    Rubies Fish Taco Especial
    Norman R.

A delicious fish taco for on-the-go when I am crossing the Coronado bridge heading home! Economically priced, flavorful and perfect for one-handed dining (smile). I prefer the standard fish option vice the various shrimp and "protein-of-the-month" offerings.

Rubio's is a good choice for lunch if you're on base. It's part of the Navy Exchange food court which overall gets fairly busy during middle of the workday. You'll order and then it's a short wait while they prepare your food (might as well stake out a table). They'll call out your ticket number when it's ready. The fish burritos haven't disappointed. They have a salsa bar but since Covid, you have to tell them which salsa flavors you want and how many (they come in little plastic containers). Goes well with the freshly made nacho chips on the side.

4/15/21 Ordered through the online pick up system a burrito with no beans. When I get home, I find to my disappointment that they put beans in it. I called them back to explain their error and requested a refund, only to be told that they will not process my refund over the phone and that I must come physically back with the order. I live 45 minutes away from this location. Very inconsiderate and unreasonable policy, especially given the coronavirus pandemic going on right now. Will be disputing this charge with my bank since they will not give me a refund for their mistake. Thank you for nothing

Meh. I prefer Alejandro's in Kalihi.

Rubio's (Coronado). (2.5 stars). "I'll take you to tha taco shop (vamonos). Big chile is what I got (chingo bling). Its cheaper than any spot (uh huh)." - Chingo Bling (Taco Shop). Seeing as how today was Taco Tuesday, I decided to try Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill which is located in the NEX Food Court on the Coronado Naval Base. Rubio's is a chain restaurant but it was either that or Panda Express and I wanted tacos damnit! :) I ordered the following: -Steak Street Tacos Street Tacos - $2.79. (2.5 stars). As I perused the menu, I saw STREET TACOS!! I ordered the steak taco and asked for cilantro minus the onions. Unfortunately, since it comes pre-mixed I couldn't have my beloved cilantro. Sniffle. As I picked up my order I noticed that these street tacos come with guacamole!! Luckily for me the nasty raw white onions were big enough for me to pick out of my guac. The tortilla was very soft and mushy thus making for a slightly unpleasant texture. The guac seemed to permeate through the tortilla thus leaving it soggy!! The steak had a nice seasoning and was cut into bite size pieces which was nice. The only issue I had with the steak was that it was still a bit tough!! Tsk tsk gristle seems to follow me everywhere!! The one thing that I did enjoy at Rubio's was their homemade salsa bar. The Diablo sauce was spicy and tasty! I wish I could have bought a bottle!! There were other sauces such as the picante and tomatillo salsa. --- All in all, given the choices at this food court, Panda Express, Five Guys, Rubio's, and Auntie Anne's, I would choose Rubio's. If I come back, I'll remember to ask for the guac on the side. Parking is ample and shared with the NEX (Navy Exchange).

Enjoying a San Diego tradition - having a fish taco at Rubio's Fresh Mexican Grill.

San Diego's home of the fish taco and other Baja inspired Mexican grill items. If you live in San Diego, you know what I am talking about. If you are visiting, give it a try. You will enjoy it.

The shameless $4 salsa Verde shrimp taco ($9 if you get the 2 tacos, beans and chips) from Rubio's. 4 tini piece of crap shrimp.
    Raul O.

What a shame Rubio's! The nerve to charge nearly $9 for 2 salsa Verde shrimp tacos, a tini container of beans, and a hand full of tortilla chips. At least make it worth something, or make it like the picture (with more than 4 shrimp). I will never buy shrimp tacos from you again. At nearly a dollar a shrimp, you should hide your face in shame.

The cheese enchiladas are delicious & filling. Been here 2x & customer svc is friendly! #El Paso Girl

All items came out fresh and delicious, with the clam chowder taking the cake. Each spoonful had multiple pieces of clam, with rich creamy notes throughout. Pro tip- try their bottled salsa which is brewed without vinegar by a local company. It's honestly so addicting and we ended up buying two bottles to take home. There was still a significant line, but when we finally got to the front, the waitress taking our order wouldn't even look at us. She spent a good portion of our "turn" chatting with another waitress before finally turning to us--still with zero eye contact. We ordered a cioppino, a clam chowder in a sourdough bowl, fish and chips, and a dozen oysters. I noticed she shouted the soup orders back to the kitchen but didn't say a word about the fish and chips. When I specifically asked her if she got the fish and chips, she said "yes," took my card, and sent us to a table. Our soups and oysters arrived after 15 minutes, but another 30 minutes passed with no sign of the rest of the meal. When I followed up with the same waitress to check on the status, she looked at the order and flatly told me there were no fish and chips on there. By that point, the restaurant was already closing. She asked if I still wanted them, but after waiting that long and dealing with that level of indifference, I just said no. Extremely disappointing experience. If you're going to stay open for customers, you should at least provide basic communication and hospitality. I won't be coming back.

The decor is sophisticated and rustic, and the large open windows give it a nice open-air feel. I was super impressed with the view on the second floor with the sophisticated decor and exquisite attention to detail. We decided to have dinner at the bar since we did not have reservations and there was a wait for a table. We were able to get seated at the bar right away. The bartenders were friendly and attentive and offered their food and drink recommendations. We ordered the calamari, brussels sprouts, lobster roll, and rib eye. Way too much food for two people but so worth it! The brussels sprouts were hearty and the calamari was nice and crunchy, topped with a zesty sauce. The lobster roll was served either Maine-style (cold) or Connecticut-style (warm). I ordered it cold and when it arrived, I did not leave a single crumb on the plate. The bun was buttered and nicely toasted with a massive amount of lobster filling in it. Served with fries, it was a great dish that left me satisfied but not overstuffed. My boyfriend had the ribeye and was cooked to his satisfaction. It was tender, salted well, and did not need any condiments added. We will definitely be back when we're in town!

But every once in a while, hubby has a special request & we make it happen. His San Diego wish? Thursday night all-you-can-eat lobster dinner at 100s Seafood Grill Buffet. And when I say seafood extravaganza, I mean it. Beyond the lobster, there were crab legs, oysters, sushi galore (maki, nigiri & sashimi), lots of Asian specialties plus plenty of American comfort-food favorites to satisfy just about everyone. Now, full disclosure: my feelings were a little mixed, but hubby? He was living his absolute best life. The lobster is served cut in half & broiled, which unfortunately made the meat sort of melt into the shell. Each half ended up being only a couple bites & you did have to wait in line to grab one when fresh trays came out (one half per person at a time). That said, credit where it is due: the kitchen brought out lobster trays pretty regularly, so the wait never felt unreasonable. Meanwhile, hubby proceeded to eat what I can only describe as his body weight in crab legs. His only critique was that he prefers them served hot rather than cold, although the hot butter on draft definitely helped make up for that. I also appreciated how many unique dishes were available beyond seafood, making the buffet feel more interesting than your standard steam-table experience. And for me, the dessert section was a standout, especially the gelato station, which I may or may not have visited more than once. At $56.99, my personal preference would probably be to spend that money at a really good sushi restaurant. But if your dream scenario involves unlimited lobster, crab legs, oysters & a seafood feast where you can try a little bit of everything, this place absolutely delivers. Final verdict? Maybe not my personal seafood fantasy but hubby was THRILLED & sometimes that's the most important review of all. NOM NOM NOM #YUM

I came here tonight with that in mind and got more than I hoped for. $1.50 oysters anywhere are great and these were a joy. While the menu suggested small or medium they were bigger, flavorful and fresh west coasts you'd pay triple for. Discounted California wines didn't hurt either. Then there was poorly described "herbed gnocchi in cheese sauce with bread crumbs". The author of the menu should be disciplined. This is the equivalent of describing the Sistine Chapel as "colored painting on wall, some nudes". This dish was so much more than that. Sliced Serrano peppers and greens topped off one of the best gnocchi dishes i may have ever had stateside or in Italy. Really. Rewrite that. Consider starting with the statement "this small dish may sexually arouse you". All for a happy hour in desperation of a good nights sleep, red-eyed rise and a longing to return.
