A decent dive bar at Coney Island. We stopped for a cold drink and a snack before hitting the beach. It was really hot. My granddaughters had frozen lemonades and fries. I had a Cuba Libre ($15). There's seating outside, inside at the bar, and long tables. The staff was efficient. read more

Never actually been here even though I walk down to the pier all the time, but this time, after watching the fireworks, I just had a case of the munchies and was gearing for something small to nom on. I figured what the hell, wondered in here and ordered the crab cake sandwich (crab cake on bun) and it's a small fried crabcake patty with onion(cut a lil too thick) and lettuce on a bun. Service was nice and pretty quick all around despite it being the busy summertime on the pier. Definitely a little smaller than I thought and definitely didn't expect it to be fried but honestly, the taste of the crabcake itself was very good. It was unmistakenly genuine crab meat and had that murky, slightly earthy flavor you get with crab innards that's kind of hard to find in crab cakes. It was my 1st time to Coney Island this summer and my husband and I wanted a distinctly Coney Island eating experience. As we don't eat hot dogs (and weren't about to wait in the long Nathan's lines anyway), we were attracted to Ruby's instead. Frozen margaritas? Check. A full bar in fact. Decent selection of food beyond pizza and hot dogs and nachos? Check. I got a crab cake sandwich and my husband got a turkey burger. I also decided to get cheese fries because that was my Nathan's order in middle school when I would go to the one in my mall's food court. They were nice and crispy. FYI cheese fries are not on the menu but you can ask to add cheese on your fries for like $1. They use nacho cheese. Good prices? Check. My bill was less than $30 and that's a win to me in a touristy place. Nice bartenders? Check. They were friendly and attentive. My only qualm with Ruby's was the actual ordering experience. It was a little messy. People were just gathering near the counter and not really forming a line so it was hard to tell who was next. And the cashiers seemed a little overwhelmed, and weren't doing much to help the situation. These poor french tourists ahead of me were looking particularly perturbed because they weren't being helped, but I guess it's just one of those places where you've gotta be assertive. Food was awesome, but the lady that took our order made our experience! I ordered the clam strips and she recommended the shrimp po boy, the food did not disappoint! The women really went above and beyond, I asked for cocktail sauce for the clam strips and the male worker just said "we don't have any" the women heard him, went in the back, came out and said "I'll make some for you." Staff were very nice and friendly and the corn dogs came out pretty quickly. The corn dogs were just OK. The hot dog itself was kind of soggy and had a pretty sad texture. Maybe their other items are better, but I wouldn't get this corn dog again. I would probably get a Nathan's instead. read more

Don't like to write a bad reviews but this one should be said, yesterday I was harassed by the bartender of this place named destiny who also called herself manager which is hard to imagine. After spending some hours on the sun with my good friend that I didn't see for a couple months we decided to go for a beer somewhere cool. Ordered drinks and food from nice bartender, who asked to open a tab we were enjoying our beer and talking while waiting for a food. Same bartender in a few mins asked to close the tab as she were leaving cus her shift was over so I said fine give me receipt. Right after check was on the bar for me to sign another woman approached us in a split second saying "I need a slip right now" looking at me like was about to get a hammer in her hands and break the bar. I said "yes, I know, I'm about to sign it now" at what she repeats that she already said that she needs it now in louder voice with very nasty attitude I was shocked. Clearly, she was staring a fight with me and at the same time was very pressuring. I asked her to give me some space so she can come back in a minute. Even worse reaction starts coming out of her mouth! Now I'm already annoyed that some random idiot yelling at me saying that she is big boss here, like I care, when I just came to hang out and have a good time at the first place. I sign the check just to make her leave, leave a tip, which I shouldn't be even thinking of doing in this situation and our whole great mood is ruined. Me and my friend were speechless The other bartender who was supposed to leave is back to serving the crowd and was there all the time till we left without any rush. Why was it created? The customer at the bar or restaurant is not a child and doesn't need an orders from wait staff, EVER! I worked behind the bar in nyc for over 10 years and know the business from A to Z. Checks can be transferred to other staff so customers don't feel rushed, they come to the place not participate business, they just wanna enjoy what the place sells. And even though when check needs to be closed you don't have to be an asshole and create a drama that I wanna to run away from that place and forget about it like about bad dream. Bartenders like destiny, which is I'm not even sure told me her real name, should be treated at the anger management department at the first place before she steps behind the bar. Desperate behavior is very ugly, and humiliation of customers should be a violation that authorized by law. After this owner of this place came by so I told him about everything, apologies and free round of drinks was offered which is at least smth but you all know that it doesn't cure what was ruined. Even in my worse thirst I won't go to this place anymore! read more

Although I have never had more than a bottle of beer here, they never mind my walking through and are just as friendly regardless if you are a customer or just there to look at their photo collection. I was trying to be kind to this business by holding off on my review or contacting any press/media giving them chance after chance to make it right but I've been ignored consistently on June 18th 2024 after traveling from Massachusetts I dined here at rubys with my best friend from Finland in the picture as u can see there is a bag of ice on the table I was severely injured by an umbrella that wasn't properly secured by the establishment staff in one of the tables next to me as I was chatting with another group of customers I was hit pretty hard in the head as it flew out from one of the tables when it was a bit windy other customers rushed to help get it off me my best friend as well as many patrons and employees witnessed this incident but failed to accommodate me, didn't care if I was ok no manager came out when I asked to speak with one multiple times no incident report has done I didn't wanna make this public and I didn't wanna have to make this a legal issue but this restaurant has done nothing to help me and this is completely there mistake they have a duty to keep there guests as well as employees safe and since they haven't answered my numerous phone calls over the past month except one time and told me to call back at a time which I did about 5 times and had no answer I've been suffering severe migraines since the incident has occurred and this is not ok I'd never recommend this establishment unfortunately I had a horrible experience and nobody cared not ok at all!!! A bag of ice you see on the table is all they did to account head injury after we had to ask the waitstaff multiple times this is ridiculous customer service I've waitresses for over 10 years and never seen another restaurant establishment handle something so poorly in my life. read more

Ruby's is a historic part of Coney Island. It's the most popular bar along the Boardwalk. They have been there longer than almost any business. It may only be beaten by Nathan's. The beer selection is kind of poor but considering it's a tourist area it's not as expensive as other places in New York. It has only about 5 beers on tap, which is kind of weak but at least some are crafts. It has one of its own. The Ruby's Amber Ale is pretty fucking good, even if it's $8 for a cup but it does have great taste. It's food is more typical of a bar. There isn't that much good to eat for vegetarians. It does have a vegetarian, not vegan, burger. The actual bar itself is pretty cool to look at and feel the history. It has been there since 1934 and has lots of memorabilia on display. The walls are covered with old photographs. If you're at Coney Island you need somewhere to drink and eat. It's recommended that you try Rubys and learn some history. The beer is better than the food, but there's many other places around the Boardwalk to eat something. read more

Went here on a lovely Sunday afternoon for a bit of respite from the sun and a bit of liquid courage for Luna Park. (Yes, I'm a chicken!) This place seemed as good as any and we were glad to see there was outdoor seating, as well as a roomy indoor bar and tables for those eating inside. There was plenty of room, so we went to the bar and grabbed seats and ordered a frozen pina colada and frozen margarita with salt. The waitress was friendly and I watched her pour a new pack of salt for my margarita. We closed our tab but drank our drinks inside. It turned out to be a complete waste. Firstly, we were so disappointed because there seemed to be no alcohol in the drinks. Secondly, it took about four gulps before we were left with nothing but ice!! I kept looking at the waitress hoping she might see if we needed anything else, but she just looked past us, even as I know she saw us complaining that our drink was ice. But I let it be as I also wasn't in the mood to call her over ask her whether she accidentally gave us virgin drinks or ask to why we were left with a bunch of ice in our drinks. The place was not busy and she saw us but I guess since we closed our tab she didn't worry about us anymore. 12 bucks a pop for a mediocre slushee and we had to go somewhere else for a beer afterwards! I will skip past this place next time but I gave two stars because of the location, because there was plenty of room, and we didn't try the food. If you're coming for an alcoholic beverage, I suggest having a beer to be safe! read more

Did my first visit to Coney Island recently. It was quite enjoyable on a Thursday in April, though I doubt I would want to do it on a Saturday in July. After doing the cliche Nathan's hot dog and picture of the Wonder Wheel, we stopped in here to enjoy a cocktail or three and just watch the boardwalk. They've kept mementos of the long history of the space, but it's obviously been kept up to date. The cocktails are fruity and smallish, but at $10 not a bad deal considering the location. The bartender was on top of it and friendly. We didn't eat anything (cheese fries from Nathan's still heavy on the tummy) but really enjoyed the ambience and experience. read more

Ruby's of Coney Island is no relation to the Ruby's Diner chain that exists across several states, most notably on the piers of Southern California, as well as in NJ and PA. This one was more of a wet house than a dry house. A beachfront bar with average food and fun times for locals and tourists alike. Prices were high-ish, but that's what you get on the boardwalk. Sadly this legendary institution is no more. I only had the chance to hang out here twice, and now I wish I'd come in more often (I've been to the big CI about 20 times) because it's one of those places you imagine will always be around. The experience I had at this bar & grill is so infuriating. Only wish John from "Bar & Rescue" would visit this place on such an iconic boardwalk so that he can expose the horrible service by the pride driven male bartender who I feel swindled. Coney Island visitors/residents deserve better then thid. I walked in drawn by the crowd around the cooking area but got turned off easily & quiclkly after seeing how dirty the floor was & seeing a waitress take a fry off a customers plate that she was bringing them. After that, I turned to the bar to the left & was left waiting 10 minutes beside the one & only customer in front of me before I was finally asked if I'm being helped? All this while guy in front of me was simply waiting to pay for his drinks. The bartender looked me in my eyes and told me that a frozen Piña Colada was $12 as he pointed to 16 ounce plastic cups. Bear in mind, there were no other cups in view where he pointed/waived his hand. He gives me $3 back out of $20 & I ask what is this? He then takes a defiant & rude tone telling me "I told you it was $12" & turned away with a disgusting attitude. His colleague (woman bartender) noticed I was growing frustrated & came over to see what was the issue. I asked her, how is it that your coworker double talked me, is not taking accountability for what he said and is not making it clear to customers as to which drinks cost what by simply showing the 2 different cup sizes? The woman bartender showed me the 2 different cup sizes & offered to give me a $12 cup. After being deceived by the dishonest bartender I would have preferred my money back but that was not offered to me so I left dissatisfied & again feeling swindled. Hopefully the Owner of this place reads this review & takes a good look at this bartender & all of his staff that cater to the public. If this bartender can deceive a customer as casually as he did me, I'm sure he would not think twice about pocketing money he overcharges your Customers plus the irreversible damage he does by treating people as he did me can & will lead to customer disatisfaction & a horrible reputation. read more

Sipping the frozen Margarita felt amazing at the time, but I shouldn't have done that when I was severely dehydrated. I got hammered pretty quickly after that. Beware of the Margarita as you barely taste alcohol but have no idea how much alcohol is in it. This place is incredibly underrated. Destiny and Meagan (aka 'DM' ‐ which is what I wish they'd do to me) have been the epitome of perfection. In bartending as well. Meagan is a master of her craft. Her people skills are impeccable. Literally. Everytime I see her interact with customers, I feel like I'm on Punk'd. And who doesn't wanna feel like a celebrity?!?! And Destiny.. what can I say about this poetic wordsmith? Her diverse dichotomy of disengaged debonairs disenchants the derelicts of dirty Brooklyn. I make it a point to always stop by Rubie's when I'm back in NY each summer. I've been going to Ruby's since I was old enough to drink in 2005. I've always had a great time with my friends, and love the improvements they've been making over the years. Food portions and quality are extremely fair for the price, especially you're on the heart of the boardwalk. I would definitely recommend stopping by for a beer and a snack. The family who runs the place has owned it for as long as I've been going and are always really friendly and happy to chat. read more

Sat for about 5 minutes at the bar while the bartender studiously cleaned the bottles behind the bar. Those were some meticulously clean bottles when she was done! $10 margaritas that were ok. Would have been better if I hadn't had a $7.50 margarita at Margarita Island earlier that was oh so much better as well as a $9 margarita at Red Doors that was out of this world and twice as large. Ordered a corn dog and an order of mozzarella sticks and we were allowed to eat them at the bar as we sipped on our tiny overpriced margaritas. Corn dog was great, mozzarella sticks were good. Meh experience. 2 bartenders TOTALLY ignored us when we were finished our drinks. The bottle cleaner never came back after she took our initial order, the second one ignored us AFTER we told her we were ready for the check. She was too busy serving the dude who bellied up to the bar WITH HIS TODDLER!!!! Is that even legal? The kid couldn't be more than 5 years old, but she sure enough took a seat at the bar.
