I've been to Russo's Coal Fired Italian Kitchen a couple of times now, once for dine-in on a weeknight and once for takeout on a busy Saturday. This Richardson spot (right off Campbell near Central Expressway) does a lot right with its signature 7,000-pound coal-fired oven, delivering that distinctive crispy, slightly charred New York-style thin crust that folds beautifully when done well. It's a nice step up from standard chain pizza without being overly pretentious. The Highlights: * The pizza is the clear star when it hits. The crust has a satisfying snap and subtle smokiness from the coal fire, with fresh-tasting sauce and quality cheese that doesn't overwhelm. Favorites from our visits included the classic pepperoni (generous toppings, not too greasy) and a mushroom-truffle oil pie that felt elevated. They also offer a Robusto sauce special with fresh basil, EVOO, and homemade mozzarella that brings nice traditional Italian flavors. The giant 28-inch party pies look impressive for groups or events. * Gluten-free options stand out positively -- both the GF pizza and pasta were handled carefully and tasted surprisingly close to the regular versions, which is a big win for anyone with sensitivities. * Appetizers like garlic knots and calzones were tasty and filling. Salads (Caesar or Greek/Mediterranean) stayed fresh and crisp. Desserts, especially the tiramisu or zeppoli when available, provided a light, satisfying finish. * The atmosphere works well for casual Italian dining: you can see the flames from the oven, the space feels classy yet relaxed, and it's suitable for small groups, families, or a quick business lunch. Lunch specials and various deals (including dinner-for-two or party packages) help with value. Pro tip: Check recent specials (they rotate things like the Robusto pie), confirm gluten-free needs in advance, and aim for off-peak times if service speed matters. For big groups, the large-format pies and catering options are handy. Service is phenomenal when Ive been.

Place is well maintained and cleaned. Placed order to go. Service was friendly. Food didn't take long to make. Order east coast calamari and side salad. Food was good. Made fresh and not chewy. Wish I was here often so I could try them again. Thanks for the great experience as I visited Dallas.

Came with a group of colleagues after a meeting and we were all impressed. Staff was friendly and served us quickly. They have lunch specials that are filling, plus I had leftovers. Their pistachio pesto chicken pasta was delicious (but a bit oily). Their calzones are huge! Their truffle mushroom bruschetta was so good! They have a few halal options which is great for anyone who needs that. Definitely a place we'll be checking out again.

Visited this restaurant to try the chicken Alfredo and found hair in my food. I'm sure the other options on the menu might be better

Overall a pretty good spot for a small group. We had 7 people on Sunday after church. Food was good. Nothing extraordinary but good solid stuff. We had pizzas, calzones, salads and the scampi. Good enough to go back and try some more.

Nice little spot in Eastside.. kind and attentive service. We only ordered pizzas, so I can't say anything about the pastas, but all of our pizzas were pretty enjoyable. The Truffle Burrata Prosciutto was a bit on the oily side, but was pretty good overall. Each 12" pizza was around 17-20 dollars, which is pretty average for most higher end pizzas.

Went here on a Saturday night and disappointed with the service and food. They were short staffed I'm sure like everyone but it shouldn't take 15 mins for someone to address us for the first time at our table when there's people standing around behind the counter waiting on the phone to ring or someone to walk in and grab a to go order... we almost walked out. We weren't very hungry so ordered garlic knots and a cheese pizza. I will say the garlic knots were good, very flavorful. The cheese pizza was probably the worst cheese pizza I've ever had, had NO flavor. When I say no flavor I mean absolutely nothing, I thought I had Covid and couldn't taste my food for a minute! We were excited to try this place but was very disappointed, will not be returning.

New York village, Truffle burrata and prosciutto
Heidi Y.

We each got a slice on the way home!! Ordering was quick at the counter. The New York village was basically like a supreme, and we thought it wasn't that special. It almost took away the joy in eating a coal fired pizza. However, the truffle burrata and prosciutto--oh my goodness...it was amazing. The delicate flavors balanced so well with the coal fired dough. The cheese, truffle oil, and arugula made the pizza experience so gourmet. Would definitely come back for this one.

I know opinions are varied for Russo's. But I love the giant slice! Their ranch is also great. The service is usually good too.

The pizzas flavor were incredible, if you're a mushroom fan then the Funghi is for you. The San Marzano sauce flavor cuts thru and enhances the toppings, i couldn't stop eating. Seek this place out, if you're a true pizza fan, then you can't miss out on this!

Guys...what?? Whaaaat...?…read more The ratings for this place truly shock me. It's been a while since I've been to a restaurant where the Yelp rating so far exceeded the quality I experienced. We were there for a birthday dinner, bringing 11 people into a no-reservations restaurant on a Saturday evening. Gutsy? Maybe...except that we were the only people there at 6:30 pm, which was...odd, to say the least, for a Saturday evening. Then again, maybe not so odd, given the rest of the experience. First, I was carrying a boxed birthday cake. Should I have called ahead to ask if that was allowed? Yeah, probably -- but the plan HAD been to eat it at a food-friendly pottery painting place nearby. When that didn't happen for various reasons, I toted it along to the restaurant. Before I could even ask, the woman at the front of house (seemingly the owner? her kids were lounging restlessly in a booth in the corner) announced to me that they charge a PER-PERSON cake cutting fee. I was like um well I already spent $70 on this cake, so yeah, no thanks. I popped next door to Lockwood Distillery and asked them if we could eat our cake in there after dinner if I brought 10 alcoholics with me. They said sure. (Kudos, Lockwood, because they also serve food and desserts, but they ALSO apparently know how to seize an opportunity.) With the cake debacle behind us, we all sat down to look at the menu...which is when we realized that Farina In Grani doesn't appear to have a liquor license. The beverage menu was entirely non-alcoholic beers and wines, along with a sampling of sodas. So...that was kind of a bummer for a birthday dinner...but hey, the pizza was supposed to be good, so we stuck it out. (FWIW, I see another Yelp review describing the BYOB corkage fee as "ridiculous," so I can't imagine what they would have charged PER HEAD for cake cutting.) Well, then the pizza was...gosh there's just no way to put this nicely...it was bad. Tasteless dough that lacked the nice fluffy air pockets you want in a classic Neapolitan pizza crust. The tomato sauce was SWEET. It literally tasted like they'd added sugar to the tomato sauce. The spicy wagyu salami pizza thus had this weird sweetness to it that was in no way balanced by the very, very mild spice of the salami. The funghi pizza was so doused in fake truffle oil that it was almost sickening, and the cheese on that one was congealed in a way that was not at all appetizing. Someone near us ordered the Vesuvio, which came out with unmelted and seemingly pre-shredded cheese sprinkled on top. As for ambiance, there's a huge flatscreen TV that cycles through some of the most hilarious AI images of Italy...imagine yachts charging straight toward the shore; book pages flipping through glasses; etc. So at least that was good for a few laughs. Maybe it was just an off night, but between the ridiculous cake fee and the borderline inedible pizza, it was anything BUT a lovely birthday dinner for our sweet friend.
