Sometimes fusion works, sometimes it doesn't. Here, both results exist. If I just had a spicy miso lit, I would have been massively disappointed. The broth was too spicy, while the ground pork proved to be ineffective. The extra order of chashu was not my style either. It's not pork belly but more of a marinated pork neck, which didn't really do it for me with ramen. Get me a bowl of white rice and some sauteed pea-pod stems...and maybe I can dig it. I was neutral-positive to the shoryuken ramen. While I can appreciate the Chinese elements to the ramen, it ultimately didn't fit me. The redeeming element for both was that the noodles were quite good, with a nice bite to them. However, what saved this place for me were the onigiri starter and the tori paitan ramen. The onigiri looked elegant and colorful The blow torching of the rice was neat and the savory filling inside was plentiful, which was spicy beef. The tori paitan was fantastic. I enjoyed the chicken-based broth thoroughly as it wasn't too thick or thin. The fried chicken strips and chicken chicharron were crispy and proved to be a nice contrast to the un-crispy elements in the noodles. The heirloom cauliflower was a colorful touch and was lightly cooked before serving. It didn't taste raw yet it wasn't soggy. The execution of the egg was acceptable. The one we had came back to check up on us a little into our meal to make sure we were enjoying the ramen and then came to grab the trays when we finished. I think I saw the owner cooking up the ramen in boiling water. It's packed with non-asians, I was the only one there today! I got the miso lit and it was pretty decent, at the end it does get very salty. There's like minced pork and not chau siu in it...The spicy comes from the chili oil that is plopped on top of the ramen...my friend got the shoryuken ramen and that was fine, the broth was decent. I didn't leave overstuffed so maybe they need to provide a little bit more noodles as I would think the guys who come will leave hungry? They have free tap water in the back now! Went here once after ice skating at night in Boston and the vibe there is just so chill. It's just my personal preference but I like their neon lights inside of the restaurant. We ordered The Dope Yolk as a starter and I've never really had Japanese cuisine before and I tend to not stray away from the regular crab and shrimp seafood, so I was hesitant to try it because there was uni in it. But it was actually pretty good, reminded me of eating rice with soy sauce but fancier. My husband and I were immediately greeted as we walked into Ruckus. We were each given a menu and told that we could sit wherever we wanted. When you are ready to order, you head up to the cashier. After the ordered is taken, payment is also expected. I must say that I love my traditional Japanese ramen shops with the traditional broths so it was very difficult for me to rate Ruckus. I wouldn't say that I wasn't already prevued to the non-traditional menu. With low expectations, I could only ask myself one question when writing this review, which is, is it tasty? For appetizer, I ordered the salmon larb appetizer. Larb is a Thai style kind of ceviche/salad. Traditionally Thai larb would consist of a cooked protein, either ground chicken or beef, that is tossed with diced cucumbers, chili, mint leaves, cilantros, shallots or red onion. It is also sometimes accompanied by lettuce for serving. The dressing consists of chili, lime juice, fish sauce, and sugar. You get sweet, spicy, and sour all in one bite so you can expect an explosion of flavors. With all of that being said, the salmon larb served at Ruckus is definitely a unique take on this traditional Thai dish. The salmon larb had chopped uncooked sushi grade salmon, cucumbers, seared avocado, and cilantro. It also comes with two rice crackers with black sesame seeds. I must say the experience was nostalgic and shocking at the same time. It was familiar in that I have experienced this flavor profile in the past. It is shocking in that the use of raw salmon and avocado signaled in my mind a more subtle taste of a traditional salmon tartare. And that's when it hits you, this dish is anything but subtle in flavor. It's beautifully plated, however, the taste is one to ponder. I am not a fan. Raw salmon and fish sauce doesn't jive. Onto the ramen, and we knew not to compare it to traditional ramen, was not all that great. My husband ordered the shoryuken ramen, keeping to traditional flavors, while I had the special duck ramen, me being adventurous. The shoryuken ramen has a shoyu broth, in other words, a soy sauce base broth. It contained a soy egg, bok choy, pork neck chashu, scallion, marinated yuba (tofu skin), and furikake (Japanese seasoning). I tasted my husband's broth and his chashu. The chashu was dry while the broth was lacking. I was more adventurous by ordering the special duck ramen. My ramen came with sliced duck breast, foie gras, and duck confit. I ordered a soy egg as an additional topping. That was delicious. The duck breast was overcooked. The foie gras was delicious and the duck confit was okay. The broth was overpowered by the spicy crunchy chili paste that topped off the ramen. The noodles was not bouncy or slightly chewy. I can't pinpoint if it was undercooked or just not great noodles to begin with. My husband and I went for early dinner and the restaurant was fairly empty with one other party in the restaurant. The restaurant is small while the white tiles gave it a cold laboratory look. I would say the artwork is funky/eclectic. The music was at times disagreeable with profanity so I was glad I didn't bring my son. It was also loud so this restaurant is not an ideal location to hold conversations. Overall, I give it an A for effort and execution. In terms of actual flavors, it's a C+. It's sad to say this but my husband and I were both in agreement that we would not be coming back. The Food: For appetizers, we ordered the Dope Egg Appetizer which was as dope as the name implied!!! It's a marinated duck egg yolk served with various spices and seasoned rice. For entrees, we ordered the Kimchi Bibim Guksu, Black Garlic Mazemen, Shoryuken Ramen, and Miso LIT Ramen. The verdict was that the Shoryuken and Miso LIT ramen were the best. I had the Miso Ramen and loved it because it was decently spicy and was a perfect combination of Asian flavors and spices. It had grilled corn in it which was a nice touch as it made it a little sweet. The broth was excellent and I finished it till the last drop. The Kimchi Guksu doesn't come with any meat, but we added Fried Chicken to the order for an extra $3 and it was worth it! BEST HIDDEN GEM EVER! I love the food and most importantly, I love the vibe. All around amazing spot. Anyone can feel comfortable with the awesome upbeat music and a friendly staff. As for any reviews about not being traditional, I really don't think that's the point. I think it's a fun expressive way of allowing people who aren't familiar with the cuisine to try it out without feeling awkward. I always come in and Cody is always there to help me make choices with different types of dishes and he never fails. I also read reviews that stated that Ruckus was pricy- I work downtown and spend an average of $20 for lunch, ANYWHERE! Anything less than $20 is a steal especially when they give you a giant bowl that I can barely finish. Personally I find Ruckus value price especially with how much food I get. Modern ramen with a funky, fresh perspective. Cool street-style art along the walls. It's what I would image a Roy Choi establishment to be like if he had a restaurant in Boston. I came in around 2PM on a weekday. It was definitely an off-time as the entire restaurant was empty (I don't like eating during the lunch rush anyway). Someone greeted me right away and told me about the specials. I sat at the bar facing the kitchen. I ordered the fried pork belly onigiri and tori paitan ramen. The onigiri is shredded pork belly with rice wrapped around, and then fried. It came with lightly pickled onions on top. I would recommend skipping this appetizer. The onigiri is quite large, not huge on flavor but mildly salty. As I was eating it, some bits of pork belly were warm and some cold. I don't think the temperature variation was intentional. Onions were a good compliment to the onigiri. The tori paitan ramen was OK and different from other chicken paitans that I've had before. I was expecting a hot, thick broth and lots of flavor. It was warm at best, and flavor lacked depth that I craved. The fried chicken was slightly dry. But the winners in this ramen were the crunchy chicharron and soft boiled egg that had miso mixed in the yolk. Totally delicious! But some soul searching with business "vision" and the whole "fusion" concept left wanting. Boston has a dangerously saturated ramen scene. Ramen is not a fusion novelty, nor a gourmet. Ramen is a humble food popularized after WW2 Japan to feed the masses... Something college kids and working class Asians all relate too well to... Ruckus breaks that connection for me and turned up the hip-pop funky fusion both in price and flavors. Consider: The price for a ramen here will get you an aged steak in Irvine California, OR, a superior bowl of hand pulled beef noodles in Flushing is $6.5. While all dishes elaborately made, portions are smaller than Boston average, and broth on the salty side. Nevertheless, I commend the chefs who put a lot of thoughts and effort into making a gourmet bowl of art. I can tell they take ramen seriously. You order like in a coffee shop, pay at cashier get a number. No service other than giving you the food when it's done. Leaves me a bit conflicted when gauging tip percentages. My main issue is portions are kid's size. To feed an adult, you'd have to get extra noodle refill, extra veggies and pork... on top of an order that already starts at $14-17. When they serve all the extra stuff- unlike other ramen places that serve them in separate vessels- Ruckus puts those "extras" in the same bowl as if they are serving the same order without any of the extras... Which raises the question: If you can fit every extra in your designated bowl easily, why make the original portion size so small and leave such a blank in a bowl that's designed for bigger portions? Despite explanation from establishment, I remain unconvinced: Suppose I have a uber that fits 3 people, but I only allow 2 in unless you pay me extra, how are the customers going to feel about that? Also come with the expectation you're not getting the age-old traditional tonkotsu/shoyu/miso flavors. If you like a little experiment, it can work out. But if you're looking for trusty classics, there're alternatives I'd steer you to. In Chinatown, one can get decent portions of beef noodles for under $10. That's the options local folks are looking at. Maybe Cambridge/Somerville would be better places for cafe hipster style overpriced Wapanese ramen? read more

Worth a try, but it's just another mediocre ramen spot with obscenely loud hip hop music. If the whole concept of Ruckus is to cause a commotion and rumpus, please do add a drink menu filled with alcohol beverages. Ordered the fried pork belly onigiri and it was quite delicious, all except for how the rice ball was fried on the outside and soft in the inside. It tasted like biting into the burnt part of the rice in the rice cooker, which I love, but it really just doesn't work well in an onigiri. The sauce was sweet and flavorful, and the pickled onion brought out a sharp, sour, and crisp taste. I also ordered the shoyu ramen and everything in the bowl was on point aside from the dry and semi-hard noodles. The shoyu broth was not too heavy or overbearing, but was rich in flavor from the tasty pork. The bowl also came with half an egg, bok choy, and yuba (tofu skin). All in all, it was a tasty and flavorful meal which I wouldn't mind having or not having again. read more
