My family and I have used Rustika for many years for special occasions and decided to use them again for my sister's wedding. I provided the exact design and flavors that were needed and had to double check to make sure that one out of the 2 tiers was made specifically how I wanted it. I was convinced that everything I ordered was correct after myself and the employee who was in charge of consulting the order double checked the flavors. They mentioned the cake was going to have chocolate in it which was not what we wanted. On the day of the cake cutting, the cake in fact had chocolate. Very disappointing. The cake itself was made beautifully, but the flavors were absolutely not what was ordered. Another concern we had was the contamination of combining fresh flowers with food. The flowers that were used on the cake were fresh and did not have proper covering on the stems. It is recommended to use a barrier on flowers to avoid chemical and biological hazards. When bringing all this to the attention of the owner and the assisting employee, they were very rude and did not provide a reasonable solution. We will not use this merchant ever again or recommend to anyone. Very poor experience after using them for many years and spending thousands of dollars with them. read more

Really cute and cozy interior with about 10 tables for dining in, so this would be a great place to come for breakfast/light lunch. Stumbled across this place a couple of weeks ago but only wanted coffee at the time. I knew I wanted to go back soon for breakfast. They also have lunch items-soup/salad/sandwiches/pasta all day. The baked goods are also plentiful including empanadas. I came in with my mom and after we got our plates we realized we probably should've shared. We got Chorizo con Papas and the Garden Crepe (comes with moxed greens with fruit and nuts). The ingredients were super fresh. This is definitely a place I have to frequent to sample everything. I have nothing but mega praise for this hole in the wall bakery cafe. Order at the counter and your food is delivered to your table. I have eaten here every visit to Houston and each time it's been delicious. Awesomely awesome. Migas is just so good and the black bean are scrumptious but it's so much I just can't finish it all. You can have free refills of what ever beverage you choose and they have a variety of flavored teas. All are so good as I have tried most of them. The bakery area has all types of cookies and cakes which call your name but I'm not sure we're you would put it, so just do the right thing and get I to go for later. It is totally worth it. Especially the chocolate chip cookies. Oh my are they good. I had to share but sort of didn't want to. I will be back and highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Houston. read more

This place got the trifecta or bad restaurant: rude service, missing order, and bad food.... Went in and was greeted by a sneering clerk. She acted like she absolutely hates her job. She took my order and told me I can get only one side when menu clearly states two. When I pointed it out. She just dismissed me and said it will be fixed -- while doing nothing.... I use to love this place, customer service has gone down tremendously, and I am HUGE on customer service. I had recommend Justine and her business to my sister-in-law, and I regret it a lot. We ordered an entire dessert table for an event the following month. Due to Covid cases rising, we did the sensible thing and had to cancel the event. All of the other vendors, who are MOM & POP BUSINESSES AND WHO DO NOT HAVE MULTIPLE LOCATIONS, understood the matter and gave us a refund. But not Rustika! The entire amount, they refused to refund and decided on just doing store credit. I understand that people are trying to rebuild their business from when covid first hit, but if you can have multiple locations and claim to be really busy, I am pretty sure you can refund the amount or just only keep the deposit and refund the rest. Even if the every well known celebrity endorsed this place I would not go back, because of their customer service. Be smart and don't go here. read more

Let me start by saying i heard so many good things about this place before going. I ordered this cake for my niece birthday. My order began with a lot of excuses. I wanted black cream cheese frosting i was told it couldn't be done. After going back and forth. Finally agreed to something that came @$300. At pick up right of the bat it was not the cake i wanted. My initial reaction was oh wow vs the employees handing me the cake were raving about how much they liked it. The party was in a hour so me having no other choice i had to take it. Thinking maybe the taste will over shadow the presentation. But no. Cake was dry and honestly hard to swallow with anything to accompany the cake. But right off the bat look at the original photo and what they offered me it was not executed. It's obvious the cake it's not even a coffin shape so accept the mistake. The cake wasn't executed as promised and refund me my money but no they began to lie and not wanting to take responsibility. At this point i left it alone. Number 1 the cake was not executed it was not the shape it should of been. The dryness was disgusting and hard to even swallow. 2. Why am i going back and forth with this person lying saying the person that picked it up loved it. So now you are going to lie because i picked up the cake. 3. I'm asking for a manager not someone that took my order that i have to wait to come back from out of town? Where is the professionalism of addressing the issue right away??? 4.You are asking for my info? You took it when you took my order??? With that being said i just never responded. This was in October no one ever reached out to me to address the issues or give me a refund. I shouldn't have to take the cake for a taste test it's visible it wasn't executed by the shape alone. Alfajores, cookies, brownies, mini pies, petit fours, tres leches, and more. Here's what we got: * Oreo silk pie: delicious!!!! The inside had some moist cakey consistency which was surprisingly good! Just wish there were more Oreo crumbles/bits on top to up the texture/crunch factor. Would definitely get this again! * chicken empanada: filling was delicious and flavorful, but there was a bit too much bread and not enough filling for my taste. Wish the bread/empanada shell was a bit thinner for better balance. Comes with spicy delicious salsa (a bit too spicy for this spice wimp!) * key lime pie: crust was tasty & the filling was quite tart so good for people who like their key lime more tart & tangy * petit four: this was ok... not super impressed but maybe it's because I don't have a ton of experience w eating petit fours Not many people eating in the shop on a Saturday just before noon. First impressions: Lovely place that uses real silverware and nice napkins. Had the spinach egg empanadas, some type of raspberry pastry, and cinnamon scones. Excellent. Scones were exactly what scones are meant to be: fluffy flakiness yet dense, slightly sweet without being overwhelming, and lightly spiced. Cuban coffee was the perfect accompaniment. Out palates and stomachs were content. And then the waiter walked past carrying plates of quesadillas made with house made corn tortillas topped with queso fresco. My sister and I have been meeting halfway between our homes, going to one new place a month. The sight of those quesadillas has broken our habit. We now have to go to Rustika twice in a row. Perhaps we were given one of the display Birthday Cakes instead of a real one? Regardless, we spent $85.00 on what was intended to be a chocolate BIRTHDAY cake, with white buttercream icing and yellow flowers. It was picked up on February 7, 2024 for my birthday the next day. On inspection when we arrived the cake looked very pretty UNTIL the next day when we went to eat it. All I can honestly state is the chocolate cake was very oily (you read that right -OILY) with a taste that was similar to Crisco's shortening. The icing was NOT buttercream but rather a blend of Crisco shortening and Dream Whip. In totality it was not edible at all! To make sure our taste buds were functioning correctly we had our neighbors and three different friends eat a piece and ALL of them had to spit it out onto the paper towel after the first bite. Everyone was bragging about the cake at the wedding because the Strawberries and Cream was sooo different! Unfortunately, at the end of the wedding our top tier was thrown out. Really underwhelmed. I wanted a great croissant and a quick lunch and did not find that here. The croissants were dense with no flake and mediocre flavor. I was really hoping for quality in a real bakery, but Starbucks' croissants are tastier with better texture. The "chocolate croissant" was not on display when I ordered, unfortunately. It turned out to be one of their plain croissants, sliced and painted with some type of chocolate sauce. Again, Starbucks is far superior. I had a ham and cheese empanada and was similarly underwhelmed. The dough felt tough and dry. Someone else in our group got tomato basil soup which was apparently less soup and more mash, but I didn't try it myself. On the plus side, the cookies were good. We were also greeted immediately and they were patient while we made decisions. Definitely won't be going again unless we want cookies. Lunch review! Well we went at 4:30 but they still served lunch.. they may even serve breakfast all day. I didn't ask tho. I've been looking for something like the bakery in my hometown (shout out RJ's what uppp) and although it's not exactly the same food, I'll be coming back here frequently. For starters we shared a beef empanada that was probably cooked in the morning but still got my tastebuds going. Inside was stuffed with beef, peas and carrots + some bomb salsa on the side for dipping. Flavor points, check! 4/5 only because there was a little too much dough for my liking. Next - The "petite" potato soup was twice the size of any side I've got anywhere else & it was twice the soup too. Moderate chunky-ness 3/5 but they killed the creamy broth flavor 5/5. *side note* The "cup" size equalled at least 4 cups at places like Panera and don't even get me started about the "bowl". They serve some heallltthhyy portions and we aren't complaining. To complete our over ordering we selected the full club sandwich and full turkey and cheese sandwich - both hot & larger than my face. I should've have listened when we were offered the half petite soup / half sandwich combo. Good flavor but next time I'll get it on different bread. Served with a side of chips and salsa that are also above average in the flavor department. 3/5 with hopes that the different bread will reach a 4/5. Coffee was a 5/5 but just the usual and nothing too fancy. I eyeballed the bakery items the entire time but could not allow myself to order another thing. Probably would have ended up with a cinnamon roll, mini apple pie & cream cheese pastry. Will review bakery items next time. If you find yourself pissed and stopped in traffic along 59, do yourself a favor and stop by this little slice of a hometown bakery. read more
