Meat pie and Scotch egg delivery!
    Tony L.

LOVE these meat pies and scotch eggs! I get them every year during the Escondido Renaissance Faire at Oscar's food booth, and they are the perfect on-the-go food there while I'm running around as a pirate. During this COVID-19 ordeal, the Esco Ren Faire was cancelled, so I was sad I couldn't get my meat pie / scotch egg fix, but then a friend told me Oscar was doing frozen delivery! My mind was blown, and my stomach was grumbling, so I messaged and put in an order right away. Got them, and this past week my taste buds have been in heaven! They cook perfectly in my convection toaster oven, perfectly crisp and flaky. I'm burning through my stash pretty quick though, so I'm gonna have to put in another order soon. You should try them if you haven't! You won't regret it!

Oscar's Meat Pie Shack was parked right outside Saint Archer and was the perfect treat to have with some beers after an adrenaline laced afternoon of paintballing next door. There were several savory pies on the menu and I wanted to try them all. I hoped that they had sausage rolls or something else to try in addition too, but it was all pies all day. I had the steak, bacon, and cheese, and they had some other really good ones, like steak & jalapeño, steak & kidney, and lamb & rosemary. My super snack had a nice, flaky pie crust and piping hot cheesy, meaty filling. I didn't get much bacon as expected, but still delicious overall. The guy working the food stand was really friendly and helpful. They accept debit/credit cards, so that's a plus. I'm surprised that there wasn't already a review posted, but Oscar's Meat Pie Shack deserves a mention. This mobile shack is worth checking out if it rolls nearby you.

Today I ordered the rosemary lamb meat pie, the sausage roll, and the turkey leg for my family at the Escondido Renaissance faire.

Walk along the Embarcadero & get a freeze on a hot day, stop by Chilanga's (the best booth there) & get my huitlacoche on. Live music, shade, delicious vendors, right across from the water. I did have a little detour from Chilanga's - while I was waiting for my spouse to park, I sat at a shady table with a woman who was telling me about the poke truck (Island Mike's) & explaining that her coworker ran it as a side hustle, and that the poke was delicious because he had lived in Hawaii. I agonized a bit - get my Chilanga's huitlacoche huarache - or try the poke? I eventually decided: it's Mother's Day, you can have ALL the things, just like at a buffet! So I went to Island Mike's first. They advertised Broke Da Mouth poke - and I was a little suspicious at first - cuz Island Mike's didn't look like a Hawaii native but a mainlander who spent some time there. BUT... I got my poke "island style" (furikake, sushi rice, and the poke - not lots of distractions like seaweed salad or ginger like in the "mainland style") - and it really was off the hook. Really fresh & delicious and perfectly made. YUM & YUM. $12 for one scoop (the smaller size) & very worth it. Of course I still needed my Chilanga's so then I got the huitlacoche huarache (a vegetarian taste of heaven - shredded lettuce, huitlacoche, Mexican cheese on a huarache (masa dough) & tried the mango passion fruit agua fresca. The huarache is huge and I'd already had the little poke, so I took most of it home to eat later. But it was just as yummy as I remembered. And the agua fresca is amazing. I'll still crave Chilanga's but now I'll crave Island Mike's too. I need to get down here more often because it is a super fun outing that is too good to waste on tourists!

There was live music and aa few food stalls. Good Eatz (filipino/hawaiian fusion) caught my eye mainly because they have a few Ube pastries (mochi, ube bar, etc). I first ordered the ube bar which passed the test so I went back to order the mochi. They also offer lumpia, spam musubi and chicken wing combo plates and pork dumplings.

Got my food in about 10 minutes which is good because I was hungry. The chips and guacamole were really good. We really enjoyed them. I got a carne asada taco and a shrimp taco. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the shrimp taco more than the carne asada one and I'm usually a carne asada girl. I think it's because the habanero salsa wasn't as hot as I usually like it but it was good. I also got the avocado salsa which was good. We sat outside on the benches and watched people as they walked by on a Saturday night which was pretty entertaining. All in all, a nice spot and glad I stopped by.

No wait at the counter either, which was a nice surprise given the crowd. We ordered a few things: *Carne Asada Tacos: honestly, these were a bit dry. The salsa bar helped a lot and added some much-needed flavor, but on their own they didn't really stand out. *Carne Asada Quesadilla: this was actually pretty good. Definitely heavy on the cheese, but once you dipped it in the salsa, it came together nicely. They also have a solid craft beer selection, although a few options were out when we went, and no IPAs available. I ended up going with a pale ale, which was decent. Overall, the service was great and the space is clean and well-kept, especially for being right in the heart of downtown. Food-wise, it's just kind of mid. Not bad, but not something I'd go out of my way for.

I had never given this vendor much thought until a few months ago when it was recommended to me. I can say Crepes Jourdan is the main reason I visit this farmers market on Saturdays. Their breakfast crepes are out of this world. You can site them under this little tent named Crepes 4 Lovers. They are located by a succulent vendor (a really cool stand and owner as well). It is a family run business. The dad makes the crepes while his daughter takes the order. This visit his young adorable son was taking orders and working register. Each crepe is made to order. Only one can be made at at time. He had two crepe burners. The ingredients would be on one burner while he would make a fresh crepe on the other. Our order took over 30 minutes as there were quite a few customers that Saturday. It was well worth the wait for freshly made crepes. We tried: THE CLASSIC $10: - sausage, bacon, one egg, cheddar cheese. It's served with a side of their sriracha house aioli and topped with fresh spinach. This was one of the best breakfast crepes I've had. The house aioli brought this savory crepe together. It was so creamy. I didn't find it spicy at all. If anything, I thought I could taste garlic in the aioli. The crepe was light and hide a nice chew to it. You could taste every component of this crepe. The one egg wasn't scrambled too long and the sausage + bacon were wonderfully present. THE WORKS $12: - sausage, chicken, bacon, tomato, mushroom, cheddar cheese. I was privately jealous as this crepe seemed more substantial. It was a heavier crepe with all the meats and tasted delicious. But we all agreed The Classic was the better choice for a morning breakfast crepe. We weren't a fan of the chicken in the crepe that day. my blog as more detailed review and pics I've tried the Classic a few times now. They definitely have consistency down here at Crepe Jourdan LLC. We have yet to have a bad version of any crepes here. They don't advertise and don't have social media. I absolutely recommend Crepes Jourdan when you visit the Little Italy Farmers Market on Saturdays.

At least this year they were able to rent out part of the SDCCU Stadium lot, so there's a ton of parking and no need for a shuttle to get there. There were a good amount of vendors, but the food was really just mediocre. You also really have to do your research on all the vendors before you go, because the one we decided to get was awful. The one we went to had these BBQ Squid Skewers which we ordered, and they were very undercooked. They were pretty much still raw. We took it back to them and they just cooked it a little bit more and the second time around the body of the squid was cooked better, but the tentacles were still very raw. Some of the vendors also didn't really plan accordingly because by 8 pm, before peak time, some of them were already sold out of items. Most of the main course type foods were just average, overpriced food. I think the better items to get here are the drinks and the desserts, so I would recommend getting something to eat before you arrive, and then wait in line for the drinks and desserts. There was absolutely no seating at all, so a lot of people, us included, just ended up sitting on the ground to eat our food. There were maybe like 5 tables that I saw in the entire venue which were obviously occupied very very quickly. There was a ton of open space, even with the amount of people walking around and the long lines, so there should definitely be a lot more tables than there actually were. I hope that next year they really rent out way more tables and chairs because this year it was just not enough. Like I said, I arrived around 5:30 pm, and I was glad that I did, because by 8 pm, some of the vendors would run out of certain items, and the lines were just so ridiculously long, which led to a ridiculously long wait, for ridiculously mediocre food. When we left around 9:45, the line to just get inside was so long that it reached the concrete border at the lot and had to make a bend in order to not go past it. If you're planning on coming here, I highly recommend going closer to the opening time because there is no way that I'd pay $5 to wait hours in line for sold out food. I went in early, so the wait times weren't so bad for me, which is probably why my experience wasn't as bad as others. It was still pretty bad though.

I find it humorous reading the one-star reviews from earlier tonight because the 2019 version of…read morethe SD Night Market was an improvement over the past years, especially the cluster that was on Convoy St in 2018. That being said, many of the critiques were spot-on and accurate. Here were my observations for the first night of the event... Pros: * There were many more parking spaces than in the Kearny Mesa area. A shuttle was no longer needed to transport people to the site. * Food vendors were more numerous this time (~32 compared to less than 10). * There was plenty of open space away from the food lines to walk around and not feel overcrowded. Cons: * The wait to get into the stadium parking lot was ridiculously long. The organizers needed to hire SD Police to direct traffic and override the signals which were useless. * There was a competing auto festival on the other side of the stadium lot so that added to the congestion on Friars Rd. * The admission lines should have been more efficiently managed especially for those who had already purchased a ticket on Eventbrite. * Some vendors really underestimated the customer demand and ran out of food early. * The food lines did take a long time as many of the booths seemed caught off guard by the crowds. Overall, I gave my experience 2.5 stars and rounded up because trust me, the SD Night Market has been even more poorly organized than what we have seen so far. PS: I heard the Fire Marshal had to shut down admission around 10 pm because the capacity of 5,000 attendees had been reached.
