Great dinner spot in Sligo! When we arrived, it was busy but we were seated right away to a table. We ordered penne al salmone, fettuccine abruzzo and garlic and cheese chips as a side. The penne al salmone was a creamy tomato pasta with smoked salmon. This was saucy and so delicious! The fettuccine abruzzo was a creamy cheese sauce with pancetta, peas and mushrooms. Both pasta dishes were great. The garlic and cheese chips were also yummy. Service was efficient and friendly as well. Overall, awesome Italian food which exceeded our expectations. read more

My husband and I came to Rugantino in Sligo for dinner and had a very disappointing experience. The staff were rude, and the service was terrible from the start. I ordered the carbonara, but it was extremely salty and eggy -- I only managed three bites before I let the staff know it wasn't edible. Instead of offering to replace the meal or help in any way, they just took the plate without saying a word. No one checked in, and no effort was made to resolve the issue. Then, to top it off, I was still charged €10.50 for the dish I couldn't eat. When I asked for the manager, a staff member said she was the manager, but never introduced herself or showed any care about the situation. She said I was charged because I "gave back the food." It's not about the money -- it's about the complete lack of customer care or professionalism. We left extremely disappointed and won't be returning. I wouldn't recommend Rugantino to anyone. read more

We came in for dinner without a rezzo, and they were great at fitting us right in! For a starter, we ordered the Caprese salad, and the cheese was so fresh and delicate that we loved it. My hubs had the penne arrabitta and said it was spot on. I had the mushroom linguine, which came with a light cream sauce, homemade noodles, and lovely fresh mushrooms - not overcooked, great texture. This is such a great spot for casual Italian in Sligo; we'll be back when we're in town again. read more

Must make a reservation here! It gets quite busy. Food is fantastic! Loved the cheese "focaccia" although it was more like a pizza with cheese. Quite tasty. I had a side salad that had fresh lettuce, cucumber, and tomato. I then had the pasta with penne, guanciale, peas, meat sauce and Parmesan cream. It was quite good. We love the food here and we stop in every time we are in Sligo (sometimes more than once.) The tagliatelle bolognese is incredible if you like classic flavors. We also always order the garlic foccacina and one of their specialty salads. **On the most recent visit --December 29, 2021-- we stopped in to get some takeaway. However we were very disappointed to see that they were serving two guests who refused to be masked (and additionally, one of the employees behind the counter was also unmasked.) We decided to leave and go elsewhere for food. That experience was different from a couple nights earlier when we got dinner there. So it seems as if the COVID policies are being applied inconsistently, or perhaps (I hope) last night was a fluke. Great service, brilliant food. These are the best pizzas you can find in Sligo. I would classify the price as €€ (on a rate from € to €€€€). It is a nice place to eat without too many frills. The location is excellent right in front of the Garavogue River which crosses Sligo Town. read more

Going 4 stars for the overall quality and atmosphere Rugantino is a smallish 25 seater in downtown Sligo. The open kitchen features a pizza oven and chefs preparing meals. The menu is Italian with additional nightly specials. We were a parry of 4 on an April Tuesday and very much needed reservations at 7pm. The gnocchi with octopus special is great. The side garden salad was exceedingly fresh. Kid 1 ordered a margarita pizza, which is essentially a traditional American cheese pizza. Kid 2 ordered a pepperoni pizza....keep in mind the pepperoni here is more akin to hot dogs than spicy meat. The pizza is more miss than hit. Quick turnaround here too. Great little Italian restaurant in Sligo's Italian quarter, it's small and cosy and run by Italians which is always a good sign! Italian wares; pasta, sauces, and vino line the walls and the interior is modern and well-lit. Stone baked pizza is the speciality of the house and that's exactly what we fancied, so being hungry geese we ordered two large ones and a half bottle of Italain Pinot Grigio...so basically a feast of cheesy carbs and wine...it was always going to end well and it certainly did! I had the buffalo mozzarella and cherry tomato pizza, basically an upmarket Margherita adorned with fresh basil. The pizza base was thin and the crust chewy, the toppings were fresh and delicious, the wine was light and fruity, the service was spot on... really great little find, would definitely return! read more

This cosy little restaurant is run by a group of friendly Italians. The pizzas are excellent value and there is a wide range, including tasty vegetarian options. They also do daily specials, which your server informs you of as you take your seat and menus. The interior is a little bijou which I can envision being a problem in the future as it is constantly buzzing with people dining and looking for tables. However they also have an extensive takeaway menu! The wine list is a little pricey and they currently only do one white or red by the glass, while wines by the glass are reasonably priced, I hope they will expand wines by the glass soon. All in all, a great dining experience, very authentic atmosphere, I've lived in and dined in many restaurants in Italy and this experience was comparable. The staff are warm and accommodating. I wish them every success with their venture, and would definitely recommend it to friends. read more

Found this little gem through the help of fellow yelpers! Location is spot on; the bistro is across the street from a beautiful view of the river that is lined with blooming flowers with a quiant little walkover bridge and a view of the Sligo Abbey. The margherita pizza was cheesy goodness with a perfect pizza crust. Our main dish was from their dinner special menu; a whole fresh lobster with cherry tomatoes cooked in a Brandy tomatoe sauce & tonnarelli pasta for 24€, what a deal & delicious! read more

"Italian by Italians" is what they say. I understand it's fairly new to Sligo. We went for lunch one day. The guy who came to the table was very friendly and explained that we could choose from any special, pizza or salad or from the permanent lunch options with a soft drink our mineral water for 9,50€ . I chose the norcina (penne with a white sauce and sausage, pancetta and mince) was excellent. I had had it before but didn't know the name. It was excellent and really Italian. read more

Rugantino is the new kid on the block in Sligo town, and it it fast becoming my favourite place to eat in town. It has quite a small seating area with an open kitchen where you can see the all Italian staff hard at work. The menu is a good size, and offers something for everyone. After visiting several times, I have not been disappointed. I recommend the Swordfish (which , under 14 euro is steal!) as well as the Calamari and the Pasta with Clams. The Pizzas are also superb, not overloaded with toppings, just the right amount. Wine is a little expensive, but they do a daily/weekly deal on the blackboard (as well as specials!) Very friendly staff, accommodating and descriptive of the dishes. I strongly recommend to everyone. (My last meal included One substantial Calamari Starter, two mains (one seafood & one Italian sausage pasta special, One Tiramisu and three glasses of wine came in at roughly just over 50 euro, very affordable) read more

Excellent restaurant in the Italian quarter of Sligo. Went here for dinner with friends and wasn't disappointed. Run by knowledgable and friendly Italians, the range and price of dishes are superb. I had pasta in a creamy tomato sauce with chicken and bacon which was rich and satisfying. The owner recommended a fab refreshing wine and the waitress was friendly and helpful on translating the dishes! I had gorgeous strawberry gelato with fruit for desert. We were NOT disappointed here!! We had the caprese and it was so good. They asked us to try one of their specials which was some spaghetti type pasta that started with a t (tratiatelli-or something I. The same galaxy as that word) with pancetta and a garlic flower herb. Most ignorant people I have ever dealt with in my life, rude from the minute we entered the door. We waited ten minutes to be seated in a little cramped two seater table and waited nearly twenty minutes to be served because the waitress was to busy talking to rich men and trying to get good tips. Eventually I had to get up and go to the counter myself and ask could we order. We were treated like trash by the waiter, who then told us it was 8.95 each just to sit in the restaurant. He became even worse when he realized we were only ordering a pizza each. Which promoted our departure. I will never ever return to this place again. There is no need to treat customers like that. As a couple of vegetarians, we were concerned that we might not find quality restaurants with sufficient veggie options. So we were hopeful when we read positive reviews of Rugantino, and our experience with it has been great. Friendly, efficient service, well-prepared food and a laidback, comfortable environment make this small, Italian-run place a treat. Our pleasant waiter did everything to make us feel well looked after. If we return to Sligo, we will definitely visit Rugantino again. read more

i was very unhappy at my stay here. the minute i walked in the door, into this empty restaurant at 4:30pm, i was not greeted, but i was told "we can seat you here, but we need you to finish by 6:30." i politely told the waiter that i did not appreciate the comment and he shouldn't treat his customers like that ever. i will not be coming back here again. read more
