Blue Fox is family owned wine tasting business in Carmel Valley Village. Their wines are all made from grapes harvested in Mendocino county. Their wines are crushed, fermented, and bottled in Mendocino county and the family lives here locally and runs their wine business here in Monterey County (they also have a new tasting room in Monterey). Julia was our hostess and runs the tasting room in the village (and it sounds like she runs their family business as well). My wife and I enjoyed a flight of 5 wines. We liked their reds (Grenache, Syrah, and Zinfandel) more than their whites. All three reds were older 'library' wines, being 10-12 years old, which is unusual and a fun angle to their wine tasting offering. We haven't experienced being served older wines in the neighboring wine rooms, which makes blue fox unique in the village. Blue Fox had an unassuming tasting room, but has spectacular exterior grounds. Lots of room for serving large parties. In fact, they have a beautiful wood burning pizza oven for serving flatbreads on Sunday and have live music on occasion. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Blue Fox and learning about Julia and her husband's family business. We will be back with friends and family on Sundays to try their wood fired flatbreads paired with their delicious Syrah. read more

Blue Fox Cellars is a hidden gem in Carmel Valley Village. The outdoor patio has beautiful mountain views and a laid-back atmosphere that's perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine. The tasting room is open, classy with a handcrafted, wood bar. All the folks that work there are super hospitable and friendly, and you often get to meet Julie, one of the owners, whose warmth and knowledge make the experience memorable. We were just there last Sunday after a very stressful week, and I finally was able to unwind and enjoy the afternoon with my husband. Wines are small-batch and thoughtfully crafted-- our favorites include the Chenin Blanc, Rosé of Grenache, Zinfandel and the Vermentino, which is especially refreshing. Live music on weekends adds to the charm, and the bocce ball court is a fun bonus. On top of that, they have their own pizza oven and offer a variety of delicious flatbreads at a reasonable price!! We were blown away on how tasty they were!! Honestly, we are picky wine drinkers, frequently visiting Napa and came from an area where there were large vineyards/wineries with beautiful settings. This ranks right up there!! If you're looking for approachable wines, personal service, and a spot that feels like a true local favorite, Blue Fox should definitely be on your list. Fabulous location to spend a Sunday afternoon listening to live music - playing Bocce ball, corn hole, a giant yard chess game, or just hanging out with friends. This was our first stop to taste when we arrived. The wine is absolutely terrible. I poured every glass out. We asked our recommend other tasting rooms and she said that we had heard of were not good. Turns out she was wrong. Avoid this place unless you have no idea about wines and can't taste. read more

This was a great experience. Grace was absolutely wonderful. She was pretty busy but still took time to explain the wine to us. We are local and have memberships with local wineries. I was pretty excited to try wines from Mendocino County and did not feel like it was taking anything away from Monterey County wines. It was nice to have a change. The Owner/Winemaker took time to visit with us and give us great information. We became members and are pretty excited for something new. Absolutely the nastiest wine I have ever tasted. The first two from the tasting flight smelled like a baby's diaper and didn't taste much better. They were all super acidic - my throat is still recovering. Had to dump most of the glasses. Couldn't even finish it. And I had never before met a wine that I couldn't push through. Overheard at another table "it's not super good, but at least I don't think it will kill you." Accurate, wise stranger lady. The owner didn't really build any rapport with us, but also casually dropped an f-bomb when talking about the wines her personally likes. The location is great. Lots of patio chairs and a great view. I'm not quite sure yet about the wines. They are pouring 2013,2014 vintages, some tasted old, but it could have been my palate. I'll go back to ask for newer vintages to try. The tasting is 20$ for 5 tastes. The favorite of the day was their Zinfandel. We did a wine tasting here for my best friend's surprise engagement party. The venue is intimate, but it was perfect for the 14 of us. Our sommelier Dallas was super chill, knowledgable, and so friendly. Even though we hadn't booked out the whole place, he told a few couples who came in that it was a private party. He let us bring in outside food to soak up the wine, played some good tunes, and cleaned up afterward. He even gave us a bottle of wine on the house as a gift to the happy couple. Blue Fox was a delightful find! Comfortably warn day, a table in the dappled shade, quite and serene. We decided on flights. I am a red drinker; hearty, robust reds. Their whites shocked me. I ended up placing a standing order for two cases a year. I worked in high end food and beverage in the Bay Area for a long time and learned an appreciation for good wine. Finally, the music. We ended up here by chance a couple of weeks ago. Maybe It was so magical because it was our first date night in months and the atmosphere was so peaceful when contrasted with 3 loud children. However, our dinner experience in downtown Carmel after our tasting was beyond subpar when compared with this little gem. The outdoor tasting area is beautiful and enjoyable. Beautiful views and ambiance. There is a larger outdoor seating area and Bocce ball court which is communal with another winery (tasting cannot be done in this area). We had a great time with Dallas who took time explaining a lot about their different wines and was very personable. There was another gentleman helping us at times and he was pleasant as well. I really enjoyed the white wines which was a shocker. When Dallas found out we were locals he surprised us by knocking 50% off of our tasting fee! We will be back for sure. Recommended to us by another tasting room in the building, we headed upstairs to try this new winery's offerings and were not disappointed. The owner himself poured, and allowed us to taste all of his wines. They are unique wines/blends-not your typical whites and reds-and tasting them with the man who created them was interesting and educational. We left with one bottle of the Tocai (white). Stopped in here during my visit to Monterey - amazing wine, and their redwood bar is unlike any other I've seen, and I've been to a lot of wineries!!!! Anyway, the owner and winemaker is a retired marine and makes amazing zinfandel and syrah - we went to four other tasting rooms in the Monterey/Carmel area, and his reds were top notch out of the whole group. My favorite wines were the Tocai Fruilano, Zin, and Syrah the glassware is the classiest too- go check it out! *****One pro tip - the building itself, which houses many other businesses (and two wineries), is very confusing. This place is a hidden gem that we found while checking out Carmel Valley. It's casual but really nice, and the gardens are beautiful to look at while sipping on some very unique wines. No Chardonnay here, I had never heard of several of their varietials. The Tocai white was a favorite for our group, as well as their Zinfandel.
