I actually walked into Tacos El Villasana without realizing this was the place I had bookmarked to visit when I hit San Diego. It just seemed like a cool bar to check out. But I digress. The margaritas at the bar were hitting. I was already very happy when I made my way to the patio out back and picked up a menu only to realize where I was. Had to get the ribeye tacos and man were they good. So were the shrimp tacos. Lots of seating available and you get to watch the man throw down in the kitchen. Just a fitting food spot for a wonderful area.

THE SPACE: You walk into an open and spacious tap house with seating and large windows facing the street. There's also a small stage, so I'm assuming they have live music at times. Walk past the bar and through a corridor and you are welcomed by an open, airy outdoor space and the smell of the grill. Outside, there are tables surrounded by some greenery. It's counter service, so you place your order and they bring the food to the table. THE FOOD: We ordered the ribeye, shrimp and cabeza tacos. Oh my goodness, those ribeyes were worth every bite. They were topped with chimichurri and they were incredibly flavorful, well seasoned, and perfectly cooked. I am seriously still thinking about them! The shrimp taco was equally as good. The shrimp were cooked to perfection, not too chewy, and topped with a generous amount of guacamole. The cabeza tacos were also on point, packed with flavor and perfectly tender. All tacos were generously portioned. THE DRINKS: The Jamaica water is made with passionfruit and was honestly refreshing. The mango pineapple agua was my fave. Not too sweet , just right. We also tried their House Blonde beer and it paired well with my tacos. This is definitely a place I'll be coming back to.

Walk along the Embarcadero & get a freeze on a hot day, stop by Chilanga's (the best booth there) & get my huitlacoche on. Live music, shade, delicious vendors, right across from the water. I did have a little detour from Chilanga's - while I was waiting for my spouse to park, I sat at a shady table with a woman who was telling me about the poke truck (Island Mike's) & explaining that her coworker ran it as a side hustle, and that the poke was delicious because he had lived in Hawaii. I agonized a bit - get my Chilanga's huitlacoche huarache - or try the poke? I eventually decided: it's Mother's Day, you can have ALL the things, just like at a buffet! So I went to Island Mike's first. They advertised Broke Da Mouth poke - and I was a little suspicious at first - cuz Island Mike's didn't look like a Hawaii native but a mainlander who spent some time there. BUT... I got my poke "island style" (furikake, sushi rice, and the poke - not lots of distractions like seaweed salad or ginger like in the "mainland style") - and it really was off the hook. Really fresh & delicious and perfectly made. YUM & YUM. $12 for one scoop (the smaller size) & very worth it. Of course I still needed my Chilanga's so then I got the huitlacoche huarache (a vegetarian taste of heaven - shredded lettuce, huitlacoche, Mexican cheese on a huarache (masa dough) & tried the mango passion fruit agua fresca. The huarache is huge and I'd already had the little poke, so I took most of it home to eat later. But it was just as yummy as I remembered. And the agua fresca is amazing. I'll still crave Chilanga's but now I'll crave Island Mike's too. I need to get down here more often because it is a super fun outing that is too good to waste on tourists!

I first ordered the ube bar which passed the test so I went back to order the mochi. They also offer lumpia, spam musubi and chicken wing combo plates and pork dumplings.

And that's what these tamales taste like to me. The masa is more flavorful than a typical tamale in my experience, and all the ingredients are fresh, just wonderful food. You will usually want to get there early to have a good choice of what you get and they don't always come out right away, so you might find yourself waiting. That's o.k. Patience is a virtue in this life and you might find yourself getting some of the best home made style tamales if you have some. :-) Also, this is a food stand, I don't believe they have any place to eat here so ambiance isn't a thing, the parking can be a little tough but not usually a big deal.

So, I can't express how much it meant to me to see a plant based option on this menu when I passed by at the OB Farmers market. AND it was cheaper than the regular options!! Only $5! I thought maybe it was a mistake or outdated but when they rang me up, it really was only $5- for something just as loaded as the regular version. I'm used to seeing vegan options being the more expensive option, so this was really appreciated. The veggie dogs were great. If I could get this again, I'd probably skip the chorizo or ask for half as much because it was pretty salty. They definitely leave some seeds in the jalapeños so skip that if you can't handle heat. It comes sauces that are mayo based (except for the mustard and ketchup), so leaving those off will yield you a vegan friendly dog. Thank you Gus Doggos.
