Sage was by far the best meal we had in Ireland over our two week trip. We Had a 5:30 reservation so we used the Early Bird 3 Course Meal offering. I started with Killary mussels (which were the best I've ever eaten) and my wife had the micro green salad (which was excellent). For entrees, I had the Beef Cheeks which were incredible (think short ribs) and my wife had the Sea Trout. Both were perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Both were served with side vegetables that were the perfect accompaniments. We finished with the chocolate mousse and baklava desserts. I thought the chocolate mousse was the best I've ever had. We also enjoyed a bottle of The Chocolate Block red blend wine from South Africa that a pub owner down the street had told us to try. All in all it was a magical meal. Service was outstanding. My husband and I made reservations here on a whim one night and I'm glad we did! I'm gluten free as I have celiac, and I had got glutened the previous night at another restaurant, so I cautiously went into this restaurant. Thankfully the waiter was extremely kind and asked the cooking staff any questions I had. I ended up having an excellent meal, as did my non-gf husband. I had a chicken dish and finished off the night with a gluten free dessert. The service was excellent and all the tables were full when we got here, always a sign to me that it's a yummy place! Wow!! How lucky were we to find this place and it was right across from our Air BnB. Along with great food, we had the best service from Patricia. She was lovely and really enhanced our dining experience. In our party we had the Lamb, Ribeye, Cod and Surf and Turf along with the Oysters and the Aran Island Goat cheese. Amazing all the way around. We had dessert but I would probably skip as not a big fan of the pannacotta and the chocolate mousse. I also have a problem with a restaurant saying that the wine they are charging 39 euro for is a 2014 when in fact it was a 2017 - there should be a reduction in price. May be the best food I've had in years. Elegant presentation of a delicious lamb with succulent vegetables. Wine list is well chosen and varies and well priced. The cod was artfully and beautifully arranged in the center of a large white plate. Local oysters were sparking fresh, flavorful with a small scattering of caviar. The seasoning through t bee meal was subtle and hard to place, the chef does not rely on salt to enhance, he uses fine balanced herbs and spices. He's an artist. The staff provide Michelin level service. This place is fabulous. Decors very un-fancy and the prices range in the 30 euro range for mains. Sage you took our breath away! Such a surprise to find this 100% neighborhood Gem in the tiny town of Westport in north western Ireland. It was so fantastic, that we dined here both nights of our two night stay! It's such a cozy ambience and you must have a reservation as they only serve dinner and the dining room is small. The menu features local specialty foraged produce and sustainable seafood and meats. It is seasonal and changes as to what is in season and available. Everything is fresh beyond belief and so very creative. Such a talented chef! They have A varied menu with offerings for gluten-free and vegetarian diets. Both nights we started with appetizers, followed by a delicious soup. We had one of the best salads and beautifully constructed I might add that I have ever eaten, it was a delicate layering of baby lettuces, goat cheese, nuts, berries, Parmesan crisps, herbs, edible fresh flowers and a hard boiled quails egg...amazing! We also had a wonderful seafood linguine, their fish special (Turbot) and a lamb entree. The featured pink Gin elderberry Gin & Tonic cocktail with fresh berries was outstanding! They also have a great wine list with some stars from Croatia I think, that our knowledgeable waiter suggested by the glass and they were so good and paired beautifully with our meals. We had the mussels and calamari rings for starters and the lamb and haddock special for mains. The taster breads and dips that are brought out before the starters are divine. I love when restaurants bring out an amazing taster. Really gets me excited for the starter and main course and sets the high bar for the night. If a restaurant can produce an impressive taster, it shows that they're really serious about making sure the customer has the best of experiences. read more

Amazing! We were not totally sure of ourselves when we selected this restaurant for our "early bird" dinner, but it did not disappoint! I highly recommend Sage for dinner in Westport!! I ordered the Aubergine Parmegianna (eggplant Parmesan) and my SO had the pork belly plate. Everything was super delicious! I will post pictures, but please note, the servings are bigger than they look. We left the place stuffed to the gills! We had a glass of Sauvignon Blanc each and started our meal with the complementary bread plate, calamari, and mussels... It was all so perfect! We visited Sage for dinner last summer while on holiday travelling around the West of Ireland. Sage is situated on the upper part of Westport town, a couple of minutes walk from the clock tower at the top of the main street. We passed the restaurant when exploring the town in the day and were looking for a cosy place to celebrate my birthday that evening! Sage looked so inviting and appealed straightaway to our taste to eat in an independent Italian restaurant, so we decided to give it a try! The exterior of the restaurant was painted sage green and once through the small entrance, you're welcomed into a small, informal setting where the cream and light green décor, with modern finishings makes it feel more homely Irish, than traditional Italian! Forget your red checked tablecloths and mama's ornaments gracing shelves and tables here! The interior is complimented by contrasting darkwood tables which have modern settings and salt and pepper pots which Sarah (the owner and co-founder) has collected on her travels around the world! We found this out because Sarah approached us as soon as we arrived. We struck up conversation and she asked us where we were from and carried on to be really friendly and chatty for the rest of the evening (although the attention wasn't too full on). Sarah took the time to talk us through the various choices on the menu and answered many of our somewhat probing questions about some of the more interesting main courses! From memory there's a a small wine bar and hatch to the kitchen where you can watch Sarah's partner (Chef Davide Donnalia, the Italian inspiration to the restaurant!) and team construct your dishes! It's a little while ago since we visited, but from memory my partner and I ordered the Clew Bay mussels in white wine and garlic and the mushroom risotti with truffle oil. I remember the risotti being a little oily and it did detract a little from my overall enjoyment of the meal (and hence why I've given this review 4 instead of the full 5 stars), however the service and character of the place certainly made-up for any slight criticism of the meal. Sage has a well priced wine list offering a good selection and range of wines and served great coffee (which you would expect from a good "Italian" restaurant. Even if it is on the West coast of Ireland! Definitely worth visiting if you're exploring the west side of Ireland. We left with a positive impression and am sure Sage will go from strength-to-strength (apparently it only recently opened in 2009). read more

Smart to get a reservation as it is quite booked. The fish special was simply grilled and tasty. Portions are on the small size, but they do provide a small bread and olive plate at the start of the meal and a couple of cookies and a schnapps at the end of the meal. Sage was recommended by a friend of a friend and it was one of the best recommendations that I have ever followed. We were first to arrive in this . perhaps 30 seat modern designed restaurant. I had been given the impression that the restaurant would not be child friendly - in fact, it really could not have been more child friendly. My daughter received a kids menu as soon as we sat down, followed by coloured pencils and a colouring book. Oddly, the kids menu did not come with kids size portions, but did have kids prices - nice. We started with fried calamari with a spiced aoli - perfectly fried and tasty. I moved on to a parpadelle special with scallops.The pasta was cooked to perfection and outstanding. My daughter had a basic though excellent spaghetti with tomato sauce and my wife had an outstanding fish stew. We moved on to desert - chocolate fondue with fruit, marshmallows and it biscotti - our two other dinner partners helped us devour everything edible on the plate - my daughter traded her ice cream sundae for an extra fondue fork.
