if I could give zero stars to Russell Roofing I would. Don't be fooled by how great they say they are!!! Russell sold us an extremely expensive roof on our large architect designed house. They were the highest bidder and presented us with many reasons why Russell was the only game in town. We were told out and out lies. We have learned 7years later, and many roof leaks later, that the materials they used were the shoddiest, and the workmanship was slapdash. (It was amazing how quickly they finished the job). We just learned the ridge ventilation system they gave us is not the PVC system we paid for. The one we have is flimsy aluminum that other roofers have called 'obsolete' and is coming apart at the seams and nails are all popping out. It is not insured under the policy Russell told us it was, and is the cause of several leaks. Russell refuses to own up to this and fix it or compensate us for their wrong choice of materials. They want to sell us a different system that will hold up better in wind. ??? Just SAY NO to Russell! read more

The Importance of Customer Service in the Construction Industry As a homeowner who has participated in multiple large home renovations, primary to cost, customer service and reputation was the deciding factor when choosing the roofer. We had used Russel in the past and had an amazing interaction, review posted above. But unfortunately, this time around Russel did not make me feel like a valued customer. Their process for establishing a project timeline, purchasing material, and communicating with customer was more than disappointing, it was disheartening. We contracted Russel Roofing & Exteriors to install standing seam metal roof on our new kitchen bump out on February 26, 2021. Our deposit was received on March 8, 2021. Immediately after deposit was cashed, our contractor began reaching out to Russel, primary focus was to establish project timeline, aim to keep project on track for completion for week of April 5, 2021. Our contractor was not able to make direct contact with any Russell representative, was never called back. Our roof was not fully installed until November 9, 2021, after many months of calling the main office weekly. The final invoice was mailed out November 15, 2021. We would NOT recommend Russell Roofing & Exteriors based on their lack of customer service/consideration/care. read more

Travis, their sales rep. came out and gave us a very misleading sales pitch. He told us how Russell specializes in doing work on historic homes and how their work was superior to other roofers who were not trained at the level of their staff. We were willing to pay more with the understanding that we would be receiving exceptional workmanship. We had an active leak and he assured us that they would be out within 4-5 weeks and told us that he would put a push on the start time after receiving our deposit. That never happened. After many calls, they finally came out 5 MONTHS later and sent a crew that resembled a truckload of day workers that they picked up at Home Depot. They then called us to increase the price stating that they would need more materials. The work was sloppy from start to finish. The original tongue and groove soffits were split and broken because the used nails that were too long and came through and split the beams leaving the nails exposed which one of their staff told us was "normal!" Our neighbors on both sides repeatedly complained of trash, nails and cigarette butts on their properties. They broke things on the outside of our home and acted as if they were doing us a favor by replacing them. They also never gave us the promised warranty. We also had an additional leak start because they incorrectly installed the collar around a stack pipe on the roof. We've had multiple reputable contractors in our area come out and every single one of them pointed out things that were done incorrectly and not up to the professional standards that were promised. Several of them stated that it didn't appear to be done by professionals at all other than the high-end shingles we paid for. Our gutters were left in disarray with railings on our balcony that were broken and "repaired" using plastic zip ties. I invited the owner of the company over to see the "workmanship" that was delivered and to see if he thought that was acceptable for the ridiculous price we paid and the only people we heard from were people who were not even involved with the job or the contract. If anyone who is my neighbor in West Mt. Airy is considering this outfit, feel free to message me and you are more than welcome to come and see the work/ damage that was done to our home. Do yourself and your wallet a favor and find another contractor. This was absolutely the worst experience I've had in my lifetime with a contractor and I guarantee that no one that works for Russell Roofing would find this "work" acceptable for their own home. read more

Called to have a few shingles replaced. A technician came out to my home to assess the job. Two weeks later, no response from him or the company. No quote, no phone call, no e-mail. Nothing. Called to inquire about the quote for the work and the representative said she'd pass along my message and get back to me with more info. Again, radio silence. Inept way to run a business. Eventually, my home will need a roof replaced and Russell Roofing won't even get a chance to bid. Simply terrible. read more

Please please do NOT use this company!!! we hired Russel Roofing to put on a slate roof on our 1910 remodel of our home. We also hired them to put on copper gutters and downspouts. We spent months fighting with them to begin our job. They gave us false promises of start dates and after many many delays, they finally finished.they have been a nightmare ever since. Even though we spent tens of thousands of dollars, their service is just awful. I could go on and on about all the issues we've had, but there isn't enough words on this page. I am a realtor and work with homeowners and vendors all the time. I have a great relationship with them and are pleased to recommend them. I would never recommend these guys to anyone. I made the mistake, sending them to my daughter's house in an emergency to fix her roof and eventually replace it only to find roof nails coming hrough her ceiling and destroyed her interior wall. Shingles falling off. Save yourself from having to deal with them. They even used a photo of our home for advertising without our permission and even though we were a disgruntled client. Russell replaced my entire roof about 6 years ago and sold me a "lifetime" warranty that was supposed to cover manufacturer defects and workmanship. When the job was done (which was a nightmare that lasted far longer than it should have) the warranty company told me that the warranty was not valid due to the type of roof I have. Russell told me that they would give me an equivalent warranty but it would be only 40 years and not lifetime. A few shingles have fallen off recently, so I called to get them to do the repairs. The salesman came out and told me the repairs are not covered by the warranty. However, as a "favor" since I live on a busy road they will do the repairs in exchange for leaving their lawn sign on my property for an extended period of time. I don't want to advertise their company as I have been cheated by them, so I had another contractor come to do the work. He told me that Russell had used the wrong number of nails per shingle and that is why they are falling off. I would NEVER use Russell again. Their workmanship is not good, they lied about the warranty and to top it off their estimate was $5000 higher than the other company I was going to use. After taking a SUBSTANTIAL deposit from us 5 months ago, there has been zero communication about the project start date or other issues on a proactive basis. Every date that they have provided for when work would begin has been missed with no explanation and no communication. Calls have never been returned. Emails are minimally responded to. We contracted them to replace a bad gutter that was causing water intrusion in our house. The estimator told us they had a backlog of 14 weeks, and when I balked he said not to worry and that nobody ever has to wait the whole time. Well, it took them not only that whole time to start the job but they were literally 1 week shy of the 45 day limit past the estimated start date, at which point we could have legally demanded our deposit returned. So don't believe what they say, or get it in writing. Their communication is awful. Every time the schedule slipped, we only found out about it when my wife called to see if we had been moved up. Our neighbors considered hiring them too, before we had issues, but the estimator skipped their scheduled appointment then dodged all their follow up calls. When they finally started working they told us it would be a 3-day job but then took all week in clear weather. When we were a couple weeks past the estimated start date, I contacted them to get our deposit back since they were projecting early- to mid-December, which would have been like 50-60 days past the start date. They said they'd have to charge 20% of the total cost because that's how much paperwork was involved in just scheduling the work. The end product, at least, is decent but I would never contract with them again or recommend them. read more

Work needed to be done for our pending house sale. Project Mgr came out end of June, quoted $500, said they would be out the following week. The PM called back a few days later, said his Production people WOULD NOT do the work for the contracted amount but would for an additional $250 and it would be done before the end of July. No one showed up in July. An initial crew came out the first week in August and said they could not do the work for $750. I spoke with the Project Manager, he said they would need $1,800 to do the work. I said I needed the work done as promised and would try to work with them as I was getting desperate. I asked if there was some way to at least meet in the middle. He called back, said he found a mistake in his calculations and that they could do the work for $1,127 (conveniently midway). I asked him to go back and see if we could agree on the midway point between his new calculations and the agreed-upon contract amount. He said he did and they would not budge. Caught in a bind, I agreed. He said they would be back out the first week of August. No one showed the rest of the first week of August. I left a message on Friday that if someone was not out Monday the second week of August, I was going to call the President of Russell Roofing on August 8th. They finally showed up on Tuesday, August 9. The workers that did the work were courteous and did good work. I believe they did a very good job. I believe Russell Roofing has problems with their customer service, project estimating and coordination between their project management and production supervision. Had I not initiated the work so far in advance of the close date, I would have been screwed. Based on my first experience with them, I believe Russell Roofing is good for high-end big projects where timing and cost are not critical. If you have a small project ( below $3,000) and looking to have it done quickly and cost effectively, I would look elsewhere. read more

These guys are great for selling you on a job, but don't believe the hype, they don't stand behind their work. A guarantee from Russell Roofing is not even worth the paper it's written on. I should add this tip. Don't sign any contract with these guys without shopping around first. My personal experience is that Russell Roofing will quote you anywhere from 30% to 40% more than any other local roofer, and tell you how they take care of their staff, and your satisfaction is their number one priority, and how you "get what you pay for", but it's all just a big con job. It was suggested that we have a flat portion of our roof, which has some sort of membrane on it, inspected intermittently following our home inspection. It's up high and I don't even have a ladder that will reach it. That was 4 years ago. When I finally got around to having someone out, Ryan came to our house and inspected the roof. He did not recommend any work as it was in good shape. He was on time, professional and honest. Estimator came out on a Wednesday to inspect my roof and to give me a quote. In addition to a full house roof replacement, we were interested in paying for an additional four skylights to be installed. I was told we would have an estimate via email by Thursday, Friday at the latest. When I didn't receive the estimate by Wednesday the following week, I texted Chad, when I didn't receive a text back by Friday, I called their office. I was told they would check into it and call me back. That was two weeks ago! I guess they are just too busy!! read more

They required that I be home for the quote so I stayed home that day to meet them. After a few days of not receiving the quote, I followed up and they again said they would send the quote over. I really don't like writing something negative about a business on social media but I would want to know about their behavior before I did business with them. Hopefully this will help inform your decision. Russell Roofing put a new roof on the townhouse next to mine. During the process they left significant amounts of debris on my property. They needed daily reminders to clean up their mess and after the job was finished, they left nails, metal shards, shingle debris and wood on my front patio. Despite two polite emails and their crew being on site today, nothing was done to address the issue. I understand that roofing is a messy business and would be fine if they cleaned up my property as they did their customer's every day, but leaving debris on someone's front porch is not a behavior that I would want in any contractor that I hire. After this experience, I believe it was a good decision to not do my roof at the same time as my neighbor. I will be choosing someone else to replace mine when the time comes. read more

I am a general contractor who called Russell for a price to do a large slate roof job. I thought their sales approach was better than any other roofer I've met, but their proposal consisted of boilerplate language and stock drawings. It was material that all other quality roofers know but only Russell included in their presentation. I can see a homeowner being favorably impressed with this presentation but for a general contractor, it was just standard stuff out of a roofing manual. Their price was about 30% more expensive than the other equally qualified roofers, whose prices were all pretty tightly grouped. (I was only seeking quotes from roofers that I knew had lots of experience with slate roofs.) This was a large job so the 30% differential was huge. In another instance, I was called in to look at a water leak problem for a past customer who had independently contracted with Russell to do their entire roof over two years prior. Their roof was old and ready to be replaced, plus they had a leak near a fireplace which was an added incentive to get a new roof. The new roof was installed but the leak near the fireplace persisted. They called Russell back and their solution was to go up on the roof and use a lot of caulking around any possible source of the leak. In my opinion and professional experience, quality roofers NEVER fix a problem with caulk--they prefer to figure out the source of the leak and fix the shingles or flashing--because caulking will not last as long as the roof itself. The problem still persisted even after the caulking episode and the owner called me in for a 2nd opinion. I gave them the name of another roofer. read more

In January we had Russell Roofing do mansard replacement work, shingle replacement,gutter etc. This was the second time they worked on our house, the first was in spring 2019 where they did a flat roof on our third floor. Both times we were very satisfied. The roof done seven years ago has held up great with no leaks.Both times we found them easy to deal with, a great value, good quality work done by very skilled roofers. I wish I could give zero stars! Normally I don't give companies a bad review. I don't want to tarnish someone's business especially if they are kind, I always feel bad. In this instance, I had to write this to let everyone know about Dan Simpson from Russell & let people know he is the rudest, most entitled sounding sales person I have ever met in my life! The fact that somebody this caustic works in sales is appalling! First, I had one of their estimators out to my house. He was very nice, but inexperienced & gave me wrong information about the condition of my roof. I called Russell back to ask if they could send somebody that had a little more experience to assess my roof. This is when Dan Simpson came out to my house. After doing his inspection, he did admit his first estimator was wrong in his assessment. I asked Dan for an estimate and told him that I need to have a couple more people out to compare what they think the problem is & get prices. I told him that I was looking for who was going to assess and fix the problem correctly & have the best price. This is when Dan told me that that comment was a "red flag" and that I wasn't "a good fit for their company". I said I want to make sure I get the best deal, he said exactly. Our customers don't do that. I asked "so your customers just have one company (yours) come out & you tell them whatever you want & give them a price & they say ok and don't bother to shop around or get other opinions?" He said yes most of the time. He told me he was not giving me an estimate because it takes time to put together and he knows he will charge me more money than anyone else so there's no point. I want the best price so I wouldn't choose Russell so therefore am not a good fit for his company. I was shocked and surprised and I told him to leave immediately. What really upset me was that the company initially sent out someone who didn't know what he was doing. Then when I asked for someone who knows what they are doing, they send Dan who refused to understand that I have been given conflicting information and need to get a second, or third, opinion. If you want to pay more money than any other company, be told you need things you actually don't & have an arrogant salesman that will make you feel like getting a second opinion is a crime then go with Russell. If you actually would like to comparison shop, get a fair price & work with someone that is empathetic go someplace else! Russell should really reevaluate who they hire. A sales person is someone who works with the public and should have a personality to match that regardless of whether or not they will eventually make the sale. Customer service should be their number one priority. With Russell, or at least with Dan Simpson, it clearly is not. read more

Russell Roofing put a new roof on our house in 2011. The previous roof had been leak free for 25 years but our very expensive Russell roof leaked the first winter it was on. The spouting was installed incorrectly and caused a leak which resulted in significant interior damage. It took numerous calls to get them out to fix the problem and though they did improve the situation eventually, the process was difficult. They did not repair any interior damage - that was left for us to do. I just had work done by Russell Roofing on my home and want to give them the kudos they deserve. I've been a customer for years now. Had my roof done 15 years ago and it still looks good as new. Just had some chimney and gutter work done and had to give a special thanks to all involved.The staff working on my house couldn't have been nicer and the work ( as I've always experienced in the past ), was exceptional. Most expensive quote we got (repairing a chimney), but what they were offering seemed to be more. The job was put off for months, to the point where it was coming up against a vacation we had planned. I said three separate times that I didn't want them doing work when I wasn't home, but they came anyway. When I called to complain, they gave me the runaround and the manager never called me back. The actual work seems to be fine, and that's the only reason I gave 2 stars instead of one. The icing on the cake? They send me a cheerful email asking me to give a 5 star yelp review. Our sole purpose for contacting Russell Roofing is because we had a water leak coming in our kitchen ceiling. We signed a contract with Russell Roofing on 5/11/2010 to correct a water leak that was entering the kitchen ceiling during particularly heavy rainstorms. A $525 deposit was handed over at the contract signing. On the morning of 6/11/2010, the Russell Roofing crew came out to perform the necessary repairs. I was home at the time and witnessed the entire operation. After about three hours or so, they came to me and said they were finished. I noticed that the siding was not replaced and they mentioned to me that they felt it was in fine shape and didn't need replacement. They assured me that their work should fix the leak problem and I should discuss the siding issue with the project manager to revise the final invoice to reflect the lower material and labor costs. About a month later the real problems started. In mid July we had a big Thunderstorm that dumped several inches of rain on our area of Montgomery county. During the storm, water started leaking into the kitchen ceiling in the same spot as before. I immediately called the project manager and informed him of our issue. After a week or so he came out and looked at where the water leaked into the kitchen. I mentioned that perhaps they should do a water test with a hose to ascertain the exact location of the leak, rather than just guess. A repairman came out and made a few adjustments to the shingles and flashing and left. I was told the problem was now corrected. In September we had a huge rainstorm that dumped 5-6 inches of rain in a day. Guess what - more leaking into the kitchen! This time the water was leaking in at a much faster rate in the same area. Since I had the direct number of the repair manager (which he gave to me on a business card), I left him a message to call me immediately. The next morning I called and also left a message with the project manager and re-communicated our ongoing issue. After a few days I finally got a return call. Eventually the repair manager came out to the house and started to do more investigative work. After pulling some of the plaster away in the kitchen ceiling we both noticed a piece of "J channel" that was wedged in the ceiling. This piece apparently was channeling water into the kitchen from an unknown location. The repair manager pulled some siding and flashing off and looked around but could not find the leak source.At that point the repair manager stated that this was another area of the siding that was not reflected in the original contract and he would need to talk to the project manager. No further work was done and he packed up and left. This was on 10/8. The following Friday (10/15), the project manager called me and said that they would need to pull off other areas of the siding to search for the leak, and that would be additional work. Sensing that he was fishing for more money, I quickly commented that Russell Roofing had failed in their diagnosis and repair of the leak I contracted them to fix. He mentioned he would discuss this internally with other members of his team and get back to me on Monday with a plan. Monday (10/18) came and went with no call and by Friday (10/22) I called him back and left a voicemail reminding him of our unresolved issue. He called back several hours later and said that they would come out with two technicians for $250 per hour to remove the other siding to find the leak. I immediately retorted that I should not have to pay additional money since the leak I contracted them to fix was not resolved. I added that I basically paid $1,500 for a new section of roof I didn't need, an undiagnosed water leak from the start of the project and I was screwed out of new siding which was specified in the contract. The project manager had the nerve to mention his technician came out several times previously without any charge to me! This was because I had water leaking into my kitchen that they were supposed to repair! At this point I decided I needed to escalate this to the owner of Russell Roofing for an acceptable resolution. The owner called me back within the day. Basically he reiterated that our house has some sort of pre-existing condition and he would send technicians out at a per hour cost to me. He also would not guarantee that the leak would be corrected. However if I wanted a guarantee, he would write up a separate bid for a whole new project. I communicated to him that my biggest gripe was that this job was poorly diagnosed from the beginning (no water test, assumption that it was the roof leaking). Well I'm not a satisfied customer. This is one of the worst customer service experiences that I have ever encountered. Basically I threw $1,500 down the drain and my leak is not fixed. Amazing experience and literally the best Roofing Company out there in the Tri State area. I've seen my fair share. First, I called for a new gutter and downspout system and Dan, the project manager came out right away, (the only company I called to do this) provided options and an estimate respectful of our budget. He also asked to see the roof and after a thorough assessment discovered hail damage. He helped us fight with the insurance company and then spent a lot of time to educate us on the best new roof options and how they would work with the pitches and valleys of our roof. So we ended up with a new roof and gutter system which work hand in hand to withstand changing weather conditions. We also got several other estimates to be sure and Russell was 15% less then 4 other 5 star competitors. I believe a good estimate comes from the questions you ask and the knowledge you already have of your own home. The service has been unbelievable and better then any company I've dealt with in more then 35 years of owning several homes. Dan has even been back several times to look over things here and there on the gutter and downspouts. My house looks amazing.. so much so, we ordered all new Marvin Windows. Have to agree 100% with the reviewer from 9/29/2015. Emphasis on Sales and Marketing (lots of emails about extolling their workmanship and customer service) but complaints are basically glossed over. Horrible cleanup, you do not get Russell Roofing personnel when they do the job (seriously, go get pricing from independents, if you go with Russell you get them anyway and pay more), and frankly I am suspect of the workmanship when it only took two days to rip off a slate roof and install a new one. The speediness of the job explains the sketchiness of the clean up. Go elsewhere. read more

Very disappointing. They did not resolve our roof problems. They kept changing personnel assigned to us suggesting to spend an outrageous amount of money. The follow up was pathetic. Their claim was that unless they changed the whole roof, they can not guarantee the job. They said 'do the repair and it will last 15-20 years or replace the roof and it will last a lifetime.' We did the repairs for $12,000 and the leaks got worse! THEN they said we had to replace the whole thing.
