I am leaving this review because what happened during my visit could have had serious consequences. I have a dairy allergy, not a preference and not lactose intolerance. Before ordering, I informed staff of my allergy and specifically requested that my sandwich be made without provolone cheese. My husband also reminded staff that I could not have cheese. We repeated this multiple times to make sure there was no misunderstanding. What makes this especially concerning is that staff clearly understood I had a dairy allergy. When I ordered a salad, an employee immediately informed me that the poppyseed dressing contained dairy and helped me switch to a vinaigrette. That showed they were aware of the allergy and the need to avoid dairy products. Despite all of that, my sandwich was still prepared with provolone cheese. I discovered it after I had already begun eating. For someone with a food allergy, that is not a minor mistake. It is a serious food safety issue that could result in a medical emergency. When I brought the mistake to the staff's attention, I was shocked by the response. Instead of receiving a sincere apology, concern for my safety, or an offer to replace the meal or issue a refund, the response was dismissive. The explanation given was that the employee thought the sandwich modifications were for my husband rather than for me. Food allergies should never be treated casually. Customers trust restaurants to take allergy warnings seriously, especially after being informed multiple times. What concerns me most is not only that the mistake happened, but how it was handled afterward. If you or a family member has a severe food allergy, I would strongly encourage you to consider this experience before dining here. Allergy-related mistakes can have serious consequences, and based on my experience, I left feeling that my concerns were not taken seriously. First time ordering some takeaway for a picnic and was so impressed with the very friendly service and really tasty food. Sometimes you just need to not eat fried food and this is the best place for healthier fare! Really tasty wraps, salads, and sammies. Don't sleep on their coffee, either, I got an iced caramel latte and it was perfect -- not too sweet and the coffee is really good and strong. We tried a little of everything: chicken salad salad, chicken salad croissant, a BLT, and a chicken ranch wrap. Everything was outstanding. Love the chips they have, too (made in Michigan). They're not too salty! Great place for our late morning breakfast and coffee. It was pretty busy but line moves quick, we found a table without an issue and food came out quicker than expected. We each had a breakfast sandwich and my croissant was warm and fluffy. They have breakfast items, decent - good coffee, a good selection of lunch items and boutique shop for perusing. What a great place to stop for breakfast or lunch! I had the tuna wasabi half sandwich with the tomato mushroom soup and it was delicious. I actually took my husband back to try it and we drove from Toledo! It's very charming and the employees very nice and efficient. If also is a sort of gift shop And you can buy snacks as well. Great spot located on Catawba Island. This is truly a one stop shop when you are in town. From their sandwiches, to their alcohol selections, to even their gift section. They have a great little patio outside to enjoy your meal with friends, or seating inside by the coffee shop. The staff was extremely friendly when asking for recommendations and helping me decide what to order. My favorite part of Rudder's is all the nautical gifts they have to offer & selection of home accessories. Rudder's makes it easy to visit with bike racks & a gravel parking lot. I ordered the chicken bacon ranch wrap, and it was very good! The sandwich came with either a side of chips or coleslaw. Rudderless: The Worst Cold Brew I've Ever Had. If you, like me, are heading home from a weekend on the island and are enticed by Rudder's signs promising "Espresso!", "Cold Brew!" and the like, DO NOT be fooled. I'm sure their iced mocha sugar bombs are fine, but if you're used to actual quality coffee, this ain't it. My wife and I both took a few sips before literally getting sick to our stomachs. The thing is, cold brew SHOULD be really simple - steep some good beans in coffee at room temp for 12 hours. Boom. But in case anyone from the restaurant is reading, here are your issues: 1) You started off with over-roasted beans (it's VERY burnt-tasting), which 2) also tasted a little stale - even if everything else was fine you were doomed from the start. But then 3) you then used either too small of a grind or not a fine enough mesh filter - there was an absolutely disgusting grittiness to it that's totally unacceptable. Oh, and 4) you definitely let it steep too long. There's a difference between strong and over-steeped, and the bitterness tells me it was the latter. The worst part is we waited 15 minutes for this experience, because despite being fully staffed, the crew didn't really seem to care about cycling people through! There are two separate lines and both of them were slow as molasses. When my order was ready, and I was finally next in line to pay, the cashier decided to walk off to the back room for a few minutes for who knows what - to which none of the other staff popped over to cover the register. Just bafflingly bad. The ONLY reason for 2 stars is because the staff was friendly (even if woefully inept). Huzzah! read more

This is a tough choice. The food and groceries selection is very good, but they are a bit high on the price point for what you get. The staff is great, the sandwiches are good, but you can get a better meal just down the road at Twin Oast (I have no affiliation I have recently eaten at both) for about the same price and get good beer to go with it. Excellent! Easy to drive by, but this place is as charming as can be. The service is quick and very friendly, and while you wait for your food you can browse the interesting selection of gourmet food and drink in their little market area. There is also a separate store with knickknacks and the standard islandy themed stuff. They have a sandwich menu, homemade sides and good iced tea. For breakfast they have some pretty decent pastries and good coffee. Nice place to chat over lunch (shaded outdoor courtyard with tables, too), and they have board games lying around if you have a little extra time. read more

Food was good, but was looking for a place where with waitstaff. Having to order at counter was sort of a turn off. Patio was sufficient and food came out quickly. Met a friend here for a late lunch. Friendly staff that aimed to please. Good service. Had a Power Boat Salad that was very fresh a flavorful. It came with a lemon vinaigrette that was light and provided taste without overpowering the salad ingredients. My friend had tomato mushroom bisque that was delicious. Staying right up the road and I came here twice in one day. Cool little store with household decorating stuff (if your into the nautical theme). They're pretty trusting. Didn't see any cashier or register anywhere. Guess you pay in the deli part. Great beer selection. The GLBC display was nice to see! Only thing that I would fault is it expensive. I like this place bc it is the only place I can think of where you can get a bite to eat and not feel lethargic for the rest of the day. It has a nice ambiance/decorative! The area is more known for its beer/pub type food and it is nice to find a place that is nice, fresh and light. I would give it more stars, but the sandwiches just need a little more flavor to them and they don't heat your sides (baked beans are served cold). I have not had their coffee, but it sure does smell good. It's pretty good so I'll be back! read more

Stopped here for coffee and lunch on our way out of Port Clinton. We all had the chicken salad (whether on a salad or in a sandwich) and it was delicious. Iced coffee was a little acidic, but was good after adding a little cream.
