Went to Tucson for the weekend and the one thing I told my husband I wanted while we were there was a Sonoran hot dog! We were in an uber when we passed by the little shack on the corner of the street and I knew it had to be good. I looked it up on Yelp immediately and saw it had such great reviews. We finally got the chance to go on our way to the airport to fly home. It did not disappoint! It's a small truck with a seating enclosure attached and they only serve hot dogs, chips, and drinks. We both ordered a Sonoran dog with everything and it was delicious! The bread is soft, yet toasty, and all of the toppings are great! I know there are a ton of hot dog places in Tucson, but I definitely recommend Ruiz Hot Dogs!
I finally stopped by to get a Sonoran Dog. It was good. It was gone in only a few bites. I think it's one of the better tasting Sonoran Dogs I've had. I didn't stay, but rather got it to go. The staff was prompt and I got my order fairly quickly. As far as ambiance goes, you sit in a trailer, exposed to the elements. This is on par for most of the food trucks that sell Sonoran dogs.
Honestly, not much need to be said about Ruiz.. Most of the Yelp reviews about this place are pretty spot on. We came because of how high they are rated and we were not disappointed! It's technically a food truck connected to a mobile shack.. This reminds me of TJ! You can pay via Venmo or zelle too I believe, but we paid cash. Their Sonoran dogs were so yummy and they gave plenty of condiments. Overall such a fun experience and I feel that if you're starving you can easily inhale 3 of them!
Not claiming to be a Sonoran Dog aficionado BUT this place delivers up delicious dogs. I've had this place on my short list way too long, so I'm glad we finally made time to take lunch here. Very friendly folks running this place and they are connected to the brick and mortar restaurant across the parking lot , Los Chiliplones... that matters because if you are with someone who is a non hotdog fan you have options! Delicious, fresh and tasty with the right blend of all the fixings ... I enjoyed that they ensure a nice amount of mustard .

My favorite part of the hot dog is not all the amazing flavors but the chile guero that taste like lemon! It hits the spot. Come check this out
They only have hotdogs, Sonoran hotdogs to be exact. I had a friend come with me one night late, she asked if they had a veggie dog, I laughed and watched the response from the cashier. He said to her we have hotdogs, she asked again and got the same response 2 more times, I was laughing so hard I could barely stand up. I knew the answer but I couldn't help myself. She ended up eating half of one of my hotdogs. They are so good, I drive down there to get them, late night and when I'm downtown. The best dogs in town, they only have hotdogs in case you didn't read the 1st part of my review.
I was on a mission to try all the top Sonoran hot dogs in Tucson. I only made it to Ruiz and El Guero, so here's the comparison: We thought Ruiz won overall. The hot dog was more flavorful, there were more toppings that all intermingled nicely together: enjoyed the optional cheddar cheese and guac in the dining trailer. The only thing El Guero had over Ruiz was the super soft, pillowy bun. Ruiz's crispy griddled bun was not bad though!
Arrived at 11am. Walked up the ramp and was greeted by a very friendly man. I ordered in Spanish and must've done ok because my order was correct. There is a cooler inside the covered dining area where you can grab your drink. There is another cooler to the right that has the shredded cheese, salsa and chile you can add as much as you like. Really good Sonoran dog. I would go back again!
Great location with plenty of parking, and view of a beautiful Landmark. Nice seating area with tables. Super friendly, cash only, and reasonable prices. My wife & I got (3) everything dogs and a Pepsi for $14. They have sauce & cheese in a cooler in waiting area for you to pick what you want. My wife is not a big fan of Sonoran Dogs, but she said these are the best she had, and I have to agree. These dogs were the best that I have had while touring Tucson.

I landed in Tuscon, and immediately made a beeline for Ruiz hot dogs. They're located on a dirt lot, and only sell one dish: the Sonoran hot dog. It's currently $4. Of course, if you want soda or another drink, they sell that too. It's cash only. To the side, there's a covered eating area with tables and most importantly, a cooler with shredded cheddar cheese, avocado sauce, and green salsa should you want to dress up your hot dog even more. Now to the actual dish itself. The bolillo hot dog bun is simply amazing. It's toasted on the outside so there's a crispy texture not unlike the outside of a grilled cheese sandwich bread. I would eat hot dogs more if they were treated in this manner. The bread on the inside is fluffy and holds up well to the rest of the ingredients and contains them so it's not messy. While the bread dwarfs the hot dog inside, the flavor is outsized. The bacon gives a nice smokey char taste and it is rendered well without any sad floppy unrendered areas. The toppings of pinto beans, onions (both diced grilled and raw), tomatoes, mayo, mustard and salsa were harmonious and worked well. I would come here again if I wanted something small and quick to eat.

I stopped by to buy some Sonoran hot dogs on my way back home to Phoenix and I've never made a better decision in my life. Even though I ate the hot dogs the day after, they were still great and my entire family can attest to that. We can't imagine how good it would be if we ate it fresh. Ruiz hot dog is a little shack trailer sitting on the corner, it's not the safest of areas but tbh, if you're not getting your Sonoran hot dogs from the side of the road, you're not getting good hot dogs haha. You can walk up and order at the window, let them know if there's anything you don't like, go sit down and they'll bring your food out to you. Everyone there was extremely nice, they speak English too! There's a hand sink to wash your hands if they get dirty. I love that they have this and it's super thoughtful. To the right of the hand sink are a bunch of coolers where you can take drinks and go up to the counter to pay and they'll help open the bottles for you. Each table has a napkin box. They also have an ice chest next to the utensils and to-go sauce containers that have green sauce, green salsa, and cheese for your liking. The hot dogs are $4 ea and they take card now but with a credit card fee. There's plenty of parking on the rock/dirt lot it sits on. Can't wait to come back to Tucson and eat! read more

Great dogs! Reasonable prices. $1 water $4 dogs. Really good dogs too. Crispy bacon on that guy and a perfectly toasted bun. Would do again. It's a food truck but has covered seating a big fan and tables. Yum!!! read more

We have been on the hunt for the best Sonoran dog in town. This place did not disappoint! The bun was nicely toasted and the hot dog had great flavor. Service was fast and helpful. The dining area was clean. Plenty of parking. We will definitely be back! read more

Tried a Sonoran hot dog for the first time, and I gotta say, I was not impressed. The toppings were loaded but the mix of flavors was underwhelming. The bun was hands-down the best part--soft, slightly sweet, and held everything together perfectly. If you're into trying something different but comforting, this is a solid choice. Probé un perro caliente Sonorense por primera vez y debo decir que no me impresionó. Los ingredientes estaban muy ricos, pero la mezcla de sabores era decepcionante. There's no need for any other items on their menu, this hot dog was incredible. This was my first Sonoran dog and I loved the toasted bun as well as all the toppings. We ate in the indoor dining room but ate our hotdogs so fast, we probably were only there for two minutes. I almost considered getting another hot dog, not gonna lie. This place is simple to the point. They serve one item and that's a Sonoran hotdog. A hotdog is a hotdog with a sweeter bread very soft and waste. It also has beans, mayonnaise, ketchup, and some other tomato toppings. There's some light seating. Other than that it's pretty straightforward and I would definitely come try it out. The only thing is that the hotdog could be a little bit bigger as it didn't fully fill out the bread. read more

We were told about Ruiz Hot Dogs from a friend who has been a Tucson resident for years. As Arizona newbies, our first introduction to Sonoran hot dogs was El Guero Canelo, but Ruiz has them beat! We arrived at a non-descript food truck with a small attached seating area. We ordered a couple dogs and a drink and took a set - make sure you bring cash! Our food was ready within a few minutes. I really enjoyed the toasted bun and felt like I could taste more of the actual hot dog instead of just a bunch of toppings. The bread was soft, the dog was hot, and the toppings were fresh. Overall a good place for a quick bite and a tasty hot dog. read more

I found this gem on someone's list of interesting places to eat in Tucson. We love loaded hot dogs, but I had never heard of a Sonoran hot dog before. Once I did, I had to try it. It was the consensus that this is the best in Tucson. It's cash only. Hot dogs are $3.50. The menu has one thing: the hot dog with the toppings listed. Get it fully loaded as recommended. It's a cart with some tables to eat at. It was a damn good hot dog. The bun seemed like Texas toast and was really good. Beans on a hot dog sounded weird, but it worked. I couldn't recommend this hole in the wall more. read more

***3.5 stars*** This is only my second Sonoran dog ever and the first one was from D.C. All I know is that my DC experience was memorable and made me a fan. Fast forward many years and I am now a lucky, Arizona resident who's ready to try all the authentic Sonoran dogs. Ruiz's version was good. My most favorite part was the bun, it was a little buttery, had a very slight crunch and was super soft. The hot dog was good but lacked the snap I was looking for when I bit into it. The different toppings overpowered much of the hot dog/bacon flavors. I enjoyed the hot dog and would recommend anyone try the dogs here. read more

Look, I know I have been lacking on reviewing Tucson's amazing culinary scene, But his Sonoran hot dog just keeps catching my eye! The ones at the Ruiz stand in the shadow of a historic church on 22nd street, and I will dames if these hot dogs are not imbued with the love of the saints themselves. Magical cheese baked big soft pillowy buns, dog wrapped In bacon and deep fried,... oh but we ain't done yet, pintobeans , tomatoes, and the coup de grace of sauces loaded on top. If the amount of salsa is not enough, I suggest popping over to the cool for some extra green sauces and What's This!!!!! Shredded fresh cheddar to scatter over your dog! All said in done, two loaded hot sofas and an authentic Boyle of Mexican Coke ( with the real cane sugar in a bottle and you are only out $11even!!!
