So I've been seeing Dr. Masunaga for decades. What I like is his no nonsense approach to my dental care. You can take or leave his advice, but he will always help and monitor your oral health. He won't make you feel ashamed if one needs tooth help. I want the least work done and I maintain my appointments so I can hopefully delay what might have to be inevitably done. He is friendly, to the point and seems to do procedures professionally quick. He also does teeth whitening and Botox injections. read more

Dr Masunaga was my dentist for years. I spent thousands of $$ for him to improve my teeth. He repeatedly did some of the work and continued to charge me. At one point I had simply to say enough. I kept hoping he would do it correctly. He kept acting as if his poor workmanship was my fault. And I felt as if I was the chosen cash cow. I kept hoping he would get it right. Silly me. No all the work was poorly done according to another dentist that I went to. At one point I was hospitalized for septicemia and was very ill. I was told it was likely from the dental work that was done, dental work that had to be redone. I ended up with much less than optimal teeth and nothing done to correct it. Dr Masunaga supposedly have me a credit of approximately $8000 but I have yet to get a call or a check. I like the women in the office. Dr Masunaga is nice. He's got brothers and a father who are dentists too. He even graduated from my Alma mater, UCLA. But it just didn't work out. He messed up my teeth and I gave him a LOT of $$ to do it. Maybe do yourself a favor if you are new and check out his prices and compare with other dentists. Also office staff told me that he was on the panel for my dental PPO. I received back information from my insurance company that he was not. Someone had apparently neglected to send back something to the insurance company so he was no longer an approved provider. I'm not particularly happy to leave such a negative review but my experience with this dentist was rather nightmarish. And disheartening sines I ended up with worse teeth and lots less money than I started out with. Be warned. Maybe you will be luckier than I was with your treatment. Then again, maybe not. read more

I've been going to Dr. Masunaga for the past 9-years and I must say he is THE BEST! In the past I have had horrible experiences with going to the dentist and feared just the thought of going in for cleaning! On my very first visit to Dr. Masunaga it was pleasant and soon the fears/jitters diminished each time I went in for cleaning or treatment. Although its a small office, the front desk staff, dental assistants and hygienist is always, always friendly, personable and professional. I don't mind the drive to Kalihi from Pearl City, they have lots of free parking and hardly any traffic on a Saturday morning! If you're looking for a good dentist, call them at 848-8880! read more

Do not come here! I came here because I had a repaired chip on my tooth that came off. I only came here because I had no dental insurance at the time and a friend recommended him. Instead of of just repairing the small chip he recommended a crown because it would look better and last longer. I followed his advice and it was a nightmare I'll never forget. The day after my temporary crown I woke up in horrible pain. When I went in I was told I'd need a root canal. When I asked why he blamed it on preexisting damage to my tooth. Funny that this small chip was over 1.5 years old with no problems. He then put on a new crown that broke off the same day. Another one was out on the next day that stank within 2 days. He then put on another one which chipped and stank as well. He had no explanation other than this is normal, you never know what happens with tooth repair. When I finally got my permanent crown it stank and chipped within days and had to be replaced. I got it replaced and it stank and he had no legitimate reason. This new crown eventually chipped again... Luckily at this point I had my dental insurance back. I went to my normal dentist who put in a temp crown and base due to Masunaga's shoddy work. I was so traumatized by Masunaga's work I left this temp crown on for 3 years... Yes 3 years! When Masunaga's permanent crown couldn't even last a week. I know have a permanent crown that works fine. However due to Masunaga's shoddy work I'm told I'll need an full implant eventually. Btw my good friend went through a similar situation. He lost a tooth and needed a root canal because Masunaga broke off a piece of his drill bit in his filling. I still deal with issues with my tooth till now, hence the review. Do yourself a favor and go to a real dentist. read more

Consumers beware! I am here to warn you to keep away from Dr. Russell Masunaga. The root canal work he did on me turned out to be incomplete and left a broken file in the tooth cavity that was never brought to my attention. His work also left me with an infection and a crown that repeatedly fallen off four times! He recemented the crown at free of charge but he's never taken the time to determine the actual cause and instead he repeatedly question if I grind my teeth, which I don't. A year and half later I finally seek out to another dentist who revealed the work Dr. Masunaga had done and I was sent to a specialist because of it. It was recommended to me that the root canal and crown should both be redone and the crown repeatedly fallen off because the tooth was too short. I reported these findings to Dr. Masunaga who insist that not all tooth can be saved and that he did the best he could. Now if we could all just do our best and scam other's money then we would all be quite wealthy. He did eventually reverse the dental insurance claims as a courtesy, not because he admit fault. Although he reversed the insurance claims he refused to refund the copay which totaled to $1200. Look elsewhere if you are looking for a good dentist. You don't want to end up in the same predicament as I did. read more

I've asked continually about getting veneers and he's always said "Jen you don't need them" yes I'm vain & just wanted them to have that Hollywood white smile! My teeth have always been straight and pretty white (his whitening treatment is amazing and doesn't leave my teeth sensitive) however I still wanted them whiter. Unlike any other dentist who pressures people into spending money on unnecessary things he told me the truth and only after years of asking about them he finally said okay if that's what you really want we'll do it. He took multiple impressions of my teeth to ensure a comfortable fitting temporary while the veneers were being made in Las Vegas and today I received my dream smile! His office staff is SO caring and friendly! He took his time and I can tell he really wanted to do his BEST job, as always! My husband, son & daughters go to him and we all love him! He is truly the very best dentist I've ever went to! I'm a huge chicken when it comes to needles, but he uses techniques to reduce the pain and anxiety! Heard Dr. Masunaga on the radio. He can talk the talk, but wrecked my teeth.. He broke a tooth while probing around in my mouth. Every cap he put on my teeth fell off after a few months and he took no responsibility for his work. A second opinion on my caps from another Dentist was, "that the caps were not done properly and would have to be redone, if I did not want them to keep falling off." read more

I had the same experience as several others. I had crown work done, and they kept falling out. I decided to go to another dentist, and he asked me who my previous dentist was due to the poor workmanship. My new dentist was able to fix the crown the first time around. I feel bad for leaving this review, but hopefully it will save others thousands of dollars. The staff was very accommodating though. read more

Description of Experience: Okay, so I have stained teeth mostly due to massive amounts of Tetracyline anti-biotics given to me as a small kid. Also some regular food stains. So what does this dentist do? Each and every time he practically yells at me "BLACK TEETH, BLACK TEETH!". Every time I went for an exam. Everytime I went for a consultation. For my cleanings by the hygienist/chairside assistant. Each and every visit during my subsequent new bridge procedure (thousands of dollars there.) "BLACK TEETH!" dentist matsunaga exclaims.... "BLACK TEETH!!!" Now mind you, simple discoloration of teeth is not a health problem but a cosmetic one. I don't give a rip about my teeth's color! Yet time and time again, he would almost yell at me, "BLACK TEETH, BLACK TEETH!". I almost felt like yelling back at him "waddle waddle flabby flabby pasty looking old lady goose neck you got there doc!!! You look so flabby too! out of shape too!!" beejeepers. The bridge work he did in my mouth is fine. I just can't stand his "bedside" manners. Look you go to a dentist and you are essentially TRAPPED AND HELD PRISONER in the dentist chair. Can't move, can hardly breathe. Trapped! The least any dentist can do is make it as pleasant a time as possible, not constantly yelling "BLACK TEETH! BLACK TEETH!" This review is 5 months overdue, so finally here it is. I've had several other dentists over the years, along with many bad experiences. The last one performed an unnecessary root canal. I started going to Dr Masunaga about 15 years ago, after a couple of years of helping produce his radio show. I've have found him to be really on top of his game, knowing all the latest techniques, with very minimal pain, and time in the chair. This past 4th of July, (on a Friday) while moving into my new condo, I broke one of my front teeth completely off. I was freaked out to say the least, and figuring I'd have to wait until Monday before I would be able to see the Dr. I called the office line and left a message explaining my situation. To my complete surprise, Dr called me back in about an hour telling me that he didn't want me to have to go through the weekend with a missing front tooth. He said he would call to see if he could get one of his dental assistants to come in, and that, regardless, he would meet me at his office at 2:30pm. I arrived at his office, and he was waiting for me, along with his assistant, who had left a family gathering to help out. He put in a post and reattached my broken tooth in short order. I was so happy for such unbelievable service! Now I ask you, how many dentists would drop everything on the 4th of July to help a patient?! A big mahalo to Dr Masunaga and staff!! read more

I would like to sincerely thank Dr. Masunaga and his staff for the wonderful dental care they are providing me, and my family. We switched from another dentist to Dr. Masunaga due to insurance reason, but we are definitely receiving better dental care. Yes I have only seen doc once, but I can honestly say he answered all my questions. He also eased my mind about what my previous dentist had told me. RIPPED OFF!!! Don't go to Dr. Russell Masunaga. He did a crappy job on my crown and about three other fillings. I ended up having to go to another dentist to fix it all. It was just such a horrible experience. Dr. Masunaga told me that he did everything write and that it is in my mind that my teeth hurt. Every time I took a bite of food I knew it wasn't in my mind. I had to pay out of pocket thousands of dollars to get all the work fixed. Save yourself any pain...don't go to this office. The only thing good about his office is the nice staff...but the moment you have a problem...you will realize the lack of skill is just not worth the happy staff. read more

Carole is no longer there. I only went there because I heard she was excellent. Had a terrible cleaning by the new Hygienist. Dr. Russell Masunaga was not very friendly. He does not listen. He smelled like alchohol when he was talking to me. Staff was not very friendly. I will not go back. I will not refer anyone. I heard most of there long time staff left except for one girl at the front whom you can tell had a phony personality. Office was not professional. read more
