Also ordered walleye with broccoli and they ran out of broccoli and offered string beans instead. The fish tasted like it's few days old and the string beans came from a can. The two stars are for the service. Our sever was friendly and attentive, and did her job well. The food, however, was awful. The onion petals were edible, but if you bit into the middle of one, the onion would pull out of the breading, leaving you with an empty shell of breading. And the spinach and artichoke dip was the worst I've ever had. The Texas toast it was served with was cut far too thick, and over-toasted, so it hurt my mouth to bite into it. Worst of all, the dip itself was covered in a thick layer of breadcrumbs. You're dipping bread into the dip, so why on earth would you cover the dip with more bread? It makes no sense. We left the restaurant feeling fairly nauseated. My husband had the buffalo steak, and he said it was the toughest steak he has ever eaten. He could barely get the tines of the fork to penetrate the meat. I do not recommend. Bleah. read more

On the way to Mount Rushmore, we were trying to find food and this place came up. The interior of this restaurant is really beautiful. But the food was sub par. I ordered a buffalo steak and it was really dry. I asked for it to be medium well. It came with mashed potatoes and a steak sauce. No vegetables or anything. Need to start off with this was my first Mother/Daughter trip. The first night we arrived and had dinner at Ruby's. Our service and food was Amazing! We had both ordered the Prime rib. SECOND night we opted to go again because our 1st experience was great. We were seated right away, our server took our order and we also ordered an appetizer. We had the Fettuccine Alfredo and added shrimp, also ordered the spinach dip for the app. We were given our food long before our app arrived( because she forgot to place the order for it) the meal itself was Disgusting, sauce from a jar and cold shrimp.also the parm cheese was most likely from las year! The only thing edible was the dinner salad which my daughter had 2 of because she could not eat her meal. The spinach dip was good once we ( Finally) recieved it. When leaving we were stopped out on the board walk stating we shorted the bill by $10 which was not possible because my daughter made sure to count it twice. I added a tip of 8 dollars to a 65 dollar tab, would have loved to have left more but our service and food were awful. We believe she was upset with the tip she received so said they were shorted. We stopped in Keystone for the night before going to Mount Rushmore. We selected Ruby's for dinner because it was located on the town strip near all of the shops and had decent reviews on Yelp. We weren't disappointed in our choice. The food was exactly the kind of comfort food we wanted. The homemade chicken noodle soup was fantastic, with plenty of chicken and tasty egg noodles. The chicken fried chicken and white gravy was also tender, juicy and flavorful. My wife had the spaghetti with meat sauce and was very happy with her meal as well. The service gets mixed reviews - and that's because of their set up. If you order drinks from the bar, you will have 2 waiters and 2 separate tabs (one for food - one for booze). This wasn't a big deal, but the contrast in service was apparent. Our food server, I believe her name was Deb, did a great job. The bar service was a little slow, but he was working the restaurant floor and an upstairs level as well, so we get it. Both were friendly, but paying two tabs and the inconsistency in service made an otherwise great experience a little awkward. All in all, Ruby's is worth the extra effort to give them your autograph twice. read more

Of the options is Keystone this was probably the best but was definitely not incredible. The ribs and steak were both a little dry but we're not terrible. The service was good but we struggled a lot to get a drink because you have to get served from the bar and not your waiter which we found frustrating and slow. The atmosphere was what I would call "outdated Wild West" but it was only fitting for the town and area. read more

Overnighting in Keystone to visit Mount Rushmore and this place was right down the street from my hotel, so decided to stop in on a rainy/snowy afternoon for some lunch. I was seated promptly and the staff was very friendly. I liked the "theme" of the restaurant. Decor looked like something you would see in a fancy Wild, Wild West saloon (not really sure how else to describe it lol but I thought it was cool) - gorgeous draperies, wall hangings, pictures etc. I kept lunch simple with Chicken Fried Chicken and Mashed Potatoes. Chicken was hot, crispy on the outside and nice and juicy/tender on the inside. I am never a huge fan of gravy, but their white gravy was delish. My mashed potatoes were yummy (homemade) - wish it was a little hotter. There were several Buffalo dishes that looked interesting. If I ever happen to be back in that area I would stop in to sample some more items off their menu. read more

I've been on a cross country road trip with my 5 children and we are here while in town to see Mt Rushmore. Children are ages 7, 13, 14, 15, & 20. The restaurant has a certain charm of yesteryear in its decor and the front of house staff are kind. The half naked women from the bar that harass you to buy alcohol in their hardly there sexy barmaid outfits, those we could do without. For an area that seems to draw more families than singles, I was not expecting skimpy barmaids in a family eatery nor for their outfits to look so low class. I don't mean to be harsh, just honest. I'm sure those ladies are working hard doing what's expected of them but as a mom on a family vacation...it really was not something I expected nor would ever seek out. And they are likely being told to push drinks but it came across as pushy and rude even. (Maybe the lady we had the most interaction with was having a bad or stressful day....I can only base this on what we experienced.) The gentleman who buses the tables was very kind and great at his job and our waitress was on the ball even joking with my 7yr old! They were fantastic! The food was "eh". My 14yr old son loved the Elk Burger! The other 4 of us had the special of the day which was a patty melt...we agree it was ok but it was quite a small bit of beef and not much flavor overall. The chicken tenders the youngest got were just basic and he enjoyed them. Overall, if we're ever find ourselves back in keystone in need of dinner, we will not eat here. read more

After more than an 8 hour drive from Omaha Nebraska to Keystone, SD, (we drove the Scenic Loop through the Badlands National Park on the way) we were tired and hungry. As we were checking into our hotel we asked for suggestions of places we could eat. Our hotel associate recommended The Ruby House Restaurant. We were not disappointed. I ordered their black bean burger which was delicious! Hubby ordered the dinner special which a Cajun pasta dish. It was delicious but he commented it was a little spicy for his tastes. He ate all of it though. Overall, the meals were great. Note: If you want to order alcoholic beverages they will be put on a tab separate from your meal. The bar hostess will come around to your table to take your order and will close out your tab and take payment. read more

The ambiance is great. It looks like an old time restaurant from the 1800s. Beautiful antiques. The food was not great. My steak tasted good but was a bit fatty with some gristle. The chicken fried steak was mediocre and the chicken Parmesan tasted like Chef Boyardee made the sauce. The fish and chips was not the white fish touted and there was more breading than fish. The bourbon ribeye was cooked to medium rare but you could not slice it with out much effort and then try to chew it. It felt like rawhide. The blue cheese salad dressing was water. We had the best meal at Ruby House. I found the restaurant on my maps when we were at Mount Rushmore and we were looking for a sit down meal. We went in the early evening so it wasn't very busy so we had no wait at all. Our server was excellent, she checked on us several times and was super nice. I got the elk burger, my mom got the buffalo stew, and my grandma got the chicken fried chicken. All of our meals were amazing, super fresh and really good quality! My burger was cooked perfectly and was very flavorful and juicy and my mom said her buffalo stew was very tender and also had lots of flavor. The environment is also very nice and has cool decorations and old country music and it's located in downtown Keystone so there's lots of shopping options close by! I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you're nearby and it's only about a 10 minute scenic drive from Mount Rushmore. read more

Nice restaurant with great food. Steak was ordered medium rare but was unfortunately delivered medium, but still tasty. Pasta was good. Teriyaki Chicken was so good and juicy. Baked potatoes were incredible. Decorations were fun, entertaining and informative. One negative was you were served by two different individuals if you wanted any adult beverages, bar is separate from restaurant. They had a cute spin on it, but still had to tip two people for dinner versus only one. When restaurant options are limited, it was a nice place to get some dinner. read more

This place was AWESOME! Our waitress, Cheyenne, was so gracious and patient with my kids. She helped them order their own drinks and food! While we waited for the food, I took the kids on a walk around the restaurant to look at ALL the photos and antiques. It was so neat! My husband ordered a house ale that he loved so much he got another! The bar on site was cool too. When you come in the restaurant they have a free newspaper with a mock history, then a real history on the back, it was super entertaining. The food was AMAZING!!!! We had Buffalo stew. I had it with a turkey bacon club on GF bread. My husband had the buffalo steak. My daughter had the 4 oz prime rib, and my son had the grilled cheese. There was not a crumb left!! I went to Ruby House 3 years ago when I was on vacation. There were tablecloths on the tables, cloth napkins, and dim lighting. The food was excellent! The atmosphere was very nice. Well, I just went to Ruby House a few days ago, and it has changed so much! No more fancy style atmosphere. Paper napkins, no tablecloths, and the waitress made me uncomfortable with how she kept rushing my table to hurry along as we placed our order, and she kept rubbing my child's head. Prime rib had no flavor, very dry & tough. I use to really like this place, but it has really gone downhill. read more

Ruby House delivered beyond my expectations. If you are between Front Porch and Ruby House, PICK RUBY HOUSE. We visited on a Sunday night and ate outside. I had the bison ribeye, sweet potato fries, soup, and caramel apple pie. I'd recommend it all. Went here with my wife and 2 daughters (8 & 5), and we ordered 2 items off of the kids menu. Mac & Cheese, and Spaghetti. $6 each. So the Mac & Cheese was just Kraft, or something cheaper. So we got a half box of cheap Mac, with very little cheese. The spaghetti sauce was basically just thin tomato sauce. Very little seasoning. Neither dish came with any sides whatsoever, so we got about $1.50 worth of food for $12. My wife got the Buffalo burger $13, which tasted okay, but was quite small, and had very few topping options. Food was horrible, basically what you would expect from a gas station. Had the buffalo melt, there was a single patty about the size of a McDonalds single cheeseburger patty. The cheese was a Kraft singles cheese slice and the patty was so well done it was like eating beef jerky. Service was on par with the food as well, we were seated and it took 20-30 mins before someone came to take our order, this was even after asking the manager after about 15 mins of waiting. I totally expected this to be a kitschy tourist spot but couldn't resist. Oh my goodness how wrong I was! The food was fantastic. I had the Buffalo stew bread bowl that was the best bread bowl and stew I have ever had and i want it on chilly rainy days when I am back East. I cannot wait to return and have again. I'd like to say I want to try some other menu items but I know it's doubtful I will ever pull that trigger because I enjoyed the stew bread bowl so much. The pork tenderloin sandwich was HUGE! Other plates I saw being served at other tables looked delicious as well. The decor is the type with tons of photos and items covering all the walls and I was stunned how clean everything was. Not one speck of dust on anything and most restaurants that chose that decor is quite dirty/dusty but not here. Something I found odd but not off putting was alcohol is not served in the restaurant by your waiter. You can have it but you go to the adjoining western saloon themed bar and buy it there and bring it back to your table. All the food was under seasoned with no flavor. The waitress never refilled any drink at the table. Drinks from bar have to be ordered from a separate waitress that never visited our table after repeated requests from the waitress that did come to the table.
