Great hole in the wall taco shop to fill you up after a long Beach day! We did tacos, burritos, and chips and guac. Every bite was delicious but my favorite thing was their salsa bar with so many delicious salsa flavors and options! I would recommend getting chips to try all the flavors. This is a nice little hole-in-the-wall taqueria, with all the essentials: lots of menu options and lots of salsa. Actually, they really take salsa seriously, with an abundance of options you can select from, all labeled so no surprises. I ordered three tacos: two chicken and one pork. The thing about Don Roge: when you order chicken tacos, you get loads of chicken (and little else). When you order pork, you get loads of pork. You can then supplement your tacos with whatever salsas you want, and in any combination. I liked a combo of pico de gallo supplemented with salsa diabla. Wonderful (and super zippy)! Service consists of going to the counter to place your order. They're nice, friendly and super prompt. If you grab a seat, indoors (small, not many options) or outside (many more options, bigger tables), they'll bring your food out to you. You'll need to ask for napkins, which they'll gladly bring. (The overloaded tacos, which I loaded up even more, are a bit messy.) Anyway, Don Roge is now my go-to taqueria joint in Carpinteria, especially since Tacos-to-go across the street went the way of the dodo. read more

Very nice costumer service and they work hard to make your meal fresh but quick. My husband and I ordered two very different things and both were unfortunately just not our style. The asada torta was soggy, salty and the meat itself was chewy. Hubby ordered the supper burrito, yet they forgot to add sour cream and pico de gallo. On a trip to Carpinteria we found this little spot. It's Mexican food and right next door is an ice cream shop. They have a nice selection of food. We tried the nachos and a torta. The young man at the counter was friendly and patient. It's really small but the ambiance is quaint. Over the the experience was good. If you are in Carpinteria it's a must try. read more

Really middle of the road taco shop. It wouldn't be my first choice but we were feeling tacos and these guys were the few shops in town. I got some enchiladas and street tacos. The enchiladas were pretty good. The street tacos were a bit bare. They came with the tortillas and the meat. The salsa bar had all the toppings you needed. It really puts emphasis on the meat. Unfortunately the meat didn't quite deliver. If I were here again, I'd probably skip both enchiladas and street tacos and try the birria tacos. This shop shares an entrance with an ice cream shop. If you're in the mood for ice cream it wouldn't be a far walk to dessert. read more

Okay, so I was excited to try this place since it's rated number one in Carpinteria. I live in the area and love Mexican food, so I've tried all the spots around here. Usually, I like to order a bean, rice, and cheese burrito with guacamole as a baseline--it's my way of gauging what a Mexican joint has to offer. I ordered the bean, rice, and cheese burrito, but it felt overpriced at $11, especially since guacamole was extra. Adding it would've made it way too expensive, and to top it off, they used pinto beans instead of refried beans, which was a deal-breaker for me. So, I pivoted and ordered a plain cheese quesadilla and a side of guacamole and chips instead. The plain cheese quesadilla was $9, and the chips and guacamole were also $9. When the quesadilla came out, it was incredibly simple--no garnish, no salsa, no guacamole, or sour cream on the plate. It honestly looked like a kid's quesadilla, and the cheese wasn't even melted. I sent it back and asked them to grill it a bit longer. About 40 seconds later, the guy came out and said it had been grilled more. But instead of putting it on the grill, they had microwaved it. There were no extra grill marks, and the quesadilla came back soggy--warm but not crispy at all on the outside. I was very disappointed. Now, let's talk about the guacamole. It was okay but definitely not worth $9. It was very light on avocado and overly heavy on tomatoes, onions, and other fillers. It was also a bit watery. Overall, I was very disappointed with what I ordered. I didn't try the meat burritos or anything else, so maybe that's where I went wrong. However, everything seemed extremely overpriced--typical beach pricing. Man, I wish they had just put my quesadilla back on the grill. That was so sad and disappointing. The prices are really good and the portion sizes are Huge (my torta lasted me two meals)! Dropped by for a quick bite on my way home. It's a small place with ample amounts of outdoor tables. I had the breakfast burrito with bacon. Initially, I was considering chorizo, but the cashier said bacon was one of the more popular options in the burrito. The burrito was decent, but the bacon was not crispy at all. Bacon should be crispy. I had guacamole on the side so the burrito in combination with that, cilantro, salsa and lemon made it good. I also had a bite of the torta which was okay as well. Cruising through Carpenteria on my way back from San Luis Obispo and decided to pull off and find somewhere for lunch. Craving tacos and this place looked like it might fit the bill. It was fairly empty when I walked in and I ordered two verde tacos and a horchata. Horchata was okay, nothing spectacular and certainly not worth $3.50. I waited... and waited for my order...and waited...and waited...and WAITED. I watch at least three other customers come in and pick up to go orders. I asked the clueless girl running the register where my order was. She said there were two orders ahead of me. How long does it take to put some pork on a tortilla? After THIRTY minutes, she finally handed me my bag. I sat down and opened it up-completely underwhelmed. I don't know how they stay so busy but I won't be coming back. Sadly no seafood to comment on but basic mexi food that's affordable and good can be found in abundance here. 12 different Salsas to chose from and of course; onion, cilantro and lime! They have chips and salsa as an appetizer for purchase. Tacos, burritos, and other options, but I've only had the tacos, so I will update if I end up opting for something else. The prices are affordable and the food is delicioso!! The salsa and guacamole s so good, I actually used them for a party catering style for just chips and Salsa ordering pint sized salsas for about 12 guests. Service is..... well you go to the cashier and order what you want. It's Carp so they have that southern style slowwwww drawl when it comes to getting you in and out the door anywhere you go in this town. My advice would be to call in ahead and order for pickup if a quick bite is what you are looking for. Lastly, plastic, plastic, plastic- if you follow my reviews- this is a no no in my book. Very good, authentic, and satisfying! I got the torta with asada (steak). If you've never had a torta before it's better than a sandwich- it's pure delight. Toasted bread (both sides) mayo, avocado and the normal suspects of lettuce and tomato, plus delicious meat of course make this sandwich a delightful and satisfying lunch. Note: if you can't handle spice you might want to take the jallepeño out of the torta. Some family members got tacos and quesadillas and a breakfast burrito and everyone agreed it was a very delicious lunch. Fresh food, quick service, inside and outside seating available. We visit Carpinteria many times per year and at some point we grab a burrito from Don Roge. It's been a solid 3 star restaurant over the years. You know what you are getting. During our last visit, the burrito was barely a 1 star. After a few bites, we threw them away. Different meats in each one but equally poor quality. It's an unfortunate change.
