CRU specializes in Pinot and Chardonnay which are not my favorite varietals but I would still recommend this winery to anyone in the area looking for a nice spot to enjoy a picnic and good wine.

When we arrived, the winemaker, Annette Hoff, and her team were just getting some de-stemming what looked to be Pinot Noir grapes and when we were leaving she was cleaning the de-stemmed. This is where the magic happens. The wine was delicious. Jude, our server was a delight. There was optional table seating just outside. No tasting bar. You sit where you want and the tasting room folks ask what you want and bring the bottle(s) to you. Chill. No fuss. Great wine. Love the hours! We were thinking of going to either Calera or Eden Rift afterwards leaning towards Eden Rift because their website noted a Petite Sirah as well as Pinots while Calera pretty much only had Pinots. The guy at De Rose said to go to Calera and not Eden Rift. Glad we didn't listen to him. It was about 3:20 on a Sunday and the tasting room closes at 4pm. There was a couple in front of us and their host kind of disuaded them from tasting since they would be closing soon and just sold them a couple of glasses of wine I believe. Luckily we were greeted by Sarah and after a brief conversation of what we look for in our wines she said that she could hook us up with a sort of mini flight of some Pinots and the Petite Sirah of course. We tasted 3 Pinots, the Estate, the Terraces, and the Landsdale. Sarah gave us a great little presentation into each wine, where they were grown and what sort of flavors we should find in them. She was extremely friendly and informative. We ended up liking pretty much everything but went home with bottles of the Estate and Landsdale Pinots as well as the Petite Sirah. While looking at the map of the Eden Rift vineyards I noticed that they had plots of Grenache, Syrah and Mouvedres. I asked Sarah if E.R. had plans to make a GSM as that tends to be pretty much our favorite type of wine. Sarah said that they did indeed have some in the works but it wouldn't be ready for another year or so. Can't wait to see how that wine turns out. So we ended up having an awesome time with Sarah at Eden Rift. She actually stayed with us until about 4:30pm with no pressure at all for us to leave since they closed at 4pm. Their wines are crushed, fermented, and bottled in Mendocino county and the family lives here locally and runs their wine business here in Monterey County (they also have a new tasting room in Monterey). Julia was our hostess and runs the tasting room in the village (and it sounds like she runs their family business as well). My wife and I enjoyed a flight of 5 wines. We liked their reds (Grenache, Syrah, and Zinfandel) more than their whites. All three reds were older 'library' wines, being 10-12 years old, which is unusual and a fun angle to their wine tasting offering. We haven't experienced being served older wines in the neighboring wine rooms, which makes blue fox unique in the village. Blue Fox had an unassuming tasting room, but has spectacular exterior grounds. Lots of room for serving large parties. In fact, they have a beautiful wood burning pizza oven for serving flatbreads on Sunday and have live music on occasion. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Blue Fox and learning about Julia and her husband's family business. We will be back with friends and family on Sundays to try their wood fired flatbreads paired with their delicious Syrah.
