejoin their wine club, I can't wait for their next shipment. For myself I love white wines and their whites are very extensive and have such a great range of tastes and costs. I am just bummed they got rid of their tasting room on Cannery Row in Monterey and moved it to Carmel, I loved the Cannery Row vibe. But it is great having this one off the highway as we go back and forth up north. Definitely worth a stop, just look for the wind turbine. read more

I stopped in there today with my wife to do a little tasting. There was a duo playing music. It was very good. The weather was excellent, so we sat outside under one of the umbrellas. My wife tasted through the estate wines they were pouring, and I had a glass of Barbera. It is my understanding that they have a live musical presentation on Sundays. Wow! Fantastic wines! Great price points and nice staff. I stopped here on my way down to SLO for Thanksgiving, and I'm glad I did. I needed a break from all the tail gating a-holes, so a little wine tasting and chat with the super friendly tasting room staff was a total treat. The map on Yelp is totally wrong. I think the easiest way to arrive is heading South on the 101. It's past that gigantic wind brake of Eucalyptus south-east of Greenville before King City (if you take the 101 you should know what I'm talking about). Once you turn off onto Hobson it's really close So this vineyard has 4,000 acres of grapes! They are serious business, growing in 4 different 'appellations' in Monterey county. Of that 4k acreage, only about 10k cases become labeled Scheid- the rest of the grapes are sold off to become other fancy wines that are probably more expensive. (who knows, i don't think they can divulge those details!?) I was tempted to join this wine club because it's pretty flexible with mixes, frequency of shipments (or pick-ups) and volume (2-6 bottles every 2 months, in red/white or mixed combos). The other reason it's so tempting is they don't retail! You can also go to their Cannery Row tasting lounge- I'll have to check that out. Good business model, I imagine. Cut out the middle man, right? I love the Pinot, and I bought a bottle of the Merlot. Nominal tasting fee was waived with purchase. Most other wines I tasted were from 2008, but tasted delicious, were in the $ 22-40 range and I bet they will get better. Thanks! read more

The wine was just ok. There isn't much of a view as the surrounding area is flat. I was surprised at the tasting fee being $20 for estate and $30 for reserve. That is almost Napa pricing! Also, members still have to pay for tastings, albeit a discounted rate. Still though, as a member, tastings should be free. The grounds were nicely kept and restrooms were clean. Our wine pourer, Brandon, was frankly the best part of the experience. He was extremely knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely tried to pour wine that we liked. On our drive home from pismo beach to the Bay Area, we weren't quite ready to say goodbye to our little weekend getaway and stopped at Scheid Vineyard right off the 101 for a "quick" tasting. Two hours later and I told Laurel I would definitely give her a shout out for her warm cheer while sharing interesting facts and info for each of our tastings. I got the reserve and I'm glad I did, I found Laurel and I have very similar tastes. When she asked me if I liked ports, I was a little reluctant, it's very rare I find a port I like but she called it, I mean I drank the whole thing (which is still tasting size but still it's port). She really knew her stuff on the wine and providing her personal favorites and fun facts really made it a more enjoyable experience. I think she also made scheid vineyard look good by expressing their support of other vineyards and areas. The backyard area was quaint and clean, I liked the simplicity of pumpkins at the table and the nice walk way to the clean open restrooms. There was also a tiny rose garden in the back that was nice to stroll through. We really considered becoming wine members, Laurel did a fantastic job with her service and the prices were so affordable, truly our only reservation was distance, we don't go down 101 much past Monterey, SLO was a first for my partner even though he was born and raised in the East Bay. It only took two visits to Scheid Vineyards for it to become a destination location for us, rather than a mere roadside pit stop on the way to Paso Robles. By that time, I had been able to taste nearly 20 different wines made by their 4-person wine-making team, which turns out less than 10,000 cases annually from Scheid's extensive vineyards located in all major growing regions (I, II, III, and IV) in Monterey County. The range here is awesome: more than 10 different whites, more than a dozen reds, desert wine, sparkling wine, reserve wines, dry, off-dry, sweet ... the works! On the occasion of our second visit, we were able to admire the newly opened tasting room, which was still in the process of being decorated and filled with wine and gift items for purchase. The outdoor patio and demonstration garden were as beautiful as I remembered from our earlier visit (spring 2016), but this time there was a distinctive fall flair: cool temperatures in the 40s, raisinated grapes drying on the vines, lavender bushes in full bloom, and fallen leaves on the walkway. You forget how close US-101 is once you enter the Scheid tasting room complex, which is next door to the wine-making facilities, but which is charming enough to be used for weddings, reunions, or other festive group events. It is hard to describe what makes a Scheid wine a Scheid, but it has something to do with their intimate knowledge of each of their many vineyard sites, some of which are ideal for Spanish and Portuguese grapes like Tempranillo and Touriga Nacional, others of which produce wonderful white wines like Grenache Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Chardonnay, and Albariño. Scheid makes my favorite Grüner Veltliner in all of California, and their rosé of Pinot Noir, made exclusively from grapes harvested at a single vineyard (Mesa del Rio), is superb. It's low alcohol (under 13%), perfectly pink, balanced in acidity, and rich in strawberry flavors and rose petal-like, floral aromas. Simply delicious. Scheid makes a huge range of Pinot Noir wines, but their basic bottling remains a favorite, with classic aromas of forest floor and earth and lots of fruit and spice on the palate. I was impressed by their Cabernet Sauvignon as well, which has beautiful herbal notes and dark berry flavors with a long, clean finish. Most white wines sell in the $20 range, with the Odd Lot White (7 white varietals blended together and chosen by consensus among the winemaking team) and Odd Lot Red blends costing slightly less (around $18). Most reds wines retail in the high $20s and $30s with reserve bottlings reaching much higher ($50 or more). If you purchase a half case, which is easy to do here, you can qualify for a discount of 10-12%, even if you aren't a wine club member. If you have the time after the tasting, and if you are heading North rather than South, you can take backroads towards the Santa Lucia Highlands and River Road instead of rushing back onto US-101. You'll pass many vineyards along the way in the Arroyo Seco AVA before reaching other great Monterey County wine tasting locations like Hahn, Wrath, and Odonata. Tasting room staff have been wonderful on both of our visits: polite, knowledgeable, engaging, and excited about the wines being poured, willing to open up new bottles if necessary or share extra pours of wines that you're intrigued by, like their Petite Sirah, which I find very alluring with lots of depth and dark blueberry and black fruit layers. Scheid is simply one the the most versatile wineries in all of California, which is saying a lot. Highly recommended on your next trip to - or through - the area! read more

"The Purloined Letter," police inspectors in nineteenth century Paris ransack a suspect's apartment in search of a crucial piece of evidence contained in a sealed envelope. They look everywhere - well, almost everywhere, for they overlook a mantelpiece with visitor cards displayed in plain sight. And lo and beyond! There hidden in an unassuming envelope is the letter! It is so obvious, in retrospect. It was there all along, except that nearly everyone failed to notice it in their ultimately fruitless searches, until Poe's clever and observant detective, Monsieur Dupin, comes along to save the day. A wine-making gem. Hidden in plain sight. That's what one might conclude after a visit to Scheid's Highway 101 tasting room between Greenfield and King City. The vineyards themselves, nearly 10,000 acres of them, are scattered up and down the Salinas Valley, but only a small portion of the grapes grown there - in locations ranging across 4 of the 5 major grape growing regions in California (Region I being the coolest, Region IV the warmest) end up in the Scheid Family wines home label. A tasting room off Highway 101? How good can that be? Very good. Excellent, in fact. All you have to do is slow down, signal, and within a few hundred yards, you are in a different world. Lizards bask in the sun. Birds flock amidst the flowers. Bees gather pollen in the lavender, while grapes ripen in the vineyards and the lovely display garden, where you can see various trellis systems (for Chardonnay and Syrah) that are used to produce quality wine grapes. Within an estate vineyard production of around 10,000 cases, including some limited production varietals made in batches of only a few hundred cases or less, there are some real gems - white, red, and rosé - to be found. A $10 tasting fee allows visitors to sample 4 whites, 4 reds, or a mixed selection of up to 5 wines (often with 1-2 extra pours offered) from both menus. Unless you are a die-hard whites or reds only drinker, you'd be well advised to go with the mix-and-match option, simply because Scheid excels across the board with a wide range of wine styles and varietals. While there are several blended offerings to choose from - a Rhone white blend, a Rhone red blend, a winemaker's everything but the kitchen sink blend, and a high-end Bordeaux claret, my preference on a recent spring visit was for the single varietals: a superb small batch Gruener Veltliner that was crisp, bright, and refreshing, a rosé of Pinot Noir that was superb for al fresco dining; an apricot-skin and peach pit Albariño; a lovely estate Pinot Noir dripping with earth and floral undertones overlayed with rich red fruits; and a brooding, inky and full finishing Petite Sirah from the Hames Valley Vineyard, near the southern end of the Monterery appellation that goes from blackberry to dark cherry over the course of a lingering Saturday afternoon meal by the grill. The tasting room staff are helpful and unpretentious, swapping stories of wines Old World and New and chock full of good tips for post-tasting taqueria fare in nearby King City. A 2- bottle purchase waives the tasting fee, and since all Schied wines are bottled with twist off screw caps, they make ideal picnic or road trip supplies once you return to the highway for your next destination. Few wineries anywhere in California have the ability to make wine from estate vineyards in such a range of growing regions. From cool climate Pinot and Chardonnay to mid-climate Rhone, Tuscan, and Bordeaux varietals to Mediterranean grapes that welcome the heat, Scheid truly has all the bases amply covered. It would be hard to leave here without at least a 2- or 4-pack of wines to take home - or drink in the evening at your hotel, B&B, or campsite - while savoring the opportunity to stop back the next time to sample a few more. Road trips on the 101 just got that much better, thanks to hidden-in-plain-sight gems like Scheid. Give it a try on your next journey, and by all means, buy a bottle of the Albariño, Pinot Noir rosé, or Gruener Veltliner before they are gone! More perfect springtime sippers than these beauties are very, very hard to find in the Golden State, or anywhere else! read more

So I was on my way back from a horseback riding lesson in King City, and made a somewhat spontaneous decision to check this place out. I've driven past their tasting room numerous times, and seen their wine in various stores, yet for some reason never bothered to try things out. I was the only there, and had the undivided attention of my servers, who were quite nice. I tried everything on the tasting list, and they even broke out some stuff that wasn't on the list. I didn't meet a wine that I didn't like, and had a hard time picking out what would be coming home with me. Finally, I decided on the chardonnay (YUM), merlot (which is FANTASTIC with chocolate, which I never would have tried had it not been for the suggestion of one of the servers), and gewurztraminer (a little drier than I'm used to, but wonderful all the same). The tasting fee is $5, but is waived when you purchase a bottle of wine (which you will). Much to the dismay of my husband, I joined their wine club (bringing me to a grand total of six wine club memberships). You can select to have the bottles shipped to you, or to pick up your wine at either the Greenfield room, Cannery Row room, or Salinas corporate office. Your wine will come every other month, and you can choose to have 2, 4, 6, or 12 bottles; additionally, you can elect to have all whites, all reds, or some of both. Discounts on future orders are 20% on the 2-bottlers, 25% for the 4 and 6 types, and 30% for those who get 12 bottles. Additionally, all of your purchases on the first day are 30% off. Today I scored a total of 5 bottles for about 70 bucks - definitive score. Their tasting room is right off 101, which doesn't provide for great views, but definetely facilitates access. I've been to a few well known vineyards in Napa, Temecula, and Santa Ynez, and this is my first one in this region. I was in the area and decided to check it out. IT WAS WORTH THE STOP! The server was knowledgeable with each wine served, and she let us try maybe 4 more that wasn't on the list because she tried to cater to our palate. So basically we had 10 tastes each. Went home with the 2010 Pinot and 2009 Petite Syrah. The venue is beautiful. Went outside and grabbed a couple grapes from the vines for dessert. Our server even went outside and took some pictures of us. There are tables outside where you can have your lunch while having a glass of wine, and a cute balcony you can access from a winding stairway. Best experience at a winery. My brother and I are King City natives and decided to check out Scheid Vineyards this afternoon since we have driven past it billions of times! I am so sad I didn't come here sooner! We had the Estate Wines Tasting which included 6 wines. It is $5 per person and the fee is waived if you buy a bottle. We walked out with 3 bottles. The service was great! Lee and Sonja were so kind and informative about the different wines. The outside grounds are small but very nice to stop by for a break to taste some wines off the 101 for non natives to the area. I didn't have the best experience here. They were nice but a little snobby. I didn't mind the wine but I had higher hopes for the experience. I would come back because its so close to where my family lives, but I wouldn't recommend it if you want a great tasting experience. However, I would recommend coming because the wine is very tasty. The person behind the counter was very informative to the other couple next to us but didn't say much to us. The grounds are small and the room is small as well so it seems very easy to make conversation with everyone in the room. There wasn't much of an attempt to educate us on the wine. Tasting is very reasonable in cost and right on point with the other wineries in the area. read more

2.5 stars for the wine tasting. 5 stars for the service, staff, & location. The wine didn't impress me. None of the 6 sampled wines really stand out for me to buy a bottle. Maybe it's just me, but "yey!" for local businesses. read more
