Looking for a table in a restaurant in Westport in peak tourist season, on the weekend? And you didn't book in advance? HA!!! Ha ha ha a ha etc..... It is a struggle to put it mildly. It starts out ok.. "Do you have something for 3?" "No, we are booked out for the eve" "OK thanks" Your mood changes from amiable to hangry (hungry and cranky) pretty quickly as restaurant after restaurant turns you away. "I'll give you my first born if you give me a table for 3... well, 2 if you want him straight away" "sorry sir, we don't have anywhere to keep him" Desperation drives us up a hill and into the last chance saloon; il Vulcano. It is quiet and a bit dated looking, the menu is Italian, the staff at the door friendly. They have space, lots in fact, which was a bit worrying given how busy everywhere else was, but we were hungry so we gratefully took the proffered table. We plumbed for the early bird, 20 euro a head. We had steak, lasagne and chicken. It was all excellent and voluminous, huge portions in fact. All in all, a really pleasant experience, not fine dining by any stretch, but good and value for money was incredible.

Great find on a quiet street with authentic Italian food. Creamy Italian dressing on the insalada mista, very nice. The arribiata is a little spicy but tasty. Pizza was chewy and flavorful, won't make you forget Chicago or New York style pizzas, but very well done. House red wine was very good, a great value. Save room for the homemade ice cream. They also have a n early bird special.

One of the best Italian meals I have ever had! Was visiting from Texas and stopped in for dinner, was not disappointed.

Great dinner spot in Sligo!…read more When we arrived, it was busy but we were seated right away to a table. We ordered penne al salmone, fettuccine abruzzo and garlic and cheese chips as a side. The penne al salmone was a creamy tomato pasta with smoked salmon. This was saucy and so delicious! The fettuccine abruzzo was a creamy cheese sauce with pancetta, peas and mushrooms. Both pasta dishes were great. The garlic and cheese chips were also yummy. Service was efficient and friendly as well. Overall, awesome Italian food which exceeded our expectations.

I ordered the carbonara, but it was extremely salty and eggy -- I only managed three bites before I let the staff know it wasn't edible. Instead of offering to replace the meal or help in any way, they just took the plate without saying a word. No one checked in, and no effort was made to resolve the issue. Then, to top it off, I was still charged €10.50 for the dish I couldn't eat. When I asked for the manager, a staff member said she was the manager, but never introduced herself or showed any care about the situation. She said I was charged because I "gave back the food." It's not about the money -- it's about the complete lack of customer care or professionalism. We left extremely disappointed and won't be returning. I wouldn't recommend Rugantino to anyone.

Sometimes you just get lucky when you choose a restaurant in a foreign country. We hit the jackpot…read morewhen we chose the Italian restaurant, Passione da Simone (also known as Passione by the Slice). It was opened 8 months previously by Simone Volante, who had immigrated to Sligo from Monte Cassino (a town north of Naples). If you live in Sligo, we highly recommend that you come to this restaurant as soon as you can. This restaurant was like being in Italy - the food was freshly prepared with the best Italian ingredients. Simone was so animated and fun to talk to and with. The menu is all Italian and quite extensive, plus Simone will customize any dish just for you. We started our meal with a bottle of Rosso Piceno Red Wine - a full bodied and really good wine. For our appetizer, we had the Caprese - fresh Burrata cheese with freshly sliced tomatoes, Italian extra virgin olive oil, salt and basil; on homemade, focaccia bread. I was so excited to see Arancini on the menu and had to have one. This is a Carnaroli rice ball coated with bread crumbs and stuffed with porcini mushroom and mozzarella. Wow - what a start - both were beyond delicious. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his Tagliatelle alla Bolognese. Simone suggested that he make me a special dish of Tagliatelle with Pancetta, Funghi Porcini, Truffle and Stracciatella cheese sauce. This pasta dish was over the top in flavour. Thank you, Simone, I loved it! We finished the bottle of wine; so, my husband had a glass of Primitivo. To end our fabulous meal, we split a Tiramisu - Italian cookies soaked in coffee and amaretto liqueur; with sweet mascarpone cream. We liked this restaurant so much; we went back two days later. Simone was as welcoming as the first time - now we were family! We liked the wine we had the first time, so we ordered another bottle of the Rosso Piceno. Our starter this time was the Bruschetta di Terra - toasted bread topped with speck and gorgonzola cheese. We enjoyed Tagliatelle alla Cacciatora and Lasagne. My husband likes his sweets; so, he finished with a Cuore di Ciccolato -a chocolate lava cake topped with whipped cream. I wished we lived in Sligo; this would be our go-to place for Italian food. Thank you Simone for another delicious and entertaining evening with you!
