My wife and I were staying in the town of Carpinteria and it was the ending of our stay and we ran out of lunch stuff during the week. I decided to try one of the 6 or 7 taco stands within walking distance of our place. On one of the main drags, this bakery also makes a lot of Mexican dishes as well, like enchiladas, burritos and of course TACOS. They didn't have a menu, which I thought was a little odd, but they were very happy to make 2 asada tacos for me. The order was called to the back and the to-go order was ready in about 5 minutes. I brought them home and there was a tasty green salsa and a spicier red ne. Both very good! Lots of pork was added to the two steamed tortillas each and some chopped onion and cilantro. The way a taco should be. I preferred the taco with the red salsa. At about $2.25 a piece, they were reasonably priced. Pretty hard to make a bad taco and these guys did not disappoint! read more

Pros: + Good location, lots of seating inside and outside. + Decent menu selection. + The pina salsa is interesting, sweet and a little roasted, and I haven't had anything quite like this before. + Sodas are somehow a good deal, a 500ml Mexican soda is only like $2.20. Cons: - A small dish of chips is $3.90 after tax, and you have to bug the staff for the tiny salsa cups. The chips were also not extremely fresh. - The cook forgot to add the "super" parts to the super burrito (sour cream and pico de gallo). This burrito was definitely not worth $14 or so after tax. - Not as much flavor as I expected - the shredded beef was fairly bland especially. read more

When I am craving Mexican food, I want the real thing but had not really found what I was looking for in Carp until today. I checked the Yelp reviews and everyone seemed to like this place. The enchiladas, burritos, and taco choices look like winners based on the posted photos but I had to order the nachos so that I could report on each of the hot sauces in their salsa bar, right? I got a to- go order because the TV was blaring over the clean tables, and I could go enjoy the view at the State Beach. Nachos: Real shredded cheese and lots of it, whole beans, fresh tortilla chips served with avocado and Pico de gallo equals Winner on all counts. Your choice of meat if you want it. Hot sauce: The light green sauce had the haberno burn that I crave. The other green is a smooth avocado sauce. One of the reds had a slow burn, the other was a Chipotle blend which was mild. The Pico provided with my nachos was fresh while the salsa bar's was a little watery but had fresh cilantro and a nice flavor. I will definitely be back to try their enchiladas and tacos. This place is legit. I had the super burrito which was massive and delicious. Staff was also super friendly.

For the price, definitely five stars. My favorite is their chicken mole. Be sure to ask for beans and corn tortillas--sometimes they just serve it with the rice. The tortillas are made fresh. The chicken mole takes a little longer--about 10 or 15 minutes but it is worth it. Bring your appetite, share, or bring a to go container. Also, it's a little spicy. They didn't have the mole today so I shared a res milanese sandwich with my daughter. It was delicious. The other night I went in with five friends and they made us Mexican hot chocolate--it's not on the menu, but it should be. It was great. Also bring cash for tips--otherwise the servers don't get it. My only complaint is the plastic forks. I'm trying to be more conscientious about not using single use plastic. But they do use real plates! The ambience is very casual, but there is usually plenty of seating. The salsas are authentic and delicious. My kids like the tacos, but be sure to ask for them without onions and cilantro if your kids don't like them. Also the location is very good--right next to the theater and near downtown. This is the sister/brother restaurant to Tacos Don Roge. I love their pastries...delicious and only $.75 each. Such a great deal! Their breakfast items are excellent too. I love the chiliquiles with the verde sauce. Definitely big enough for a second meal. The pastry chef and main cook is always changing what he makes. He has the standard conchas, other Mexican pastries, but also makes specialty cookies, bread and flan. He is really nice and loves hearing compliments about the things he bakes. It looks very authentic and the cashier did not even speak English so I was hoping for a great meal. Nope. I had the shrimp diablo and an order of chips and salsa. The chips were stale but they had a salsa bar with lots of very tasty salsa options. The shrimp diablo was bland with no flavor or spice to it at all. The sauce was watery. They used to have a lady, I think her name was Cece that was working from morning, noon and night. I thought she was the owner, due to the times I would see her in the restaurant. Turns -out she was an employee, whom preformed excellent guest service and took ownership in our meals. We have returned and we no longer see Cece working and our experience has never ever been the same. The taste of the food to the warm hospitality all have gone away with this jewel of an employee.
