I don't live in Carpinteria, but I frequent the area often. This review is not for the food...I actually like it, plus they have a pretty good salsa bar. They CONSTANTLY get the order wrong!! This last time was the last time. I ordered a combo burrito with pollo asado (chicken, beans, cheese, guac, and sour cream), when I got home and took a bite, there was just beans, rice, and sour cream. I go back, and they acknowledge that they gave me the wrong order, so they make me a new one. I get home, take a few bites, and it turns out they didn't add guac or sour cream - pretty much ripping me off a couple extra bucks - and this isn't the first time. I was not about to go back a 3rd time, as I shouldn't have to! I sent them a message stating what had happened, and it's been a few weeks now...no response. Reading other reviews, I guess this is the norm for them. I don't understand how hard it is to include the ingredients that are listed on the menu, unless, they are knowingly doing it to scam us customers out of a few bucks here and there - which adds up in the long run. Came in for taco Tuesday ...Not Hot garbage but definitely MID as it gets !! Not to mention the staff here is rude as all get out. I asked for chips and they didn't give them to me at first because They mumble Spanish to one another clueless that a lot of Americans understand Spanish! Never eating this slop again. Gave me bubble guys immediately. I'm used to bad vibes in this area especially if you're not local. But these people need to work on their social skills and behavior. I always find that Rudy's makes the burrito without mixing the ingredients. So here one end was all bean and the other was all meat. So weird. But it was tasty. The meat wasn't really seared but just chunks. I would have preferred real carne asada off of a flat top or grill. This burrito was $20. Insane. There is a reason why this restaurant only had 3 stars, poor customer service. If you order a meal you will get a bag of chips. But if you order 5 meals you'll still get that ONE SMALL bag of chips. I asked for a bag of chips per meal because we had more than one and they refused to give us some. Yet I asked if I paid per each meal individually if each meal would get one and they said yes. Which is ridiculous. They admitted that they would rather refund me the whole order and charge me each meal individually and added that it was time consuming but would rather do it the long way than to give us two more small bags of chips. Rudy's food and service was absolutely fantastic! These are the very first tacos my kids have ever liked from a restaurant. And the very kind and sweet girl working the register was very helpful and even brought a special "kid" salsa (normally used with taquitos) for my girls. I'm visiting from the Bay and thought I'd check this place out as it was recommended to me by the front desk staff of the hotel where I stayed. It was later in the evening so I decided to order a tostada via doordash. When the food arrived, the top of the tostada had a piece of foil thrown on it not covering the edges at all leaving food exposed. It also looked like it fell over during the delivery as half of the insides were on the bottom of the bag. Thinking that the Dasher had tampered with it (as not covering food/leaving takeout food exposed is against CA health department guidelines/food safety standards) I called the restaurant and asked if it was normal for them not to package their takeout food. The woman who answered said "yeah, we don't have bowls that fit the tostada so we just throw foil on it". I just threw out the food. If they care that little about proper food handling/presentation then who knows how the food was handled when it was being made. Don't go here. Bad service, and poor food handling. read more

This place is definitely a two star. However, the cashier was so sweet even if she was a bit overwhelmed by all four patrons AND had to get her coworker to get change next door. She was charming and kind so one extra star for her. Zero ambiance- absolutely zero. The food wasn't good. Mounds of sour cream and refried beans. The only seafood they have is tilapia which crumbles softly, or shrimp. There were 7 of us. The meat looked dry. The portions were enormous but the food was not good. I've driven past this restaurant for years so I decided to try it last night... Man, was I disappointed in the service and experience. Prices are not listed on the menu, it was a guessing game....the total for 2 burritos an 2 soft drinks was $45!! Came here for the first time on Monday. I had a carnitas burrito wet with red sauce. The burrito was good with a lot of flavor. Carnitas were delicious. My girlfriend had a RBC burrito and a crispy chicken taco she loved everything. The salsa was delicious one of the best. It's not to watery and the seasoning was on point. We used to order from this Rudy's all the time. Their food was great before Covid hit. You would think that would encourage them to work harder to ensure the quality of their food was good, so they could get customers and perhaps stay in business! Not at all! Our meal was just atrocious and keep in mind this cost us $45 with tip. My husband ordered the chicken salad and the lettuce was brown and there was no dressing. My daughter ordered her chicken nachos and the chicken was hard and over-cooked. Then they just threw that and a scoop of beans on some cold chips - to add insult to injury the little bit of cheese they added wasn't even melted and they forgot the guacamole and Pico De Gallo! We asked for an order of chips and salsa. We got two tiny salsas and the chip bag is now about a quarter of the size it used to be. The very worst was my meal. I ordered a crunchy beef taco which is my favorite. Tuesdays used to be taco Tuesdays and tacos were $2. Not anymore! This taco was inedible. The shell was burnt and completely shattered. Inside was 90% lettuce and hard as a rock burnt chicken that has clearly been sitting around all day! Let's forget the fact that I ordered beef, this chicken was clearly scraped off the bottom of some pan somewhere. The Pastor soft taco was pathetic. Cold as ice and the meat was tasteless and hard as a rock. It was served with some limp lettuce that was somehow greasier than the actual taco! Last but not least was our order of homemade corn tortillas. I love homemade tortillas so I was so excited to get these. They were burnt On both sides, falling apart and the edges were completely hard yet the center was wet. I am guessing they served us the food that other people left over because there is no other possible explanation for this! It seems Restaurants in general care less and less these days when they should care more. They depend on locals to keep their businesses open and somehow it gets worse and worse. We rarely eat out anymore and this is the reason. The prices went up, the quality went way down, and they depend on the fact that you will not realize this until you get home and it's too late to do anything about it! One last comment... The entire restaurant was overrun by GrubHub and door dash runners and it was Almost impossible to actually get the cashier's attention to order our food and took forever to get this slop. We will clearly not be going back here until something changes. I really hope that people will read mine and other peoples reviews and choose to eat somewhere else. Perhaps then they might pay a little more attention to the quality of the food they are serving you. If I had it in me right now I would drive back there, take this food and dump it on their counter and ask if they would like to eat this for $45. If you order take out, your order has a very strong chance of being completely wrong, or nothing like the menu description, 90% of the time. If you're dumb enough to gamble on the burger, it is nearly inedible, and won't be prepared how you ask. If you order extra sauce or salsa on the side, and pay for it, don't be surprised if there's none whatsoever when you open the bag. Our family rolls our eyes whenever someone wants this local chain restaurant, you NEVER get what you ordered. If you order crispy tacos, don't be surprised if they are nearly burnt on the outside and partially frozen inside. Yada yada, industrial corporate Mexican food is gross. And they are super weird about chips, pay $100 for several meals and they still give you the same amount of chips as if you ordered one meal. read more

Came here on a Monday afternoon with my fiance and dog on the way to the beach. They have seating outside which is nice. Food is prices a tad above average, a burrito was $11 and my chicken nachos were $12. They do have a great salsa bar. The food came in a short period of time, maybe 7 minutes. They brought our food to us outside and it was all delicious, definitely worth the slightly above average cost! A few bites into our meal, another couple came up with their dog who growled at my dog causing a tiff spilling my nachos all over my lap and on the ground. (FYI, the couple said nothing and continued to sit right next to us.. annoying) Obviously embarrassed and a bit upset I started to clean up my messy pants and spilled food. Other patrons got me napkins and the employee came out telling me not to worry about the mess and said that they were making me another nachos. I greatly appreciated this gesture since I was ready to leave feeling awkward about the scene, it was a nice surprise. Over all, I would absolutely come back here! For what it is - food - this place is terrific. Ample portions, reliable quality from order to order, reasonable prices. Taco Tues can be too busy and rushing food can cause lower quality -- I avoid them now. There have been a couple of mess ups with our order, but they always make it right if you bother to go back. Needed a sit down lunch after going to the beach, and Rudy's was right there! Had four combos, all the food came out quickly and was hot and fresh. Server wiped the table extra as we went to sit down, nice touch. Above average salsa bar like six kinds and a good variety of flavors not just hot or mild. I don't know what's going on with Rudy's on State Street but the last few weeks the phone service wasn't great. I call and no one answers the phone. Or they put me on hold for 20 minutes allowing you to hear the background. Find out that they were not even helping other customers. So here I was waiting to place my order ahead. Only for no one to take it? I don't know if their hours are incorrect on here. But if so, they need to be updated. Other then that their burritos are my favorite. Was told they don't make the avocado salsa right now. So that's a bummer because it's my favorite. read more

Update #3 While Rudy's food has always been more than satisfactory, it appears that they have made some beautiful renovations. The newer staff are kind, attentive, and friendly (a big change from the former waitresses). They have also replaced their older furniture with comfortable booths and tables. This smaller restaurant is appealing for its great food, as well as appearance. They were also kind enough to exchange a plate for me with no hassle. Always a top choice! read more
