It was our first-time wine tasting in Soledad; we usually go up north for wine tasting but wanted to try out the area since it's close by. Wrath Wines was our first stop, and the staff was extremely friendly and welcomed us as soon we entered the tasting room. There are three wine-tasting options to choose from, Ex Tasting ($20), Winemakers Tasting ($25) & Single Vineyard Tasting ($30). We decided to do the Single Vineyard Tasting to try the best of what the estate had to offer. Once we walked outside, we were amazed by the beautiful views outside. We sat down and sipped on our wine, and we all enjoyed our first taste! We got prosciutto to snack on. We were going to get the charcuterie board, but after seeing the big portion size, we didn't want to fill up so quickly. Their food options are well worth it all around! We were there for about two hours, and we didn't realize how fast time had passed. The staff was very knowledgeable of all their wines and did a fantastic job giving a very detailed description of each wine. I regret not purchasing any wines, but I plan on purchasing some on my next visit, which will be very soon! read more

THIS wine. WHEW!!! The Santa Lucia Highlands have never tasted so good. Did you hear me?! They've NEVER tasted this damn good. I mean... as much as I adore Hahn up the road; When it comes to Wrath's Pinots and Chardonnays, Hahn could NEVAAAA! Wrath wines are the absolute truth. You won't find wines like this from the SLH anywhere else. Came here with my cousin last year for a tasting, and we were both blown away by how amazing the wine was. My cousin isn't a huge wino, but even she couldn't stop talking about these wines. Wrath is located in the cuts of Soledad along Foothill Road. Their estate isn't as grand as Hahn, but it's still beautiful. You'll definitely get a more personal and intimate experience here, which I adore. Malin was our sommelier and she was absolutely exceptional. From her detailed explanations of the wines to how she was able to gauge both of our palates; this lady was spot on with everything the entire time that we were there. It was so incredible that it was honestly a bit scary. She knew my wine language and I was entranced from beginning to end. It's crazy because Wrath uses many of the same clones as Hahn, but the wines here are just so damn ethereal. I hate to keep comparing the two, but if you know anything about SLH then you know that Hahn is the big dog. But Wrath just blows them out of the water. It's the underdog for me. But anyways, it's all about those Pinots and Chardonnays. Didn't taste one wine that I didn't like. Not ONE. This is one of those spots where the wine is so good that's it honestly hard to really choose a favorite. They have three different tasting options: their standard tasting ($10), their winemaker's tasting ($20), and their single vineyard tasting ($20). I'm gonna tell you right now, you need to be going for either their winemaker or single vineyard tasting. Malin was nice enough to mix things up a little bit for me and choose wines from both the winemaker and single vineyard wine list based on my palate. You'll need to purchase a total of $70 worth of wine to waive the $20 tasting fee. At first I thought that this was kind of absurd, but after having the wines, it's honestly so easy to do. You WILL be leaving here with a least a few bottles. Period. I brought home three; two Pinots and one Chardonnay. When I tell you that I drank that wine so damn fast, I am NOT kidding. These did not last long in my cellar at ALL. Ugh... so delicious. Now I'm wishing that I had purchased way more than I did. This winery is about 2 hours away from me, so my visits will be limited throughout the year, but I've been dying to get back! Luckily, I can order their amazing wines online. Their wines are mostly small production and they sell out of third single vineyards pretty quickly. I've signed up to receive emails about special wine releases, and I've honestly only received a few emails during the year, but this is basically their "membership". It's so worth it to sign up because this wine is amazing. Looking forward to returning here again this year at some point for another wonderful tasting. read more

The wines here were of excellent quality, but wine taste is highly subjective so this review isn't about the wine so much as it is about the tasting room and vineyard. The tasting room itself is quite nice. There isn't much seating, but I think the idea is to go outside when the weather is cooperative. On the day that I visited, it was delightfully sunny outside, but rather windy and cold so the visit was much better standing inside. There was a nice fire in the fireplace while there. Outdoors is very nice and would be great during warmer times. There is a lot of seating, some tables, cornhole, and bocce. The view is outstanding from the tasting room. Highly recommend a stop in if you're passing by. read more

It's a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky warm in the shade and a little breeze coming off the water lily covered pond. One other couple on the patio, we pretty much have the place to ourselves... every Monday should be like this! Da Wine: Tastings are $20 for 4/5 pours free with wine purchase), did both the Winemakers and the Single vineyard. We ended up taking 8 bottles with us, surprise of the day was the rosé , while the Chardonnay and Pinot selections never disappoint - luv the KW. We brought a picnic of aged gruyere, manchego, iberico chorizo, olives, Marconas, fig jam, pan epi... even some truffle chips - came prepared!! They do a nice little charcuterie plate there, but they allow you to bring your own so... Da Service: Nicole is so pleasant, made us feel right at home, never rushed and was happy to give us back story on several wines. Had to revisit the rosé, perfect for the day. Wrath Wines was one of our stops on the way to Carmel By the Sea. It was a very quaint stop with a beautiful view of the majestic agricultural land. The wine had a fruit flavorful aroma with a smooth finish. They had three tastings to choose from; $15, $20, and $25 depending on what your taste pallet desires. I tasted three Pinot Nior wines, and all had a very light and refreshing flavor with an earthy and fruit flavorful blend. We enjoyed a game of bocce ball as we sipped our delicious wine. Does your breast heave with anger? Are you in the Carmel Valley? While I lack medical accreditation, I feel compelled to invite you to visit Wrath Winery. Their tasting room, cannily and gorgeously set within the valley, may provide you with the release you crave. You'll start out with the chard, which, I must tell you, can be divisive. It is immensely buttery. If that's your thing you'll love it. If not, I can commiserate, and I recommend you pause for further tastings. Take, for example, the Swan 828 Pinot. It is very smooth, with a little pepper on the nose, while blackberry notes predominate. Sadly there is no earth but it isn't a jammy fruit bomb either. Like your high school poetry teacher, she is an afternoon delight. Moving on, you'll find more complexity with the other Burgundian blends. The Pommard 4/777 is chewier with more grip and minerality; a peppery wine that will pair well with cheezes and yeezus. Then, you'll spend time with the aristocrats. The 115/667 is thin, nigh anorexian; austere and the most Burgundian of the bunch. I loved it but then the ruling class has always been the class for me. But don't pass up the finest, the KW Ranch, She is an impressive bottling. Pepper on the nose, mint down the gullet. You'll slip and slide down her curvaceous slopes like she was a Kardashian in sweeps week. You'll have a rash but the memories will last a lifetime. read more

After visiting seven wineries down in Paso Robles and not seeing one Pinot Noir on any tasting list, we just had to stop in to a Santa Lucia Highlands winery and what better place than Wrath!? So serious though, everything they have is world class and not only did we get to try Pinot Noir, we tried five different varieties. And it was so hard to pick a favorite! Megan our host was so gracious with all my questions and even forgetfulness! Thank you for hiring such thoughtful staff members and for being open on Easter! Alright, I wine taste all over California. This place has wonderfully kept grounds and beautiful views. I did like that you can create your own tasting (you pick the 5 you are interest in). However, I was not impressed with their wines or the tasting experience. The tasting is WAY overpriced- $20 and waived if you buy $70 worth of wine. The tasting itself was not interactive, it was more just naming what was going in the glass and that was it. We usually buy bottles everywhere we go, but none of them caught our attention. So we left our $40 for the 2 tastings and were on our way! read more

This was our last--and best--stop of the day as we wine tasted along the river road in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Since we were spending a long holiday weekend in Monterey, home to John Steinbeck's Cannery Row, it seemed appropriate to stop at a winery named Wrath. Although the branding is stark and slightly sinister, featuring the outline of an abandoned, dilapidated house on the outskirts of the vineyards, the property and lush wines are anything but (see photos). The water lily filled man-made pond is an unexpected oasis in the arid landscape--and surely what the Joads dreamed of as they escaped their Dustbowl hell. The wines of Wrath were what we'd dreamed of as we embarked on our day trip inland from the coast. Overall, we'd been pleasantly surprised by the wineries of the SLH, but Wrath's wines are far more sophisticated and refined than the others we tried that day (including some with much higher name recognition). The well-balanced rose and chardonnays were perfect for sipping on the warm day, but the reds were the standouts. We came away with a few bottles of pinot and are looking forward to their new releases later this year. We hope to return to pick up more wine this summer and will definitely try to bring some friends along to picnic beside the pond, underneath the willow trees. read more

Although very beautiful the tasting room was a bit pretentious. This server became a little frazzled when more people showed up for tasting. This Sauvignon Blanc was good. Very frugal on the pours.. We didn't get the same vibe of friendliness as we did in some of the other winery tasting rooms. But the view is beautiful and it's worth a trip to visit. You can choose what type of tasting according to your likes for $20 or you can go with a tasting flight of three for $10 and another tasting that includes I believe six various wines for $20. read more

One of the best things about Wrath - other than the wine - is how unexpected the whole thing is. It's probably not what Robert Mondavi would have imagined California wine culture in 2016 to be like. It is equal parts attractive and edgy: like a grandma on a vintage Triumph with a Led Zeppelin tattoo on the nape of her neck. Or a 5-year old who can quote Steinbeck - in Mandarin. Or a white wine fermented in an amphorae-like vessel, or named something obscure in Latin, or a family of Texans who enjoy making small batch wine (ca. 6000 cases) with utterly admirable attention to detail, despite the financial risks this entails. It's called Wrath, after all, not Hello Kitty's Pink Wines & More. The fundamentals for making ultra premium wine at Wrath are all there: a Monterey County growing site at the junction of River and Foothill Roads, on a valley floor location at the edge of the accoladed Santa Lucia Highland appellation, exposed to the elements and lightly shielded on one side by an elegant pine tree windbreak. There is a talented, maverick-oriented winemaker, Sabrine R., who oversees a wide range of white and red wines using estate grapes and selected lots purchased primarily from the Santa Lucia Highlands, but who also bottles wines under her own private label while supporting the efforts of micro-winemakers who pool their limited marketing resources under the "Wines of Danger" moniker. There is an intriguing mother-son dynamic involving transfer of estate vineyard oversight from one generation to the next that included a name change (San Saba became Wrath), and an overhaul of the look and feel of the label and tasting room. Inside and out, there is a spare, clean feel to the place, like a sports car that has been stripped down of bells and whistles to reveal only essential elements. Distinctively packaged wines using classically Roman inspired names feature bold black and red fonts make subtle reference to the weathered, Victorian wooden structure that greets visitors at the southern edge of the estate, one that often appears silhouetted against a monotone backdrop of grape fields, cloudless sky, and searing sunshine. One could easily imagine Ridley Scott using the spot as a location for some sort of spine-tingling thriller or colonial era blood-and-glory conquest film. And the wines? They, too, are an amalgam of the expected and unexpected. As is typical of cool climate Region I vineyards, there are Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays to choose from, anywhere from $19-29 bottlings to those above $30 designed for longer-term aging or made using methods that inhibit secondary (malolactic) fermentation that highlight the minerality and spice of a wine rather than its fruit-driven core. Then there are the enticing oddballs, like a highly aromatic, green vegetable, lime zest, and juniper berry Sauvignon Blanc (ex Anima series) that bursts from the glass and brought to mind a Montana gin from a favorite small batch producer, the Montgomery Distillery. There is an unfiltered "ex Dolio" Falaghina (an Italian grape grown in Campania), ennobled by a melange of Blenheim apricot skin, dank cellar scents, and raw hazelnut, which gets special treatment in ceramic fermenting vessels akin to the amphorae used in places like Friuli, or among the urban winemaking hipsters in the East Bay. There is an outstanding San Saba Syrah brimming with restrained power, singed cedar plank, crushed violet, and cracked peppercorn, all of which get lost in heart-of-darkness, wild berry depth. There is a entry-level Pinot Noir (also ex Anima series) that fills the nose and mouth with wild fennel, tree-ripened black cherry, and sundried elephant heart plum, alongside a dizzying array of clonal-designate or singe vineyard options. If any of this sounds alluring to you, pay a visit to Wrath and get up close and personal with their unusually fine wines. Listen to "Going to California" ahead of time to set the mood. Read up on recent news in Roman archaeology if that's your thing, or check out the "Wines of Danger" web site for tips on other edge-cutting Californian winemakers in the area (like Odonata, Comanche Cellars, or Waxwing). I stopped by Wrath Wines unexpectedly one afternoon after picking up a wine shipment from another Salinas Valley vineyard. I was not expecting much when I came in, as it was closing time and a rather gloomy day however, I was pleasantly surprised. We ended up staying well past closing and that did not seem to bother our attendant one bit. Michelle, our sommelier in training, is a doll! She is knowledgeable in all of the wines and fermentation processes, you can tell she has a passion for flavors and the business. We left with a bottle of chardonnay and a cab. The chardonnay was delicious, aged in stainless steel and had a clean, fruitful flavor, The cab was not impressive for me but then again, I am not a fan of cabs. In addition to the wines, Wrath offers a variety of local cheeses at a reasonable price to compliment your tasting experience. Wrath was formally known as San Saba and if you have not been there or have not checked it out since the change, do it and make sure you visit with Michelle, as I said before, she is fabulous! read more

This is an incredible winery - my favorite of the dozen or so that I've visited in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Each wine is lovingly crafted and often thought-provokingly well structured. I'm especially a fan of the Ex Anima Chardonnay and the Ex Vita Pinot Noir. The prices are quite reasonable for the world-class quality of the wines. Their grounds are beautiful and well worth a stroll around the pond on a sunny day. I saw people sitting at tables outside and it looked idyllic - definitely something to try next time I visit! Finally, I found their customer service to be unusually attentive, both while I was at the winery and afterwards. One of the bottles I bought fell and broke due to a packaging snafu, and they immediately offered to replace it gratis. That is really going above and beyond! read more

As a local, this is one of my absolute favorite places to pop over and purchase wine by the glass and sit outside and take a deep breath and say, "Yeah, that's right, I live here!" The view is spectacular and it is one of the main reasons my husband and I end up taking a weekend drive to this spot. It is one of our "happy places." It would be perfect if they could just do something about the hot, hot south side of their patio. Umbrellas at least but a shade structure is needed. I like the sunshine but the patio is scorching. I must comment that the hospitality here is consistently outstanding! Across the entire staff, I am always made to feel genuinely welcome and the place is usually very loud because the visitors are actively engaged by the staff and are laughing and happily chatting. The Ex Anima Chardonnay is unlike any other and in spite of every wine snob bone in my body I just love it. The Tondre's Grapefield Pinot Noir is the only blend from this amazing vineyard (there are others) that comes close to paying homage to the straight stuff. I finally visited Wrath while my mum was visiting over the winter break. It was a much-anticipated visit, as I've loved many of their wines in the past. The grounds and tasting room are beautiful, as noted in the other reviews. If it hadn't been late in the afternoon and getting quite chilly when we got there, I could have spent hours on that porch, enjoying the view and the lowing of the cows across the street. The staff was incredibly friendly and generous, giving large pours for our tasting, and sneaking the occasional additional sample out to us as well. I was surprised at the fact that the wines didn't enchant me as much as the ones I've had before. I found a few that I liked, but they didn't match up to the love affair I had with a bottle of Pinot at Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, we recycled the bottle, so I don't know which one it was, and they make MANY. The wines had nice balanced flavors and none were off, per se, but they lacked the depth and complexity I tend to prefer in my reds. The Ex Anima Chardonnay was probably my favorite pour of the day, even though I tend to significantly prefer reds. I enjoyed the wines, and some were very good, though I thought the prices seemed a bit higher than what I would have expected for the quality. Nonetheless, it is a great winery to visit, so I give four stars because I'm rating the experience of tasting there--and going to the winery is a four star experience! read more

Generally, Monterey pinots haven't been my favorites due to their pale style. The many clone-specific pinots at Wrath have more substance, but were too off balance for me to fully enjoy. I ended up only liking the non-clone-specific "Ex Anima" pinot where the blending struck the right balance. They offer more than one tasting flight. The $10 tasting fee for four wines is waived with one purchased bottle. The $20 tasting fee for five wines is waived with $70 of wine purchases. read more

Have not been here since the new owners took over the winery. We were greeted by the server. She was perky and knew her Wrath wines. We tried the San Saba vineyard Pinot which was great. Great blend of flavors. We purchased a Chardonnay too. Both wines were well balanced although at 40+ per bottle they are expensive and not an everyday drinking wine for most. With any wines you need to try them yourself. You cannot go by others unless most of the reviews say it's terrible-or worse. I am glad that Wrath started wine tastings again. They have a beautiful winery set in their vineyards with a small pond. I think that this should be one of your planned stops your next trip down river road. ching ching read more
