The attendant on site at this Denman Street optical business in my neighbourhood was quite indifferent to me until I explained the nature of my visit. He then looked at my glasses, recognized the manufacturer and quoted a ridiculous charge for a nose cushion replacement; it was quite evident that he pre-judged me and inflated the charge to what he believed I would pay - SO WRONG! BIG MISTAKE! Obviously he's never seen the movie "Pretty Woman"! This business has no concept of what constitutes customer service - find another optical business for your vision and eyewear needs - Rx and non-Rx! If this store is for real, they are not worthy of your business; go to where they understand and value customer service regardless of 'perceived' appearance. read more

Lousy Service, treated like I was an idiot. There was a problem with the manufacture of the lenses, and his (the Owner's) approach was to tell me it was all my fault. He kept telling me how long he had been in business and what did I know about eyeglasses (despite having worn them for 20+ years!). His tactics work, you finally get disgusted with dealing the this guy. Oh yes, the first time you walk in, he is YOUR FRIEND!! Until you start demanding the quality you paid for (not cheap), and he has already billed you, it's the bait and switch and why are you still bothering me response. I broke my frames, in a fall on a trip from Seattle to Vancouver. My host said there was an eyeglass store right down the street. So I went to Rumi's. The person, who I assumed was the owner, was great in trying to find frames that would fit my lenses. The first frame he showed me was way out of my price range, but the second one, a prodesign...denmark was perfect and at a normal retail price. The first pair he showed me he said were $395, and that seems exorbitant, so four not five stars. read more

Oct 3/12 Don't even bother to goto the local competitors "Eyewrx" or "urban eyewear". This mom and pop establishment is the place to be. The pleasant salesperson promptly understood my eyeglass problem and provided an instant remedy. Having no cash on hand I was told to simply bring the $2 whenever I'm next in the area. Wow. I offered debit, an immediate run to the bank and even coffee on me-but he wouldn't hear if it. Wow. (The screw for one of the arms had partially unwound and because the arms are spring mounted, only a specialized screw versus the wrong regular screw-would correctly align and once again tighten). read more

I always try to shop in my neighborhood whenever I can but it never occurred to me to shop for my eyeglasses in the neighborhood I always went to the downtown and uptown optical stores, thinking that is where I could buy the latest designs. One day on my way to coffee I stopped in and Mo, the owner, as it turns out showed me a pair of eyeglasses. They were perfect every time I wore them I got compliments. Three years later I have bought at least six pairs of eyeglasses from him. I Used to torture myself sending friends photos asking them what they thought of the glasses on me when trying to choose a frame. Even though I'm in the design business I could never figure out the right frame for my face with the kind of forward styling that I was looking for. Now I don't even bother to look if I'm in need or want of a pair of glasses I just ask Mo and he is sure to pick one that suits me perfectly never fails to get me the attention that I seek! Never ahard-sell, if he feels something that is coming and that will be better he lets me know. I am also a cyclist and had a very hard time finding a frame that would work for cycling and my prescription. It never fails when I'm doing big rides people compliment me on my glasses. On a recent trip to Puerto Vallarta became known at the hotel as the guy with the great glasses..... I'm not always the easiest customer and once I decide I want something I want right away and Mo has repeatedly been very fast and efficient with the service. read more

I got my first pair of prescription glasses from Rumi with a Groupon for $200 off. The optician also did an eye exam for me. He was kind and let me try on all sorts of glasses, without pressuring me to get any particular ones. The service was great! When I got my glasses the next week one lens turned out to be less clear than the other one. However, they fixed it for me in 3 days and I am now happy with my glasses :) read more

I went to Rumi Optical with two sets of frames my boyfriend had purchased for me. I was looking to get an eye exam and basic lenses put in. Other optometrists had quoted me anywhere from $100-130 per pair of glasses, simply for lenses, as well as an additional $85 for a sight exam. I called Rumi Optical and was pleasantly surprised! I was told that the total would be $170 for BOTH pairs of glasses! When I arrived, I was greeted by the friendly optometrist who immediately had me in for my sight test (which was free with the lens purchase, I might add!) He was kind, quick and attentive to my needs. He also mentioned he would give me cases for my new glasses free of charge. My frames will be ready in 5 business days or so, so I will write another review when I get them. All in all, I give Rumi Optical a 5 star rating because customer service was great, the atmosphere was calm and quiet, and I was given an amazing deal! I would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a knowledgable, reasonably priced optometrist. (Did I mention he wrote my receipt so that I would get my lenses fully covered by my medical? Awesome.) read more

Nice and trendy little store, I was looking for some MauiJims when I passed by this place. The gentleman was very helpful in giving me selections and offering he could order the ones that he didn't have in stock (I had looked up a few models online before hand, but wanted to try them on my face). I found the prices quite reasonable to the time and care that he put helping me decide on the frame. Where elsewhere I am still paying the same amount, but sellers often too bored to help. Excellent and thorough eye exam by Dr. Daryl. I suspected issues with my left eye and after a detailed examination the problem was discovered and I was given a prescription. I decided to look at glasses in the store. The clerk helped me to pick a style of frames and then took me through a number of options to find the pair I liked the best (we went through several dozen glasses before I found the right ones). Rumi's Optical is my favorite place to buy glasses and contacts. I've been to a few stores in Vancouver and tried online, and my experience at Rumi has them all beat. The prices are very good, and they're not only skilled at their jobs, but are incredibly helpful. II had some issues with a pair of glasses (my fault) and they were immediately able to fix them. I like supporting local businesses, and Rumi Optical makes it easy by being the best. It's so good I've referred two people who've also loved their experience there as well. I looked around at a lot of different optical shops and honestly this place lives up to it's great reviews! I came in a little bit early for my appointment and was able to immediately be helped. After a free eye exam (it's free if you're purchasing glasses) I was taken over to the eyeglass counter and the gentleman who helped me took his time with helping me pick out glasses and we found something both in my price range as well as a look that would suit me. The price point I considered very reasonable for designer glasses and with the current promotion I was able to get two pairs of glasses for the price of one. Highly recommended! I knew I needed new glasses and I found several different deals on groupon for different optical stores. After comparing the deals and making an online research, I decided to go with Rumi Optical because it had both a good deal and great reviews. I'm glad I did! When the owner of the store and optician asked me how much I wanted to pay, I said I wanted to find a good pairs of glassesfor as cheap as possible. He directed me to a section where the cheapest glasses were. I didn't find anything I liked, so I then tried on some more expensive glasses, but the optician went back to the "cheap" section and helped me find some glasses like I wanted: simple and preferably plain black or purple. The glasses I got weren't exactly the way I wanted, as they are black on the outside and green on the inside, but I love them anyways. When I tried them on, he told me that they looked better on me than some other models (which i found to be true). Although he didn't pressure me to buy them, he encouraged me to buy those instead of more expensive ones, because they resembled the style I wanted and were also amongst the cheapest, as per my preference. Bottom line: the optician was very attentive to what I wanted and helped me look for and find glasses that corresponded to what I told him I wanted. He didn't rush me into anything and let me try on as many glasses as I wanted to. There was a misfit with my glasses, so I came back to the store 3 times to arrange that: at first, I thought it was due to the frame sides being too long, but it was in fact the spacing between them not being large enough. So when I told the optician about the misfit problem, he adjusted it according to what I told him, it's just that I didn't recognize what the problem was, which is why I had to come back 3 times. Now, I've been wearing them like that for a few days and it doesn't hurt my head anymore. The optician also replaced lenses from an old frame that I liked, from sunglass lenses to clear lenses, with my new prescription that he still kept (that was several days after receiving my new glasses from there). I hadn't even realized I could replace lenses, which is why I got a new pair of glasses completely with a new frame, but I now wear both my new pair and my old pair with new lenses, though I admit I like my new pair a bit more, even though it's not exactly what I wanted, but hey, they're still great and they weren't too expensive with my coupon! Sometimes you just can't find something that corresponds 100% to what you'd want, but 90% is still awesome! Also, the optician greeted me by my name every time I went back there, and I really appreciated that. If I'm still in Vancouver next time I need optical services, I will likely go back there. The eye test also went quickly and smoothly and the optician is very friendly, welcoming, helpful and comprehensive. He really does his best to help you find glasses that correspond to what you want, not what would give him more profit, and I felt valued as a client anytime I needed an adjustment or something else. read more

I purchased a voucher for "$100 off"contact lenses and found that in the end it was more expensive than going to a bigger business or online. The optician said it was more expensive because he did the fitting but I have not been able to see properly with the lenses and he actually charged me for the lenses for the fitting by using the lenses from out the boxes that I bought without telling me! A couple months ago I was instructed by Maui Jim Head Office in the U.S. to take my prescription Maui Jim Sunglasses to Rumi Optical, and they would assist me to return to them for warranty repairs or replacement. I was told it would cost me $28. for Rumi to provide this service; which I paid. A couple weeks later I got a call to come to the store and p/u my glasses; but when I was about to leave the Clerk (I believe it was the Owner's son) told me I had to pay an additional service charge of $25. Naturally I complained since this was the first I heard that there would be any additional charges. He called the Owner (his Father?), and after some discussion handed the phone over to me and the Owner went ballistic on me, and finally said to pay $10. which I agreed to; but the Clerk (son) gave me my glasses and wouldn't take the money from me. I just went back today to send the same glasses back to Maui Jim again (per instructions from Maui Jim's Head Office), and the Owner was VERY RUDE with me right in front of another Customer that he was serving, and he complained that he doesn't make any money on this service and he isn't doing it anymore. If he had assisted me today I was actually going to go back there next month and purchase a new pair of prescription glasses; which would cost at least 7 or 8 hundred dollars (my Group Insurance kicks in every two years); but I wouldn't step foot in that store again for any reason! read more

The owner is so rude if he thinks there is nothing in it for him! Both my husband and I wear prescription glasses and I also wear prescription sunglasses. We like to support local businesses and I have often walked passed and thought about going in as I like a pair of White Prada Baroque sunglasses in the window but I always have my dog with me who is blind so I haven't. Last year my husband bought a pair of Boss eyeglasses from the Bay but the arm broke recently. A month out of warranty they wouldn't do anything so we found a replacement frame online. I thought this would now be an opportunity to go to Rumi Optical but I was so wrong. Although the sign on the door says "come in" he was immediately unwelcoming. I told him I had 2 questions. I asked him the first, if he could take out the lenses from one frame and put them in the other and he immediately said NO. I said I would pay and he said it was too expensive and walked out into the back, leaving me just standing there. I was not given the choice as to whether I wished to pay. I therefore could not ask my 2nd question, which was to look at the white Prada baroque sunglasses. His unhelpfulness will certainly cost him a lot in the long run as I like to have several pairs and my prescription unfortunately gets worse every year. Being nice to people doesn't cost anything and I do it everyday. I was trying to help my husband who is extremely busy all the time, travelling a lot, helping companies to become ethical and sustainable as well as volunteering for a non-profit housing corporation. I purchased a couple of groupon vouchers. They did not say in Groupon that your suppose to pay for the eye sight exam result if you want a copy. They upsold us one year supply of contacts knowing that we intend to buy it somewhere else. He said $120 for a year supply. I said we wanted colored ones and he said add $98. My partner was given a clear(uncolored) sample to test and was great. A couple of days later went to pick up the colored ones and tried, They were mucky. So gave it a couple of days getting used to still the same. She called him and explained. Said nothing back, She asked if he is not even gonna call the manufacturer at least although we know that he is suppose to offer after sales care. He said I don't know. Since she doesnt like confrontations gave another pair another try. Still same results...inspected the lenses and there are some rippling on the edges. I decide to call this time. I asked for replacement same as the sample he gave us and refund of the extra $98 we had to pay for getting colored or full return and refund. He said no. He said they do not do returns and exchanges. He argued and talked over me while I try to reason out. No point telling a person anything if his mind is set in the beginning to say no. I just had an awesome experience at Rumi Optical on Denman Street in Vancouver's West End. Two years ago I purchased an expensive pair of frames and transition lenses from them. The glasses looked great and gave me perfect sight. About 2 months later the frames broke at the nosepiece. Mo, the owner, immediately contacted the manufacturer (Jones of New York) and within 3 days I had the new, free frames. Recently the frames broke at exactly the same place. It was a design flaw and not the fault of Rumi Optical. Mo tried his best to have the frames replaced for free again but the manufacturer said that their warranty had expired. I was expecting to have to purchase new frames. But Mo told me, "Not to worry, I will take care of you". Within 2 days he had found a new frame that fit my lenses. The glasses look great. The frames were more expensive (Claborn) than the first frames I bought but Mo said because of the defective design in original frames, he would give them to me at no cost. I was delighted and very surprised as this kind of service is almost unheard of. All the times I have had anything to do with Mo at Rumi Optical I found the experience a very good one. Mo is polite, patient and very respectful. He went out of his way to give me excellent service, rapidly and at no cost to me after my original purchase. I would highly recommend him and his store as an excellent place to have your eye sight test (at no cost if glasses are purchased) and to buy glasses. I can't understand why anyone would complain about poor service at this store. Perhaps it says more about the writer of the complaint than about the service and one wonders what these writers' motives are? This place is dodgy!!! According to the website, they advertised as "free" eyes exam but there is string attached. You have to buy their glasses and if you don't you it's 65 dollars for the test. Even after you buy their glasses they wouldn't give out the prescription measurement. You have to PAY for this information. THIS IS VERY DISHONEST!!!! I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND DOING BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE. read more
