We love Blue Water! We like to get to the restaurant 15minutes before it opens to get in line. The place gets so crowded. The staff will take your order and assign you a table, so do not grab a table without their approval. The seafood all taste fresh. We love the halibut plate with lemon garlic butter. For the fish and chips, the red snapper with panko crust is our family favorite over the beer battered. Tip: we went at 2:30p thinking it is after the lunch rush, but the line was out the door on Sunday. We will stick to 15mins before they open.
Located on India street near Washington Street, this gem of a restaurant has been a local favorite for years. There's only street parking nearby so it can be tricky to find parking depending on the time and day. There's plenty of outside and inside seating and you can find a seat after placing your order at the counter. Ambience reminds me of a small fish market. The menu has a variety of seafood options which you can have cooked different ways. There are also sides and specials of the day. The food is always tasty and fresh. Prices are fair for seafood and the service is good.
I picked my folks up from the airport after their trip to Alaska and my mom was hangry because she had not eaten since breakfast. I asked her what she wanted and she said, "seafood", so I immediately thought of Blue Water, and we drove right over. We parked at a metered spot nearby & walked in at 5pm. Do note that there is no dedicated parking for Blue Water, so at busy times it may be tricky to find a spot, but we had no trouble today. In the main dining ordering area & on the side patio, there were a few tables that were occupied, but there was no ordering line. All of us wanted shrimp today apparently, so my dad and I both got a shrimp taco with lemon garlic butter & my hungry mom got the shrimp platter also with lemon garlic butter. The platter came with 8 shrimp, jasmine rice, and a lovely, fresh garden salad. The server who took our order and brought it out to us was very helpful & nice. They have a ton of fresh seafood on offer though so if shrimp is not your thing, there will likely be another delightful offering from the sea that will suit your fancy. We sat in the side patio area and it was very pleasant. We enjoyed our experience this evening very much! The tacos were big and had more than 5 shrimp in them, plus cabbage, pico, cheddar cheese & white sauce. One taco was pretty decently sized. If I'd been hungrier, two tacos would've been perfect, but today, I was happy with one taco. Yum! Mom enjoyed her platter. It was beautifully prepared. Blue Water also has a decent soft drink selection and beers and wine, but we all just had their water and it was very refreshing! :) By the time we left at 5:45, a line was forming out the door, so we really came out at a good time. I was spending the day in San Diego, but was heading back up to OC relatively early so I decided to grab a late lunch in lieu of dinner. I had been to SD twice before and wanted to check out somewhere I hadn't been. Enter Blue Water - the reviews and pics looks great, and the weather called for seafood, so I decided to head here and check it out. This Blue Water is located on India St in Mission Hills, though they have another location in Ocean Beach. Parking can be a little tricky, as there is no parking lot they are on a main road close to a split in a residential area. The interior is pretty spacious - the fish market is towards the front, and the ordering counter is in the back. Seating is spread out between the main area where the market is, a side room, and outdoors in the front. Decor and aesthetics are casual - very seafood restaurant-esque with straightforward design. The foot traffic set up so you order first and then find a table before they serve your meal to you. The menu is extensive - they have a large selection of fish that can be prepared several ways. It's a little overwhelming to take in, but there was no pressure for us to order; if there's a line all the more time to explore. I ultimately decided to get their mini shrimp tacos - these were served on a corn tortilla and topped with cabbage, tomatoes, onions, white sauce, and cheddar cheese with a side of tomatillo sauce. The tacos were great - super fresh, they didn't skimp on the shrimp, and all the flavors and textures worked really well together. I also ordered a cup of NE clam chowder which was good - not the best one I've had but for being in Southern California it held its own. Service was good - I'm seeing reviews of long lines but I think I came at the right time; there are barely a line to order and my meal was served shortly after that. Overall, Blue Water is a yes - I had a great experience here and wouldn't hesitate to return next time I'm in SD.

We love their fish tacos, the nachos, their sandwiches, the fried calamari. Taste is always on point. During lunch and dinner it gets busy but it is worth the wait.
Blue Water is a great spot when craving seafood. They are fresh plenty of selections .When we visit this place we always get our favorites, Classic Cioppino , and Sauteed Mussels and Clams. Usually, with these 2 bowls of delicious seafood, we also get their Fried Calamari but this time my Wife wanted to try their Homemade New England Clam Chowder Bread Bowl, and she also loves their Bread Chowder. This Blue water in this location never disappoints us, they are generous in portion, and the actual seafood sizes are decent , the food is always good. Staff are also always around to clean the tables or assist customers. Parking on Side streets, some are metered some are not and there's a small portion close by that is a paid parking .
I've been coming here for years and am surprised I haven't written a review yet! This place consistently knocks it out of the park. The fish is super fresh, servers friendly (even under pressure), and they have the best waffle fries in town. The interior is small and parking is tough (metered street spots only)--there is always a long line to order and the place is usually packed, but it's all worth the wait--every time. I've only ever gotten the tacos or the plates, but everything looks amazing. They offer a variety of options and seasonings. They've even got a great kids menu. Two outdoor patios. If you haven't been here, give it a try. This is the original location and tastes the best to me although the OB spot is also tasty and has an amazing view to boot. If you like seafood, this is THE place.
Serval years later update. Stopped by to grab dinner and they didn't disappoint. I got the plate I got the swordfish plate. The serving size was worth the $$$. Service was great. They offer indoor and outdoor patio seating.

I had a bowl of Cioppino, it came with a generous portion of mussels, clams, scallops, shrimp and red snapper in a delicious & savory broth with toasted sourdough bread. I was able to take half home for the next day, it's a winner and worth 5 stars for this meal alone! I also ordered a blackened salmon sandwich to go . It was on a French roll and had two slices of salmon on lettuce, tomato, red onions, with tartar sauce. My friend had grilled octopus with a side salad, he shared a portion with me. It was tender, meaty, and seasoned well. Menu highlights: Fried Calamari, Beer-battered fish tacos, Ahi Tuna, Shrimp tacos, Tuna Melt, Grilled fish tacos, Ceviche, Clam Chowder, Chicken tacos (kids menu item). Marinade choices: Blackened, Bronzed (Blackened with brown sugar), Chipotle, Garlic butter, Lemon butter, and Teriyaki. To the right of the entrance is the seafood market, sold by the pound to take home and cook: Ahi Tuna, Halibut, Mahi Mahi, Scallops, Shrimp, Pacific Snapper. Swordfish, and Yellowtail. Dear diary Had been waiting a while to try this place. It was busier than I expected on a Sunday morning. The vibe was super lively and upbeat. Parking is a hassle though, we had to park two blocks away so get there early if you want to park closer. We started with the calm chowder which was more watery than what I like but the flavor was good. Then we had the crab and medium shrimp which was *chef's kiss*. We finished with the red snapper and the Hawaiian wahoo tacos. Those were bigger than you think. Overall the wait was worth the trip there! You should definitely give it a shot.
1st time and I will be back. Lots of seafood choices to eat there or take with you to go. It's a market and a restaurant. Menu mainly seafood. Kids menu had chicken strips. The place is busy...but that is because it is so good. Worth waiting. Shrimp tacos were filling and so good and had lots of fresh toppings, cheese, avocado, sour cream, carrots which I was skeptical about but now I get it. Unique twist of flavors but delicious so just go with it! All food is made to order. There was also a sign with lots of sauces and garlic butters and lemons to add to your fish. Grouper tacos were so good. Super juicy and moist! No fountain drinks so I just bought an Arizona iced team. There is a fridge near the menus with sodas. There is also a sign with their beer selections. Staff brings you your food and they all were smiling! Which I was impressed with because it was busy! I found a picture on yelp and that is how I ordered! lol It is a busy place, good music playing but a bit on the louder side but good energy! Casual Place. Parking is a bit tough but we found a spot up the block.
I have passed by this Blue Water location in the Middletown neighborhood next to the highway numerous times before stopping by recently for dinner. The parking spaces in the adjacent lot seemed to be all dedicated to the neighboring businesses so I found a curbside spot along India St. A large parklet in front of the suite had several tables set up for al fresco dining, but it was empty during my visit. Everyone elected to sit inside the main dining room or in the covered courtyard next to it. There were a couple of refrigerated glass cases to the left when you walked in. It was the market side of the business with lots of fresh seafood on display. I didn't see any customers make purchases in that area as all of us decided to line up to order food/drink from the service counter. A two-sided menu sheet listed plenty of choices. Creating your own grilled fish plate was the featured entry. Sandwiches, salads, tacos, soups, sashimi, seafood cocktails, appetizers, and specials (entrees) were the other categories. I picked a cup of the Homemade Hearty Seafood Soup and the Classic Cioppino for my meal. After paying at the register, a numbered sign was given to me which I took to a table in the courtyard. Within 15 minutes, both items were delivered by a worker. The soup was a tomato-based broth with assorted seafood and vegetables. I believe some type of white fish was the main protein of which there were several chunks in the cup. It was warm and hearty as described. The cashier told me the kitchen was running low on scallops. They would supplement the cioppino with additional clams and mussels in place of the scallops. Shrimp and red snapper were the other components in the bowl of marinara sauce. Three pieces of toasted sourdough came with the order. There were at least a dozen mussels and nearly as many clams. I did notice a few scallops in the mix along with about four pieces each of shrimp and red snapper. For $30, it was a fair price for cioppino given the amount of seafood. I have eaten versions that cost 20 percent more with 20 percent fewer ingredients.
After our plane landed in San Diego, even before taking my phone off airplane mode, I had a hankering for seafood! Luckily, I found an old bookmark for Blue Water located just on the other side of the highway from the rent-a-car garage and even got a parking spot right in front of the restaurant! When we walked in, I had a déja vu moment. I recognized the blue awnings, the wall mounted Mahi Mahi & Yellowfin Tuna and the fresh fish in the refrigerated case and realized that we had been here back in 2011 (pre-Yelp Elite), when we came to SD for Comic-Con! We queued up to order our food and the nice server managing the dining room directed us to a table out in the patio area. When your food is ready, the server homes in on your table number stand to deliver the goods. We started by sharing a hearty bowl of thick New England Clam Chowder and the taste brought me 2500 miles back to New England with chunks of clams & potatoes. The seared Black Pepper & Sesame Crusted Ahi Tuna was a great tasty appetizer, but could have been an entree because it came with a nice bowl of rice. We also had an assorted trio of seafood tacos, which were sizable enough for the wife & I to share, with a Beer Battered Cod and another with Fried Scallops. The third Scallop & Shrimp Track Taco was big enough to come on its own plate, all dressed up in crema, slaw, onions & avocado. I was jealous of the table next to us because they had 2 gigantic bowls of mussels and the couple were unabashedly slurping up the juicy mollusks with wine & tomato sauce from the shells. I'm drooling just thinking about it, so I gotta make my way back to San Diego really soon!
We came here for a late lunch, and we had already Know what we wanted. I like ceviche with shrimp is so fresh. I like shrimp and crab ceviche next time I will have crab & shrimp combo ceviche What a good afternoon with fresh fish and the market to Pick up your fresh fish next to go. I really enjoyed my fish Taco so large And the Ceviche had such great flavor town! You want more. Tuna Melt is good but she liked the ceviche was better she said. This is one of son's favorite restaurants. We didn't have time to go when he visited last time. We stopped in for lunch Friday. She was disappointed that the soft shell crab sandwich was not on the menu. I reminded him that is a seasonal item. He settled for the Buffalo Calamari sandwich. There was too much Buffalo and Blue Cheese for his liking. The roll was perfectly toasty on the outside and soft on the inside. The calamari was cooked well, with a light crispy crust. It could have used a small side salad. I ordered the Ahi Poke with rice. You have the option to add avocado for and additional charge. It was very fresh and well marinated. I should have ordered it with wonton chips. Both meals were generous portions, I took my left overs home he didn't. Service could have been better. My meal was dropped off first. So we had to wait a bit longer for his to eat together. There was water sitting under the utensil holder so the server wiped that up with a napkin. We sat on the back patio to get some air. No one checked on us after food was dropped off. We had to go inside to get a ToGo container. While I appreciate that it's a seafood market + restaurant, I think service and quality used to be better overall. read more

Bluewater has multiple locations in San Diego. We ordered takeout from the airport location two days in a row. The restaurant seems very popular as there's a line every time we are they on weekdays. Takeout only takes 20-30 minutes. We tried a bunch of items and I must say my favorite is their seafood combo salad which come with crab, smoked salmon and shrimp. The seafood taste so fresh and the portion is big. Their sandwiches were good too and very light. Would definitely come back again next time in San Diego. read more
Had a seafood craving so me and my girlfriend decided to give this place a try. Came around lunch time and it was very busy. Line was out the door but it went by pretty fast. You order at the counter and they provide a table for you to sit at. Indoor seating is limited but they have more tables outside. Place was clean despite the crowd of people inside and the staff were very patient and friendly. For food we ordered oysters, clam chowder, tacos, and a shrimp/crab cocktail. Paired everything with a nice barrio lager beer. Oysters were fresh and delicious. Definitely recommend getting a few to start of your meal. The clam chowder was a little on the salty side but not overwhelming. I would still order it again. The shrimp and crab cocktail was my favorite thing we ordered. The shrimp were big and the crab meat was sweet. Fish tacos were decent but nothing crazy. A bit dry so I probably wouldn't order it again. Overall I believe this place is worth coming back. I've been coming to Blue Water for over a decade and they never disappoint. The food is flavorful and the seafood is incredibly fresh. When you enter the restaurant, walk up, grab a menu, and check everything out while you wait in line. This way you know what you want when it's time to order. This place gets busy but they operate efficiently so help them help you by being ready! Blue Water is a great place to stop for fresh, local seafood. They have you covered if you're hungry right now or you're having people over for taco Tuesday. They also have a super clean restaurant. I didn't even know about this restaurant/market - Blue Water - and was brought here by my friends who reside in this metro area. Since I tend to always ask for Italian or Greek food, I felt it was only right for me to acquiesce to what they wanted to eat that night. Blue Water sits about halfway between Old Town and Little Italy on the side of I-5 opposite from the international airport. There are other restaurants clustered in these few blocks that are also popular. If you are willing to walk a few blocks, you can take the trolley here. One orders at the counter and the food is then brought out to you via a placard with a number you put on your table. The service at Blue Water was unremarkable, but, since there was a constant line, you can't expect them to fawn over you. The prices vary, but, for the more "exclusive" slabs of fish, they run a little on the higher side. The interior has woodsy and somewhat seaside nautical decor. It might also take a little bit of work to find a table owing to its popularity. I will eat seafood, and like some types of seafood very much, but I'd say I don't care for more than half of the seafood out there. Here, they feature many types of seafood, all of which are fresh and you can peruse all the glass cases displaying it. Coming from the kitchen, there are some themed and nuanced presentations of it. I didn't need an entire fish market. I just order pieces of fish that can be presented like a piece of steak and, hopefully, with as little cartilage as possible. Similarly, I also like some smaller fish made to look that way, such as trout. I'm not a big fan of shellfish and don't eat clams, mussels, calamari, and others, but do like shrimp and scallops. They seem to put together some nice platters with scallops. I will also eat lobster, but have probably done so less than what one can count on two hands. If someone wants to treat me to the latter, I'm in. The three platters delivered to the table were enjoyed with my friends hosting me here enjoying the food more than I did. To keep things simple, I ordered a trio of fish tacos. They were fairly good. My friends liked their dishes more than I did. I typically wonder if I'm going astray when I'm not giving a business a rating that's in line with the herd. Three stars does indeed mean that a place is fine and Blue Water is fine. I might be doing this because of the service, the pricing of some items such that you wouldn't want to add much on, and the overall appeal of my selected dish. However, since there are many other four and five star reviews, and if you really like fish, Blue Water will most likely be reliable for you. read more

This place was delicious after a full hot day at San Diego Zoo. We came so hungry and this place was still open. We wanted something quick before our long drive home. The fish was fresh. The calamari was delicious. We ordered the shrimp tacos and they were filling and flavorful. The salmon plate was juicy and not dry but we had to take half of it home since we ordered too much. At the end of the day, they were out of some types of fish. Service was great and helped with recommendations on what to get. The menu can be a little overwhelming for first timers like us. read more

Stopped by with my wife and sister-in-law for a quick bite and some beers, and it turned out to be a solid choice. The seafood was fresh and well prepared. As someone who's picky about oysters, I was happy to find that they were fresh and tasted great. The fried calamari was crispy and not greasy, and the grilled shrimp was flavorful and nicely cooked. This place is always a 5/5. Always come expecting a line, but always come expecting it to be worth the wait. The fish is so fresh. It's always a challenge choosing what to get, so going with a group who likes to share is a plus. I've been here a number of times, but this was my first time trying mussels and clams here. They were delicious and the broth they came in was divine - I couldn't drank it! I always opt for the plates so I can really enjoy the fish separate from other toppings and sauces. Tacos are huge and loaded! Two was more than enough for me. The standouts for me were the grilled scallop, grilled octopus, and the beer battered scallop or cod. We also got sides of calamari and onion rings, both which were good. Parking can be hard around here during dining hours. read more
The food was good. The poke was very fresh and the tacos were large enough that 2 were filling. The only issue was the wait staff kept moving us after telling is where to sit. I would classify it as "kindly being very bossy " probably would not return but worth a try once read more

Thank you to the staff for being so friendly! We accidentally ordered way too much food: 5 codfish tacos, mussels and clams, a dozen oysters, the New England clam chowder bowl, medium shrimp cocktail, calamari, garlic bread, and 3 pacificos - came out to about $150 in total. Pretty much everything came out fantastic. The slaw on the tacos was delish, oysters and cocktail were fresh, and the chowder was nice and hearty. The only thing that could've been different was the mussels and clams, as the broth was a little lacking in flavor, but was fixed with a little more lemon juice and some soy sauce. Everything came out really quickly - under 15 minutes - which we weren't complaining about at all. The menu is great - lots a variety, and overall a nice place to hang out with friends! read more

My mom and I really loved the food here. We had the dozen oysters to start! They were fresh and slightly sweet The track taco was super yummy. This is their award winning taco! I enjoyed the big, juicy pieces of shrimp and the mango slaw on top. Would definitely get this one again! We also shared the fish and chips - beer battered cod. I liked how the breading wasn't thick and it remained crispy!! Also, it didn't feel heavy or too oily at all. The fish inside was moist. The coleslaw that came with it was good too and it was a little sweet. I didn't like the tartar sauce that much and honestly didn't feel like the fish needed it because it already had good flavor. Our family goes here on occasion when we want seafood because they have quite the selection. The portions are enormous! Real bang for your buck in my opinion. I would go early since there's usually a line out the door and parking might be a hassle. The service was quick. They have a display case where if you wanted to, you could buy your seafood by the pound and cook it at home. There's a few seating areas but not much since it's a small place. It could get loud since the freeway is right there. Definitely a must try read more
Blue Water is a seafood restaurant and market that's been here for over 20 years. It's located on India St and less than a block away from El Indio the mexican restaurant. Only limited street parking. Earlier this week, after picking up some tacos from El Indio for Fendi I decided to walked over and check out Blue Water. The dining room and outdoor patio were crowded with diners. I saw several dishes pass by mostly fish tacos and fish and chips, so on a whim, that's what I ordered; Fish and Chip which is the signature dish which is fresh as gets high turnover. The cashier was busy multitasking, delivering food to diners and chatting with the kitchen staff, meanwhile the line to order behind me grew longer. This older female cashier finally realized the long line of customers and took my order immediately, would have been nice if she was cordial... I paid and was given a numbered post and my food would be brought to me. I sat outside the umbrella shaded patio, on the wooden benches. The outdoor area was kept tidy and clean by the staff. Shortly thereafter my plate was presented and it looked appealing in all its fried glory. I grew to love fish and chips especially after visiting London a few times and having their version of fish and chips with mushy peas and malt vinegar which is how most British pubs serves it was really 'Bloody Good,' as the Brit's would say lol Here, no mushy peas, but there's malt vinegar on the table if that's your preference. My plate had three sizable fried cod, criss cross cut fries, a small cup of a dill tasting white sauce and cole slaw, which I would order a larger bowl of next time. The fish tasted as though it had been marinated in brine with vinegar so the addition of malt vinegar wasn't necessary unless you wanted more vinegar taste. Everything was scrumptious and more than I can eat, I ended up boxing it taking it togo. The staff servers of younger ladies were super nice and helpful. I chatted with one a little and told her it was my first time visit. I usually have fish and chips at Mitch's or Ketch in Point Loma with a view of the marina. Because this restaurant doesn't have a view of the marina or any body of water, I wasn't compelled to visit. But if I'm going to visit the other restaurants nearby I will come here now, knowing the food is good. I didn't get a chance to look at their seafood market display but I did see people ordering from there and had it grilled, all looked really good. Great restaurant with fresh seafood and plenty of options. Parking can be a little difficult given the area, but the service is fast and staff is friendly. I ordered the three mini shrimp tacos that were very well battered and seasoned. The margarita was also very flavorful and perfect for the warm summer. read more

The fish tacos here are fantastic! You order at the counter and then sit at a table of your choice. When we came at around 3pm there was still a huge line, which speaks to the popularity of this place. I got two tacos, one fried cod and one grilled snapper. For $20 for two tacos I had high expectations, and this spot definitely delivered. The tacos were MASSIVE - each one was basically the size of two normal tacos so I was definitely full after this. The cod was perfectly fried and the snapper was also well cooked, and they were topped with a bunch of cabbage and pico. My favorite part, and what tied it all together, was the sauce that came with it - it was tangy, fresh, and so so good! I would highly recommend this spot if you're looking for some fish tacos! They're not your typical street tacos, but definitely something more hearty and unique. read more
